While playing the Doomsday Dawn The Lost Star Scenario, we had some difficulty with using knowledges.

First, unlike in the old Pathfinder rulebook, Pathfinder 2.0 doesn't have a nice section that says what knowledges are used to identify what items or monsters. We didn't really know how to identify a monster or how to determine the DC. We also looked in the Playtest Bestiary, but although the little box at the top of a type of monster lists things like evil, demon, humanoid, etc, it didn't say what type of knowledge to use to identify it or how much information you get from your DC. Maybe we missed it in the playtest rulebook, but identifying monsters from what we were used to previously did not go smoothly.

Second, although exploration mode is flexible in timeframe, we were surprised to find that identifying a magic item took an hour to focus on in game. When we found the healing potion when searching one of the goblins, it would have been nice to use it right away instead of assuming an hour went by before being able to identifying it.

The Exchange

Our group ran a number of the quests and scenarios for the playteat yesterday. Although a GM could go on to the paizo website and report the rose street murders scenario to get GM credit, they couldn't find an option to report the first chapter of doomsday dawn. We know there is the playteat credit sheet where at some point in the future we will get credit for completing playteat stuff, but how come GMs can't report and get credit for the chapters like the scenarios, unless I am missing something.

The Exchange

I got the shipment notification the other week that Amazon would be shipping the items to my house sometime within the next couple of weeks. Weren't they supposed to also appear as PDFs in my digital content as well? So far they haven't popped up.

The Exchange

Okay, so I ended up going through each scenario listing on the Paizo website, finding the map post from Thurston, copied it and added to this page. Hopefully some of you will find it useful to see the maps associated with each scenario so far.

The Exchange

Yeah, but wouldn't it be nice to see them all in one place? That way you could see what maps are used most often/multiple scenarios vs maps that were only use for one scenario.

The Exchange

Okay, I did a search for maps that are used in scenarios and didn't find exactly what I was looking for. So if it is out there, please point me in the right direction. If not, here is what I am looking for:
Is there a forum/post/webpage that is available showing the list of maps that are associated with each Starfinder scenario? I only play Starfinder Society so I don't need to buy maps that aren't specifically tied to a scenario, but I would love to buy the maps that are. I found some of what I was looking for in last years Gencon forum, but it was only for the first few Starfinder scenarios that were available at Gencon. Here is what I have found so far:

Although some of this has already previously been mentioned, here is what I would like to see on the chronicle sheet:

1. I think there should be some benefit to the items listed on the chronicle sheet that are available for purchase. They should either be available at a discounted price for playing that specific scenario or be a slightly different item such as a wand with a reduced number of charges. Having things listed on the chronicle sheet that a character can already buy at first level is redundant.

2. I would love to see a way to track monsters that we see on a chronicle sheet and a way that if the character successfully identified a monster, it could recall some of that information or have a bonus to its identification in future scenarios. I think that it is silly if someone sees something in a scenario, they somehow totally forget what it is in future scenarios.

The Exchange

Since the official beta Playtest doesn't begin until August, how will these playtests work at Origins? Any word yet on benefits to playing them? I am assuming there will be some type of chronicle sheet a character can earn that we can use in the future?

The Exchange

I am also curious if there will be an associated chronicle sheet. I have noticed that the newer books don't have the pathfinder tales chronicle sheets. Although I enjoy reading the books, it was always an awesome bonus that there was also some incentive associated with Pathfinder Society.

The Exchange

So I know Origins is having some issues of their own with the whole events registration going on today. Does anyone know if the missing PFS events is related or did something get messed up on Paizo's end?

The Exchange

I tried doing a search for Origins 2018, but didn't see any associated forums. Please let me know if this was already brought up in another forum.

I am perusing the events for Origins 2018 and saw that there are some PFS Playtests throughout the convention. Since I didn't think the rulebooks were going to be available until August, how is this going to work? Are these run by Paizo? Are there going to be any special boons associated with participating in them?

1. PFS Playtest Scenario #1: The Rose Street Revenge (Level 1 characters provided)
Description: There are two different play tests that are currently listed:
A wave of abductions and killings has struck Absalom, and when a Pathfinder falls prey to this criminal, the PCs set out to find the culprit and solve the so-called Rose Street Revenge.

