Scarab Sages

Good morning!

I finally get to play in a campaign after GMing for eternity. We'll be playing Strange Aeons.

I've already got my character (Vivisectionist using the Aberrant and Aquatic mutagen discoveries from Gothic Campaign Compendium for body horror fun).

We also have an Exposed Vigilante (Warlock) using talents and feats from N Jolly's legendary vigilante and a Human Incanter (SoP) who's going to be focused on healing and buffs.Psychic

I think we have ranged damage covered (warlock), decent melee (natural attack alchemist), good support (incanter) and we're fairly good for skills in general.

My friend who's fairly new to the game has asked me to help him make a character. In the last game (and his first) he played a bloodrager and he says he found it boring to just hit things in combat, so steering away from melee. At the same time they're fairly new to the game so I don't want to many moving parts.

3rd party is available for use.
20 point buy
Core races, human preferred.
Thematic for a horror campaign

I was thinking that we don't have a full spell caster so maybe a psychic or a sorcerer but I just don't know.

Please, help me out

Hi there,

Is the sword dancer fighter archetype in Southlands supposed to have a way to use dexterity to hit?

It gains dex to damage with scimitars at 5th level but no way to gain dexterity to hit with a scimitar (weapon finesse doesn't work and taking dervish dance makes the 5th level ability redundant)

Paizo have said before that a gauntlet is an unarmed strike and so uses weapon focus:unarmed strike. Shield gauntlet style in armor master's handbook lists wf: gauntlet as a pre-requisite. Should this read wf: unarmed strike

Morning all,

Could I ask that the beginner's box that I got as part of my humble bundle be removed from my account and donated to a school/library/Care home/day centre.

If a Care home is near by thatd be amazing. I think RPGs could be really good for older adults!

Is there any more information about Hatheer anywhere other than what's in Qadira: Gateway to the East?

Even a population size would be helpful.

Thanks.

I'm looking for a monster with mind controlling and memory modification abilities.

It would need to be able to turn villagers against each other and then leave them not remembering what happened. Kidnaps people and they don't miss them.

And they would need to not be too high a CR (less than 10).

The DC for their mind control powers needn't be high because they'll be targeting commoners mainly.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

(Inspired by Robin Hobb's Fool's Quest.)

Hello,

I recently had my card declined for my AP subscription and couldn't figure out why. Then I remembered I'd moved house, updated my address with my bank and not updated my billing details here. Silly me.

I have just made another order (Dunes of Desolation) and was wondering whether the AP and Dunes can be shipped together to save me some shipping costs? Shipping to the UK is fairly hefty.

Thank you !

Scarab Sages

Hi, does the piercing thunder style feat allow for you to wield a polearm one-handed? It says you can treat a polearm as a light weapon whenever it would be advantageous to do so and a light-weapon can only be wielded one-handed.

Which AP is considered to be the hardest? In terms of the most challenging for players not for the GM to run.

Scarab Sages

Champions of Corruption has the Summon Evil Monster feat in it.

One of the new options at SMVI is to summon an efreet. Am I missing something or is that three wishes as many times as you can cast summon monster 6? So a summoner is able to not unreasonable get 33 wishes a day at level 11 (20 starting charisma plus level boosts plus headband x3).

Have I missed something where an efreet can't use its wish SLA if summoned?

I have an idea to build a character inspired by Bottle from the Malazan series.

Its for a military game my friend is putting together. I want to play a sly (but inexperienced, a bit naive) mage type with access to more "primal" magic than usual so I'm thinking shaman.

The problem is that in books Bottle's Warren in Meanas which in pathfinder terms would be primarily illusion.

If I go Nature Oracle I can get the abilities to speak to different types of animals (this is important to the concept even though its not a great hex to take).

Through wandering hex I can get wizard spells for the illusions and as a human I can get some of the classic cleric spells.

I want him to be a magical jack of all trades but master of none. Might have a tool that can just about do the job but not perfectly. We have no other dedicated caster so I need to do a lot. Does that make sense?

The rest of the party will be a human ranger (archery focused - longbow refluffed as a crossbow for *reasons*), half-orc (trell) alchemist (bomber - the sapper), human stalker (from path of war - there's always a sneaky knife specialist in the marines!), and an as yet unknown but they like playing straight up beat people over the head characters so likely a fighter or barbarian.

Stats were done by everyone rolling and we take the best persons rolls for each of us. We got: 17, 16, 16, 14, 11, 10

So... What to build for this special ops marine unit?

So we're two games into Kingmaker and our party bard has been penning songs about the encounters they've had so far. They've used songs to pretty good effect aside from their own as well (spotted a bandits leg poking from a tree and asked "can I roll to see if I know any comedies about inept ambushes to let them know we're aware of them".)

