No, no. This is a cafe by a Greek American family here. They've had a successful wholesale business for 16 years but never a storefront and no experience on that side of things. I hired on to help them with that but there was a long delay when the deal for the original space didn't work out. This place is turning out to be very successful. We are still working out details toward my own project.

Throughout the planning Ezreal was intent on that whisper in the dream that led him here. Bring the light from the dark. Clearly that referred to Lightbringer, and if the prophecy wanted him out of the Mournland... well it might take some time. Ezreal is brooding over that before his argument with Gil, but as she breaks off he turns to regard his companions before leaving. Through the gloom a pair of softly glowing green eyes his attention as they approach the others. The mage walks over to hear the introductions and the more he hears the more he begins to doubt his initial reading of the prophecy. Here was another powerful agent of the Silver Flame or the light, ready to leave the dark of the Mournland. It could be that it was never about Lightbringer who truly seemed decided to remain in the dark.

"Hmm. Gil, I believe I may owe you an apology. Prophecy is a curious thing and... I was hasty and short sighted. It seems mine may yet be tangled up with you all and the khyber shards."

Maybe not the most elegant, but that was a shameless attempt to write myself back in and complete the personal prophecy PrC condition at the same time. ;)

I agree with pretty much everything these guys are saying. I'll just add that I think shifters often got the short end of the stick from a player perspective because it was a race which can be customized with cool tricks and abilities- at the cost of your feats. Feats were even more precious in 3.5 and having race and class compete for the same limited resource was not an attractive option.

Thanks for running this Gm Garrett. I haven't really figured out what to do with this character as far as a personality but I do have an idea of how the game plays now and I like it. I actually lowered my computers score before we started and spread some points out because I thought I might be over specialized in one thing, but it turns out... those DCs were hard for me to hit!

Thanks to the other players too for making it all the way through despite the forums becoming more or less non functional for most of a week in the middle there. I'd look forward to running into any of you on any future pbp games :)

I'll look for the Chronicle sheet as a PM whenever you manage GM.

We played our first Beginner's Box game with Ith Jr and a friend with his 2 kids. So players aged 45, 8, 6 and 4. Our boy totally bypassed the heroes and picked up a werewolf pawn for his character. I made him a fighter and just renamed the weapon into "Claws" then asked him what his werewolf's name was. He thought about it for about a minute and said "Deathwolf. His name is Deathwolf."

I'm very much looking forward to the continued adventures of Deathwolf and friends.

"In light of what we have learned about the Dreaming Dark and its plans here, I have spent some time now delving into previous planar events and how they were repelled. The further I dig the more I find the Draconic Prophecy wound tight and merging through these events and so my study broadens to include it. You may or may not know, but delving deep enough into the prophecy comes with its own risks as it is a mutable living thing. If you reach out, it sometimes reaches back.

Last night I had a dream, that was not a dream. I walked the Mournland again. In the distance was a tower blazing with such an intense silver light that I could not look upon it. A voice whispered, 'Bring the light from the dark...' All around me the dead soil began to stir and warforged soldiers began clawing their way out of the sterile ground. The few became hundreds, then thousands. I heard a voice behind me that I recognised as Darkheart, say 'All flesh must be destroyed.' As I turned to see him, Darkheart raised one hand and engulfed me in flames. At that point I woke.

Ezreal pauses again for a moment. "I know what you must be thinking, but I know dreams. This was not just a dream. I believe the Prophecy is reaching out to deliver Lightbringer because he has some unknown part to play. Were it not for this..." he waves his hand, "omen or what have you, I would agree with Janosz. As much as I want to return for Lightbringer we have a mission that takes priority. But now... It may be that Lightbringer is integral to the success of that mission. Or to other events that we have no idea about. Prophesy is like a snake always twisting away as you try to grasp it and I cannot pretend that I have a true and full understanding."

