The young monk nods in understanding, his hand staying as steady as possible to not cause undue stress in Vai before her turn in the event.

"Well, that would explain the presence of both age groups here together, then," he says, sparing a look about the SIM Room and assessing the other various competitors. "An ingenious way to accommodate everyone wanting to participate." (^-^)

Vai blinks as a butterfly pops on her nose, then she sneezes into her armpit after the ticklish sensation, breaking the tender hand-holding. She rubs her nose afterwards and giggles a little.

"Why don't you try? You shouldn't have to worry too much here in the SIM rooms, right?" Vai offers happily.

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

Vai can't help but smirk a tiny bit at that. "Lectures are a Sunwake specialty I'll have you know. Somewhat out of necessesity, since we are a stubborn family. I'm sure you'll be inured to them soon enough don't worry."

As their hands sit gently touching, Vai's wings ever-so-slightly and slowly begin to unfurl and flare outward, a subtle sign of tension. Vai does not move to break the contact, at least not yet.

"It's an obstacle course of some sort. From what I understand the SIM rooms will dynamically adjust the course's difficulty based on the participant's PE performance and other metrics. So really we're going to be competing against ourselves, which makes me wanna win even more!" she seems in a pretty good mood, smiling up at Fei.

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

"Do you want to talk about it?" Vai asks tenderly, offering a hand if Fei would like to take it. She looks around at their surroundings and says a little more quietly. "We can go to a more private place if that would help?"

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

Vai shakes her head in response to Fei and her own smile falters a little. "I'm also sorry for missing the past few mornings at the dawn. I... Feel restless and worried about Lumos and I'm sorry cause now I feel like I'm not being there for you when you need me."

There is definitely a spot of colour on her cheeks from Fei's encouragement.

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

Vai's pacing comes to a sudden end as she turns and spots the dawn-coloured gi and perfect form of her meldanya, and her wings twitch ever so slightly in excitement and her own distracted visage breaks into a bright smile of her own.

Vai breaks into a light jog and gives one powerful flap of her leathery blue wings in time with a push off from the ground, sending her gliding through the air to land gently in front of Fei. Her hair flutters in the wind, settling in it's usual place across one eye only to be brushed back behind an ear.

While recent events surrounding the Champions are troubling to say the least, including the fact that Vai remains herself a Champion, that doesn't stop her from beaming at Fei. "Good morning." she says quietly, just for the pair, despite the gathering student body in the stands and for the competition. "I thought you weren't going to come?"

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

Vai alights gently, with her blue wings in full view emerging from her back. She's dressed athletically, forgoing the Avalon skirt in favour of pants for the competition. She paces back and forth, restlessly.

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

Vai was definitely inspired by many many hours playing Legend of Dragoon.

Looking up at her, the young girl actually shies away slightly from Vai, and covers her eyes with arm. "Wow, you are really bright, it kinda hurts my eyes." She says in a plaintive voice.

There's an almost imperceptible moment where Vai's expression darkens, but it is quickly replaced by concern. "Sorry." Vai replies warmly, "But you should probably get used to seeing Auras. Just wait until you meet Enr..." Vai is cut off by a sudden lump forming in her throat and tears in eyes. She clears her throat and blinks away the tears, that one sweep of hair blocking one eye completely now. "Nevermind. How's your knee?"

As Vai was wandering the halls, a young, pale skinned firebird suddenly falls from the shadows clinging to the ceiling. *If* there wouldn't be any shadows(for whatever reason), then they are spontaneously created and disappear shortly thereafter.

"Oh, ouch! Dang it this is hard!" She says aloud, though obviously to herself. A shifting aura of deep purples, midnight blues, and darkest blacks surrounds her, and Vai knows she's looking at the new Champion of Darkness.

She doesn't stand up right away, opting to sit on the floor, and rub her knee which bears a noticeable bruise.

Vai's immediate reaction is to jump backwards, her wings sprouting wide from her back before she realizes exactly what's going on...

"Freaking seriously?!" she mutters under her breath as she takes in the aura around the other student.

Once her heartrate steadied out a bit, Vai's wings fold back into herself and she walks over to Serrin, bending down next to her. A bit of hair trails down from Vai's bangs to hide one of her eyes. "Are you alright?"

Serrin can see Vai surrounded by a bright and beautiful Aura of Light.

Vai sits placidly on an cliff edge somewhere within the school. Deep breaths in, and out. The chill mountain air permeates her form, her senses sharp and active, as she struggles to keep her mind blank.

Fei was off having fun at some elven festival. Ace too. Phaeze was undergoing another transformation. Nasima was hopefully safe, wherever she was. Sadie and her were never really the same, even if they refused to admit that to themselves. The family was busy with various projects. Her birth parents needed to be avoided. The eggs were too much to worry about at this moment. Keme continued to be an ass.

Those were all good excuses to be hiding in here, right?

Vai opens her eyes and looks out over Sifu Daiyu's view. The lovely mountain air. Where she first discovered the joy of flight and finally started accepting that she could be happy once again.

...

