Star Voter Season 6

Just wanted to check something. Is there a preference by the judges as to flagging something for formatting?

I've voted for some items and I've noticed that there might be instances where certains words aren't bolded as appropriate, or the title of the item isn't in the main submission, etc. Often times on the boards we'll see posts of how the judges overlook these "smaller" issues if the item is truly good otherwise. Should we as voters be doing that as well?

I only ask because I don't necessarily want to send a bunch of items to the judges for review just for formatting issues if the judge is just gonna say that's fine and let the item back in. This would negate the whole point of the voting, as far as saving time, etc.

And on a side note, REALLY digging this initial voting decision for RPGSS2013. This is making the whole contest feel a lot more involved this time around, like I have even more of a stake in it. Kudos to you Paizo!

With the dying of daylight, a fog creeps across the land, clutching everything in its clammy grasp. Even for Ustalav, the fog feels especially thick and ominous as it covers the earth beneath it. Inside the Weary Horse Inn, though, the fire is warm enough, and if the few patrons are sullen and stare at you a little boldly, at least the food and drink are good. Plus in Ustalav, staring warily at strangers is almost something of a national art.

For an inn’s common room, it’s quiet. It holds no more than a handful of customers other than yourselves. They keep their voices low, and even the clink of their mugs seems subdued as the fog gathers outside. When the door swings open, every head turns to see who has arrived.

This new arrival loudly stamps the mud off his boots in the doorway. He scans the room and settles his gaze on your table as you all sit quietly watching him. He strides confidently over, throwing a letter down on the table in front of you.

The village of Barovia is in need of heroes. His accent is thick but not so much that you can’t understand him. You’ll do as well as any. Without another word he turns to leave.

And with that do we begin your perilous trek to Ravenloft!

You all know what this is for. Check in and start getting to know one another.

Ustalav is a land of darkness and malevolence. Yet even in this land tales exist of beacons of good that stood against the blight. One such tale was that of the Sunsword, a legendary blade that was used to help defeat the Whispering Tyrant himself. Considered little more than a rumor of a myth now by most, one man is convinced that he’s learned of it’s true whereabouts.

You have been approached by Petros Lorrimor, an up-and-coming professor at the University of Lepidstadt, to find this mystical blade. His research has led him to believe that it was last seen in the remote mountain valley of Barovia, an isolated area far removed from the rest of Ustalav that contained a small village of the same name. Will you find the legendary blade or will this turn out to be nothing more than another wild goose chase?

That's right folks...
Expedition to Castle Ravenloft Golarion-style!

This will be the full Expedition to Ravenloft 3.5 module, updated to the PFRPG rules. I am looking for 5 6th-level characters who think they can defeat the Immortal Vampire Count Strahd.

Character Creation Guidelines:

  • 20 Point Buy
  • All races and classes are available. Note: I'm fairly open to character design choices, I've made some crazy ones myself. But understand that my decision is made solely on the strength of the writing of the submission. So for instance if you have a Kitsune Ninja you really want to play, I better receive a very good reason for why they're traveling through Ustalav other than "the mechanics are awesome".
  • 16,000 starting gold. Note: No individual item can cost more than 4,000gp. You can't sink all your money into a super sword and run around naked. :-)
  • Alignment: No evil and I'd prefer Good if you're willing. You're supposed to be the heroes of this story and gold should be a secondary reason for why you're waging war against the vapire lord.

The single biggest determination on my character picking!
In your character submission, I want to see a well written and engaging backstory. This will be the weight of your submission with me so make it count. Length does not necessarily equal well written, so don't be discouraged if you can only come up with a paragraph or two. Quality vs quantity and all that. I ask for this because ultimately, mechanics can be taught to someone but I can't make you a better writer or teach you how to post interesting and engaging posts. I really can't stress this enough, if you submit a stat block and 2 sentences about your character you will not be in a good position when I go to choose. If you submit only the race and class you're going to propose intially but it comes with a well written and intelligent backstory, you can very easily be picked to join the game.

Lastly, I understand people have real lives and the holidays are also coming up. That being said, I am looking for people who can post a minimum of once per day during the week. As any who have played in my games know, outside of extenuating circumstances I post multiple times a day Mon-Fri and ideally look for the same. This is gonna be a long module and I don't want it to slow down any more than it has to.

So if you're excited to give this a go and haven't been scared off by my requests, then submit a concept and let's see what shakes out.

The wind gusted down the road and the scent of the early fall day filled your nose as you rode towards Ravengro and the Professor. The day was cool and comfortable, the sun's weak rays keeping you just warm enough. The trees that appeared along the road were covered in explosions of yellow, red, and orange, their leaves still clinging to the limbs but also seeming ready to drop.

