I haven't played one myself, but I'd look into the Magus class for this. Its a hybrid fighter/arcane that is focused on self perfection of the mind and body from what I can tell. I'd probably also look into the Deadly Dealer feat eventually, as I kind of remember attacking with cards being one of Hisoka's things http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/deadly-dealer). If you go that route, I imagine Int and Dex being your primary and secondary attributes, not sure what the best tertiary would be though for your other 17.
Here's what I'm throwing around right now, I've never played an arcane character before so I figured this was the time to try new things. I'll hopefully get up a bit of background tomorrow. Human Wizard:

Re: Girvin Teech GM: I'd like to think he's fairly familiar with the lore surrounding Ustalav, but he's not comfortable with it. His reasons for coming to Ustalav in the first place are split between his Gnomish sense of adventure and his Druidic sense of duty. In his eyes, the problems in the country are traced back to some problem with, or corruption of, nature. Dealing with the "symptoms" of this disease is part of his duty to help Nature heal itself.
So, after mulling over the choice between a bard and a monk for long enough, I settled on the natural answer of a Druid. It's funny how character concepts happen like that sometimes... I'm still fiddling with gear and spells, but the build is pretty solid. Girvin Teech:

I've never done a background this way before, but somehow it felt right. *shrug* Fluff: Diary Entry 1 At the behest of Professor Lorrimor, I am beginning a record of my travels to Ustalav and my experiences therewithin for his future studies. I was born and raised... somewhere boring. People were happy, nature was happy, and nothing actually ever happened. In this terrific environment, I made the quite obvious choice of turning to the turmoil of Nature to provide interest in my life and fortunately enough for me it received me with open arms. I endevoured to learn from it and protect it's sanctity, and in return it gave me strength and companionship in order to redouble my efforts. It wasn't long though until I heard of a place full of adventure, unbefore seen creatures, and a nature scarred by the past. At the very thought of leaving this place, Ustalav, unseen I could practically feel myself grow paler so I joined the next merchant caravan and started my journey. ...My hand cramps already at the unfamiliarity of this infernal quill. I will write more soon. Diary Entry 2
Diary Entry 5
Diary Entry 16
Prehaps not though. Perhaps Lorrimor's plans for me at Ravengro will be so exquisite that I must share them, even if it is with a lifeless book.
A bit of a biased source, but better thought out than I'd be... porpentine wrote:

If there were cake lands, I wonder if Druids could wildshape into pastries... er - more on topic though, do we know roughly how long ago the war of 3 took place? I realized I didn't really have a time frame for it when fiddling with a backstory. Although, I guess if Groden is a vet we can assume it was fairly recent.
I'm still kind of rough, but here's where I am right now. I don't really have my combat stats worked out yet because I haven't gone through equipment. Still, I think it'll give enough basic feeling for a yea/neigh on the concept. I figured I'd post the first draft this way before creating a permanent alias for it. Let me know if any revisions would be nice, or if I'm going in the wrong direction, and I'll keep checking back here as I finish things up today/tonight. Basic Info:

I was going to ask this same question in a new topic, but I figured some thread necromancy may be easier. (Please note, I tried to research this for a quite a while before posting but due to the necessity of the word "Guide" in the search, results were easily muddled. My apologies if this was answered elsewhere). Is there a solution for this yet? The way I see it, there are a few options, and none of them seem quite right. Either: A) Guide's don't get a capstone/get a capstone that they can't use.
Trying to calm down and start making progress here, Averin took a deep breath before lashing out again at the lobster-being closest to him. Out of the corner of his eye he could tell that a few more people were thankfully starting to stir on the beach and breathed a quick sigh of relief. At least the group could start putting up a bit more of a fight now. attack: Attack Roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Damage 1d3 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Sorry all, I'm still here. The last couple days have been odd for me and I haven't had as much time to post as I normally do - shouldn't be an issue in the future.
Hi all, I'm pretty new to pathfinder (limited experience in a home game/setting) and am about to start a new pbp game (Serpent's Skull, if it matters). I've gone on and rolled up a fairly standard looking switch hitting half-elf ranger for level 1 with the hopes of taking him down the 2-handed combat style path instead of archery (which seems to be the norm for switch hitters). That brings me to a couple questions: 1) Is the 2-handed combat style even viable? Are there any trap feats in it that I should be avoiding? Any particularly recommended paths? 2) Are there any particular feats I should be grabbing at level up to help support a more melee focused character? Toughness (kind of a given), Heavy Armor, etc? 3) I really like the feel/fluff of a Horizon Walker, so I picked up the Guide archetype, with plans of moving into Horizon Walker if the game goes long enough. I'm thinking that this should work nicely with Terrain Bond and all the extra favored terrains in HW. Am I missing anything here? or is this not as viable as it looks? 4) Not really related to this character so much (I don't think), but I encountered the question while trying to research him. How does the ranger capstone ability work with Guides? The guide archetype doesn't replace the level 20 bonus but does replace the favored enemy ability that is required to use the capstone. Does it just work with Ranger's Focus instead? I'm not aiming for a perfectly min/maxed or optimized ranger here, but if I'm about to start a useless character I'd rather know and start adjusting at lvl 1, than later down the road. I'd be very grateful for any pointings out of terrible mistakes I'm making, or just suggestions of how to get the most out of a sub-optimal build. TL;DR - can a Guide/Horizon Walker work with a two handed weapon combat style?
As far as societal examples of dual shielding go, I found this quote:

My guess is that's either for show, or as a back up but the source doesn't really specify. I could see a rich tribesman in game training himself to use two shields as a show of status or wealth though.
Alright, here's where I am. As I said above, my preference is for the ranger but I'm throwing together bits of a wizard too just in case the party needs magic badly enough. Name: Averin Grey

Alright, so Gunslinger, Cav, Oracle, Rogue?, Magus? and me it seems. I was thinking about either a ranger or fighter but it seems we're distinctly magic light. I'll go on and put together my Ranger (preferred), and something arcane-y to use instead if our party balance seems off. As far as pbp goes, my only question would be: do we have any particular posting rate (2/week, 1/day, etc) or are we just going to aim for as often as possible and hope no one falls behind? Ariobius: For what it's worth, Undead is listed as one of the suggested Ranger favored enemies in the player's guide for this adventure. I can't say how frequent they are, but it seems like they'll at least be around.
Hi all, I'm relatively new to PF as well and have been thinking about trying to get into a pbp game recently. It seems like this game is already sitting at 5 players, so I understand if you don't have room or time for another. Just thought I'd throw my hat in and see what happens. If you want me to throw together a concept quickly, that's not a problem. (For what it's worth, my pf experience is limited to another pbp game on a different site that is low magic, low fantasy, and in a homebrew world. After a 18 months of playing the highest level character is 4, and I've yet to see so much as a +1 weapon drop. So I think I'm relatively familiar with core rules, but I have.. shall I say limited actual play experience.) |