He wants to use songs to spread political messages. So far he's writing a song about Oleg and Svetta being abandoned to bandit predations by Brevoy, the bravery of pioneers etc. He intends to be making propaganda for the kingdom when they found it (I'll probably allow a bonus to the Promotion Edicts).

What I would like are suggestions on rules for writing songs, what DCs would be appropriate for making a truly great song and mechanics for them spreading around the region. I don't think I've seen anything about this anywhere.

Please can the classes have a table for the "Adolescence and Training" section of the background generator in Ultimate Campaign in the final book. I know it's a long way off and not something likely to be even on the radar just now but just registering my interest in them having it. It will make them feel more like 'real' classes to me if they get the same full treatment as other base classes.

Okay so I'm making an attempt at building a minionmancer.

I want to avoid taking Agent of the Grave as I want to keep the character True Neutral. In our home games undead can be Neutral and rarely, very rarely, good. So don't bring in anything about non-evil undead being wrong and awful please.

She's going to be a priest of Hanspur.

So my idea is to go Oracle (Juju) for one level taking Spirit Vessel and then Gravewalker witch with the Dimensions patron for the rest of it.

I'd get Animate Dead at the same time as a wizard would but as a 3rd level spell which is nice. And the ability of 6hd/level of Spirit Vessel would apply to my undead animated as a witch.

Traits: Magical Knack (Witch), Loreseeker (Animate Dead)
Feats:
1. Spell Focus (Necromancy)
h. Greater Spell Focus (Necromancy)
3. Varisian Tattoo (Necromancy)
4. Hex (Slumber)
5. Extra Hex (Dead Sexy) [3pp allows undead to be affected by spells that usually affect humanoids, including mind-affecting spells]
7. Spell Specialisation (Animate Undead)

That's as far as I've thought out the build as that's when she gets animate dead. And she'll be animating as an 11th level caster.

This is my first try at a minionmancer so what I'd like advice on is:

  • What other feats help with animate dead caster levels?
  • What magical items can help boost animate dead/necromancy?
  • If I take Extra Revelation and take Undead Servitude would the command DC of that ability scale with character level or be stuck as that of a 1st level oracle?
  • If it doesn't scale is there any other way to get the Command Undead feat usefully with a gravewalker witch?
  • Any particularly good spells for the Loreseeker trait?
  • I don't want to be an Agent of the Grave.

Hi guys,

I'm going to be playing in a game soon. My first thought was to play an Enchanter with insane social skills but someone else is going to be playing a wizard for their first time. As I've not played a melee character since a Warblade back in 3.5 I thought I'd give it a shot.

The game is going to be a modified Kingmaker set in the North of Golarion (Land of Linnorm Kings I think but as I've been working on a lot of homebrew Iobaria details with the GM maybe there, it's not set in stone - but an all together colder version of Kingmaker at any rate)

I've decided to opt for an Ulfen Shield warrior. Starting with ranger to level 6 to get earlier access to Shield Master. This is what I would intend the build to look like feat, skill, ability and trait wise at level 6.

stat block without magic items:

Alvar Duransson
Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger 6
N Medium Humanoid (human)
Init +3; Senses Perception +12
--------------------
Defense
--------------------
AC 21, touch 13, flat-footed 18 (+6 armor, +2 shield, +3 Dex)
hp 52 (6d10+12)
Fort +7 (+4 vs. hot or cold environments and to resist damage from suffocation), Ref +8, Will +5; +1 trait bonus vs. spells, spell-like abilities, and poison
--------------------
Offense
--------------------
Speed 20 ft.
Melee Heavy Shield Bash +12/+7 (2d6+8/x2) and
. . Armor spikes +11/+6 (1d6+5/x2) and
. . Dagger +11/+6 (1d4+5/19-20/x2)
Ranged Shortbow, composite +9/+4 (1d6+5/x3)
--------------------
Statistics
--------------------
Str 21, Dex 17, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 16, Cha 13

Base Atk +6; CMB +11; CMD 24

Languages Common, Dwarven, Giant, Skald

--------------------
Special Abilities
--------------------

Favored Enemy (Giants +4)
[b]Favored Enemy (Humans +2)
[b]Favored Terrain (Cold +2)

[b]Traits

Glint-Tongued
Glory of Old
Shield Bearer (Ulfen)

Drawbacks

Pride

Feats and level taken at
1: Power Attack -2/+4, Improved Shield Bash
2: Shield Slam
3: Endurance
5: Spiked Destroyer
6: Shield Master

I will probably take 3 or 4 levels of Fighter (Brawler) after this.
But what to do from there I have no idea and what I do from there affects early choices such as do I go spell-less ranger, do I bother taking an animal companion?