Most of this seemed to pass you with little notice as your thoughts kept drifting to memories of the Professor. The shock of his death had worn off during the trip and all that was left now were the memories you had of the man you had called friend. And the curiosity of the letter you received from his daughter.

While you were close to Petros, you never imagined you would be included in the man's will. It had been some time since you last saw him and he certainly never made it known that he had a will or that you would be included in it. Still, even without the will reading you knew you wanted to attend this last tribute to the Professor, a man who touched your life so directly.

You arrive at the entrace to the Restlands, Ravengro's well maintained cemetary grounds on the outside of town. There are only a small number of people gathered, locals from the look of them who eye you warily as you approach. You also see a young woman standing near the coffin, her eyes red and her tears identifying her as Lorrimor's daughter.

As you move up, you notice others arriving as well. Like yourself, they seem kitted out in the gear of an adventurer and they all seem like capable individuals. It appears your's was not the only life the Professor touched in his long career.

As everyone gathers near the entrance, Lorrimor's daughter nods to you all in thanks before motioning to the coffin. Will any of you help bear my father to his new home?

Welcome to Carrion Crown everyone!

Post your thoughts/reactions/etc as you will. Introduce yourselves as much or as little as you like right now. There will be time later on to give deeper meetings of yourselves to each other if you'd prefer.

Also in your posts, please include whether or not you wish to be a pallbearer for the Professor's coffin. Up to all 6 of you may do so but a minimum of 4 people is required to carry it. While none move forward initially, the local townsfolk in attendance will take up whatever spots are empty if enough people don't want to do it.

Other than that, get to posting and I look forward to gaming with all of you!

Most of you should know the drill by now, here's the OOC thread for the game. Introduce yourselves, figure out if any of you want to have met prior to the beginning of the game. As I said in the recruitment thread, there's the holiday this week and additionally I have my sister in town this week so I don't know exactly when we'll get started but it should be by the end of the week I hope.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have and otherwise welcome aboard!

As my other AP-based game is running smoothly I've decided to attempt to run the Carrion Crown AP here on the boards as well. I'm looking for 5 players. FYI, I already have one person who has a reserved spot, if I hear from them and they want it. I think most people are familiar with this AP but if not think classic horror, Ravenloft, etc.

Character Creation Guide (General):

I am looking for a solid backstory submission and a brief outline of the mechanics you plan on taking (class/race/alignment for sure, then maybe stats, starting feats, etc). I don't expect or require a full character sheet or profile be created for this, feel free to wait till you're accepted if you'd like. I know I hate creating a profile only to be passed up in the end. If you want to do a full build or profile, by all means I'm not stopping you. Although see the next point.

I am looking for a solid backstory submission for your character. This will have more weight with me than a fully completed character sheet. My philosophy is that mechanics can be taught, good writing and inventiveness can't. Please don't take the time to build a full character sheet and then only submit 2 sentences about who they are. I want to see how well you write and what type of RPer you're going to be in the game.

I just want to reiterate the above, backstory is weighed heavily on this. I only glance at the character sheet when I'm reading entries so don't think having an impressive build is going to be enough to sway me.

Character Creation Guide (Mechanics):

Everyone starts at 1st level. 20 point buy, Max HP, Avg starting gold for your class.

Races: All core. If you want to submit a non-standard race as an option that's fine but you'll need to sell me on it and I will want to see a strong backstory to justify the race selection, mechanical synergy isn't enough of a reason.

Classes: Pretty much anything Paizo published including Core, APG, UM and UC (and all associated Archetypes) with the following exceptions/caveats. No Ninjas or Samurais. These two are too heavily Asian-inspired for my taste for this game. The Gunslinger is available but please note that guns being as rare as they are, you will not have much in the way of support during the campaign. Gunpowder won't be readily available at shops and you won't see a lot of gun-themed treasure coming your way. Just keep that in mind if you decide to play one and are accepted. Also for everyone, I would ideally like a "well-rounded" party so keep that in mind when people start submitting, you might have a better chance applying for a less filled submission category.

Alignment: Anything but Evil based. You guys are the Good guys in this AP, you're generally fighting evil monsters. There will be areas of moral vagueness as in any game but generally you're the heroes.

Traits: You will have 2 traits. 1 must be a campaign trait from the Carrion Crown Player's Guide that you may choose. The other trait will be chosen by me. This will be based on your backstory submission or the general impression of your character that I take away from your submission. If you want to angle for a specific trait, then write it up well in the backstory but it will ultimately be chosen by me regardless.

