Backstory:
To the uninformed, being of Infernal descent, a Tiefling, in a land that worships Devils might sound like a life of luxury. Reality is far different. More than just looked down upon, Tieflings are second-class citizens in Cheliax; most are slaves, and few are anything more than servants.
Vera's life began when her birth thrust what was thought to be a perfectly normal human family into turmoil. Numerous horns, a whip-like spaded tail, and scaly skin the color of brick dust immediately revealed the Hellish blood that existed at the fringes of her family tree, and she quickly became a dirty little secret to her parents.
She grew up hungry and sickly, a product of the neglect only disgust can rouse out of parents, and even if her family wanted to pay for any kind of education she would not have been allowed entry into even the most primitive university.
Adversity has made her strong, however. She developed into a strong and resilient lass, and necessity (from many messy interactions with Hellknights and other arbiters of Asmodeus' unique sense of legal justice) made her wiser. These were hardly marketable skills when her skin proclaimed her worthless, though, and she was left with few options beyond mercenary or peasant. Since most people were loathe to pay a Tiefling to do much of anything, she decided to spend her time honing her inherent talent for navigating the law. Taking to the monasteries of Isger, she attempted to find a path through life that was available to one with her heritage.
Among the Sisters of the Golden Erinyes, Vera found an environment surprisingly welcoming to one like her. The order made its history taking in orphans, the war-torn, the displaced, and the unwanted, and she certainly was the latter. Immersing herself in the study of Asmodeus' esoteric and convoluted law as well as combat, her days were spent honing the skills she developed during her troubled youth. While she never had the aptitude for the Hamatulatsu Style that the Devil Nuns were known for, she found another way of emulating the Devil's barbs: the bow and arrow. Specializing in firing a barrage of needles from afar, she is certainly capable of the torture and pain that her Sisters are known for inflicting.
As an adult, Vera is a believer in the orderly structure of Cheliax to the highest degree: it is through their order and discipline, including the hardships it brought, that she became the warrior-scholar she is today. She disdains those who seek to get around or undermine the law, seeing those who choose not to embrace their place in society as weak or fools. Her crimson robes, branded with the golden pentagram of Asmodeus, mark her as a member of her order and fend off many of the problems she would otherwise face as a Tiefling and, thanks to her years of study, she can run circles around the vast majority of people in the world of the Devils' laws. She is not immune to the downward gaze of others who see only her heritage; she takes great pleasure in tearing down those who lord themselves over her undeservedly, preferring to use threats of the legal variety.
Although she is a devout follower of Asmodeus, she is not evil. Rather, she is a firm believer in the order and structure that the Lord of Devils promises. Through his laws, all get what they deserve. The Kingdom shall be His, as shall be all creation once again.