So knowledgeable people I ask:

Should I continue in Ranger after getting Close Combatant and Weapon Specialisation? (GM should rule that gloves of duelling work - I've allowed it for them before!)

Should I just swap over to fighter after level 6 in ranger?

What archetypes would be a good choice for either option (4 levels of fighter or 14 levels of fighter)?

Animal Companion or Companion Link?

Any other words of advice?!

I intend to dual-wield heavy shields eventually. So Double-Slice, Two-Weapon Rend, TWF tree will be taken. Won't be taking Bashing Finish or anything else that relies on crits.

Scarab Sages

Hello, I was wondering if any of you fine people know of a preexisting trait that swaps Sense Motive from being a (Wis) skill to an (Int) skill?

In the same way that Student of Philosophy swaps Bluff and Diplomacy for most aspects.

I've had a good look around but can't find anything but I don't have all books nor all datasets for herolab so...

Thanks!

Scarab Sages

I know that there haven't been any official prestige classes designed for an Oracle/Paladin but I was wondering whether anybody knew of any 3pp or homebrew options.

Something along the lines of how Rage Prophet partially advances both Barbarian and Oracle abilities.

I've come up blank searching for this!

Thanks in advance.

I'm re-reading Kingmaker with an aim to finally running it and while reading Rivers Run Red just came across the line, "If the PCs intervene, Grigori eloquently refutes any points they try to make". I know it's petty but it has incensed me.

The party would be the same level as him when they encounter him (near enough) and knowing my players there will be a Face character who will have insanely good social skills. Why then would Grigori be able to eloquently refute their points?

I'm thinking of having a series of opposed Perform: Oratory, Diplomacy, Bluff and Knowledge: Local (to represent that the PCs have been paying attention to what's been going on in their kingdom) checks in the form of a public forum to represent a battle for the hearts of the crowd. Just trying to figure out what would be decent DCs for the checks.

"eloquently refutes any points" pfffft.

Scarab Sages

What's the rationale behind this? They can cast cure spells as well as inflict spells. Curious as to why this (admittedly very minor) decision was made. Is it because all witches are supposed to be eeeevvviiiil and gross even if they actually aren't?

Scarab Sages

Hello,

Is there an existing faction for the Order of the Cypher? If so what book is it in?

If not, how would you go about making it?

I've just jotted down a skeleton of a faction, never made one before.

Spoiler:

Going from Inner Sea Magic I'd make them a Guild rather than an Academy as they appear to be more interested in the practical aspects of magic as well as the theory. So they'd give the standard Guild options.

Requirements:
Entrance Fee: 500gp (Possibly higher, they charge a fortune just to spend a night in the Cypher Lodge)
Entrance Exam: DC20 Knowledge (Arcana/History)
Tuition: 100gp/term (again, possibly more, if tuition includes board then 100gp won't even cover that for a term at 1gp/night for members)

Education
Education checks: Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (History), Linguisitcs, Spellcraft, [? Profession: Scribe?]
Term: Four Months
Flunk: 4 consecutive checks

Extracurricular tasks:
Cypher Hunter (+1 Fame): Once per term you can attempt to unlock a secret of Thassilonia. This may be through a breakthrough, revelatory discovery in a known piece of work (DC 25 spellcraft or linguistics) or through the discovery of new monuments.

So I can't seem to find what deities are the most worshipped in Irrisen. Any ideas on the most suitable deities for Winter Witches to worship?

(in my particular case I am making a lawful evil, human, winter witch but more general information would be appreciated).
Thanks!

Scarab Sages

I'm curious about Shimye-Magalla (the Bonuwat amalgam deity of Gozreh and Desna) and what alignment she has or what alignment her worshippers ascribe to her as it looks like she isn't a separate entity.

Heart of the Jungle doesn't give one and nor does Sargova or the Campaign setting. Gozreh being N and Desna CG leaves it up in the air.

I just got my first "GM Parent" blush of pride today.

Four sessions ago we had a guy join the group and play in a short Ravenloft game as a gnome illusionist, no real back story but they were learning the rules so it was fine. For the second session they had gone away and learnt more about the class, how illusions work etc. and was using silent image in clever ways. Third session they were playing as fluently as some of the people who'd been playing for years. Still no back story or real meat to their character.

Now I just started a Skull and Shackles campaign and they're the first person to hand me their back story and they actually went and bought Islands of the Shackles so they could know something about the setting AND asked me to roll knowledge checks to see what background information about his hometown the character would know as opposed to what he, as a player knows.

The backstory they gave me of a changeling summoner:

Spoiler:

A strikingly tall waif of a girl, with a mane of black hair reaching her waist. Lilith has remained surprisingly pale despite the warm climate of the shackles - one of the first things that draws the attention of others to her. The second thing strangers are likely to fix their gaze on are her strangely mismatched eyes - one light blue like the summer sea under the sun, one as black as a moonless night sky.

