I would like to formally request to cancel my subscription. Is this the only method to accomplish this? I find no such option under my account settings.

Thanks

My wife and I are also in the same boat of people who the sign up button says we have a seat but does not show in the list and our friend who we are traveling with have both the sign-up button and shown on his list.

Has an official response to what appears to be an error in the price been posted someplace? If yes, I apologize and am not finding it when I do a search.

So, based on the pure text, no, you would not gain any benefit.

True that the ifrit ability specifically calls for sorcerer levels, but the Blood Arcanist explicitly says to treat Arcanist levels as Sorcerer levels.

More strongly, the Bloodline Development Exploit literally says as though she were a 1st-level sorcerer.

So as strict ruling there's still the possibility those options apply as they mention sorcerer levels instead of Bloodragers and Eldritch Scions that only mention Bloodlines

OK so you're seeing the same thing that I am that because it mentions treating the Arcanist level as Sorcerer levels, this is effectively saying I am a sorcerer and thus aught to receive the bonus. I can probably expect table variation for GM ruling with PFS on this. Again for anyone that wants to chime in. Taking a leap that *IF* there were an official ruling that said an Ifret Arcanist as above does receive the benefits as outlined... is it worth it for the increased effective CHA bonus giving up three exploits from 1st, 3rd and probably 9th levels (given PFS play goes to around 11th level). This leaves the character two exploits to choose from over the course of its life.

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate. 1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm debating on building an Ifrit Arcanist because it seems like it could be a good mix on the surface. These are my thoughts:

If I take Blood Archanist archetype and thus select elemental (Fire) bloodline, does this give the same benefit as it would to the vanilla Ifrit Sorcerer? The benifit being receiving an effective +2 bonus to CHA?

Same question applies when not taking the archetype but instead the bloodline development exploit for elemental (Fire)

Answers aside to the questions above, overall, what is anyone's opinion on an Ifrit Arcanist as a potential build?

Also adding my congratulations. Excellent work Cap'n Dom with a hardy ARRR!!!

For the events that closed with space still available in them, from what I remember last year, there was a board with "tickets" available to register/trade. Is that still the mechanism being used this year? If Yes, at what point will that be setup? I.E. after 8 o'clock Friday during registration. Is there another way to register/trade. My wife flipped the script on me after registration closed. She wants to get into the Sands III on Sunday which shows two spots open with a character which "should" qualify for exp after she plays Sands II Saturday. Original plan the one that has already played Sands I wouldn't have enough exp to be level 3, but now due to local play she didn't anticipate it could after completing the Sands II.

Just my two cents:
While the system isn't perfect, it is designed to get a broad spectrum pulse on what is the (probable) best fit for a given table. I do not think that there could be an all encompassing system short of a lengthy manual reference guide identical to the US tax table that list every possible variation of legal table size with a subtier next to it. There are also multiple factors to consider such as the total number of players (3 + NPC, vs minimum 4 vs standard 6 vs the should be rare 7). The actual character class dynamic - by the numbers you can prove anything but you give me a table with the highest character (or characters) be a magic slinging type, it is going to be more powerful than another variant of the identical APL or TPL. In my eyes APL is mathematically the most economical solution in determining what tier to play.

With APL - you are comparing oranges to oranges to determine the tier. By this I mean a number that looks like a number identical to the level of the participants level AND looks like a number that is identical to the subtier number.
With TPL - your comparing tangelos to oranges - they're related and they have the similar sorta flavor but not exactly alike. It is my opinion that it seems to add a level of complexity that isn't necessary. I'd also not like to rules lawyer the system to death - in such a way that you have to pay attention to every little factor and subscribe to as Kyle has already said of letting the table determine the subtier when necessary.

The game is meant to "provide an even, balanced experience to all players." This includes the GM - so lets not make determining the appropriate subtier to play an exercise in mathematics. Use APL for what it is - an AVERAGE. When in doubt, talk to your players and let them decide what they want to get into. If you are concerned about bullying then perhaps (just perhaps) you aren't really paying attention to the needs of your players and being the best GM you could be (before the game starts, or while playing the scenario).

