There's also an old 3.5 prestige class called Shiba Protector that seems to add wisdom to damage and attack for a one level dip, if you can get the prereqs.

http://dndtools.pw/classes/shiba-protector/

I'd be really interested in playing RotRL this way as well. I'm not totally new to PF, but it's been a couple years since I've played actively and never got past level 3-4 even then. I feel like this would be a good way for me to get back into things, and I'm willing to commit for a long-haul

I haven't played one myself, but I'd look into the Magus class for this. Its a hybrid fighter/arcane that is focused on self perfection of the mind and body from what I can tell. I'd probably also look into the Deadly Dealer feat eventually, as I kind of remember attacking with cards being one of Hisoka's things http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/deadly-dealer). If you go that route, I imagine Int and Dex being your primary and secondary attributes, not sure what the best tertiary would be though for your other 17.

Here's what I'm throwing around right now, I've never played an arcane character before so I figured this was the time to try new things. I'll hopefully get up a bit of background tomorrow.

I still consider myself a newbie, and like I said I've never played an arcane caster before, so if anything seems off/missing feel free to let me know

I think there may be a bit of confusion here, just to be clear: the people asking about PFS legal just want to know if they can use any Paizo source for character creation, right?

I'd be interested

I'm still pretty new (never gotten past level 3), and am looking for a game. Don't know much about that particular AP/module/thing, but I'm willing to give it a whirl.

...Knowing your class(es) might let people help you more efficiently.

Re: Girvin Teech

GM:

I'd like to think he's fairly familiar with the lore surrounding Ustalav, but he's not comfortable with it. His reasons for coming to Ustalav in the first place are split between his Gnomish sense of adventure and his Druidic sense of duty. In his eyes, the problems in the country are traced back to some problem with, or corruption of, nature. Dealing with the "symptoms" of this disease is part of his duty to help Nature heal itself.

So, after mulling over the choice between a bard and a monk for long enough, I settled on the natural answer of a Druid. It's funny how character concepts happen like that sometimes... I'm still fiddling with gear and spells, but the build is pretty solid.

I've never done a background this way before, but somehow it felt right. *shrug*

Fluff:

Diary Entry 1
At the behest of Professor Lorrimor, I am beginning a record of my travels to Ustalav and my experiences therewithin for his future studies. I was born and raised... somewhere boring. People were happy, nature was happy, and nothing actually ever happened. In this terrific environment, I made the quite obvious choice of turning to the turmoil of Nature to provide interest in my life and fortunately enough for me it received me with open arms. I endevoured to learn from it and protect it's sanctity, and in return it gave me strength and companionship in order to redouble my efforts. It wasn't long though until I heard of a place full of adventure, unbefore seen creatures, and a nature scarred by the past. At the very thought of leaving this place, Ustalav, unseen I could practically feel myself grow paler so I joined the next merchant caravan and started my journey.

...My hand cramps already at the unfamiliarity of this infernal quill. I will write more soon.

Diary Entry 2
It has been nearly a week since I've written, but I'm sure the people of the Metzenbaum hamlet will find the gap excusable now that they are free of Potato Blight. Anyways, the merchant caravan was oddly distant for most of the trip but I thought nothing of it as I was accustomed to Vincent having that effect on others. However, you can imagine my surprise when upon the eve of our arrival to Ustalav I found myself and Vincent caged and housed with the caravan's goods. At first I thought this the manifestation of some ill will by our companions, but was relieved to discover it was only the means of facilitating our entrance into an Ustalavic Circus - the members of which were intriguing enough on their own to justify my travel to this foreign place.

Diary Entry 5
After growing tired of the all too common sight of city interiors and gawking peasants I convinced some of the Circus' animals to cause a distraction while Vincent and I made our escape. I had already heard stories about Professor Lorrimor and I was eager to seek him out and learn what I could of the plight of these lands. The extent of his bookish knowledge, despite his apparent utter lack of hands on experience in Nature was intriguing. I was also happy to discover that my extensive practical knowledge of this and that to be of interest to the esteemed professor. Our periodic discussions quickly became a highlight of my time in Ustalav.

Diary Entry 16
It seems these entries are finally beginning to catch up to me in the present. I recently received a summons from Lorrimor which, naturally, caused a spark of joy. Perhaps he had discovered something extraordinary that he wished to discuss and share with me. However, this spark was quickly extinguished when I finished the summons and found the reason behind it. Lorrimor is dead? I will honor his final wishes, and go to this Ravengro. However, I believe this to now be the final entry in this book.