2. Pathfinder Playtest Demo (Level 1 characters provided)
Description: Come playtest the new evolution of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Test your mettle against an evil priest and his vile minions! Characters provided.

Does anyone know the difference between the two listings? I am excited to try out the new Pathfinder stuff, just didn't realize it was going to be available at Origins.

The Exchange

Thanks for the responses.

The Exchange

When I was at GENCON 2017 this year, three PFS scenarios (two of which were specials) and the Starfinder 1-01 scenario. I have checked my Pathfinder Society account, but so far, I haven't received credit for any of the sessions I participated in at GENCON. How do I make sure I get credit for those sessions since they aren't showing up?

The Exchange

Thanks for the detailed response Thurston!

The Exchange

I was assuming that was the case as well; however, with the two examples above, one specifically states that a pregen is available and no materials are required and the second doesn't say anything about pregens and says that you must provide your own materials.

The Exchange

So now that some Starfinder events have been posted to the GENCON events page by Paizo I am interested in trying it out.

Although some of the scenarios, such as Starfinder Society: #1-00: Claim to Salvation, said that all materials will be provided including a level 4 pregen. However, the initial scenario for first level characters, Starfinder Society: #1-01: The Commencement, says that materials are not provided for this game. You must bring your own.

My question is, if the core rulebook isn't available until GENCON, do we have to get in line and obtain the book to play in any of the scenarios that don't provide materials? Will there be pregens? Will there be cheat sheets?

I know there are the "Quest Pack" hour long missions, I was just hoping to try out one of the scenarios before getting the chance to purchase the Core Rulebook.

The Exchange

I too have tried searching and although I can find Pathfinder and Starfinder events, they don't seem to be associated with the ones that Paizo are actually running. Any idea on when we might see some listed?

The Exchange

Thanks for the clarification!

The Exchange

Are there any primary or secondary success conditions? Or areas that we don't play? Sometimes extra rules are applied to "streamline" the modules for Pathfinder Society play. And what would the XP and Prestige be for completing it?

The Exchange

So I am getting ready to run the Godsmouth Heresy for my PFS group and was able to download the chronicle sheet through the product webpage here: http://paizo.com/products/btpy8hil?Pathfinder-Module-The-Godsmouth-Heresy. But the download didn't include any special rules for playing the module. Am I missing something or do we just run the whole book for PFS credit?

The Exchange

Thanks for the fast clarification on the points above!

The Exchange

I am working on one of the terrakineticists. And the first thing I found hard to go through was the wild talents order. So looking at each of the different elements a kineticists can be, it lists the different wild talents you can get at each level. Then on page 7 the list starts of all of those wild talents until page 15. Currently they are in alphabetical order. Personally, I would think it would flow much better if they were placed in order in a similar fashion as spells, where there are first listed by level and then within that level order they are listed alphabetically.

My second point, is a question in regards to the terrakineticists' Flesh of Stone ability. The ability says you can have DR1/adamantine as an immediate action and then dismiss it whenever you want. What is preventing you from just always having the ability on. When you start a scenario you advise the GM that your Flesh of Stone is on and that you have no intention of turning it off. From the way I understand it, you only take burn damage if you increase the DR.

Third point, does Arcane Spell Failure apply to Wild Talents? It states that wild talents are typically spell-like abilities, they have spell levels, and you have to do concentration checks. Kineticists are proficient in light armor, some of which have Arcane Spell Failure chances. I didn't know if your ability to control the elements was going to be affected by this or not and would like clarification.

Starglim wrote:
Where are you seeing any mention of a 15-foot cone? It's a standard cone of 30 feet length, originating at a corner of your space.

I hadn't seen any mention of the "15-foot cone", that was why I was asking. It only stated "cone shaped burst" in the spell description. All of the spells I have previously (like burning hands) have been 15 foot cone burst. However, I just looked that spell up for comparison and now it makes sense that the snowball spell is 30'. I guess with a little more research I could have figured out the answer. Just needed clarification because I didn't know if the 30' was the range that the origin point could be or the size of the cone.

