I ran this adventure 4 times at PaizoCon - 1 table did almost no external defense and didn't have any engineers. It was my first table, so I took it a bit easy on them, but it was almost super messy. After that table I became a lot more descriptive of the land. Players also have a hard time leaving Amara Li on her own, she is their captain and they want to defend her. Be sure to reiterate, as many times as necessary, that she is quite capable of taking care of herself and that the need for body guards is only during the meeting with the Way representative.

I've had players put the bear traps in interesting places, like outside different windows that baddies might enter, outside the front and side doors, down the cliff, etc. I had a Druid make animal traps on the sides of the cliff, pour the oil down the murder holes they made and then light it on fire. I've had whale oil end up in some very random places.

I have yet had the time to put in the optional encounter as these battles can take a really long time. Be ready to reward the creative thinking of the players, doing stuff for defense not specifically listed, but would in fact slow down the army, or keep some from arriving.

Thanks guys for the support. Once I get my friends to stop being annoying ag get through the First Steps Series, I think I will work on making my games public. I'm thinking we will be meeting in a coffee shop instead of a game store. Here are my reasons for this: 1) I can really only gm on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons; notoriously bad times to try to get into already full game stores (also, I checked our game stores are really full at that time) 2) this particular coffee shop is centrally located a plus when half the known group is really north and the other half is really south or quite outlying, also the game stores that *might* have room are not conveniently located for anyone, especially me 3) this coffee shop has rooms available for groups that are large enough to hold two tables running simultaneously if we ever get that large.
Anyone have any thoughts on this idea? Input is always welcome especially from those who are doing the majority of the leg work for getting PFS started in an area. =)

great suggestions, thank you for the support. Right now, this is going on with my home group, I really hope that once I feel confident enough in my abilities to take the game public this won't happen as often.

Woe, woe to the GM whose tables refuse to show! 3 events in a row have failed to happen because not enough players have showen up! Three adventures that I was greatly looking forward to running, that I had carefully prepared for, that I had enough people promise to show up to, that have all failed to appear at the appointed hour, or even called in advance to say, "oops can't come"! GRRRR, I find myself both saddened and annoyed at this turn of events. I realize real life happens but it would be nice to have some warning so that I can plan accordingly. The upshot is that I have not hired a babysitter each of those times and so didn't have to pay for one or feel like a loser for canceling.

Welcome from the Salem area =) Here's to coordination between the city's to the North and the South!

First Steps #3 also uses The Swamp and The Forest flip maps.

For #1 I drew the warehouse on the back of the waterfront tavern, as well as the ambush and the Paracountess' house.

I drew #2 on the plain side of the beginner box map.

I have now judged PFS tables three times and each time there has been at least one point during the session that has been a great moment for the players.

1. and 2. In Service to Lore

Spoiler:
Ambush fight: each time half or more of the table is down on the ground unconscious or dying while half or more of the bad guys are still living, the casters and ranged who are left come through with a couple of well timed crits and just barely save the party.

3. and my personal favorite so far comes from: To Delve the Dungeon Deep

Spoiler:
In the fight with the Skulk Illusionist, the skulk hides against the wall, the caster sends a magic missile in the area the skulk is expected to be, hits for a few damage. Next turn the ranger shoots at the now reveled skulk hitting right through the head right between the eyes with a confirmed crit for triple damage of 21 points, leaving it to fall to the floor to bleed out.

Anyone else have any great table moments where the party prevailed or didn't at a critical point?

Just as a note: That button doesn't show up until you have an event registered =)I looked and looked before I had my first event on the calendar and couldn't find one. I finally called to figure out what was wrong, the nice guy helped me figure out the problem. I booked my event and there it was. Good luck to you and your group =)

So I have now run a table twice. Once was in a different world and now once First Steps: In Service to Lore. And I have a couple of questions.

1. I have one PC, a halfling, using a pony and cart to avoid encumbrance issues.
a)This isn't a problem is it?
b)How many tricks can this pony be taught?
c)Can the party ranger be the one to teach this pony said number of tricks? (Using handle animal, of course) =)
d)What tricks does this pony come "pre-programed" with?

2. In the section for delving the Salhar ancestral vaults, the player hand out,

Spoiler:
Specifically says, "You will receive an official charter and detailed maps." However, I can't find anywhere else that mentions this "Official charter." Is it supposed to be in with the map or handed to them before entering the vault?

TIA =)

Lantern Lodge *

yep that was it, wow my questions seem to make more sense in my head then they do to others =) Thanks for your help =)

Lantern Lodge *

That link is quite helpful, thank you! One more question on this and I think I will be good. Do second characters who play through the scenarios gain access to rewards even though they do not gain gold, prestige, or XP?

Lantern Lodge *

Thanks =)So, what would a GM do for reporting purposes in a situation where the player is playing a second character through a previously run scenario because they loved it so much they wanted to do it again =)

Lantern Lodge *

So the core of my question has been answered, now, does anyone know why it is set up like this?
Once you have all the materials this is only challenging because you have to figure out what to run and hope players can/want to run it, but when you are starting a chapter, like my husband and I are, it seems daunting.

Lantern Lodge *

So, to better clarify. I can play a scenario with character number 1, but I can't play it again with character number 2, is that correct?

Lantern Lodge *

Hello, I'm new to this and I'm confused about getting credit for scenarios. Here is my understanding after I get past levels 1 and 2, I can only run a scenario once ever to get a chronicle sheet and then GM it once for a GM sheet, after that character #2 or greater can't run that scenario. Is this correct? If so, why? Doesn't that seem to shaft GM's who don't get to play often? or limit the re-usability of materials purchased? Thank you =)

Lantern Lodge

I really enjoyed playing BG but couldn't get my brain wrapped around the changes that were made in BG2, so I didn't enjoy it. I also loved the Neverwinter Night games so much fun!

Lantern Lodge *

wow! totally missed it! twice =) thanks

Lantern Lodge *

I get the basics of PFS but one thing that really confuses me is that the "We Be Goblins" scenario is a sanctioned module (at least when you are purchasing it, it says it is) but it is for goblin characters. PFS information, FAQ, and the additional resources all seem to say that goblins can't be played in PFS games. How do these two opposite things square? Am I just reading something wrong? TIA =)