General Game Guidelines:
Regarding availability expectations it's pretty standard. Some of you may have played with me but I am a HEAVY poster Mon-Fri (10-15 per day) but I'm conversely a very sporadic poster on the weekends. I'm looking for a minimum 1-2 posts per day during the week from you as players. If you're going to be away that's fine, just make sure to let the group know ahead of time if you can. I run a fast game, barring real life snarls, and I like to keep things active.

That's about it. If I missed anything or you have questions, feel free to let me know. I don't have a firm cut off for the submissions, kind of a "we'll see how many I get and when". I'm assuming and planning that I'll have more than enough people to choose from by the end of the weekend but it might be longer or shorter depending on the number of submissions.

So good luck to all and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Images of the night's revelry flash in your mind, good loud music, flirty wenches of questionable morals, and free-flowing delicious wine. The rich smell of stewed beef lingers in your nostrils from the kitchens. It was truly a night worthy of the Pirate capital of the Shackles. Yet you can't seem to remember how it ended. For some there was a gentle slip into unconsciousness brought on by too much wine, or possibly too much additive to your wine. For others, a sharp blow to the head that took the lights out with a snap.

A light burns through the hazy fog of your recollection, waking you fully to the heahache pounding behind your eyes. The pulsing of the pain seems to match the rythmn of floor swaying beneath you and it's almost enough to make you think you're still drunk, except for the nausea that suddenly boils in your stomach. The wine that tasted so good the night before is more like stale ash on your tongue this morning.

Daring to open your eyes you can see the gloomy confines of a ship's interior. You see others around you slowly coming to, faces you recognize from the Formidably Maid the night before also the worse for wear like yourself. Looking around yourselves, you quickly realize that you've been stripped of everything, the only thing on you being the clothes on your back.

Young Tully:
You quickly pat your chest and realize with relief that they left your battered holy symbol around your neck. Apparently they weren't too concerned with you having it.

Calvin the Surgeon:
While Tobias is nowhere to be seen, thankfully the brutes left your pouch of materials strapped to your belt.

The above assumes you bought a spell component pouch after my OOC post. Also, although your familiar is currently missing, you still have your memorized spells from the day before still prepped. Once you cast them though, you'll be spell-less until you find or replace him.

Xanxan:
Casually brushing your hand across your waist you feel a moment of relief as you feel your "tools" (thieve's tools) safely tucked into your waist band.

The light comes from a lantern held by a tall, skinny man in a long coat and breeches and boots. He wears a dark beard braided down his chest and his mouth gleams with gold teeth as he snarls cruelly at the lot of you. Six other burly men stand around him, all armed with saps.

His voice rings out in a shout as the whip in his other hand cracks out above your heads. Still abed with the sun over the yardarm?! On your feet, you filthy swabs! Get up on deck and report for duty before Cap'n Harrigan flays your flesh into sausage skins and has Fishguts fry ye up for breakfast!

Except for the few specific things I indicated above in the spoilers, all of you are stripped of everything but the clothes you're wearing (Callum you're in your fancy clothes but your hat is missing). No armor, no weapons, no gear, nothing.

And on that happy note, we begin!!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So here's the OOC thread for the game, start introducing yourselves and feel free to ask me any questions. I'll be posting some info here before we start.

Going against my better judgement, I've decided to run the Skull & Shackles AP here on the boards. I'm looking for 5 players. At this point, I don't think I need to sum up the AP, everyone seems to want a piece of this so let's dive into the nitty-gritty.

Character Creation Guide (General):

  • I am looking for a backstory submission and a brief outline of the mechanics you plan on taking (class/race/alignment for sure, then maybe stats, starting feats, etc). I don't expect or require a full character sheet or profile be created for this, feel free to wait till you're accepted if you'd like. I know I hate creating a profile only to be passed up in the end. If you want to do a full build or profile, by all means I'm not stopping you. Although see the next point.
  • I am looking for a solid backstory submission for your character.
  • Please tell me what possible position(s) you see your character filling on the ship. As the AP progresses, you will end up owning your own ship and I'd like to know how you see yourself fitting into this. There are no mechanics behind this and I won't penalize submissions if everyone lists captain as their preferred role. :-) I'm just curious on your character's take.