The specter of Lumos hung dark in her mind. That was the real reason she was here. She wanted to DO something, but there wasn't anything to do. Fei had said the other Vai wasn't a problem anymore, and she believed him. And Lumos had not selected a new champion when... when she had a chance to.

"Arrg!" Vai cries in frustration, standing as she does and breaking the perfect stillness with her voice. "That's it!"

Vai turns and stomps out of the room. She didn't know where she was headed, but going in circles in her own head was not helping in the slightest.

Phaezeriel wrote:

Phaezeriel looks at Vai, and though his silver eyes make reading his facial expressions more difficult, long practice shows Vai that there is a profound, remembered pain in Phaezeriel that does not echo into his thoughts, ::It is. It is a lonely and dark place. The only thing that there is to keep you going is your own convictions; doing what you think it right. Until you find the people that can be trusted to not simply use you. To someone who has lived without the possibility of friendship for any length of time, a true friend is of incalculable importance.::

Though he does not need to stop talking while he eats, Phaezeriel pauses to take a bite, chew, and swallow before continuing, ::But you have to be able to accept that another might not be manipulating you, might actually be your friend. If you cannot encompass that possibility with your mind, there is little hope of finding someone like that. I had never thought of the Patrons as possibly being lonely. Do you think they really are?::

Vai scoots a little closer to her demonic friend and gives him a warm smile. Tentatively, she puts an arm around his tiny form. Phaeze can feel her shiver ever so slightly.

"I don't know if they really are. Just a thought I had I guess. Maybe it's even what Lumos wants me to think. Can't let that stop me for feeling bad for them."

She sighs and pulls Phaeze a little closer. "I don't know if there's a way to help them though. They're stuck in this war. How can we fix something like that?"

Phaezeriel wrote:

Phaezeriel grins at Vai, ::It's always good to have quiet time. I know how that can be sometimes. I just wanted to make sure my first real friend was okay.::

Vai seems to hesitate for a good, long moment of silence before continuing. "Is it wrong that I kinda feel bad for Lumos?" she blurts.

Not even giving Phaezeriel a chance to respond, she carries on in a rush: "I mean, that game that the patrons play, that's their whole life. Their whole existance. They never get to trust anyone, they never know who is their friend and who is manipulating them. Their whole life is being afraid they'll end up on the losing end."

There's another long silence as Vai bows her head a little, some hair coming free to fall in front of her face. The hum of the nursery machinery almost swallows what she whispers. "That sounds like a horrible and pitiful existance to me."

Phaezeriel wrote:

Phaezeriel shrugs a little, ::I dunno. You all certainly seem to think so. And far be it from me to argue with dragons.:: His smile shows the joke for what it is.

He turns to face her fully after a moment, and his thoughts are serious when they come again, ::You don't have to answer if you don't want to: But why are you spending so much time alone lately?::

The smile weakens just a little bit. "Just... been a bit thoughtful, I guess. Lumos has been quiet, and I think she knows I was serious about my threat. But I dunno. It's just easy to be alone, I guess."

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7
Phaezeriel wrote:

Phaezeriel laughs silently, ::Or having friends at all. And being trusted to this extent.:: He makes a broad gesture that takes in the entire chamber.

Vai idly wonders if her family just has a thing for demons. It would explain Ephebe. And Kam.

And James.

The barely repressed smile breaks into a full one at her internal joke, and her voice is full of mirth. "Well, I mean, you earned it, right?"

The light in the room catches and glints off of the jewel still hanging around Vai's neck. Her cheerfulness almost seeming in stark defiance of what that jewel represents.

I know it shouldn't be, but sometimes I just get struck with the surrealness of it, y'know?"
Phaezeriel nods in agreement, ::I understand entirely. Sometimes the things we encounter in the course of our lives are so utterly alien to what we expect that even though we live through them, they seem to be impossible. Something along those line?::

Vai giggles at that. "That's probably a few more words than I would've used."

"Like having a demon for a friend, right? That'd be super weird." She says with a barely hidden smile.

Vai tenses slightly as the door opens, but smiles and relaxes as Phaeze comes into view. A glint of light catches and shines through the diamond still about her neck.

"Thanks, Phaeze." she says warmly, already salivating a bit at the smell of the food wafting through the room. "I appreciate it. You should come in. Eggs aren't great company, though I'm sure I'll regret saying that once they hatch."

She glances down at the textbook in her lap - Algebraic Geometry, and quickly sets it aside. "Not getting far with this right now anyway."

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

Seeking a quiet space, Vai has sequestered herself in the family nursery, quietly watching over her future nieces and nephews, absently flicking through a textbook.

He watches her for a moment.
"Does Light still claim you?" he asks bluntly.

Vai's fingers come to rest on a small bump under her clothes. A few moments of fishing later, the glorious diamond that marks Vai's championship is seen pulled forth, still about her neck. Her focus tightens intensely on the jewelry.

"No. She doesn't." Vai says forcefully, cold fury traced in every line of her face, the earlier confusion gone completely. The anger boils near the surface for a moment before it erupts, manifesting in a hoarse scream.