Prehaps not though. Perhaps Lorrimor's plans for me at Ravengro will be so exquisite that I must share them, even if it is with a lifeless book.

Dotting for interest. Looking at a monk or bard, but still to busy juggling concepts to decide.

A bit of a biased source, but better thought out than I'd be...

porpentine wrote:

What about sohei archer monks? At the time of writing, a sohei archer can take Rapid Shot and Manyshot and use them on a bow flurry. He also gets a slowtrack Weapon Training progression. With gloves of duelling the training nets him +5 bow attack and damage at 18th level.

Punchy perks, pal, but at what price? The sohei gets six monastic bonus feats, of which five can be invested in mounted combat...not a field that lends itself terribly well to bowmanship. Meanwhile, the zen archer gets ten bonus feats, of which nine can and should be invested in archery. None of the zen’s archery bonus feats require prerequisites. Some are fighter-only, some are available before a fighter would get them, and one (Perfect Strike archery) is only available to the enlightened. An embarrassment of riches in the feat department is one of the zen archer’s great strengths. The sohei archer lacks this pleasant embarrassment. He still has his ten normal feat slots, of course (11 if human), but archery is feat intensive, and the zen archer gets free rein with his own open slots elsewhere - for example, he can put a few more in archery and a good number in defense, which is what makes him such a bastion.

+5 attack and damage at 18th level just about makes up for this disparity - but bonus bow feats aren’t all a zen archer gets. He has four archery-related ki powers the sohei never receives (expanded range, unarmed damage, total concealment, total cover). He gets Reflexive Shot (which is essentially another free feat, Snap Shot), Zen Archery, and eventually Ki Focus Bow, which allows stunning arrows and much else besides. The sohei archer is hot, but he’s not zen hot.

I was flying home today and ended up spending some time in airports without internet. I started playing with photoshop to pass the time and came up with this. It's not particularly great, but I thought I'd share it here.

If there were cake lands, I wonder if Druids could wildshape into pastries...

er - more on topic though, do we know roughly how long ago the war of 3 took place? I realized I didn't really have a time frame for it when fiddling with a backstory. Although, I guess if Groden is a vet we can assume it was fairly recent.

Yay for oracle being a divine caster without needing to know a divinity, I guess. I've got a pretty good handle on things I think - expecting to have my sheet/alias done when I get a bit of time tonight.

Buffy Marathon sounds like fun, enjoy it

I'm still kind of rough, but here's where I am right now. I don't really have my combat stats worked out yet because I haven't gone through equipment. Still, I think it'll give enough basic feeling for a yea/neigh on the concept. I figured I'd post the first draft this way before creating a permanent alias for it. Let me know if any revisions would be nice, or if I'm going in the wrong direction, and I'll keep checking back here as I finish things up today/tonight.

I'm interested as well, probably looking to play an Oracle, but I'm flexible. I have about a year and a half of experience playing pathfinder pbp - albeit low level - and a couple more years in other pbp stuff, for whatever that's worth.

Thanks guys. For some reason I have a bit of a thing for the Guide archetype and this has been pestering me for a while. I guess this could be as good of an excuse as any to multiclass though if the capstone is a gray area...

I was going to ask this same question in a new topic, but I figured some thread necromancy may be easier. (Please note, I tried to research this for a quite a while before posting but due to the necessity of the word "Guide" in the search, results were easily muddled. My apologies if this was answered elsewhere).

Is there a solution for this yet? The way I see it, there are a few options, and none of them seem quite right. Either:

A) Guide's don't get a capstone/get a capstone that they can't use.
B) Master Hunter works with Ranger's Focus, instead of FE
C) Ranger's Focus only replaces one level of FE, and Master hunter still works with the other 4
D) Something I'm too new to the rules to think of
E) GM Discretion

I leave you guys for a couple days and come back to ~60 posts, well done all. I think I'm caught up, and am leveling Averin now.

Gandal, don't worry - I more than earned it. I should have at least had the decency to pop in and let you guys know what was going on. Again, my apologies for the last week.

Well, I guess I get a chance to retry my rolls then. Yay for silver linings?

re-posting now...