Character Creation Guide (Mechanics):

  • Everyone starts at 1st level. 20 point buy, Max HP, Avg starting gold for your class.
  • Races: All core. Additionally I will allow 1-2 of the PC's to be any of the following - Goblin, Orc, Tengu, or Gillman. To be clear, I am not purposefully trying to have these races used/filled. If I end up with a party of 5 humans, that's fine. I am just open to the others listed although keep in mind I will want to see a strong backstory to justify the race selection. I want the majority of the party to be "core" but I'm open to a little variety if it's well written.
  • Classes: Pretty much anything Paizo published including Core, APG, UM and UC (and all associated Archetypes) with the following exceptions. No Gunslingers, Ninjas or Samurais. The last two are too heavily Asian-inspired for my taste when running a Pirate-based game. And while the Gunslinger is a perfect fit, I just want to avoid having them in my game this go around, sorry. Also I would ideally like a "well-rounded" party so keep that in mind when people start submitting.
  • Alignment: This is a pirate game, so LG should probably not be your first choice. ;-) Evil is allowed but this is a group game so you must be able to play well with others if you go that route.
  • Traits: You will have 2 traits. 1 must be a campaign trait from the Skull & Shackles Player's Guide that you may choose. The other trait will be chosen by me. This will be based on your backstory submission or the general impression of your character that I take away from your submission. If you want to angle for a specific trait, then write it up well in the backstory but it will ultimately be chosen by me regardless.

General Game Guidelines:

That's about it. If I missed anything or you have questions, feel free to let me know. Typically this AP sees a crap-ton of submissions fairly quickly so I'm not going to be setting a solid deadline for now. I'm assuming and planning that I'll have more than enough people to choose from by the end of the week but it might be longer or shorter depending on the number of submissions.

So good luck to all and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Star Voter Season 6

This is a thread for us everyday folks to post advice and things we might have seen/learned from competitions past. Didn't see another post yet that was similar so I thought I would start one.

Before starting this please note, Sean K Reynolds has posted an amazing list of the auto-reject topics that the judges watch for and I would HIGHLY recommend reading those before anything else as they are invaluable and time saving. But as the judges have to spend a large amount of time you know, judging, it might not afford them the time to troll the boards and comment on general topics or trends that others of us might find who have the time to browse around. Or just things you think might help your fellow future designers.

So my 2 cents to start:

After requesting feedback on my item last year I noticed the following both in my own critique and some others as well. The gist of which is: Be careful with taking a good, solid idea and trying to add "just a little bit more" and really hurting the core of what you already had. This is obviously a vague and arbitrary line but let me elaborate.

I started with a fairly simple concept of having an item that let you heal by focusing your body's energies on healing while asleep. There was another neat little mechanical ability that further added to the flavor and it was pretty solid. The judges seemed to like where I was going with this and based on the feedback thread I saw, my item was held for further review before finally being passed on, which leads me to...

During the design I decided that I had to go and add a third section to my item where the user could fight in essence a "dream demon" to gain further abilities that weren't, in retrospect, worth the mechanical headaches of dealing with an ad hoc combat. This section was apparently one of the biggest factors that tanked the item for me in the end, which I totally understand. The judges thought it made it needlessly complicated and ruined the otherwise straight forward nature of my item. My wife said much the same thing when I showed it to her before submission but I told her at the time, I felt the item as is didn't really have enough pizzazz so let me come up with something "super cool" to make it pop. Turns out, I should have just left well enough alone and who knows, maybe I would have made it.

As I said, mine was not the only item I saw this type of critique on so maybe this will help someone in this iteration of the contest. Obviously it can all boil down to a matter of opinion but it was a mistake that I have since learned from and maybe others can too.

Anyone else have thoughts or things they've noticed? And of course if any judges want to chime in then by all means as best to get it from the source. :-)

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass leaving memories that become legend, then fade to myth, and are long forgot when that Age comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose within the Aiel Waste. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

Crossing the Spine of the World, south and west the wind blew past the Topless Towers of Cairhien and the ruined city outside its walls, the once boisterous city of Foregate. Now a smoldering ruin, the hot air stirred ashes and embers as it blew thru the refugee packed streets. Men and women eyed each other askance yet even more so the thousands of Aiel that seemed to pack the streets. None could get used to seeing these savages dealing openly with the Cairhienen.

On the wind blew, passing through the streets of Camelyn to furl the banners streaming above the palace of Andor. A white banner unfurled in the furnace-like blast of air, the long forgotten symbol in red and gold undulating in the air. It was known now as the Dragon Banner and only now were people starting to get used to seeing it fly over Camelyn. Rumors choked the streets as to what had happened up on the hill but everyone knew that it involved use of the One Power and that the Dragon has won the day. A tall young man practicing sword forms stopped and listened to the breeze as if hearing something on it. His deep gray eyes took on a hard aspect as he began to move even faster, all but ignoring the crowd surrounding him.

South the wind carried, the heat only increasing as it moved over the land until it gusted through the camp of a band of travelers. Horses whinnied and tents flapped as the air, which stank of death and decay, blew through the group and caused them all to flinch in apprehension. They had been traveling together for some time, heading towards Camelyn. They each had their own reasons for being in Illian initially but they all ended up with the same reason to leave. Hunkering down they all sighed slightly as the wind moved on, setting their camp for the evening and trying to forget the unnatural feel of the wind.

