Sean K Reynolds wrote:
If you can't see a target, you don't have line of *sight* to a target.
I read through this entire thread and I think Sean's comment pretty much sums up the confusion on the entire issue. The comment is totally backward. Everyone knows if you have Line of Sight, you can see the target. If you do not have Line of Sight, you cannot. The problem is we have to take the maps we are using and various other aspects and determine whether there is a line of sight from Character A to Monster B. Is the rough nature of that "line" due to it being a rough surface or a GM who drank too much coffee?
Where a lot of the confusion comes from is wargaming (miniatures on battlemaps as Lilith pointed out). Many good wargames have rules on Line of Sight because everyone want to be able to shoot the guys they don't like but not be shot by them. Wargames are also NOT roleplaying games and arbitrary decisions are discouraged, whereas in roleplaying if they advance the story and everyone's enjoyment can be actively encouraged.
Now, I have been houseruling and making decisions on rules since I started GMing. The best way to handle this, as Lilith ponted out, is on a case by case basis, but it would have been nice to have had a sentence or two mentioning the use of the ubiquitous 5' squares, such as whether you have to go from the center (as I would have almost always thought due to my wargaming background) or any corner, or can I lean over half way into the next square? Can I do that diagonally?

New Planet Stories in March 2010. I just want my fix now. I have not had a new one since Robots Have No Tails in like June, my September Paizo shipment has arrived and still no new Planet Stories. The Ship of Ishtar is listed for October, but that is a month away.
I would not complain if you sneaked a little 1960s 60cent paperback into my subscription box when you are going to go this long. You could even put one of the "abridged" versions so I could appreciate your unabridged versions more when I read them later.
Signed,
A victim of Erik Mona, I will be "forced" to read "The End of the Story" a collected set of fantasies by Clark Ashton Smith tomorrow while riding the bus to and from work and probably for the week after.

So, I have two questions.
1) What would anyone need with SIX 24-sided dice?
2) Is Black, the new Blue, Red, White AND Yellow?
Seriously though, I would be more tempted to buy a set of six different colors, than a tube of one color. Assuming, someone answered question 1 to my satisfaction.
Well, they added red to the images. I still would be more tempted with a tube of six colors. And Jeff, thanks for the response.

Oh, well.
If Planet Stories did a non-subscriber edition of John Carter of Mars, I would love it. I have read the whole series. There is definitely a declining quality as you go from the first few to the last few books, but I notice whenever I look at any of my Burroughs stuff that it is always a selection of editions. It would be nice to have a full set, all with the same publisher and general look.
I would, however, prefer to have my Planet Stories subscription stay out of the "common" stuff and continue to add to great books I have never read (or even perhaps heard of).

First off, blackjack is the only popular casino game, through smart play, you can lower the odds to almost even (and, if you can count a six deck shoe, or have a partner, you can make them better than even). The odds for roulette are abysmal, unless you only play black/red or odd/even, and, frankly, that gets boring quick. Craps, well, is crap, come/don't come - pass/don't pass gets boring, which is why people wind up playing the prop bets.
Gambling has never been about the odds, it's about the human desire to "win big". Casinos don't make multi-billion dollar profits because they care about being "fair", they make those profits because the house always wins in the long run. They play on people's greed, which would be why, just about every time I go to Vegas, I'll see several people WAY ahead lose it back to the house (and then some).
The games at the Gold Goblin aren't any different, frankly, and Riddleport is full of people always looking for the big score.
Actually, while the odds for roulette are abysmal, they are curious on a time-weighted aspect. I had a friend who worked near the Strip in Vegas. Most Fridays, he left and went to a casino and put $15-25 on a single number.
Most weeks, he walked away having lost a small amount of money. However 1-2/year he won $700 or so money and had a really cool weekend.

So I see people asking for spell cards for the new Pathfinder game, which I whole heartedly support. However, please make them much better than the Crit and Fumble decks.
At the last Pathfinder Society game I was looking at a friend's Critical Hit deck, and realized VERY quickly the deck was useless to me. There was so much blank space, and the type was so small I couldn't read any of it! The type could have so easily been larger. For some reason it was decided blank space was more important than reading what the card said!
I know you guys at Paizo are still young pups, but give us old folks a break. IF you make other decks, please use a font size that can actually be read.
I strongly agree with this comment, there is way too much unused space on these cards. I can still read these, but in low-light situations it is not as easy as it should be. The items are great and my players love them, although I suspect it is my enthusiasm in yanking out the deck. When I used a modified Arduin critical system, their enthusiasm was not as great.