FWIW, Chris - I don't know if this will help in fixing the problem. The issue may also result from retired scenarios no longer legal for play. I.E First Steps 2 & 3 or some of the Season 0 things.

From what I have seen in the past, there is usually enough time to get to your next table without an issue with even time for a quick restroom break - though there will probably be a line. Not really enough time to walk back to your room, and use your own unless you are a quick walker. Still, you could show to your table to check in with the GM, and then go as well which saves your seat.

My opinion - for whatever it is worth - I am not in favor of a ruling for consumables (pre-purchased and on a character sheet) to be reimbursed by the rest of the party. Having the forethought to purchase a consumable during the course of a scenario and it being used and thus split the cost is acceptable.

Having a consumable which is pre-purchased be reimbursed essentially breaks the definition of what a consumable is. A one time use thing purchased by a single player. It would be abused to the point that a character could effectively pay for an item once at a set cost (buying a permanent weapon if you will) and be able to use it in perpetuity but having others pay for it then on (renting your weapon). If we are going that route, then why haven't we created a rule to start a recycling program on Goralon for all the empty potion bottles, vials, and scroll. "I used your nice potion of Fly that I bought from your stall last week, I'd like my 5 copper pieces back for recycling."

If you want to have free replacement of consumables, use the ones printed on the chronicle sheet that are found during the course of the scenario. If something is required for the success of the mission, it is generally found on the chronicle sheet. Anything beyond that just makes it "easier" but I wouldn't classify as required.

Too much to hope for to get a 30 minute pause during the Friday Night Special so some Goblins might be able to run outside to the hotel parking lot and see if we can catch some fireworks in the distance... or perhaps light some of their own fireworks? Goblins and fireworks. What could go wrong in the hotel parking lot?

It may not be feasible for them, because of contracts and setup times... effectively they would have to rent their biggest room another whole day in advance of the event and they are already probably having to do that for the {Insert name of the room that held the store last year} to warehouse supplies for all the other rooms the following days.

PFS Convention gming would Im guessing be the hardest experience a PFS GM will ever encounter.

Yes, I would agree. While I have yet to do so, (GM at a convention) I do mentally audit the GM as he is doing his stuff when I play. I can't help it. If the GM does something I like, I want to emulate it myself. If the GM does something I don't like, I remember it to not repeat it on others. When you've been on the other side of the screen, you can tell when a GM is under prepared. I then try and help the GM out as best as I can to help him/her have a good GMing experience. GM'ing other players helps being a better player in return to GM's.

Matthew Pittard wrote:
Firstly you are going to get players with probably vastly different levels of games and world knowledge.

That isn't exclusive to Convention play, you can find that at Game Shop and Home Play just as much. It just seems a higher concentration or a higher probability because there is more players at the convention.

Matthew Pittard wrote:

Uh, this is a double edged sword. Again, you may see this and feel it is the norm for Convention play because... as previously stated there is a higher concentration of overall players. If they don't play well with others, it is a result that they may be at the convention, because they don't play well with others as they can't have a consistent home game experience, resulting from not being able to play well with others. The vicious cycle. My experience with Convention play, kind and courteous players eager to enjoy the game.

I haven't GM'd a lot of PFS official games but I have GM'd over the last 7 years - perhaps more. I'd have to sit down and think how old my oldest campaign is. But, I am up to 5 official tables so far.

My 2 cents,
PFS CONVENTION gaming is going to be different than PFS Game shop is going to be different than PFS Home Game. Tailor your GM style to your players and the environment the game is at. I'll get back to that but I'll go through your list first.

Re: 1) - Being a GM, you aren't expected to know everything or be an encyclopedia. Unless it is a mechanics on the game questions, the player is going to be the expert on their character anyway. So being a GM, your job is to ONE - make sure everyone is having fun within the rules and TWO - make judgement calls that are fair to all involved. It is acceptable to ask to see documentation (and have the player spend the time to get it for you) on something you aren't familiar with and a good thing to do before the game starts so you know what kind of characters you will be GM'g for so you as the GM aren't surprised.