"So lets entertain the idea for a moment. First of all, if Gil can ward us from scrying through the day I think I have worked out a method to ward our dreams. I will need to prepare, but it can be done. Second- if we are to go for Lightbringer it will be nothing like before. We want a precision strike team and extraction. We do not know exactly where he is, but we can prepare and find out in ways that we never could have before. Once we have some idea we can track our way there, teleport in, hammer our way through to get him and teleport out. But before that we have to make some preparations for the difficulty of the Mournland and I suggest we not do that in Sharn where too many eyes and ears are listening. Then we have the issue that as soon as we sleep tonight all of our plans may be revealed. I cannot ward us yet, but I might with a scroll or if we pay someone else to do it. From tomorrow I can shield our dreams."

"In any case, whether we go now or not in the long run the Lord of Blades is becoming an existential threat to the people of Khorvaire. We will not stop that by a detour, but we might gain some idea of what is going on in the mists."

All three branches of government will be controlled by the same party now. To some degree that wrecks our checks and balances. We will be relying on his own party to reign him in. The only power the other party still holds is filibuster in the senate and the rules can be changed to eliminate it if they want.

I'll refrain from going on because I don't want to stir up aggravation where we come to have some fun, but for progressives some reasonable level of despair is in order. I trust they will curtail anything too wild on foreign policy but the party is lock step on turning back a lot of progress domestically.

"We found the Cannith facility. The aberrant warforged were the project of a renegade artificer involved with the cult of the Dragon Below. He was given three Khyber shards containing the trapped souls of planar refugees from Dal Quor, lost for millenia to the shards, and began secretly imprinting them through the creation forge. They discovered his unsanctioned work and shut it down, but he escaped and it seems the Day of Mourning ended House Cannith's effort to recall the corrupted warforged."

"This begins to explain resistance that we have run into since we first took an interest in these unique warforged and the project that created them. How familiar are you with Dal Quor and the Quori?"

"Dal Quor, the Realm of Dreams, goes through epochal cycles of destruction and creation. Along with the realm, inhabitants are destroyed and reshaped in the image of the new paradigm. The previous cycle reshaped the vast majority of inhabitants to the monstrous Quori we know now ruled by the Dreaming Dark. The kalashtar we know today are the descendants of refugees Quori who did not bow to the Dreaming Dark. I have not understood exactly why, but the Dreaming Dark are willing to go to great lengths to end the existence of those original sixty seven kalashtar and their expanded lineage. Obtaining the shards would enable them to end three of them outright."

"On the one hand, at this point this would seem to be a minor dispute between planar creatures that has little to do with the interests of Karrnath. On the other, we have learned that the Quori have been engaged in a centuries long breeding project allowing them access to our plane through host bodies. Beyond that, they are currently constructing a monolith here in Breland across the river from Sharn. As construction nears completion instances of nightmares, sudden psychotic episodes, and other inexplicable behavior and occurrences are on the rise. All signs point toward the Dreaming Dark working toward an eventual planar invasion. It may be that after 40,000 years their world is ready for another cycle and they are looking for an escape. The last time they tried that the Giant Empires of Xen'drik threw their entire plane out of alignment with Eberron, but it destroyed Xen'drik and ended the Age of Giants in the process. I think it is time to consider the Dreaming Dark an existential threat to the stability of Khorvaire. If you have any of the Inspired working as consuls, ambassadors or advisers it is time to reconsider their motives. Not half an hour ago, we were attacked personally by the Riedran Under-Secretary to Sharn and a squad of ogre magi intent on reclaiming those shards. Her level of psychic ability was unlike anything I have encountered previously and the six of us, who have traveled extensively through Droaam, the Mournland, and the heart of the lich necromancer Gath's tomb were lucky to make an escape and teleport here."

"As you know, my field of study was the Giant conflict with the Quori of another age and lost magic from the height of their empire. The expedition to Xen'drik has been long postponed, but that ancient conflict seems to have found me here in Khorvaire."

"What's this demon maze Murray? Explain!"

I think we have essentially cleared the complex at this point. We would want to check the room with the rope to the water source for good measure, though water source means potential natural predators. Think about that before sending down Murray as a snack for over sized underdark lobsters or whatever. It seems like the other route to the demon maze and the surface is an exit from the complex for the next phase, but we need to report back to the mongrelman camp and regroup with our injured npcs before heading toward the surface.