Okay, I know I posted this round, but my post isn't visible to me over on the other thread. Is it just me, or did something happen to it? I can repost if needed...

Ack, for some reason I was thinking total defense was full round and fighting defensively was standard >_<

editing now...

EDIT: ...or not, seems my time to edit is expired.

Trying to calm down and start making progress here, Averin took a deep breath before lashing out again at the lobster-being closest to him. Out of the corner of his eye he could tell that a few more people were thankfully starting to stir on the beach and breathed a quick sigh of relief. At least the group could start putting up a bit more of a fight now.

Averin/mozartdminor, are you still here? I'll wait on discussing who's taking Gelik's "quest" and how we're splitting the gold until I know you're in the conversation.

Sorry all, I'm still here. The last couple days have been odd for me and I haven't had as much time to post as I normally do - shouldn't be an issue in the future.

Hey Run, Just Run

I'm not sure if we'll have a spot, or if it'll have to go to gfvelastegui for calling it first. It's not my choice though. If you want to keep playing with character creation without assurances we're on a 20 point buy.

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to pathfinder (limited experience in a home game/setting) and am about to start a new pbp game (Serpent's Skull, if it matters). I've gone on and rolled up a fairly standard looking switch hitting half-elf ranger for level 1 with the hopes of taking him down the 2-handed combat style path instead of archery (which seems to be the norm for switch hitters). That brings me to a couple questions:

1) Is the 2-handed combat style even viable? Are there any trap feats in it that I should be avoiding? Any particularly recommended paths?

2) Are there any particular feats I should be grabbing at level up to help support a more melee focused character? Toughness (kind of a given), Heavy Armor, etc?

3) I really like the feel/fluff of a Horizon Walker, so I picked up the Guide archetype, with plans of moving into Horizon Walker if the game goes long enough. I'm thinking that this should work nicely with Terrain Bond and all the extra favored terrains in HW. Am I missing anything here? or is this not as viable as it looks?

4) Not really related to this character so much (I don't think), but I encountered the question while trying to research him. How does the ranger capstone ability work with Guides? The guide archetype doesn't replace the level 20 bonus but does replace the favored enemy ability that is required to use the capstone. Does it just work with Ranger's Focus instead?

I'm not aiming for a perfectly min/maxed or optimized ranger here, but if I'm about to start a useless character I'd rather know and start adjusting at lvl 1, than later down the road. I'd be very grateful for any pointings out of terrible mistakes I'm making, or just suggestions of how to get the most out of a sub-optimal build.

TL;DR - can a Guide/Horizon Walker work with a two handed weapon combat style?

As far as societal examples of dual shielding go, I found this quote:

The Origin of the Inequality of the Social Classes wrote:

We are told that among the Gold Coast natives rich people have the privilege of using ivory blowing horns and of carrying two shields, a favour not allowed to anyone who has not qualified himself by giving feasts to his tribesmen.

Link

My guess is that's either for show, or as a back up but the source doesn't really specify. I could see a rich tribesman in game training himself to use two shields as a show of status or wealth though.

Sounds good, I'll finish him up and set up my Alias by the end of the day

Alright, so Gunslinger, Cav, Oracle, Rogue?, Magus? and me it seems. I was thinking about either a ranger or fighter but it seems we're distinctly magic light. I'll go on and put together my Ranger (preferred), and something arcane-y to use instead if our party balance seems off.

As far as pbp goes, my only question would be: do we have any particular posting rate (2/week, 1/day, etc) or are we just going to aim for as often as possible and hope no one falls behind?

Ariobius:
For what it's worth, Undead is listed as one of the suggested Ranger favored enemies in the player's guide for this adventure. I can't say how frequent they are, but it seems like they'll at least be around.

Hi all, I'm relatively new to PF as well and have been thinking about trying to get into a pbp game recently. It seems like this game is already sitting at 5 players, so I understand if you don't have room or time for another. Just thought I'd throw my hat in and see what happens. If you want me to throw together a concept quickly, that's not a problem.

(For what it's worth, my pf experience is limited to another pbp game on a different site that is low magic, low fantasy, and in a homebrew world. After a 18 months of playing the highest level character is 4, and I've yet to see so much as a +1 weapon drop. So I think I'm relatively familiar with core rules, but I have.. shall I say limited actual play experience.)