The Exchange

So Flurry of Snowballs has a Range of 30' and it is a cone-shaped burst. Is it a 30' cone shaped burst or can you cast it up to 30' away as a 15' cone shaped burst? It was just unclear to me how large the cone-shaped burst was for the spell.

The Exchange

You could always use Star Wars miniatures. They are the same scale as Pathfinder miniatures and I believe they used to be made by the same people. They don't make them anymore, but I am sure you could find a bunch of battle droids on Ebay or something.

The Exchange

Thanks for the clarification! I was only basing on it's book location of Adventurer's Armory based on one of the previous postings of the thread. Thanks for letting me know where to find it. And yes, it would be for a PFS game.

The Exchange

So if it is listed in the core rulebook, even though the mechanics aren't listed there, can you utilize the mechanics if you don't have the Adventurer's Armory? Or is that whetstone considered a different whetstone?

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

So since the below comment was from 2012, and the dimensional step is still present in the PDF copies available for the low subtier, do I get to ignore the dimensional step or did they change their mind since then and decide to leave that ability in at the low sub-tier?

Mark Moreland wrote:

I will be adjusting the encounter to remove dimensional step in the low subtier. That was an unfortunate error that our statblock generator slipped in, and the encounter was built around it. Getting that fixed is high on my scenario fixes agenda.

As for the imp, you'll note that Duchess isn't Aglorn's familiar in the low subtier; she's got a CR and it's calculated into the total for the encounter. In the low subtier, Aglorn's arcane bond is a ring.

The Exchange

Okay, so I am confused on the number of spells Desimire can cast (for the low tier).

Based on the Table: Wizard (found here: http://paizo.com/prd/classes/wizard.html) A Wizard casts 1 3rd lvl spell, 2 2nd lvl spells, and 3 1st lvl spells. Because of Desimire’s IQ of 18 he gets an additional spell for each of those levels and his arcane bonded ring grants him one more spell.

So based on the tactics, he runs out of spells. Here is how I see it going:

Before Combat he casts mage armor and false life reducing his available spells to 1st:3, 2nd:2, 3rd:3

During combat he casts two summon monster III spells and one summon monster II spell reducing his available spells to 1st:3, 2nd:1, 3rd:1

Then he casts a fireball using up his last 3rd level spell.

Then he casts dispel magic, which is also a 3rd level spell….how is this cast since he used his last 3rd level spell with the fireball?

Can someone tell me if my thought process is correct or how I messed up my math?

The Exchange

yeah, I didnt reply to the correct post and was talking about fire belch. It makes sense that it isnt on the additional resources page, i just didn't know if it was somewhere else.

The Exchange

What about having it assigned as one of your first companions tricks. My concern is that since other than being mentioned as a trick that a character uses in a module, it isn't identified as a trick anywhere else as far as I know. If I were to try to use it with my animal during a PFS scenario, how legal would it be?

Kenji Elindir wrote:

Once you get your Big Cat to level 7 it gets grab and no longer takes AoOs for grappling.

PRD wrote:
If you do not have Improved Grapple, grab, or a similar ability, attempting to grapple a foe provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver.
Emphasis mine.

The Exchange

Thanks for your previous answer, now I have another question. In the same module I obtained my owl bear in, one of the animals in the module had the "fire belch" trick. The chronicle sheet didn't grant this for us to train our animal companion. Is this a trick we can teach our animal companions? If so, is it referenced somewhere and is it PFS legal? I would love to use that trick, just not sure if it is legal.

The Exchange

I love all the work that has been put into this thread. I have very little experience with animal companions and have a character who will now obtain one in a couple of levels.

So essentially I have one clarification question but for two different scenarios, both of which are mainly clarifying the no training required for your FIRST animal to teach them tricks.

As stated above, I have not had a whole lot of experience with animal companions. So here is the first scenario:

I was running a game as a GM. At the end of the night when chronicle sheets were being handed out, one of the players asked me to oversee his animal being trained a trick. He succeeded at a roll and I marked on his chronicle sheet that his animal learned a new trick. This was a low level scenario and I am pretty sure that the players animal companion was their first animal companion. Based on what I have seen and have come to understand, the first Animal Companion you obtain you don’t have to train it any of the tricks because it comes already trained. So this player should not have needed to train its companion a trick since it was the initial animal companion, right? Are there times when your initial Animal Companion will need to be trained a new trick?

