Dread Gnome Abilities
Fell Magic: Gnomes add +1 to the DC of any saving throws against necromancy spells that they cast. Gnomes with Wisdom scores of 11 or higher also gain the following spell-like abilities: 1/day—bleed, chill touch, detect poison, and touch of fatigue. The caster level for these effects is equal to the gnome's level. The DC for these spells is equal to 10 + the spell's level + the gnome's Wisdom modifier.

Gift of Tongues: Gnomes love languages and learning about those they meet. Gnomes with this racial trait gain a +1 bonus on Bluff and Diplomacy checks, and they learn one additional language every time they put a rank in the Linguistics skill.

Knack with Poison: Some gnomes have an instinctive understanding of poisons and their uses. Gnomes gain a +2 racial bonus on Fortitude saves against poison and a +2 bonus on Craft (alchemy) checks to make poison. The bonus on Fortitude saving throws against poisons increases to +4 if the gnome accidentally poisons himself when applying or readying the substance.

Low-Light Vision: Gnomes can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light.

Keen Senses: Gnomes receive a +2 racial bonus on Perception checks.
Rogue Abilities
Hidden Blade: A knife master adds 1/2 her level on Sleight of Hand checks made to conceal a light blade. This ability replaces trapfinding.

Sneak Stab (Ex): A knife master focuses her ability to deal sneak attack damage with daggers and similar weapons to such a degree that she can deal more sneak attack damage with those weapons at the expense of sneak attacks with other weapons. When she makes a sneak attack with a dagger, kerambit, kukri, punching daggers, starknife, or swordbreaker dagger (Advanced Player's Guide 178), she uses d8s to roll sneak attack damage instead of d6s. For sneak attacks with all other weapons, she uses d4s instead of d6s. This ability is identical in all other ways to sneak attack, and supplements that ability.

Finesse Training (Ex): At 1st level, a rogue gains Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat. In addition, starting at 3rd level, she can select any one type of weapon that can be used with Weapon Finesse (such as rapiers or daggers). Once this choice is made, it cannot be changed. Whenever she makes a successful melee attack with the selected weapon, she adds her Dexterity modifier instead of her Strength modifier to the damage roll. If any effect would prevent the rogue from adding her Strength modifier to the damage roll, she does not add her Dexterity modifier. The rogue can select a second weapon at 11th level and a third at 19th level.

Background:

I
It's all in the eyes, Harnan said: folks with something to hide, or something to gain, unless they're capable of real control, they give themselves away in a thousand ways. But the eyes are the place to start. But you've not the knack of it: you've got talent aplenty but you're a cold-hearted sort. Now that's an advantage, but not all the time and everywhere. You treat people as things. But things don't give themselves away the way people do.
Ah, but they do you tell yourself inwardly. Just others don't always sense it. Not like me.

II
This pain, you think, trying desperately to focus, to surpass the work of knife and rack, chain and spike. How much longer can it continue. Longer than I? No!
Mendreth chuckles, jowls wobbling like udders full of milk - or venom. You chose the wrong house to pilfer from, little one. But I am not surprised: I have learned a considerable amount during your examination. You have a nose for such things, don't you? The power inherent in things, the weight of experience and emotion gathered across time, exists to be wielded by the wise. You can sense it, in a weak fashion. When I have finished with you, you will not only know more than most folk about pain, you will know how to use your talents more wisely, and begin your path to power.

Varinder is a Dread Gnome from Nidal. After falling afoul of a very punitive Kuthite noble, he fled his homeland and made his to Ustalav. He has a minor gift for psychic magic that he hopes to develop, but for now, he is a sneakthief and killer - usually without conscience, but he is not immune to feelings of camaraderie. Generally, however, he considers his actions through a calculus of advantage - to gain what he wants. And what he wants most is to gather rare and powerful items and bend their power to his will.