"DO YOU HEAR ME LUMOS?! YOU HAVE NO CLAIM ON ME!" Vai's wings spread wide at she shouts, blue scales rippling down her body before quickly reverting to her pink flesh.

There a few sharp breaths, and tears brimming in Vai's eyes when she continues, her voice just as hoarse but much quieter. "You already learned what happens when you try to force me. And I will die a thousand times over before I let you use me to hurt those I love. So you are playing by my rules now."

There's a pause and more sharp intakes of breath from Vai before she finally releases the tension and breathes more normally. Once she realizes that Krays witnessed that, she even manages a blush. "Heh, sorry. Give me a minute and then we can go see Mom and Dad."

At Krays' reassurance that she would barely notice the time passing, Vai just nods. "Can.. can you tell the family that I love them? Fei too? And... the rest of my friends. Sadie and Phaeze and Keme and Mel and Ace and Adon and Belyu and..."

She blinks, pausing a moment. "Wow, I have alot of friends. I guess it would be too much to tell everyone."

"I'll see you soon Krays." she says again, hugging him tightly despite their spiritual state.

On the ethereal plane, Vai's spirit slowly coalesces, her spirit unmarred by the wound on her body. Interestingly, Krays may note that while her spirit is in it's half-elven form, her draconic wings are still present. Given manifestations of this nature are completely based on the spirit's subconscious, Vai must consider this her most 'natural' state.

She looks extremely confused as she looks around at the misty half-reality of the ethereal plane. "Krays?" her voice has a strange, echo-y quality. "I... I was just talking with Knowledge. What's going on?"

Her face betrays no emotion of fear or shock, and in her current position no wound is visible on her form, though the slowly pooling blood around her head - and the lack of the steady rise of fall of breathing - dashes the brief hope that she's merely unconscious.

Tamrin's extra sensors reveal nothing extra about Vai, though she is slowly bleeding heat away as her body begins to cool post-mortem.

Oddly, clutched to her chest is a leather-bound tome of some kind.

After a few minutes of wallowing, Vai's hand twitched slightly and there was a curious crinkling noise. Curiosity pierced through pain, and Vai looked down to see a piece of paper in her hand. A piece of paper that hadn't been there during her conversation with Lumos.

She carefully unfolded it, reading the note. Her eyes widened sharply and she gasped. Her Mom might be mad... but Lumos would be able to interfere with her nanite treatment anyway. This might be another option. She just had to act, and quickly...

Vai tore out her IV drip, wincing at the pain and the angry beep from the monitors, dropping the note on the bed, and casting a teleportation spell, not using her Champion ability, but instead her own power, to teleport out of the room...

The note, forgotten in her haste, rests on the bed. It reads:

Note:

""I know your pain and offer a solution. Meet me off of school grounds, by the wall of the west side gardens, and I shall get you out of your Championship."

Vai was unresponsive for a long while, her sobs going from gentle to violent as her body tried to forcefully expel the pain that had curled around Vai's heart.

By the time she'd cried herself out, Vai wasn't sure if Lumos was still there or not, but she whispered quietly, mostly for her own benefit. "You won't break me. Aegythrax didn't break me, and neither will you."

Female Half-elf Gestalt Sorcerer6/Dragon Disciple9 // Rogue (Swashbuckler)8/Duelist7

It was like someone had punched her in the gut. Vai couldn't breathe, curling slightly into herself on the infirmary bed. She was caught again by a force more powerful than herself. It was somehow worse now... Aegythrax had abused her body and mind... But Lumos was going to use her own love to hurt the very people she cared for.

She couldn't even tell anyone. Lumos would just make her black out with pain if she tried. She wouldn't even be able to kill herself to free her family...

"Why are you doing this? You are Light itself. You should be better than this." Vai whispered, the pain in her heart forcing her to curl up on her side, as tears slowly wet her pillow.

"Time was already with us!" Vai snapped back, her anger flaring. "Maybe you don't really get it Lumos, but Fei and Krays and Ephebe and I are kinda a package deal, and if you..." a sudden chill chose that moment to rush through her veins, calming her anger instantenously as she had a horrible revelation. A tear formed in her eye...

"Lathander help me... I'm... I'm going to be blackmail. Even if we beat the other me... They won't hurt you cause they would have to hurt me..."

Laying in the infirmary bed, Vai twitched slightly, slowly opening her eyes. She still felt exhausted and sore. Healing magic and nanites only worked so far and so fast, especially given the limited resources in the wake of the attack.

She forced her eyes open though, staring up at the ceiling, listening to the slow beep of equipment attached to her.

Even the act of holding her eyes open for long was somewhat exhausting so she closed them once again.

"Lumos, let's talk." she whispered quietly to the empty room.

Fei's experience as a healer tells him that these injuries are likely not meant to life-threatening. They would, however, be extremely painful, as evidenced by Vai's unconscious state. Further, as his healing energies flow into his meldanya, he notes that she /is/ in fact healing, though at a greatly reduced rate than would be expected for the effort and energy he is pouring into her. This is different than what Esperanza did to Keme, though the similarities are glaringly obvious.
