I'm unsure of how our group's initiative pertains to the other group's fight, but here's my action, which you can allow to go off whenever it's appropriate:

Spoiler:

Vethran grins wickedly as the last of the goblins before him falls, then turns his attention to the other group.

"Hmph," he grunts, seeing more goblins on the move. Dipping his hand into his component pouch and producing a bit of ash, he intones another spell, targetting one of the offending wretches.

Targetting whichever goblin seems to be the least damaged with kelgore's fire bolt. It's a medium range spell (130 ft.) so the targets are easily within range. The spell deals 3d6 fire damage with a DC 15 Reflex save for half. 3d6: 1 + 2 + 2 = 5. Crappy roll. Hopefully he'll fail the save and die anyway. :D Obviously, if the others manage to kill the other group before my action, I save myself a spell slot.

They are standing close to one another - ajoining squares in a v-formation.

It sounds like I can move 15' forward and cast, hitting them all without having to enter a threatened square (since burning hands is a cone effect). I'm basically putting an empty 5' square between myself and the lead goblin.

Vethran, seeing the goblins approaching in formation, rushes towards them and begins an arcane chant. He stops just a few feet short of the lead goblin as his tattoo flares to life, the draconic figure seeming to move as eldritch fire spews forth from it's mouth, moving swiftly to Vethran's hands and fanning out before him in a torrent of lethal flame.

They need to make DC 15 Reflex saves. 3d4 damage: 2 + 2 + 4 = 8. Reflex save for 4.

What formation are the goblins in? Can I nail all of the ones near my group with a single casting of burning hands somehow?

"OK? I'm all for keeping things simple. Do you have any... special talents we should know about?"

Vethran simply smirked, rolling up his left sleeve to reveal an intricate tattoo of a red dragon covered in all manner of arcane sigils wrapping it's way up the entirety of his arm.

"I'm a mage."

Startled by the shrieking, Vethran stands quickly, his carefully annotated page falling to the floor next to him.

"What the..." the mage's sentence is cut short as he sees the goblins approaching. With a scowl, he reaches into his component pouch. "Goblins. Wretched little things," he looks at the two Shoanti nearby and the elf behind him. "Try to keep them close together. No sense in making this difficult..."

Initiative: 15 + 2 = 17. How far away are the goblins from my position?

Vethran blinked and turned to regard the one who addressed him, looking up at the man from his seated position and smiled.

"Ah... well... they're letters. Words. In the Varisian tongue. I'm taking notes on the presentation so that I can look them over later. I'm curious to learn whether or not there is any mystic significance to the arrangement of certain ritual details or if this is indeed just a simple celebration. Religious rituals are something I haven't often gotten a chance to analyze... so I figured this was as good a place as any to start."

The mage smiled again, seemingly amazed that someone actually cared what he was doing. He set down the quill he was using and offered the man a handshake, not bothering to stand from his seat. "I'm Vethran."

Unaware (or possibly just unconcerned) about the looming figure reading his notations, the young mage listens intently to the presentation while his eyes wander over the crowd.

Spot: 19 + 1 = 20

-Sounding of a bronze bell initiates the final phase of the ritual.

-High Priest ascends to podium to begin the ceremony's conclusion.

Vethran had been keeping diligent notes on the activities transpiring before him, feeling that there was likely some mystical significance to the various presentations and ostentatious displays of the ceremony. It was not often that Vethran found a chance to study the vagaries of religion or, more specifically, religious ritual and magic, so now was as good a time as any to jot down a few points to ponder later.

He finished scribbling the notes onto the page and raised his head again with an eager smile, waiting to hear the ceremonial climax.

OK - we will be kicking off on Monday. Think about why your characters are in Sandpoint (already dealt with motly) and why they are hanging about during the consecration ceremony of the new temple there.

Vethran is going there out of morbid curiosity. He's probably going to keep to himself, watching from the back of the crowd, but he'd show up mostly because there's nothing better to do in town for him at the moment.

But no tat's.

My Varisian tattoo is all up my left arm. It says "Burn M+@%#+*$~*$#s!" in Thassilon. And the letters are all fiery and stuff. S'cool. ;)

*is ready to burn stuff*

So, I'm really considering the Energy Affinity option to replace the familiar that Dragonmann listed earlier. I'm curious to see

  • a) if Aubrey will allow it and;
  • b) which energy type I should choose.
I'm leaning towards fire, personally, but electricity might also be cool. Fire seems to fit the character concept better, though, and I won't be unable to use other energy types (in case we fight fire immune things), I just won't be quite as devastating.

Thoughts?

It is in Complete mage, on page 34 - he loses 1 "general" slot and gains two "specialist" slots instead. Thus, Fate's memorised spells should look like this:

Level 1: 0 + (3 evocation) + (bonus spells from stats, in his case 1)
= 4 level 1 spells, three of whom must be Evocation

Thus, as he forgot to remove one "general" spell slot, he needs to de-memorise a spell.

Ah, I missed the part about losing a general slot. Ah, well. I have made the correction.

Evidently, the Focused Specialist gives you two more spells of your focused school per day (in addition to the one granted by being a 'normal' specialist) instead of just one. I have adjusted the sheet accordingly.

BOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

Equipment is done. I believe he's all set. However, I want to look at the PHB2 Specialist variant that gives up the familiar for a spell-like ability useable a few times per day. I don't know what the Evocation one is. The Conjuration one is awesome, though.

EDIT: Actually, it makes sense that a tremendous introvert would get a familiar. The whole "you're my only friend" angle. I might stick with one. It depends on how badass the Evocation ability is...

I can't find starting cash in the SRD. Can anyone tell me how much I have to spend?

Here's what I've got so far. I'll have to work out the specifics of equipment when I actually have books to look at, though I might be able to dig up what I need from the SRD...
