Background:
Vandell doesn't remember his family, his earliest memories are of him living as a street urchin in Sandpoint. He got by begging and pick pocketing. Sandru met Vandell while he was trying to lift his coin purse, and seeing a little of his former self in the boy. As the young rogue tried to bring out the good to the young Varsian and the two became good friends, Vandell saw him as a older brother.

One night the Varsian was fixing for some fun by scaring an young milk maid, with a borrowed thunderstone from his "big brother" he pursued his prey. Vandell followed her until he found his prime opportunity while she was milking one of the cows, he threw down the stone and the cows panicked. They ended up trampling the girl in the process, Vandell wanted to run and hide but something inside of him told him to try and save the girl. He picked up the girl and rushed her to Sandru not knowing where else to take her. His friend got Koya and she treated the girls wounds as Sandru and Vandell wanted in the other room. The young Varisan spent the not crying and apologizing.

As the morning came around Vandell woke up Koya arguing with the young girls father and the local sheriff demanding Vandell's hide. As she got them to leave, the elder women walked into the room ordering Vandell to follow her. He began to question but she cut him off and pointed to the door. Vandell was taken to the crossroads near town where they met a man wearing a worn set of robes and a strange staff on his back. Koya explained that this was Master Kuresh and the boy had two choices go with him or be taken to the sheriff and be put away. Vandell agreed to go with the man, Koya gave a smile and told the boy that if he doesn't follow Master Kuresh she will find him and bring him back to face his punishment. With the fear in him he went with the man without question.

Master Kuresh was part of a Varisan order called "The Warriors of the Winding Path". An order of varisan monks that traveled by themselves to watch over travelers and keep up the honor code of the varisan caravan. The traditional weapon of the Warriors of the winding path is a Sansetsukon, it represents that monk travels may have many twists and turns but ultimately has only two points the begining of his training and ends when his duty is over. Over the years Master Kuresh took Vandell all over the lands, he met many different people from Chelish Merchants to a Mwangi guides. The Master let him go off on his own and bestowed his Sansetsukon(also called the winding path) onto Vandell and let him set off on his own.

Through his travels he heard of his former friend Sandru had a caravan and decided to go back to his former home of Sandpoint. He also wished to thank Koya and to seek forgiveness from girl and her father for what he did.