Hi All,

I originally started running a PBP based on a published WoT campaign, the Prophecies of the Dragon. Due to some people dropping out and the nature of the adventure itself, that PBP kind of faded and I am looking to "reboot" a Wheel of Time game. This will be a home-brewed adventure that takes place during the book series.

Info to know when posting an application:

1) I am a HUGE Wheel of Time fan. I wanted this said so you're not surprised by my other notes for the game below.

2) I will be running this using the old Wheel of Time 3.5 RPG book. This will not be a conversion to Pathfinder or 4E or any other system. This will be with the original system designed from the novels. If you don't have the book, then I'm sorry. This is simply because I was very happy with the rules they came up with and it also saves me a TON of work having to update things and translate them. I know there are a bunch of fan sites with more optional rules for the system but I won't be using those, for the same reason as I'm not converting, it's just easier for me. I hope this doesn't put anyone off the game but I just want people to know. (Note: I am "stealing" a few key updates from Pathfinder, most notably the skill list updates but these will be expanded upon when you're accepted.)

3) I am looking for ideally a 1 post per day minimum from people Mon-Fri but I totally understand that real life is rough and I will already admit planning on being guilty of missing a day from time to time. This is especially for roleplaying stuff and if you're busy for a day or two, no biggie, you're just quietly brooding when people are talking, or something like that. It's easy to work around if others are helping to carry the conversation. During combat however I will be a little more insistent on the 1/day frequency as it really does make it easier for the group as a whole.

4) This game will take place roughly during the end of the 5th book/beginning of the 6th. As I'm expecting everyone to be fans of the series, I don't really need to explain what this means exactly. One thing this will allow for is that male channelers may start with levels in the Initiate class as the Black Tower is up and recruiting at this point.

5) This is a Wheel of Time game and I will require people to be familiar and comfortable with the series. This isn't to say that you have to quote specific lines from chapters and it's not designed to limit your roleplaying options. This is being put out there so people understand that the game will be firmly set in the WoT world. A perfect example of this which fans of the series will understand: If you play a male channeler character, there will be roleplaying consequences for this. NPC's will most likely hate or fear you. Maybe both, maybe try to kill you. This is a risk you face, at least in the beginning. I want people familiar to the setting so that they're not surprised by this kind of issue or others like it. (NOTE: Other PC's are of course exempt from this kind of issue unless specifically roleplayed by the individual player. As in games where certain character concepts aka necromancers etc can create tension, my default assumption is that the PC has proved his worth to the party enough for them to overlook the undesirable trait of the other member.)

Phew that was a lot info to swallow. If you've read all the above and aren't put off and are still interested in playing in this game, then here we go.

- Sumbit a character concept/backstory. The more detail the better, but for sure I am looking for at least a small display of your WoT knowledge either in your backstory or character build ideas.

- We'll be using the standard <4d6> and dropping the lowest for ability score generation. Feel free to use the in post dice rolling mechanic for ability rolls. Max HP for all levels.

- You do not need to submit your actual character build/mechanics when applying, you may wait till you are accepted if you'd like. There will be no preference shown to people who submit both instead of just the backstory. Looking for concept initially. If you do want to create a build, we will be starting at 5th level.

Thanks for showing an interest and I hope to be playing with some of you very soon.

The all new revamped Wheel of Time game OOC thread. Please post anything OOC you want here. You'll all be starting together having worked together at least shortly so feel free to discuss any group dynamics you may want.

Here's the OOC thread, discuss what you will here. I'll have the IC thread up soon once we've firmly got everyone we're gonna get.

There are people who get things done. People who work outside the normal system of society for whoever can pay. Sometimes these are people who were denied justice by a corrupt legal system and must seek it elsewhere. Sometimes the motives are less noble but the pay more than makes up for it. Of these people and organizations, Silverstar Solutions was a name of note in the past.

Roger Silverstar opened Silverstar Solutions many years ago and in its prime, it was one of the best. Time was not kind to it however and over the years it has slowly decayed into the third-rate business it is today. Yet you all have hopes to turn that around. Whether you were not experienced enough to make it with one of the big companies or your background blacklisted you before you could even apply, all of you began working for Silverstar Solutions as a means to make a name for yourselves and bring this crumbling corporation out of the ruins.

Now, partnered with your eclectic associates who have slowly grown on you over these last few years, you takes cases as they come, solving problems for people and beings that can't solve them themselves. And in Boston, there is never a shortage of cases both mundane and supernatural that require your attentions.