That Lilith has already lived as long as she has is a surprise in itself. As a baby she was found by a a sloop named the Covert Rooster floating on a crude raft in the vicinity of one of the outlying islets to the south of Widowmaker Isle. Brought aboard by the Covert Rooster's crew, she was taken in by the Captain, Henri de Belleville, who had been unable to conceive with his wife for many years and took Lilith's arrival as a gift from Besmara.

At first, Lilith's presence seemed to justify this conclusion. Journeys undertaken by the Covert Rooster, which specialised in smuggling contraband from Port Peril throughout the Shackles, always seemed to progress more smoothly with her aboard - the sloop always seeming guided by creatures of the sea [Besmara's Blessing trait].

At the age of fourteen, however, things started to change. Lilith, by this time a skilled sailor in her own right, continued to be helpful aboard, but once Henri and his wife were asleep at night, the boat would mysteriously change course, always heading back in the direction of Widowmaker Isle. One such change of course proved to be the undoing of the Covert Rooster, as on its return from a particularly long venture to Ilizmagorti she directed the boat into the outlying storms of the Eye of Abendego, wrecking the ship entirely. What became of the crew, and Captain de Belleville, is unknown. Lilith herself almost drowned, turning up over a week later in Drenchport, bedraggled and exhausted. It was about this time that fishermen started to notice a strange eel-like creature in the bay [Eidolon = Bokrug], which they claimed had large claws and teeth as long as a man's arm.

After the disaster, Lilith's all consuming desire to seek out Widowmaker Isle inexplicably ceased - it was as though a spell that had been cast on her had been suddenly lifted. Lilith worked as a barmaid in the Drowned Dwarf in Drenchport, looking to sign on with a free captain while gathering together enough money to buy her own ship.

Her time in Drenchport did not however go well. Within two months of her arrival there, she fell foul of the followers of one of the newer sects in the Shackles- the Cult of the Eye. Disciples of this cult believe the Eye of Abendego to be the birth pangs of a new deity, sometimes called the Deluged God. A few of Lilith's misplaced remarks about what a whore the mother of such a god must be to have an orifice that large infuriated the cult clerics in Drenchport, who branded her a heretic.

The arrival of Captain Thomas Every shortly after this episode was therefore fortuitous. It was a stormy spring morning when Lilith observed the Jaundiced Outlook berthing at Drenchport docks, and a man with a rather fine hat disembark. Drenchport being rather limited in its entertainment, Lilith was not surprised to find him nursing a pint of black kelp beer at the Drowned Dwarf when she began her shift later that afternoon. Striking up a conversation with him she discovered he was a Free Captain, and by his fifth pint she had convinced him to let her sign on.

Any one else got stories of players growing, making them proud?

Scarab Sages

Hi there. I'm due to run Skull & Shackles as a play by post for my long time real life group (I no longer live in the same country) and I'm in the process of getting all the players sheets, back stories etc. One player is going to be playing as a Changeling with the sea Lungs trait.

Now, I'd quite like them, as a side quest, to encounter their mother at some point and was wondering whether there are any short adventures out there featuring a sea hag as the main protaganist.

I've found "The Sea Witch" so far but would be interested in any other that might be published in say Dungeonor elsewhere. Edition doesn't matter, I'll convert it, and level doesn't either though lower level is better

Thanks in advance!

Are there any plans for a book detailing the nations and races of the seas? Or does such a book already exist and my google-fu has let me down terribly.

The only return I get is for the Sunken Empires 3pp book.

I'd love to have some solid information on the aboleths, sahuagin, merfolk etc

Scarab Sages

This is my first post here so hello everybody.

I've been thinking about the summoner class and what it loses by taking a prestige class. The malconvoker seems like a good fit but with what a summoner loses (eidolon and SLAs as well as a caster level) I thought of turning it into a feat chain instead. I'm removing the alignment restriction because I like the idea of a diabolist summoning demons to use against demons and vice versa rather than just using evil to fight evil. edit: just to clarify, the feats still only apply to evil summons.

Something like:
Deceptive summons: Extend [General]
Requires: Spell Focus: Conjuration, Augement Summons, Bluff 4
Benefit: (as class feature).

Deceptive Summons: Fury [General]
Requires: Deceptive Summons: Extend, Bluff 8
Benefit: (as class feature)

Fiendish Legion [General]
Requires: Deceptive summons: Fury, Bluff 9
Benefit: (as class feature)

and so on.

I know that fiendish legion is like twin spell for free but with the amount of feats you'd have to invest to get it do people think this is okay or too powerful? suggestions?
