Background

Spoiler:

Yarag grew up surrounded by wealth and all its trappings. Servants and tutors. All chosen to let the boy know his duty to his family and the House. The politics was always found at the dinner table, the doings of the Ten Houses, the Church and the Military, the 2 Emperors, sat next to the several courses and fine wine.

The emnity with the old foes, House Khatru, by the House leader Verrana Rau was a great source of conversation. Their boorish and arrogant antics made the grown-ups laugh but to a hungry lad, the food was far more important.

The only cloud in this idyllic lifestyle was Gordon. Gordon Rau was of a similar age and delighted in tormenting and bullying the little lad. He brought in friends to help when Yarag started to sprout and grow strong and quick. His whispering campaign and hatred only seemed to increase as time passed and Yarag flourished into manhood.

Eventually Yarag's schooling drew to a close and the family sat him down to decide his future, they wanted him to enter the Church but he convinced them that his true forte would be the Military. Soon after a place in the Imperial Guard as a cadet was his. He found himself in a cadre of budding soldiers all from the best and wealthiest families. Soon cliques and gangs formed along the lines of House politics. The perceptive but small Talefir Nagel saw a ready bodyguard in Yarag and so it proved. The pair's friendship and dislike of the dumb House Khatru and cold House Sadar cadets grew with each scrape and subsequent punishment. They were known as "the Sweat and the Wizard". The best cadet was unfortunately Zervin Sadar and he made the pair's final year a misery, in fact but for the help of Talefir, it is unlikely that Yarag would have lasted despite his skill with a quarterstaff.

Yarag was a powerful opponent with the staff, only he could wield it with such devastation but that just caused him more aggravation from the rest of the sword wielding cadets, even when he had knocked them down.

Towards the end of the course each cadet took part in basic patrols around the edge of the Necropolis. The Major Famovar Khatru put Yarag and Talefir together in a small patrol to investigate forbidden entry into a specific set of mausoleums. At night. Without an experienced sergeant.

Yarag remembers seeing the garish and pointed crennelations of the first tomb, with its gilded gates glittering in the moonlight. He also can describe the voice he heard, then it all went black, and the last thing saw were the stairs he fell down accompanied by the dying screams of his patrol.

Two days later he woke, he had survived by a lucky fall into cover, but his patrol were all dead, ripped up by claws and cold magic, worse though Talefir's was body never found. His best friend was gone.

The Rau physician pronounced him fit for the Board of Inquiry and Yarag was told it was merely a formality. However no one realised just how angry and upset the man was.

The following morning the Board, led by Colonel Antinos Sadar with the good Major Famovar Khatru as prosecutor, was convened to discuss the lost patrol. However Yarag soon faced questions of cowardice. His obvious survival and lack of memory led to many raised eyebrows from the Board, this fuelled the hectoring Major onwards. It wasn't a formality, this was House politics at its dirtiest. Yarag was unprepared and he reacted with anger and insults. But what led to his court-marial was the Major's broken jaw after one too many questions.

Stripped of his future and freindless, Yarag headed home. But he was met by a cold and distant mother, she told him he was no longer part of the House, he had cost them dear and as such should never bother anyone again - he was an embarassment. To help him on his way he received a pittance of an inheritance and no goodbye.

Luckily his old batman from the cadets, X, was outside. The halfling took the dazed youth to his cousin's Inn, the Wishing Well. It took several days for Yarag to work out that he was out of the family but slowly as he worked on the docks, it dawned on the ex-noble how alone he was.

His only other friend was Hegdera Nagel, Talefir's spunky sister, who tracked him down to start finding out what happened in the Necropolis. However as a noblewoman, she may not visit the docks much at all and her presence just made Yarag all the more sorrowful for himself.

At the moment Yarag has no future, he is still dwelling on the past, marking time in his life and drinking away his inheritance for nothing better to do with his time.

Description

Spoiler:

Yarag is tall and slim with wide shoulders. He tries to dress neat and tidy but not flamboyant. Noble and honest, he tended to listen rather than talk especially now his polished voice would make him stand out.

Personality

Spoiler:

Yarag's personality is a touch reserved, he loves to scrap and fight but that is not something a noble should do. His high morals and honour were always a bit lost among the House politics. But at the moment, Yarag is a bit numb from the House kicking him out.