-----------------------------

That's the basic setup for the game, think A-Team meets Charlie's Angels meets Supernatural. You take the jobs that pay, sometimes no matter the collateral damage, and you get them done. For submissions, what I'm looking for is a strong character story/background. If you want to put together a build/profile you can but what I really want to see is the type of character you want to play. Mechanics can only get you so far and I want to make sure that characters have strong senses of identity to really drive the story forward.

Setting Clarification: I know there is a Mage splat book on Boston (which I do have). While I might be using it, this is by no means a Mage-centric game. I happen to be from the Boston area and like the city as a historically rich setting which is why I'm using it. The splat book might get used but I'm not basing the game on it or Mage in general.

Character build creation notes:
- Characters will be created using the standard rules from nWoD (or other books as applicable, see below)
- Characters will be starting at base level so no extra xp to spend
- Characters can be created from the following:
* World of Darkness core book (I have this and most all the splat related books)
* Vampire (I have this and most all the splat related books)
* Werewolf (I have this and most all the splat related books)
* Mage (I have this and most all the splat related books)
* Promethean (I have this and most all the splat related books)

Note: (While I own them, Changeling and Hunter and all associated splat books are off limits, at least until review. Changeling flavor doesn't fit with the rest of the books in my opinion and unless everyone wanted to play a character from it, Hunter would create too much party conflict.)

Note 2: While I have access to pretty much all the books, I obviously don't have them all memorized. When creating your character please note the book and page number for all of your various choices (Merits, powers, etc). Please do this for Core books or splat books used so I can find it easier. Even if all of your stuff is straight from the Werewolf main book, this will help me find it faster when I need to. Basic things like Attributes, etc don't need pg numbers, just things that would require me to search for.

Any other questions let me know. I look forward to the submissions and running a fun game for people.

DISCLAIMER
I have run/played D&D/Pathfinder for years. I'm already running and playing in a couple of Pathfinder games both IRL and PBP. However when it comes to White Wolf, I've played a game or two IRL but it's been a while and I've never run it. I say all of this to make sure people understand that if you are interested it's going to be a pretty rocky ride in the beginning till I get my bearings on the White Wolf stuff. I really like the settings they've designed and look forward to creating stories/adventures in the world they've envisioned. Hopefully the growing pains of the game will be short and minimal but just making sure people are aware.

I'm thinking of starting up a White Wolf-based game. This would either be a World of Darkness game (and other related books, Vampire, Mage, etc) or it would be a Scion game. I've got copies of almost all the new White Wolf books and I've recently been looking through them again and getting curious.

This is not a recruitment thread, at least not yet, so there's no need to post character builds or anything. I just want to see if there would be any interest in a game and if so which one, Scion or World of Darkness. Maybe I would start something if enough people were interested.

DISCLAIMER
I have run/played D&D/Pathfinder for years. I'm already running and playing in a couple of Pathfinder games both IRL and PBP. However when it comes to White Wolf, I've played a game or two IRL but it's been a while and I've never run it. I say all of this to make sure people understand that if you are interested and I start a game up, it's going to be a pretty rocky ride at least for the beginning till I get my bearings on the White Wolf stuff. I just really like the settings they've designed and would love to create stories/adventures in the world they've envisioned.

The sun baked down overhead as the gentle sound of water sluicing by tried to fool the travelers into thinking that they were simply traveling down a calm river in their homelands. Far from it though, eyes moved steadily along the shoreline and across the water, always alert and never resting on anything for more than a minute.

It was easy to want to get lost in the wild beauty of the Expanse but that was the first and last mistake many tourists made to these lands. As if to punctuate that point, a load roar followed by an equally loud squeal of pain suddenly echoed from somewhere in the dense greenery that hugged the shoreline up to the water’s edge.

Yet still the smooth motion of the canoes as they glided along allowed the mind to drift, to remember how you ended up here in the middle of the jungle.

---------------------------------------------

You all recognized each other, if not by sight then certainly by reputation. Strong willed individuals, each capable and daring in your own right. You all answered the same call, although your reasons might be vastly different for doing so. So here you were, waiting in a lush suite of rooms for your benefactor and patron.

After a moment the door to the parlor opened and a young man came in followed by a statuesque woman in red leather. The man looked at you all quite excitedly as he pushed his glasses back up on to his nose, his finger leaving behind a smudge of ink on the bridge of his nose. Well dressed and clean, this man had scholar written all over him and as he sat, you could practically smell the dust puff off of him from hours spent in a library.

The woman in red moved behind him and took up a position behind his chair, arms crossed beneath a rather impressive chest. Yet none of you could take your eyes from her face despite this. It wasn’t the beauty of her eyes or the appeal of her looks, but the cold, raw determination behind them. There wasn’t a weapon about her yet it was clearl that this woman was a merciless, hardened killer. The way she moved, the manner in which she held herself behind the scholar; not quite relaxing, looking like she was just on the edge of violence and only needed a small breeze to push her to it.

