Background

Spoiler:
During a sea battle with Norgard Raiders, the Cailim’s navy vessel Crown’s Defender rescued several slaves while the Norgard vessel sunk to the depths of the Argos. One of these slaves was a Human female with a swollen belly. She was dressed in rags and had a slavers wooden half-token attached to a rope around her neck. The half-token, a symbol of slavery, identifies slaves and their slave masters. Wooden tokens are inlaid with the slaver’s personal crest then split in two. One half, the left side, is forced around the neck of the slave while the other half, the right side, is added to the slaver‘s collection. This woman was wearing the left side of the token.

Two days later the slave woman gave birth but did not survive the labor. The male child was not human, sharing blood with the Norgard. The Captain was tempted to put the child down, believing that no good could come from this life. The ship’s First Mate, a Half-Elf named Almira Jumanah, discussed the matter with the Captain privately and advocated for the life of the child. Four days later the Crown’s Defender arrived in the nearest port, the town of Bidikah. There the first mate met with a Gnome friend who ran a small orphanage. The Gnome, Zayna Tarub, decided she would care for the young infant Half-Orc.

The Half-Orc was given the name Yrar-Kynlas. Yrar, a prevalent Orc name, and Kynlas, a surname associated with abandoned children, seemed appropriate to the keen Gnome caretaker. Yrar spent the first ten years of his life with Zayna. During those first ten years, Yrar was taught the Common language, though, like most commoners, never learned how to read or write the language. These first ten years were a happy time for the Half-Orc. Zayna showed him love and, when needed, discipline. Yrar grew fond of the Gnomes that he grew up with.

On his tenth birthday, the Gnome gave Yrar the half-token that belonged to his mother. Zayna kept it these past ten years until Yrar was old enough to understand the meaning behind the token. She ingrained in him the importance of freedom and told him to keep the token as a constant reminder of the evil and tyranny in the world.

By now, the ten year old Yrar was outgrowing his living arrangements at the Gnome orphanage. Zayna helped him earn a commission out at sea, and on one Spring morning, the Crown's Defender docked in port. The ship's Captain, Almira Jumanah, previous First Mate and successor to the previous Captain, who was killed in battle, greeted Yrar and welcomed him to the crew. Yrar became a dedicated deckhand. A strong work ethic ingrained in him by Zayna, gave him a good reputation on the ship.

Five years of working hard out at sea, provided him with sufficient sailing knowledge to complete his tasks. He also learned of Krakis, The Seamaster and how any sailor should respect his domain. During these years, Yrar grew substantially, towering over many of the crew. He turned into a big, strong adult Half-Orc and took on more responsibility. Yrar found that he loved the sea. The constant rolling, the sunrises and sunsets always open on the horizon pending cloud cover, and the fresh salty air truly appealed to him.

Because of his hard work and dedication, the Captain awarded him several commendations, and Yrar became very fond of the Half-Elf. Along with his regular duties, Yrar was also taught basic fighting techniques because of the volatile peace on the Argos. On several occasions, they were useful as he was called upon to help defend the ship against the Norgard.

Then on one military occasion his life changed once again. The Crown's Defender came under attack of the Raiders. Several of their dark drakkar assaulted the Cailim's vessel. The Crown’s Defender was overmatched, and the crew were either slaughtered or enslaved. Yrar, being of Orc blood, was taken captive but proving loyal to the slain Captain was also enslaved. After stripping Yrar down to issue an initial beating, the slavers found his mother’s half-token around his neck. They just laughed and added another. “They can fight about you when they meet,” the Orc with the whip said, as he began the lesson in subservience.

For countless months, Yrar worked on deck, earning callused hands and even stronger arms from rowing, while also receiving whippings and scars from not rowing fast enough. Yrar’s friendly personality became dark and disturbed. For the first time in his life, he felt hate. After receiving one such nasty beating, Yrar lashed out and broke the neck of a Norgard Orc, instantly killing the raider. Instead of throwing the Half-Orc overboard though, the harsh Orc Captain, Jolgeir Zstokk, had other plans. After witnessing the devastation that Yrar could cause to a living creature, the harsh sea master laughed and shouted an order in Orc. The ship changed directions and the crew shouted their approval.

Forced back to his duties, Yrar waited with anxiety for what was coming next. The drakkar eventually docked into a port far to the north. This port was a pirate hideaway, and Yrar was brought to land. Taken to an arena, Yrar was forced to fight to the death in gladiatorial combat. He was the victor.

Port after port, Yrar sunk deeper into himself while fighting in the arena. He hated the prospect of killing or being killed, but while in combat, he would unleash his rage and fury on his opponents. For months, Yrar would enter a new port, kill, and earn a victory. He became a fan favorite in the northern pirate ports. They called him Nagelfar, and for how much the pirates loved him, he hated them. During these months with the constant chatter in the Orc language, Yrar was able to pick up a working knowledge of the harsh tongue. He deciphered that his arena name, Nagelfar, meant ‘The Ship That Carries The Dead’ . He accepted this translation, while he plotted his escape and revenge.

At another port, Yrar found himself once again in an arena. It was dark. The torch light provided only enough illumination for the small fighting pit and a glimpse of the spectators in the first row. Something was different. Something was wrong. Usually his vision allowed him to see deep within the audience no matter how dark it was, but not this night. This night it was dark, and the fighting pit seemed quieter, as if the crowd’s cheers were being muffled. One man in the first row stood out from the rest though. He was familiar. A slaver of a previously defeated slave. Yrar looked up at the slaver and a menacing smile was returned. Then his opponent entered the pit. Jeers were shouted at the cloaked opponent, but the combatant did not falter. The cloaked figure just stood there waiting. Yrar’s vision was unable to penetrate the mask of darkness that veiled his opponents face. Then the combat horn blew telling the gladiators to begin. The hooded man walked right up to Yrar. This confused the Half-Orc. Usually he and his opponents would circle each other, measuring each other’s capabilities, and checking for weaknesses. This combatant was different. It all happened so fast. The opponent walked right up to Yrar, and through its cloak produced a dark and wispy, skeletal hand. One touch brought the powerful Half-Orc to his knees and then flat out on the ground of the dirty pit. His mind went black and he knew no more.