"Before we go over there, there are a few things you should know. Temples to the Keeper do not welcome strangers. To be honest they do not welcome the faithful either. Generally the entire structure exists as a tool for teaching their religious philosophy which revolves around submission to eventual decay. In most cases Temples are arranged to emphasize the soul’s journey from birth to ultimate annihilation, being broadly linear in design with shrines and chapels dedicated to different aspects of the deity."

"The Temple also exists as a practical teaching tool you might say. They are usually designed to help you along that path to ultimate annihilation. We are talking traps, undead guardians and clergy who might welcome you with indifference, but are just as likely to throw a flame strike your way to see if the Keeper was ready to welcome you home today. It is all a way of testing the mettle of the faithful and instilling both toughness and serenity in the face of mortality."

"That reminds me- Gath, as a follower of the Keeper likely differs from any other lich you may have read or head about. He has not undergone the process out of any desire for immortality. There is no place for immortality in the faith. Everything falls apart, decays and dies in the end. The undead worshipers have merely passed another test in their spiritual journey allowing them to survive that much longer before the inevitable. He is almost certainly a nihilist. I would expect a typical lich to value self preservation above all else. It engenders a certain cowardice should they fear the end is near. Gath will have none of this. If a follower of the Keeper thought he was likely to be killed, taking you with him would potentially be a higher priority than self preservation."

"These kind of Temples are rare. Judging by Gaia's map this is one of the largest ones I have ever heard about, a Grand Hall dedicated to the God of Death if you will. Like I said, the structure itself serves as an instructor in the doctrine of the faith. We should expect to encounter halls built around the themes of Impermanence, Inevitability, Futility, Resilience, Sacrifice, Submission, and Extinction. There will be multiple shrines dedicated to different aspects of the Keeper like The Reaper, The Weaver, The Glutton, and The Fiery Scourge. Aside from that we can expect to run across mortuaries and catacombs as well as places for contemplation and teaching."

Whoops. I remembered Ranticar's name, but misremembered in that I thought he had already fenced the shard to Jeeboo. I've been trying to keep a more focused look at the larger plot line recently because it unspools so slowly due to format that we sometimes end up having forgotten things that happened the day before in game time. Also (and this is a bonus) it is complicated with lots of bits and movers and shakers and subplots to remember. I love that as a feature, but it requires a little more note taking on our part that we haven't been in a habit of doing. It just happens that now when we need to access some of that info I'm barely logging in at all due to schedule and I might need to start doing searches to confirm that I remember correctly before I tried to post all cynical and know it all IC. On Monday afternoon we'll be back to me in Paris solo and posting during my free time.

Intrigued by this compulsion thing. Although it has been a long time since it first game up in real time, within the game didn't we just learn about it yesterday? It /was/ on this Sharn trip right? It was the Kundarak bankers who told us. I intended to look into that ASAP, but I thought I'd do it discretely without pissing off Rolund if possible. Arcane sight has the problem of turning your eyes glowing blue so I thought I might do it while he was asleep tonight. Now that it has been acknowledged as an imminent threat, consideration for his feelings will be out the window.

We are looking for the khyber shards that used to be in the creation forge we just visited in the Mournland. Specifically the one containing Goshanan (?) the kalashtar / quori philosopher specialized in... preventing or subverting the cyclical nature of Dal Quor if I am remembering that half right.
These guys might not have him, but the shards were last seen fenced to Jeboo (not totally sure on that part) and the aberrant lord here would want at least one of the shards because it houses some kind of khyber entity that presumably imprinted on Darkheart the warforged when the creation forge was active- as our guy imprinted on 606, the autistic warforged.

PS - how come Nev does such massive damage?

I was trying to figure it out too because I know next to nothing about psionics and it may come up in another game.

-Base is 2d6+7 for a great sword.
-Add 2 damage because the called weapon is +2 for 2d6+9
-Becomes 2d6+10 with chain of personal superiority
-Add one damage while tranced/psionically focused for 2d6+11
-Double the base damage dice from vital strike, 4d6+11
-If he is power attacking that would grant +9 damage. (+6*1.5)
= 4d6+20.
Not sure about the last point.