Re: 2) - As another has said, that is common courtesy. There are side conversations and then their are non-constructive side conversations. My general reaction is to just stop talking and look at the individual until they put the phone away or stop the non-constructive side conversation (if it were a home game). That gets the point across that also, as the GM, I'm in charge of the situation. This is where your environment can come into play. If you are at a convention, it is noisy already with limited time - I would move on because the time constraint is a bigger issue than the rudeness.

Re: 3)- Meh, that is a slippery slope. Because that demands that everyone RP on the same level. Some people don't RP a different character and play the game as if they were the character (an avatar). You're essentially saying to those people, they are playing the game wrong and diminishing their enjoyment. Now, there is metagaming and then there is METAGAMING. Again, this is a situation where the GM has to play to the audience he/she has. Be mindful of other peoples enjoyments. This mentality of the GM using the level of metagaming against the level of a player using metagaming can also promote the "GM" vs "Players" game. No, just no - and it happens a lot at conventions where the GM tries to play against PC's in the attempt to kill them. That isn't the spirit of the game.

Re: 4) - This job (I feel) can't be offloaded to the players. Yes, they should be aware but it is still the GM's job to keep the pace and flow of the combat. Here is a tip to help you that I saw at last years PiazoCon. Get little index cards and cut them into strips about an inch wide and maybe about two inches long or more. Fold them in half length wise so it becomes a 1 inch wide tent. Have each player write their character name on both sides. Hang them in combat order on your GM screen so both you and the players can see the combat order (including ones for monsters/npc's). As combat progresses move the tent card from front to back. This lets the players visually know who is coming up next so they can preplan their initiative actions.

Re: 5) - We're human. It happens. But it isn't the GM's responsibility to manage characters' bonuses. They give you a number, if they miss a bonus, I may or may not remind them depending on circumstances and how battle is going. I see lots of people pull out tablets and load HeroLab character sheets to help keep track of the additional bonus by turning things on and off. It helps.

Re: 6) - See answer 5.

Re: 7) - I'm not really seeing how having predetermined rolls aids in prevention of metagaming. (For perception) You still describe what the character or characters see (or dont describe on a fail) based upon a roll either predetermined or at the moment. Now I can see where it could speed up game play in general by knowing ahead of time what to tell the players and transition into combat (get predetermined initiative orders for the combats) - but that is work you are putting on yourself to keep track of.

So tailoring your GM style to the players and the environment, is going to depend on if you've played with these people before, where it is happening, are their predetermined expectations etc. For game shop and con, having a "speech" before the game is great but I wouldn't so much proclaim them as such edicts or laws. My suggestion to you is to do some more home game GM'ing (which you can still do as PFS scenarios) to get being the GM under your belt. Have the safety net of familiarity of player expectations with people you know first as a GM, and then progress (if you like and want more challenges) to game shop with unknown quantity players and then convention.

I'd also recommend looking at the information listed in the GM101 and GM201 documents on Paizo's website. If you have the opportunity to go to a seminar for GM101/201 at PiazoCon or other convention I highly recommend them. It is interactive with round table timed situations to help GM's be better GM's and deal with things the best way possible with constructive feedback from a panel as well as the audience.

Yea there it is. I knew I saw that explanation someplace. I feel like I have to read these rules every time I GM to remind myself what I'm supposed to do.

So what remains is still determining an official ruling on GM credit for OoST available items - based upon table GM'd or GM Character level applied to. In my case above (post 1) it is cut and dry as it is both the same. It may not always be.

It is written in the document someplace to the effect that as GM's we aren't risking our characters as such so we don't expend resources as a normal player would. Therefore along with the same theme I put forth "Take the APL of a party of one, being the GM character who must always play down if necessary to determine subtier items available on a chronicle sheet." This seems fair to me from both the player and GM perspective.