Patting her leg off-handedly, the spectacled man spoke, his voice exactly as you expect, slightly nasal in pitch. Don’t mind Selinda. She’s just overly cautious. Rightly so, in these dangerous lands of course. My name is Philos Sacrin. Doubtless you’re all eager to get to business.

He leans forward and looks at each of you in turn. I put out the word looking for adventurous types such as yourselves because I am looking to expand my fields of study to the wonders and treasures of the Mwangi Expanse. What I study is everything. History, nature, magic, and other such wonders as few only imagine. The Expanse holds these things and more. However I am not what you would call a field man myself. Thus I am looking for able bodied souls such as yourselves to brave the wilds for me.

Philos sits back in his seat, his clearly rehearsed speech finished. Of course you all have your various reasons for wanting to take part in this but I imagine the gold is what you’re looking towards most. There will be plenty of it for those whom make the cut, if you do. For now consider this a … trial period. I would like for you to find the Golden Idol of Poztequlias for me. This will be no small task I ask but should you prove capable, you will have earned a spot in my employ and all the privilege that entails.

Philos jumps up suddenly and begins to hustle towards the door. There’s so much to do and so little time. Of course isn’t that always the case. Selinda will be in touch and ensure you have the necessary details to begin your trek. And with that he exits the room, leaving you there to ponder your thoughts.

-------------------------------------------

A loud commotion startles you out of your reverie. At the far edge of the river there is a thunderous sound as the water at the river’s edge churns. The struggle lasts but moments and the current has already pulled you further down the river when you see the scaled coils of an enormous snake rotate slowly out of the water. Just before you pass around a bend in the river, you can see a head the size of a man come out of the water and stare silently after you before its jaws unhinge and it begins to eat its meal.

Suddenly the task ahead of you seems all the more real and the weight of the gold in your pouches suddenly doesn’t seem as important as it had when you left.

Thus it begins! You are currently traveling down a large river through the thick of the jungle. You’ve been traveling for about 3 days now and are far from the graces of civilization. You are in 3 large canoes, each one carrying 2 of you plus 2 local porters. You have a rough map to the ruins that are purported to hold the Idol, more a list of landmarks than real directions.

You clearly all know each other by this time but only just, so feel free to introduce yourselves and get a feel for everyone. I will get things “moving” soon.

Here's the OOC thread for the game. Pretty self explanatory. Please introduce yourselves and discuss any ideas you might have, how you envision your rolls being within the party, etc.

I'm looking for hearty adventurers ready to brave the wilds of the lost jungles. Cowards need not apply!

I'm still hashing out the specifics of this game currently, as far as the who's and why's, but the bare bones of the campaign is that I'm looking for a party of brave adventurers willing to brave the wilds of the Mwangi Expanse to obtain all of the treasures and relics hidden within. There will be intrigue, danger, adventure, horror, and every other type of thing I can throw at you, up to and including the kitchen sink.

The premise is that the PC's are a group of established adventurers hired to brave the Mwangi Expanse. Who hired you, what you're exactly looking for, and other details are still in the works but its enough to know that the campaign will be set largely, if not solely, in the Expanse so plan accordingly.

I'm looking for 4-6 PC's of 6th level with the following:
- An interesting backstory that catches the attention. Excellent builds won't inmpress me without a cool concept to attach them to.
- 20 point ability buy per the core book.
- Standard core races only. (I might make an exception if I'm really wowed by a concept but just note you'll be starting at a disadvantage in the selection process.)
- Any material is open from the Core Book, Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic, and Ultimate Combat. (A note. I'm a big fan of the Gunslinger class and the firearm rules in general. However, guns and gunslingers are suitably rare as is standard in Golarion which I also like. To maintain this feel, I will only allow for one character with any levels in the Gunslinger class or any firearms related builds, so other classes with firearm-based feats, etc. This is not a guarantee that a Gunslinger will be accepted, just that if you submit one you understand it should probably be a strong concept to beat out any others.)
- Max HP for ALL levels. (I want to be able to throw some really nasty stuff your way, should I choose.)
- Starting gold appropriate for 6th level characters. There is no restriction on items based on price. (If you want to blow your entire wad on the Super Longsword of Ultimate Awesome while leaving yourself no funds for food, shelter, armor, etc, then by all means, knock yourself out. :-) Just understand that it's on you when you're wishing you hadn't.)
- I'm looking for a balanced party, at least within reason. This is not to say that I won't accept 2 wizards or something if the concepts really call to me, just note that if a bunch of casters are applying, you might do well to submit a martial character.