So the attacks are taking -3 to hit for power attack balanced by:
+2 blessing of fervor (can't stack with the +1 from haste)
+1 from chain of personal superiority
+2 from the called weapon
+1 from trance/psionic focus
That comes out the the +18 to hit Nev is rolling.

Be careful about going nova Nev. We tend to run through a lot of encounters in a day and this is the first. I typically burn through nearly every spell slot and some scrolls or wand charges in a day.

NOTE: Vital Strike is a standard action and from what I understand can't be used on AoO's

Ezreal takes Nevharath aside, "I can't speak to Rodergo's motivations in pursuing this any farther, but I can give you a different perspective. We have tangled with this particular Quori several times now in its quest to recover these khyber shards with a different outsider bound to each. One of those shards being your man Goshasanan. From what little I've studied about your home plane I understand that the entire thing is wiped clean and reshaped continuously throughout the eons. Your guy was something of a philosopher and scientist whose field of study was this cyclical apocalypse. So why would the Dreaming Dark take a special interest in him? I speculate that it is because they know their days are numbered. Perhaps they are looking to subvert the next cycle. My concern is that their plan involves planar invasion, escaping their own plane before the clock runs down. They have done it before in another age long lost. We know that period as the end of the Giant empire of Xen d'rik. Since that age and due to enormous sacrifice the gates do not open as they once did. They will need a lighter touch this time. Perhaps something similar to how your own people escaped Dal Quor before the last cycle ended? Similar, but on a mass scale. I cannot say how it connects, but Khorvaire has seen enough war for now. If Fourgri wants Goshasanan so badly I am certain it is in all of our interests to ensure that does not happen. Better yet- we need to annihilate Fourgri to make certain that he is finished. I expect that Fourgri is either the Quori counterpart to Goshasanan- their scholar working on preventing the next cycle, or he is the muscle for an entity who we have yet to encounter."

I can't remember how much we have learned about the Inspired along the way.

Back Post

It was good to be back in the civilized world. On his first night back Ezreal took a good long visit to a local bathhouse in Cassan's Bridge and soaked in a bath so hot it was barely tolerable. Eyes closed he emptied his mind and let the horrors of the Mournland flow out of him while forcing all of it out of his mind. All except Lightbringer's sacrifice. That he wouldn't be forgetting under any circumstance.

Ezreal had never been able to think of the apartment he and Janosz shared as anything more than a safehouse, but sitting at his dusty neglected desk with tomes and scrolls spread out around him, he found that it suddenly bothered him. Try as he might to focus on unraveling the mechanical script in the 'forged caster's spellbook his thoughts kept wandering places that he didn't want to dwell on. Ez grabbed his jacket and headed out for a stroll through the neighborhood.

While Cassan's Bridge was an ideal place to lay low, it surely spoke more to Janosz and his roots than it did to Ezreal. After some time wandering among the smell of unfamiliar street food, faces and architecture he found himself standing at a skycoach platform and feeling more alienated and alone than he had in a long time. True he had been traveling and working as an effective team with this motley crew, but did he trust them? A cleric of the Silver Flame? Hardly. The elf was fairly likely to get them all killed one day. Rolund and Cassandra? Maybe least of all. They were countrymen of a sort, but in truth Karrnath had many factions angling for power since the war's end. Whose pocket were they in? If he had been left behind in the Mournland would any of them come back for him? He sighed rubbing his temples and hailed a skycoach. Right now he needed some discrete companionship without worries or attachment to unwind. "Firelight" he said when the driver asked.

Back in Cassan's Bridge later that day he set an unseen servant to work scrubbing the place and tidying up. By the time Janosz made it home that night it was spotless, with some kind of flowering potted plant in the entry way and a new rug. Ezreal was at ease buried in tomes and scrolls spread out all across the desk with take away food on their rickety dining table. He nodded to the Marcher without doing more than glancing up, "Help yourself Janosz. More than enough there."

"Whoa now! I got ya!" Valeros lunges out to grab Alie when she falls, but she slips between his arms thudding into the ground at his feet. "Uh... Almost? Sorry kid."

