Appearance Verronax is 6 feet tall and 232 lbs. He has typical Chelish looks, pale skin and black hair (that’s a little too long), but his black eyes seem haunted and grim, and his jaw is clenched in determination. He wears a suit of ancestral scale mail, handed down from his uncle in the priesthood, and proudly displays the silver key-and-city holy symbol of Abadar on his chest. He carries a polished halberd, and a well-oiled crossbow hangs at his hip. He wears a signet ring, a gift from Jacaranda, on a thin chain around his neck, under his armor.

Background

Spoiler:
Verronax comes from one of Korvosa’s oldest Chelish families. Originally, the Therellions were (very) minor nobility, but over time their influence, prestige, and wealth waned, until their noble standing finally disappeared for good during the Cousins’ War of 4502 ar. Nevertheless, tradition is of great importance to the Therellions: they live in an old manor in the Mainshore ward of North Point, and as the family’s second son, it was Verronax’s duty to join the clergy of Abadar. He was brought up in a strictly regimented household, taught to respect and uphold the foundations of Law and Order, and so his investiture in the priesthood was simply the result of following the path laid out for him since childhood.

While still an initiate in the church, Verronax met the beautiful Jacaranda Karythros, a scion of another old Chelish family, and the two quickly fell in love. The match was approved by both families, and a wedding was planned to follow Verronax’s official confirmation in the priesthood. Sadly, only a month before the wedding, Jacaranda was apparently attacked and knifed to death in a dark alley one night. Verronax was summoned by the Korvosan Guard to identify her body, where he noticed that her engagement ring was missing.

Filled with grief over Jacaranda’s death, Verronax decided to take the law into his own hands. Eventually he discovered the missing engagement ring for sale in a jeweler’s window. Unable to afford to buy it back, Verronax was able to convince the merchant to tell him from whom he acquired the ring: a petty crimelord named Gaedren Lamm.

Verronax is convinced that this Gaedren Lamm is Jacaranda’s murderer. However, the Korvosan Guard seems unwilling or unable to bring the man to justice, so Verronax has dedicated his life to finding the scoundrel himself. Verronax has become much darker since Jacaranda’s death, and has begun following a much stricter interpretation of Law, even going so far as to consider joining the ranks of the Hellknights, though that day is still far off. By day, Verronax serves the Church of Abadar as a liaison with the Korvosan Guard. By night, he stalks the night-dark alleys of Old Korvosa, searching for Gaedren Lamm. When he finds him, Verronax will see that justice is served, preferably painfully. Once that is taken care of, he will buy back the engagement ring to give back to Jacaranda in her grave.