So the same answer to the above question will probably answer this to. I also recently GM’d a certain scenario that provided an owlbear on a chronicle sheet. Since I was a GM I knew this in advance and made sure my Ranger was a Beastmaster Ranger which will eventually acquire said owlbear. So when I reach level 4 when my Beastmaster Ranger gets their first animal companion, will my owlbear already know all of the tricks and I just have to identify the specifics tricks it has? So manipulating the bear stats to make the owl bear I got this:

OwlBear
Starting Statistics: Size Small; Speed 40 ft.; AC +2 natural armor; Attack bite (1d4), 2 claws (1d3); Ability Scores Str 15, Dex 15, Con 13, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 10; Special Qualities low-light vision, scent.
4th-Level Advancement: Size Medium; Attack bite (1d6), 2 claws (1d4); Ability Scores Str +4, Dex –2, Con +2.

Essentially the only thing that changed was the Charisma score.

So using the stats, the number of tricks an owlbear starts with are Intelligence x3 = 2 x 3 = 6. The tricks I figured the owlbear would start with are attack, attack, stay, heel, down, seek. I do not need to do any training rolls since the owlbear start off knowing their tricks. Since I only have 6 tricks (if I did my math correctly) why wouldn’t you always choose heel instead of come. By giving the command of heel, doesn’t your animal “come” to your side automatically?

Sorry in advanced for the long winded post!

The Exchange

Okay, so just to confirm how the boon would work specifically with a Beastmaster, check this situation out:

I have a Ranger Beastmaster that plays the module and obtains the owlbear boon. When the ranger played the module, he wasn't level 4 yet, he was level 2. Since the module is intended for characters between level 2 to 4, he was able to play it. So does he have the chronicle sheet applied to his character at level 2 and then when level 4 rolls around, the level where he can obtain an animal companion, the boon activates, granting him access to the owlbear.

Is this the correct thought process on how this would work for a character, such as a Ranger Beastmaster, who doesn't get their animal companion right away?

The Exchange

So what do they mean by "normal-sized". Isn't the NORMAL size of a green sting scorpion TINY? I don't think they are considered a tiny "Giant Scorpion", because under the Giant Scorpion description, it specifically states, "Other species of scorpions exist as well, some smaller but most quite a bit larger and favoring different terrains, such as forests, plains, or even underground." Then under this it lists the green sting scorpion as one of the other species found in galorian.

In regards to them being compared to a similar size of a small dog, I would think they would be much smaller than a dog. On the New Familiars description in regards to sizes, it states, "Small-sized familiars are also harder to keep on a master's person than Tiny or smaller familiars. Often they require some form of magic item, like a bag of holding, for such a feat to work." Based on this Tiny familiars are easily kept on it's master, I for one use the familiar satchel to keep my scorpion in. Plus in the green sting's description it says it's pincers are too small to affect anything but insects. So I would say they are much smaller than a dog.

And can someone point out where you can't cast spells on your familiar?

Brf wrote:
But a Green-sting scorpion is not a "normal-sized" scorpion. It is a tiny "Giant Scorpion"

The Exchange

So based on the below quote by blackbloodtroll, I wanted to confirm that you can cast "Giant Vermin" on your familiar. I have a Green Sting Scorpion familiar and as long as we can cast this on our familiar, I also had a couple questions specific to this type of scorpion:

1. The spell states, "You turn a number of normal-sized centipedes, scorpions, or spiders into their giant counterparts." So there are multiple larger types of scorpions out there, so how would I increase it's size based on the spells effects? Would I just use the stats for the Giant Scorpion found here?: http://paizo.com/prd/monsters/scorpion.html

2. The spell also states, "Orders to attack a certain creature when it appears or guard against a particular occurrence are too complex for the vermin to understand." Since the vermin we are casting our spell on is our familiar, does this override the ability and allow us to direct our now giant familiar to attack specific targets? My character is a witch, so I know the primary purpose of my familiar is to store my spells, but if it is necessary, I would want to try and have it attack something to save my life and having it giant provides it with a much better chance to survive.