"More directly to your point of interest, it seems that Ranticar had made some unauthorized modifications to the creation forge. He had obtained three khyber shards each containing a bound outsider from the Church of the Keeper and implanted them in the logic distillation matrix. I believe that answers the question as to how the warforged known as 773 came to identify as your lost philosopher Goshasanan. It also means that Goshasanan is likely alive, a prisoner, was last seen in the hands of a potentially mad artificer more than five years ago and we can safely assume Fourgri learned all of this before its escape."

"Falen Grant was also dispatched to retrieve Ranticar more than five years ago, but it is uncertain if he continued with the contract once his clients were obliterated on the Day of Mourning."

Also, I think the whole Dragon Rumor on the Mercantile District turning out to be a Bat is utter and total crap. Paizo's APs, while I love them, are always really low on dragons, which I think sucks (even more if you consider the original name of the game); and this would be a real let down for my players. I'm SO putting a Dragon running that District.

I'm going to add in one of the kongomatos from the bestiary in Sanctum of the Serpent God. It will have to be something for later (CR 15) but it could make some appearances in the sky well before hand. They get a dragon to fight (or encounter or make some use of) at some point and it is unique to the Mwangi expanse. Not so smart, no spells, brutal strength and sonic breath weapon.

I kind of think it would be funny if the pc's were boasting to the natives about the "dragon" they killed because they thought the natives were just that dumb and about the point the kongomato flies over.

Also it is one aspect of the Eberron world that we have only touched on through npcs. I wouldn't mind seeing a full psychic kalashtar in action.

Because it seems no one is able to finalize this, I've done it here by compiling things people have already said with things that seem like a good idea to me. We already know this dragon is dangerous. Burning some expendables to give us an edge seems like the thing to do. This includes only the things we have already cast before going in.

Before any casting Alwyn drops silence on a rock and tosses it in the tunnel entrance to cover the sound of our extensive chanting.

Elisile also has dimension door prepped. Between them they can manage a couple of large sized bruisers and still get everyone except Camlo who can speed through the tunnel as he is small so lets save a round of buffing during the fight and send them in large sized.

Once this list is cast Vethran can D-Door in: Vethran, LARGE Hudak, and Illes.
Elisile can D-Door in: Elisile and LARGE Alwyn.
Hasted, Cam will clear the tunnel in a move action.

Alwyn- Divine Favor and Divine Power don't stack. Both are luck bonuses and Power completely overlaps and adds on to Favor. Save the slot for a spontaneous heal I guess.

Hudak:
-Stoneskin (from Vethran, DR 10, adamantium. Max 90 damage.)
-protection from energy acid (Vethran)
-Fly (Vethran's scroll)
-protection from evil (Alwyn)
-bull's strength (Alwyn)
-Blessing of Fervor (Alwyn)
-extended haste (Illes 18 rounds)
-Sonic Weapon (Illes +1d6 sonic damage)
-Inspire Courage (Illes +4 att/dam, +4 charm/fear)
-Enlarged by Illes Wand (10 rounds only)

Alwyn:
-protection from energy acid (Vethran via channel the gift)
-Fly (Elisile)
-Extended Divine Power
-Blessing of Fervor
-Righteous Might
-extended haste (Illes 18 rounds)
-Sonic Weapon (Illes +1d6 sonic damage)
-Heroism (Illes from a scroll, +2 morale on all saves, attacks, and skill checks. The attack bonus will stack with inspire courage because one is morale, the other competence. Save bonuses do NOT stack with Inspire Courage)
-Inspire Courage (Illes +4 att/dam, +4 charm/fear)

Vethran:
-protection from energy acid (channel the gift)
-false life from his sihedron medallion 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 temp hps
-protection from evil to get another +1 resistance on saves
-potion of fox's cunning to boost save DCs
-fly
-shield
-Blessing of Fervor (Alwyn)
-extended haste (Illes 18 rounds)
-Inspire Courage (Illes +4 att/dam, +4 charm/fear)

Illes:
-mirror image 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 images

-scroll of eagle's splendor for spell DCs
-extended haste (Illes 18 rounds)
-Inspire Courage (Illes +4 att/dam, +4 charm/fear)
-Blessing of Fervor (Alwyn)

Elisile:

-Shield
-protection vs evil (to get +1 more resistance on all saves)
-mirror image 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 images