This also seems supported by:

GTPSOP pg 37 wrote:
The subtier for which a GM’s character receives credit depends on the character’s level. If a GM with a 1st-level rogue runs a Tier 1–5 scenario using Subtier 1–2, she takes a Subtier 1–2 Chronicle sheet for her 1st-level rogue. If she instead runs a Tier 1–5 scenario using Subtier 4–5, she still takes a Subtier 1–2 Chronicle sheet, as her PC clearly falls within the lower subtier.

Take the lowest possible subtier based upon the character level. For a Tier 1-5 a L3 should take 1-2. That verbiage should probably be cleaned up a bit to make it more clear for OoST levels.

Thanks everyone for clarifications. I'm all about common sense. What I have gathered from what everyone has said that the unofficial "official consensus" is: GM ITEM LOOT is determined by subtier the GM character chronicle sheet being applied to would have been if GM character had played at any table. From my post one of this thread, that would be subtier 1-2 for a 3rd level character. I'm good with that. (For GM credit, in essence you take the APL of a party of one, being the GM character who must always play down if necessary)

If I GM'd a session that was a Tier 5-9 and the table played at subtier 8-9; and attempted to apply this GM credit to a 3rd level character it's technically held in reserve until the character becomes an appropriately leveled minimum 5th level character, and GOLD and LOOT would be at the subtier 5-6 reward, regardless that the tabled played at subtier 8-9.

Now, assuming that the previous paragraph is accurate (and I'm sorry if this seems like its needed to be beaten into the skull), would it not behoove my character to continue to hold onto the sheet until it reached level 8 before applying the sheet to have more gold and better loot; and could one also do such? Or, am stuck in the paradox that I have a level appropriate character and therefor must apply it.

You are correct.

Yes, you are correct to my meaning of out-of-subtier gold and access to the items listed for Subtier 1-2 but not 4-5.

Even I as the GM do not get access to the 4-5 items, also correct?

Still new to this, I only have 4 tables of credit so far and this is the first time Out-of Subtier has affected a player and myself:

GTPSOP pg 35 said wrote:
Step 5: Determine the Max Gold for the scenario based on the PC’s advancement rate and the subtier played. Circle the applicable value (F). If the PC’s level is not within the subtier played (such as a 1st-, 2nd-, or 3rd-level character in Subtier 4–5), circle the Out-of-Subtier gold value or calculate the Out-of-Subtier value for Seasons 0–4 by taking the average of both subtiers and rounding down. Write this value beside area F and circle it. This value represents the total gold piece value a character may receive for defeating all enemies and finding all treasure in a scenario.

Table consists of a Lvl 1, 2, 3, & 1 so APL = 1.75 = Sub-Tier 1-2

Sub-Tier 1-2 session played on a Season 3 Scenario

Level 1, 2 & 1 player gets the Sub-Tier 1-2 Loot and gold
Level 3 player gets the Sub-Tier 1-2 Loot and Out-of-Level gold (which needs to be calculated by taking the average of Sub-Tier 1-2 and Sub-Tier 4-5 because this is a Season 3 Scenario which doesn't list it on the sheet)

GTPSOP pg 37 said wrote:
Should a GM receive a Chronicle sheet that indicates her character is between subtiers (for example, if she runs a Tier 1–5 scenario but gives a 3rd-level character the Chronicle sheet), she must always receive the Out-of-Subtier gold value. This rule is meant to balance the fact that the GM’s character doesn’t have to expend any resources or risk death while gaining a Chronicle sheet for running a scenario.

GM credit applied to a level 3 character gets the Sub-Tier 1-2 Loot and Out-of-Level gold

I'm looking for verification on the Player Level 3 rewards for gold getting the Out-of-Level gold value - since level 3 is not within the subtier played. It stands to reason that the GM's gold and the Level 3 players gold would be identical if they are the same level.

Am I good on this?

We (wife and I) haven't quite determined what our pre or post con activities will involve. It may all depend on transportation too. We do have our transit tickets from last year.