Quote for Black Blood Troll: Vermin familiars and Vermin animal companions, still count as Vermin, for the purposes of what the master(Druid/Wizard/etc.) can cast upon them.

Okay so I know some things stack and some things don't, so I wanted clarification on if Blade Sense and Dodge work together. I have a Rogue Knife Master with Blade Sense and Dodge. Do they stack?

Blade Sense: While in combat involving light blades blade sense gains you a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made against you with light blades.

Dodge: You gain a +1 dodge bonus to your AC.

I read somewhere that the only bonus that stacks with itself is dodge. Is this correct and if so, can someone point me in the direction in case I need to defend myself when challenged?

USA vs Gana game is almost over! Will we get free rerolls here in the states? Only time will tell, but the score looks positive so far!

The Exchange

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

I am looking at the next rogue talent that I want to get and I am leaning towards the Positioning Attack talent.

Positioning Attacks states: "Once per day, when a rogue with this talent hits a creature with a melee attack, she can move up to 30 feet without provoking attacks of opportunity. The movement must end in a space adjacent to the creature hit with the melee attack."

So just to clarify, can you move to become in base contact with an enemy, conduct the melee attack and then complete the move granted by positioning attack? It didn't say in the description of positioning attack whether or not you could move before completing the melee attack.

In addition to the players success in bypassing misdirection, how does detect magic play into the players identifying Vaga. She is wearing the boots of levitation and the glamoured armor. If the PCs detect magic, won't they identify those items and thing it is weird that a little girl named Tilly is wearing those items? How have other GMs gone around this?

The Exchange

Okay, so I am developing the monsters for my upcoming encounter. One of the monsters have Protection from Good, DR 5/good and they also have Regeneration (good). How do these work together?

So if a Good PC attacks the monster and surpasses the extra AC provided to the monster from Protection of Good and does more damages to the monster than the damage reduction absorbs, then is it not able to regenerate? If the damage reduction absorbs all the damage done by the good PC does the monster still get to regenerate?

The Exchange

Thanks for the clarifications! Makes more sense now.

The Exchange

If your rogue is a knife master, then there are bonuses for using a knife versus a weapon, but even then other weapons are still allowed to be used. You just get d4s on your sneak attack instead of d8s using a knife. That is the only thing I could think of that would argue the use of a none daggerish weapon, but it is more then a disadvantage and not an exclusion. I see no problem with you using a Katana for sneak attacks.

The Exchange

I am interested in developing a Paladin/Cavalier multiclass character that I will be using in the Pathfinder Society. My plan was to have it utilize a wolf as a mount.

When looking at the Cavalier class it states a small character can choose a wolf, "A Small cavalier can select a pony or wolf, but can also select a boar or a dog if he is at least 4th level."

If I started my character as a Paladin, and then at second level decided to add the cavalier, would I gain a free mount, specifically a wolf for it's Mount Class feature? I didn't know how that would work. When looking at the cavalier threads, it said it gets the free mount, but none of the threads I was looking at were related to incorporating the cavalier as a multiclass into an already existing character. I just was a little confused how this mount would appear out of no where.

This will be my first multiclassed character and the other thing I was confused on was how BAB/Saves work when leveling. So for example, I start with my Paladin. At first level he has BAB +1 and +2, +0, +2 for his respective saves. At second level I choose to multiclass to Cavalier. Would I then add the Cavalier's 1st level BAB +1 and +2, +0 , +0 to the Paladin's 1st level stats, resulting in BAB +2 and +4, +0, +0 OR would they just be a wash with each other and utilizing the Paladin's initial 1st level stats of BAB +1 and +2, +0, +2.

As the character progresses, I would choose to use the Paladin's divine bond towards a weapon and ignore the rules for a mount to remove the confusion associated with the mount my character was utilizing.

Also, since this is for the Pathfinder Society, are there specific mount requirements for Pathfinder Society such as obtaining a wolf through a boon or something?
