About Zhiden Enack

Background:

Zhiden Enack is, first and foremost, an escaped slave. He was kept as a servant for a scion of House Sarini. His job was to do what he was told, whether that was preparing the dinner table to their specifications or stealing some worthless trinket from a neighbor. The one thing that all his tasks had in common was the catch, some bit of instruction that was a test for Zhiden, and the punishment for failure was only slightly worse than the abuse he'd be subjected to on success. One day, Professor Lorrimor came to Cheliax on an expedition and Zhiden's master, owing the Professor a favor, offered him Zhiden's services on the trip. Lorrimor was impressed enough with Zhiden's loyalty and competence that he offereed to buy Zhiden's freedom, in return for a favor down the line. Zhiden agreed, not really expecting to be given freedom but believing that Lorrimor would be a better master than the one he had. Sadly, Zhiden's master wasn't willing to sell, especially when he learned that the Halfling would be granted freedom, so Lorrimor, true to his word, helped Zhiden escape instead.

After his escape, Zhiden begged Lorrimor to take him on as a servant, but he was told that he was rejected, told that he shouldn't be so quick to throw away his newfound freedom. Since then, he has wandered the lands north of Cheliax, afraid that if he ventures too close, or if he stops moving, he will be recaptured by his master's men. He worries that caravan work would be too official, and that he lacks too many proofs of his identity for that to be a good idea, and other work for a travelling halfling are hard to come by, so he has resorted to burglary to get by. He doesn't know how the messenger found him, but he was disheartened by the news that his savior had died without the debt repayed. He immediately began heading for Ustalov when he recieved the news, wondering how or why he would be mentioned in a will.