Lastly, I don't need a fully fleshed out character sheet and separate profile for your submission unless you feel like putting one together. Just the basics so I have an idea (stats, feats, archetypes/abilities, rough idea of skills, etc). You can flesh it all out with crunch and gear purchases and whole new alias if/when accepted. I personally can understand how it can be frustrating to put in all that work and then not be picked. I can always ask for more details if I need them so no worries.

Well this is a daunting post and I hope I didn't lose any of you on the way. I look forward to seeing your submissions and running a (hopefully) sweet campaign for some of you. Good luck to you all.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass leaving memories that become legend, then fade to myth, and are long forgot when that Age comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose across the Aryth Ocean. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

The wind gusted across storm tossed whitecaps, driving forward past schools of fish. On it blew, eventually making landfall amidst an armada of strange ships nestled in the harbors of Falme. It flowed through the streets, past strangely dressed people and even stranger creatures, blowing out banners and flags of a conquering army.

Further south and east it blew, stirring smoke and fires in the hotly contested fields of the Almoth Plain. Men and beasts huddled closer against the chill the wind carried, many hardly hiding their concerns about the unnatural weather that has gripped the land for so long.

The wind swirled down the small road, scattering leaves and some small snowflakes across the path of an eclectic group of travelers. Clutching cloaks tightly around themselves, they plod on, looking forward to arriving in the next town and putting themselves in front of a warm fire.

So this is the OOC thread for Prophecies of the Dragon. Please post any comments using your character alias for the game.

I hope to have the game thread itself up by the end of the evening but ultimately we'll be getting started sometime this weekend so just make sure your characters are built and approved by Sunday night. If I get the thread up sooner and your character is not quite finished that's fine, it's not an immediate "your in combat" situation. But by Sunday I'll want everyone ready to go.

As most of you probably noticed, I post pretty excessively during the week but the trade off is that my weekends are always gonna be random. I'm usually good for at least once or twice during the weekend but there's no way to tell my schedule. This is why my posting expectation is minimum once a day Mon-Fri but there is a certain amount of leeway with the weekends.

If you guys have any questions or want clarificaiton on anything please let me know, otherwise let me know when your character sheets are done and I'll let you know when we're getting started.

Huzzah!

Hi All,

I am looking to run the Prophecies of the Dragon module using the Wheel of Time RPG. It's been some time since this system was released but I am hoping to get a few interested parties in this. I am looking to have between 4-6 players, the final number depending on how many interested people apply and the concepts that are submitted.

Just to put this out there, I am an experienced gamer on both sides of the screen but this will be my first time running a PbP on these specific forums. I've run and played games on other sites that went well enough but I justed wanted people to know ahead of time.

4) The Prophecies of the Dragon module is set during the timeline of the first 6 novels, the story basically running parellel to the main characters of the novels. This is important to note as it does kind of dictate certain aspects of the game and character concept. There will be no Seanchan characters allowed. Aiel characters will need a good backstory explanation. Things of this nature. I will of course answer any questions people have about character ideas. This ultimately relates to the last and key point.

Max HP to start.

- You do not need to submit your actual character build/mechanics when applying, you may wait till you are accepted if you'd like. There will be no preference shown to people who submit both instead of just the backstory. Looking for concept initially.

Thanks for showing an interest and I hope to be playing with some of you very soon.

Hi all. I just wanted to find out if people have run the final confrontation in TotB yet and if so how it went. Or if not, just people's overall opinions/ideas about it. I've read through the book and given all the details involved in the final encounter, I'm really concerned that I'll be looking at either a TPK or the surviving PC's deciding they're better off not worrying about this and that's the end of the AP.

People have already mentioned a lot of the basic concerns inherent when dealing with a golem, Adamantine DR and Immunity to magic being the biggest. Even ignoring this, which is a huge factor of it's own to deal with, the other big concern to me is the tactical situation, at least as I see it. Based on the maps and description, the party will be facing a Huge sized creature with 15ft reach in a chamber that looks no more than 25ft across at the longest. It seems upon initial inspection that so long as the big bad parks it in the middle of the room, anyone other than a melee fighter is gonna provoke an AoO against a creature that has paralyzing tentacles with the Grab ability for anything they do. So even getting up to the top of the tower to call the Beast for help is gonna be near impossible if they get an AoO for climbing the dang ladder.

So on the one hand, I'm looking for advice to possibly help better equip my group, either tactically or with hints, knowledge etc. I mean I could just drop a bunch Adamantine loot and let them slug it out but that is a bit of a cop-out and still doesn't really keep them from being crammed into a small space with a (literal) Huge problem.

Any comments would be appreciated.
