BACKGROUND
Unlike many half-elves, who tell sad stories of human mothers abandoned by roguish elves or elven mothers violated by warlike humans, Xara’s tale is one of a loving home created for her and her sister by two mixed-breed parents. Both retired adventurers themselves, Xara’s parents fully expected their daughters to both latch on to their own wanderlust and drive for excitement. They were quite puzzled when their oldest, Treya, held no interest in such things, preferring the more mundane excitement of attracting and leading on the menfolk of their small neighbourhood in Magnimar. Therefore, when the younger sister Xara did show interest, they lavished all their attentions on her and her training. Her father, Rommel, attempted to mold her into a warrior, with exercises of the body. She lifted weights, ran marathons, dodged rocks, and trained with weapons, mainly rapiers like her father. Her mother, Prayna, schooled her in the arcane arts of conjuration, molding her mind into the disciplined school of wizardry. Together, they thought to fashion for themselves a magus, one of the legendary warriors who blend weaponry and magic with such skill and mastery, so it was quite a surprise to them when Trig first appeared during summoning practice. Trig, so obviously fantastical and unusual, was the cause of much research, but once they realized they had inadvertently created a summoner, they embraced their youngest daughter’s success. Treya thought the whole thing quite boring, really.
When Xara was ready to head out into the world to seek her adventure, her father gave her a rapier of her own, specially crafted for his adventurer daughter, and her mother bestowed upon her a scroll case – hard leather and monogrammed with an ‘X’. Xara hugged her family good-bye, promised to write often, and left to seek her fortune.
Xara was in Sandpoint, having left her family for grand adventures a short while ago, when goblins attacked during a local festival. She naturally helped defeat the attack, and with a group of others, including a gruff elven trapper/archer/follower-of-Desna Valayne, whose heart she eventually melted, she helped neutralize the goblin threat to the settlement. Having thwarted the plans of a Lamashtu cleric to get her revenge, she and her friends came to the aid of the town once again to solve some grisly murders. The investigation eventually led them to conflict in a gruesome haunted house, which in turn, led them back to Xara's home city of Magnimar. It was after a heart-pounding conflict where Valayne nearly sacrificed himself to save Xara from a horrible death, that the two finally admitted their feelings for each other.
They enjoyed some time of peace together, before Valayne got word that some rangers at Fort Rannick, to whom he had many strong ties, may be in trouble. Off they went, and pitted themselves against ogres. Eventually, they learned the unfortunate fate of the rangers, and reclaimed Fort Rannick. It was at this time that Xara's renown had grown enough that the Acadamae came a-calling, and offered her a position on their faculty. Rare for a non-academic wizard, Xara accepted, instructing in planar knowledge and eidolon meta-physics. She took a few days off, however, to attend a celebration in Sandpoint, an anniversary of their defeat of the goblins. Xara, who had begun to convert to follow Desna, thanks to her husbands constant prodding, was eager to return and participate in the festival, do she was there when the giants and dragon attacked.
The group fought well, as expected, but the giants were powerful, and the dragon fierce. Near the end of the battle, Valayne sacrificed himself in single combat against the dragon, defending some fleeing families. Xara was devastated, even more so since the Desna-worshipper had made it clear that, should he ever fall in battle, he would consider moving on to the next life a great journey, and not one he would want to be raised from.
Xara, grief-stricken, retreated to her small Kirvosan flat, with only enough presence of mind to send several heroes of Korvosa, men and women responsible for restoring peace to that city, to help her friends defeat the giants.
In honor of her husband, Xara dedicated herself to Desna, vowing to search the planes until she finds him again. Eventually, her travels brought her to encounter several powerful outsiders in Desna's service, including her herald. Through him, Desna agreed to allow Valayne, if he wished, to visit Xara on a plane of her creation, provided she continued her travels and spread the faith as best she could. Desna sent a ghaele azata named Fritz to accompany her on her journeys.
Since then, Xara has traveled many planes, with Fritz and Trig, her eidolon, teaching at the Acadamae, and creating an extra-planar refuge for herself and others she finds on her travels who need a place to stay.
A DC 5 knowledge check would reveal that she is some sort of summoning specialist, and one of the Sandpoint heroes.
DC 10 reveals that she teaches at the Korvosan Acadamae and that she is a summoner. Her eidolon is named Trig.
DC 15 reveals that she left the Sandpoint heroes after her husband died defending Sandpoint. She herself is an honored person at Fort Rannick. She has been offered noble titles by the Lord Mayor of Magnimar, but refused them.
DC 20 reveals that she has family living in Magnimar, and has formed a partnership in recent years with a ghaele azata named Fritz.
DC 25 reveals that she spends a great deal of time traveling the planes in the service of Desna.
DESCRIPTION
Xara is a tall and graceful woman, slight of build. She proudly displays the physical evidence of her mixed parentage – her hair combed back to reveal pointed ears and expose the beauty of her sapphire elven eyes. She wears her hair in a long, elaborate pony tail which reaches to her hips and she is often guilty of fiddling and fidgeting with its end when she’s nervous or thinking deeply. While laughter in her youth started some lines around her eyes, grief and sorrow have deepened and lengthened them.
Xara has a very forceful personality, as befits someone with a 34 Charisma. She cares little in the way of social skills, though her natural charm aids her plenty in dealings with shopkeepers and everyday folks. Sarcasm is her default stance when threatened or annoyed, and her humor and language runs slightly to the crude. She also takes personal threats and dangers very, well, personally. Her compassion for those who are victims and innocents knows no bounds, and her anger flares hot and righteous. On her private demiplane, she has set up a unique mishmash "orphanage", in a way, of followers from across the multiverse she's helped over her travels.
