Reins of the Horse Lords
Aura: moderate transmutation; CL: 10th
Slot: Head (animal); Price: 50,400gp; Weight: 1 lb.
Description:
The unforgiving frozen north is the domain of the Horse Lords. These men ride the untamed arctic wilds on powerful, majestic horses that they have personally bred and bonded with in both mind and in spirit.
While the reins are equipped to an animal, of any kind, the rider can shout a command word as a standard action and he and his mount will grow one size category larger as per the spells Enlarge Person and Animal Growth respectively for 10 minutes.
The reins can affect up to four additional humanoids and four additional animals. No two affected creatures can be more than 30 ft apart and all affected creatures must spend a standard action on their turn to join in on the battle roar of the one activating the reins or the spell will not affect them.
Construction:
Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item, Animal Growth, Enlarge Person, Mass; Skill Check Required: Spellcraft or Craft (leather working) DC 15; Cost: 25,200gp, 2016xp
I know I capitalized the spells and I apologize. Is there anything else I did wrong?

That's better. ;-)
I was afraid when I wrote that I was going to be a victim of equivocation.
When I said "may the best MAN win," I meant may the best PERSON win, not may best MALE. I apologize for any confusion.

Thank you Paizo for having this contest.
Thank you Wolfgang Baur, Clark Peterson, and Sean K Reynolds for being fair, and excellent judges.
Thank you wondrous items for being so fan to create.
And thank you to Red Bull, Vault, Monster, and any other energy drink.

Here are some more things we are seeing:
I dont remember where I am with numbers so I am pickign up at 20 :)
20. Sleep/dream items.
21. Riding and/or bit/bridle/saddle items that help the mount and/or rider.
22. Soul draining with healing items.
23. Banners or standards or things that help leaders command in combat.
Not sure why we are seeing so many of these. At least three of the four categories had at least one item that we felt was much better than the others of the same kind. Nothing inherently bad with these four item types. Sleep/dream items are not the most sexy items, however, and if recall correctly that was the category that didnt have a real standout.
Last year it was augury items, coin items, camping items, etc. Not sure why it changes year to year. :)
These won't outright disqualify us will it?

Well, I've hit three of the things on the list so far. Dang.
And at the risk of sounding like I'm belittling people, I'm seeing a lot of "alot"s in this thread. :D
Hold on let me check....
Yes, I did submit a wondrous item, so I'm not an idiot that can't follow directions that corrects people's typing :D

Yeah, I just did a quick breakdown.
Pitfalls:
1. Item Formatting
2. Spell Name Formatting
3. Bad Mechanics
8. Not A Wondrous Item
9. Bad English
12. Home Campaign Item
13. Abusable (Abusive?) Items
16. Adventure-Specific Items
Cliches:
4. Backstory
5. Coins
6. Gateway Chalks
7. Gonzo Items
10. Channeling Items
11. Spell In A Box
14. Beast Shape Items
15. Soul Trapping Items
I think I managed to leap over all the pit falls, but I landed in two cliches in the process (still not sure what a Gonzo Item is). I had a back story one who first USED it, and it may be considered a spell in a can. That's right! I needed more words! I wasn't happy with 155!
Hopefully I pulled it off where it's cool enough that this silly little spell can with a backstory can scratch the top 32 :D

I had my item ready to go, and what got me paranoid was I decided to venture forth and use the word "affect" multiple times.
Of course, being an English Major, I remembered being tripped up by the classic "affect" vs. "effect" conundrum. I think this drove me mad more then anything; having a decent item I made this year, and it may have been thrown out just because of one stupid vowel!
Last year, my item wasn't that powerful. This year I upped the caster level, cause I noticed a lot of the magic items last year were pretty powerful. And, this item is very different for a wondrous item. I never saw anything like it before anywhere, and I'm hoping to get into the top 32.
Here's hoping...
Edit: I even misspelled a word in this post. Some English Major I'll be.

Does this help?
Very nice.

by the way has anybody created a virtue version of this runes?
Can we assume that the rune for the heavenly virtue COULD also be the rune to its corresponding deadly sin? That was kind of the Quink's philosophy on the subject that most people got the sihedron rune wrong.

I have a question about a judgement call I had to do. In book #1 of Rise of the Runelords.
Two questions:
1) Was it a good idea to allow this?
2) What would be the market price of those vial of wrath?

I have a real fun group.
Gremio, Tiefling Paladin of Sarenrae from Riddleport. Always seen with a straw hat to hide his outlandish eyes that give away his heritage. He started off with a claymore with a negative Thassilonian rune on it.
Slobad Rattail, Were-rat Goblin Outcast. A genius among goblins, which isn't saying much really. He was chased out of the Birdcruncher tribe for learning how to read and write (as well as his ability to turn into a were-rat). He has a fondness for music and currently follows Gremio who converted him to worship Sarenrae. Slobad plans on taking over the goblin tribes and rule over them.
Leacian, Elven Ranger. A silent and nimble hunter, he traveled to Sandpoint escorting a noble by the name of Adren Foxglove to the Swallowtail Festivel. After his charge was done, he decided to stay and maybe talk to the locals about the hunting in the Hinderlands.
Krusnuc (cross-nook), Shontai Sorcerer. A resilient that hailed from the Axe clan. When his sorcerer powers manifested the elders took them as a sign that he was a demon child and banished him to the wilderness. With the call of magic his only friend, he surrendered to its call and became a sorcerer. His travels brought him to Sandpoint, where he decided to get a drink of ale. Much to his delight, there was free drinks at the Sallowtail Festivel.
Theodore of Gai, Reformed Cleric of the Divine Winds. Ted hardly payed much attention to his father's teaching of becoming a cleric. With his beliefs in the Gods and Goddesses as frauds he instead turned his studies to the local girls then his studies. As punishment, Ted's father sent him to Sandpoint to assist the consecration with the Sandpoint Cathedral. He is still working his personal philosophy and prays that he will find clarity someday.