Eventually, Yrar woke and he felt the rolling of the sea below the wooden boards where he lay. Opening his eyes, he discerned that the cold darkness he now existed in was the cargo hold below the main deck of the drakkar that was his home these past months. He was weak and tired, and much time passed until his strength returned. Although the power that he used to wield seemed lost. He barely saw his Norgard slavers except for when they brought him food. They allowed him much sleep and rest, but while in the cargo hold, Yrar was unable to keep track of where on the Argos he traveled. He just always assumed that his next destination was another port where another fight awaited him.

Then, on one day, the drakkar shook and a hole burst into its side of the cargo hold. The Norgard were under attack. Trapped below deck, Yrar watched the hold fill with saltwater and thought of salvation. He now had an escape route and from several days of rest, he felt strength pore into his muscles. The Half-Orc had to time it right. He had to hold his breath, allow the water inside the hull to stabilize with the surrounding sea, then exit the punctured hull and make it to the surface.

Fresh air entered his lungs once he cleared the surface. Looking around, Yrar found that the drakkar and the attacking vessel were pulling away from him. The Half-Orc was now alone in the sea, but he was free. Finding a piece of floating debris, he let the current take him. He prayed to Krakis for salvation, and to the Half-Orc's surprise, his prayers were answered with the sight of land on the horizon. Yrar swam and washed up on shore. Exhausted, he fell asleep on the beach.

Waking up to a setting sun, Yrar heard cries for help in the distance. Standing up to investigate, the Half-Orc followed the sounds along the sand until he came across an Elven couple being harassed by Norgard raiders. He recognized these Norgard as members of the crew on the drakkar that he was imprisoned on. Once again, a rage like no other filled his blood. Moments later, the Elven couple were staring at him while the Norgard lay dead at his feet.

After several moments of uneasiness, introductions were made and gratitude was given. Yrar explained his situation and the Elves took him to their settlement located in the nearby forest. Although Yrar was not accepted and permitted to stay with the Elves because of his heritage, he was thanked and then taught how to survive in the surrounding jungle. With the aid of the Elves, Yrar learned how to find food and water, build shelter, watch out for dangers, and survive in his new environment.

Yrar took to the jungle just like he took to the sea those many years ago. He loved the freedom and the fresh air. As time moved on and Yrar familiarized himself with the landscape, he started exploring further into the tangled web of trees. Eventually he came to a city on the east shore and recognized it as his childhood home. These past months he spent learning to survive in the jungle unaware that civilization existed along shore far from where he initially washed up. By this time though, Yrar enjoyed his new life and turned away from his former home. He continued to explore Vinggor, learning trails, routes, and places along the way.

During this period of exploration, Yrar found hidden coves where pirates and Norgard would come ashore to conduct business. The main business was the buying and selling of slaves. This enraged the Half-Orc, but he was smart enough to know that the odds were against him. For months while witnessing the actions in the pirate coves, he started to formulate some plans to hinder and hopefully stop and destroy the slave traders.

Part one of Yrar’s plan was to keep an eye on the shores around Vinggor. Sometimes a small boat of slavers would come to shore in an attempt to raid a small fishing village. Yrar would then strike fast and hard, showing the raiders no mercy while protecting the village. By stopping these raids, Yrar claimed ownership of a good piece of leather armor and several weapons. Another part of his plan was to hire himself on as a mercenary guide through the jungle, acting as part of a caravan between Bidikah and Musaal. Yrar’s goals on these caravans were to earn gold to potentially buy slaves that he would eventually free and listen in on information regarding new pirate coves. He figured that if he could not rescue slaves through force, then he would rescue slaves through coin.

Currently, Yrar is saving up his coin and was on route to a slave auction when a Gnome washed up on shore. Several raiders followed in pursuit of the Gnome. Yrar was able to dispatch the raiding party but was severely wounded during the combat. Then the Gnome came to his rescue with healing magic. After introductions, Yrar agreed to accompany the Gnome to the Village of Musaal to meet up with a cousin.

The raiders’ new slave cove will have to wait . . .

Description

Spoiler:
Yrar-Kynlas is large even by Half-Orc standards. Standing 6’6” and weighing 370 lbs., Yrar is mostly muscle. His dark green skin is almost a dull black from years at sea under an unforgiving sun. The whip scars across his back and decorating his heavily muscled arms tell of a tortured life. His chin-length dark black hair intermingles with a wild beard that sprawls down to his chest. His facial hair, along with his rutted forehead, form a cave for his dark, sunken eyes.

Personality

Spoiler:
Yrar loves the sea and the forest. He enjoys the fresh air that fills his lungs. He loves the view of mountains, trees, ocean, and especially, the sun. To him, this is freedom. He is a very independent individual. Yrar believes that his type of freedom should be experienced by all. Yrar loves revelry and merrymaking when the time is right, but he also believes in having a goal in life. He firmly believes that there is honor in protecting the weak and making sure that everyone has a chance to experience the things that he finds joyful in life. What he does not understand though, is that not all will find his form of freedom favorable. None the less though, he stands for freedom, and he is the enemy of tyranny and slavery.