There really isn't a rhyme or reason as to why certain shipments get charged GST by customs although technically we should be paying GST on all goods that we order into the country. In any case I have found that as long as I keep shipments below $40.00 customs doesn't seem inteterested in them. Once they pass that total they tend to get flagged and then, as you have mentioned you get to pay their handling fee on top of the GST.
USPS is a lot better than UPS entering the country though. UPS charges you absurd amounts in handling charges for the joy of collecting the money from us for customs.
I agree on the no rhyme or reason. I spent a summer in the mid 1990s working at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory near Victoria BC. I bought a truck right before going up there and the dealership sat around for a month and "forgot" to file the paperwork for the license plates.
I was leaving for Vancouver Island in a week or so (once we figured out why no plates had arrived) and they would not be able to get them to me in time. We had them sent to the observatory. The paperwork clearly stated "Arizona License plate for Arizona Registered Vehicle". Apparently, that is a hot import into Canada because there was a GST that the observatory initially paid. Fortunately, they also knew what paperwork I had to file so they could be reimbursed for an obviously wrong tax.

Looking at what people like the egyptians and romans did, I have no doubts that intelligence hasn't risen over time (at least not in the last two thousand years...100,000 years? Yes, it probably has).
I'm also confident that a game with very bad house odds would get a bad reputation and at the very least suffer from people not wanting to play it.
Following this and what Lilith said earlier, people in historical times are probably as smart as us (+/- nutrition and related issues). Many people discount how efficient empirical learning is. For example, many people (including several science professors I had) thought (or still think) that the reason that glass in medieval church windows is thicker at the bottom is because the glass must have flowed. Whereas, a medieval church builder would notice quickly that when he took a slab of glass that was thicker on one end tended to break when he put the thick part on top. 1000 years later you don't see most of the failures.
However, get-rich-quick schemes still grab many people whether they are some "system" in Vegas, investing with Bernie Madoff, or purchasing lottery tickets. I don't think there will be any lack of people to play games. However, should you force your players to make intelligence or wisdom checks to avoid losing all their money before they can spend it on the new magic item they really wanted.

This is not a complaint aimed at Paizo. The book arrived safely here in Tempe in mid February. I travelled to the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in western AZ the next weekend. I packed it with my stuff along with "The Reavers of Skaith" of which I had 30 or so pages to finish.
I arrived back in Tempe and removed both book and then took Reavers on the bus ride to and from work Monday finishing off a tremendously great series reprinted by Planet Stories.
Well, I wanted to grab "The Outlaw of Mars" on Tuesday and it was GONE!
GONE! I tellya.
I grabbed my general backup book "The Dark Tower Book VII" by King and went to work. I arrived home and looked for A BOOK THAT SHOULD BE ON TOP of ALL the other crap. It has been TWO MONTHS. WHERE IS IT?
I have read several other books in the meantime and "The Sword of Rhiannon (of which I own an abridged version) will be shortly arriving. I don't know if I want to get out of order on Planet Stories.
If anyone has any hints, please give them to me.

A long long time ago ... (oh OK, it was only November), Vic Wertz (whose "new" avatar is not nearly as good as the old one) said that plans on including this in the subs had not been decided. Is there any news on this, or being that release is still 5 months away, is his comment still "official".
And I, but probably not my players are SO waiting for this product.

I recently placed an order for a few items which included the new Pathfinder Dice Set. It is listed on my Account page under preorders as:
Pathfinder Dice Set: Curse of the Crimson Throne , expected January 2009
When I put it in my cart and even now, it no longer lists as preorder.
Two things.
1) Is this what is keeping the rest of my order at pending (and if so, what type of time frame is the wait)?
2) If this is what is slowing it down (and it will be more than a week or so), is there a way that I can "keep my place in line" for the next group that arrives and have it ship with my next regular order?

The best part is that the Lusty Lady is directly across the street from the art museum. I so want them to build a skybridge...
There's also the Déjà Vu, which advertises "50 beautiful women and three ugly ones."
Heh heh ... typical strip bar fare ... 3 ugly girls before you're wasted, 50 beautiful women when you're wasted...
I think you're looking for the bar a few blocks away that used to advertise their "beers on tap" selection as "50 imported beers and 3 American ones."
That could get me to a bar. Although Washington and Oregon have plenty of distinguished taps that would flow through a bar I owned or just occasionally visited.

I believe the shirts are still available on the Paizo store on this very site.
You should have a record of that with your chronicles. If you've lost them check your Pathfinder Society page, the link is fourth down on the left hand side, can't miss it.
I hope my Paizo-fu is worthy. Links to advertised shirts and others

It made play really slow. I have other problems with this as well (it also made dungeon designing difficult) so yeah...
I told my players that, clearly, Paizo wouldn't be so stupid as to not add an Index in the actually published game, but my players pointed out several good examples as to why this just simply couldn't go unmentioned, and so, I now mention to you:
PLEASE have an Index in the actual core rule set; both the Handbook and Bestiary. Oh PLEASE!!!
Thank You.
As someone who has actually compiled indices, I understand how hard they are to create, but a good index makes a good book, GREAT.
I implore you to take Goblins' suggestion.

