Clerics are my favourite class, I drift away to other classes, but always return. However, I think that to enjoy playing a cleric (especially at low levels), you need two things:
one: party balance. In a current campaign, being a lone cleric in a party of 7 with four fighter types was a bit wearing...you do nothing but heal. Now that one fighter has died and the player decided to go with a war cleric it is good again, the cleric has flexability (and can afford to lose spell levels to go into some of those prestige classes).
two: Another Role. Be it a fighter or a sage, smething you can do that doesn't use up those all important (to the rest of the party) spells. I have seen players turned off clerics forever because they were just treated as healers by the rest of the party and had no other role.

Oh my goodness, the DM has let himself in for a world of hurt. And you wish to play monks, perfect. Look up Vow of Poverty in Book of Exalted Deeds....gross, gross, gross for monks. You're are not allowed to own any magic, but the bonuses include AC, + to attributes, DR, you weapons become magical, amoungst other things.
Ok now for a tyro question...how do you get quotes from other people to show up in the little blue boxes.

Another Aussie here. Live in Sydney, but grew up in Tamworth, yep, the country music capital....I blame my parents.
I play a bit, ok, quite a bit, of D&D, and a smattering of other games. Currently having a hiatus from DMing, I have a 2 and 4 year olds and they take all the energy I have after the working week.
Do most of my shopping at Tinnies in the city, though occasionally Penrith, unless Mil Sims has a good special on something. I am very lucky that my husband also plays and paints, so is very supportive of me and my hobbies. I read on these boards all the time having to justify something, like buying Pathfinder, to the significant other and don't know how I would cope.
I must admit that I very rarely buy the books at full price...they are just so expensive. I normally wait, not so patiently, til one of the stores has them on special....like Tinnies having 25% off two weekends ago.
I must admit, I was feeling a bit awed by you guys....all the published works etc...I don't know how you do it.
I do have one other suggestion though it is about class not race. We have a Psi-warrior in another campaign. They can be quite interesting to play and can get really gross at the higher levels when you get access to some of the higher level powers. I do agree that is is hard to go past a human for fighter.
I have one question though, you say you are being pressured by the other players...what about the DM, any pressure there? There may be a case for going an ECL just to make the DM's life easier. If everyone is around the same ECL, then it can be easier on the DM.
The feat you were trying to think of is Mage Slayer (Complete Arcane)
Thanks for the welcome. I am actually home sick from work *cough, cough*. Being in Australia means that normally when you guys are all active on the boards I am beavering away at work and by the time I am all ready to go you are all snuggled up in bed....time differences, oh what fun.
And it helps that Catfolk are cool......I am currently going through the same thing (though our DM is only allowing ECL1), and have been trolling though books looking for stuff. The other race you could look at is the Sharakim (races of destiny) From a roleplaying point of veiw they are basically orcish looking, but like the civilised things in life, ECL1 with +4 str, -2 dex, +2 int and -2 cha. Though I cannot find a figure of an ultra-civilised orc. Catfolk are fairly easy to find figures for.
Hi there (my first ever post) Having played character of both types in mixed parties, I find that the LA characters get some cool bonuses at the lower levels, but really start to hurt at higher levels when the cool stuff doesn't impact the game as much, after all what help is having +2 to strength when the rest of the party has access to magic items that do the same thing. But to answer your inital question, if you wish to look at a fighter class with LA +1 try the draconic template (from Races of the Dragon) which gives you +2 str, con and Cha. Or for something a bit different a swashbuckler catfolk (from Races of the Wild) which gives you +4 Dex and +2 cha.