I am thinking of cutting one into a 24"x20" piece, an 8"x10" piece and a 16"x10" piece. Since you can pre-draw a layout with Sharpie and it won't rub off while the mat is folded up, this would add utility.
My concern is the lamination. Will doing this cause it to peel? Is there something I can do to prevent such a thing from happening- a hot implement to seal up the edge, maybe? Or should I abandon this plan as insanity?
Did you ever try this? Anyone else? I only have one right now so I fear experimenting on my only copy?
Has anyone tried cutting one up and seeing if it stands up? I would be worried about the "lamination" being unconnected at those points. I was close to ordering one for surgical purposes, but they have cut off OT at work.
I took one of the original mats and cut it without problems. The sides are not sealed when the mat is whole. I have only every seen one mat that the laminate failed - the customer left it in a hot car and it stuck to a binder.
As a side note, the mat I tested on had Sharpie on it from Gen Con 2006 or 2005, and it came off with a dry erase marker as was advertised.
Jeff
Well, due to a slight mistake I have ordered a third one of these. This weekend, my group should finish D0 or die trying and I should be able to answer this question from a second opinion.
Yeah, this works surprisngly well, I now have 2 full mats and a 24x20 a 16x10 and and 8x10 piece
There is no initial delamination.
I will now be adding a fourth to cut up. The only complaint I had was from the wife of one of the players who said I should have used a box cutter rather than scissors.

I'm not sure what you mean by this post... what's making them take so long? Combat? Stealth? Scouting? Arguing? Timidity (a.k.a. spending all their spells on the first encounter of the day and then resting)? Depending on what's causing the problem, advancing to the next plot could make the problem worse rather than better.
Timidity is part of it. Some of it is also choosing a group that lacked a healer AND a front line fighter. So, pretty much every combat winds up being whoever the main creature targets taking nearly lethal damage. It also might not be taking quite as long as it seems, we game once every 2 weeks for 4-6 hours. They have cleared out areas 1-10 in the Monastery and it is mid-day on Day 7, but Gurtlkeep escaped through the bolthole so I am also worried about the "final epic level one battle".
This is complicated by the fact that one player (who only showed up for 1 of 3 games) will probably have to die an heroic death and be replaced by someone who wanted into the game since he heard about it, but after we thought we had our full compliment.
Well, everyone was OK for the solution that the "idiot Dwarf Dragon Shaman you swore was with you" is now a cleric with healing abilities. They have successfully moved on to D1. They went East in the tunnels and grouped up with Kerrdemak and have now rescued two of the kids in the Mess Hall and grouped up with Edgrin. Two of Kerdremak's warriors died but he still has 3 and Edgrin has Kimi and Mikra with him. We now have a group of 11 against the rest of the dungeon.
Any advice on how I should handle this? BTW, they have missed Glintaxe and I plan to use him at the beginning of next session as the kids should be very familiar with him.

See this is where you confuse all the Yankies cobber!
Up here in Queen's country a "stubbie" is what we call a 375mL bottle of beer and a "tinnie" is a 375mL can of beer... it actually confuses us because we call a small metal boat "up to 9 or so feet" a "tinnie" as well.
Do they still sell beer in tin cans on the continent which is an island and a country? Here in the States, they switched from tin to aluminum for the Foster's cans (about the only down under beer available here) quite a few years ago and the taste difference was obvious and in my opinion a change in the wrong direction.

Dear. God. Loathe this movie. Maybe because I was working retail and had to sell endless copies of the movie book.
I would definitely have to vote Titanic, it's only redeeming feature for me is that I annoyed countless people by pointing out that the love story in Godzilla was better. And I can't really stand Kate Winslet. And as far as Leo whenever I see him in a movie, I remember watching "The Man with the Iron Mask" with my girlfriend when she asked during one scene where he was making out "Who is who?, they both look like girls."

Well, that sounds good to me. When Ohio State is here, I tend to get a lot more alcohol bought for me when the Buckeye fans take over my local bar. I didn't pay for a week when Ohio State won the National Championship a few years ago. Every time I was out, I either got comp'ed as a regular or one of the 150 people in a bar that normally has 20 or so had it charged to their tab.
The few Boise State fans I saw here two years ago seemed shell shocked at going to the big city.
And simply put, this is the reason that the mid-majors don't get invited to big bowls and there will not soon be a 16-team or so playoff.
But the Boise State/Oklahoma game was still great.
