Background:

Urgtahn was born to the tribe of the Black Snakes by one of the human female captives held by the tribe. His mother did not survive very long after his birth. His father was unknown to him as his mother had been taken by most of the tribe.

As a half-orc, he was subjected to back breaking labor from a young age and was treated particularly harshly by the full orcs of the tribe. During a particularly brutal attack, he started speaking in a guttural grinding tongue at his attackers as he fought back with skill beyond his years. After he had dealt with the orcs who had attacked him, Urgtahn was brought to the Shaman of the tribe, Thertak Snaketooth, so named for his tusks that he had sharpened into the fangs like those of a snake.

Thertak examined the young half orc and performed blood rituals to determine the nature of the Urgtahn’s sudden outburst. After the rite’s he stated that he would take the boy on as an apprentice.

The apprenticeship was harder on Urgtahn than the labor he had been forced to do beforehand. It did however afford him some protection from the young orcs who had tormented him previously. He was forced to be undergo rituals that involved multiple lacerations and having the wounds cauterised by white hot metals. He was told he was to become a shaman of the tribe which meant he had to go through these tests to prove his devotion to Gorum. Thertak told Urgtahn that he had divined that Urgtahn had been chosen by the Lord in Iron to become a great warrior.

When Thertak believed that Urgtahn’s training was complete, he was initiated into the Black Snake tribe. He was tattooed with the symbol of the tribe on his chest, back and right arm, two intertwined black snakes. He was granted the right to call himself one of the Black Snakes and was presented with a greatsword for the battles he would fight for the tribe from then on.

In battle, he found he lost his ability to speak, instead screaming warcries in the same guttural grinding tongue he had spoken in before. However, he waded in with his sword and whatever stood before him would fall. He fought against humans, orcs and any other that his Chief would declare an enemy. The thrill of battle filled him with pleasure and the years of discipline seemed worth every second as he cut through his enemies.

He soon found himself sitting in meetings with his chief, Chief Logruk Black Snakes, Thertak and the tribes elders as they planned raids and wars. As he became accepted as Thertak’s second and the one who would become the tribe’s shaman, Urgtahn took pride in himself and his blessings from Gorum. He came to care about those who tormented him in his youth as Thertak explained that he was to be the one to guide them and their Chief. He proved his mettle in battle time and again and earned the respect of his fellow tribesmen time and again.

It was during one of the meetings with the elders that it was announced they would ally under the Rusted Claw banner, for they were planning a great assault on the Foundry of the Steel Eaters. Urgtahn thought this was a risky plan, but knew that it would bring his tribe great fame among the other tribes in the Hold.

As the two tribes camped together on their first night, Chief Arngrak Rusted Claw ordered the execution of all Black Snakes. If it weren’t for a vision from what Urgtahn believes was Gorum himself, Urgtahn would have lay slain along with the rest of his tribesmen. However, a vision of death and fury woke Urgtahn in the middle of the night, he heard the first cry as he got up off of his bedroll.

The scene he saw as he grabbed his sword and left his tent incited a burning rage within Urgtahn. The blood of his fellow tribesmen spilled across the campsite, Rusted Claws butchering Black Snakes as they tried to get up and gather themselves.

Urgtahn raced to his chieftan’s tent, but the mighty Logruk Black Snakes lay in his hammock, his head severed. Urgtahn made to leave the camp. All that he had worked for had been taken from him and he was no fool, he knew he could not stand against the Rusted Claw by himself. He cut down any who stood in his way and fled.

He began stalking the Rusted Claw tribe, taking out scouting parties. He managed to loot some armor, weapons and supplies from the scouts he took out, which although they appeared a little worse for wear, fit quite well and with some polish and care turned out to be quite well made.

During his final strike against the Rusted Claw, he was ambushed by more Rusted Claws lying in wait. He had been foolish and was now to die as a result of this. As he was knocked into oblivion, he heard “Let’s take him to Arngrak.”

When he woke, he was surprised to see the face of a human looking over him. “He’s up!” the woman called out. He noticed a symbol dangling around her neck, a sword plunged into a mountain.

“Gorum?” he managed to sputter.

“Yes, I follow the Lord in Iron, like you it would seem. Who are you?” the woman asked.

“I am Urgtahn. Why am I here?” Urgtahn half asked, half wondered aloud.

The woman told him of her group and their goal, to get to Lastwall to assist in holding Vigil. She introduced herself as Anera and her companions, another human Gunther, an elven wizard, Yeramos, and a halfling, Pensain. They had travelled from Tranau and found a group of orcs dragging what was clearly a holy man of Gorum along with them.

She told him of how they had dealt with the orcs and sought to find out about their prisoner. She then asked him about himself and he told her of his dedication to Gorum, realising that focusing on his tribe may get him killed. He told her of how he had been hunting the Rusted Claw tribe because they had killed what he told them was his family.

They sympathised with him and suggested that there would be those in Lastwall who would be willing to fight against the orcish horde.

Urgtahn decided to stay with these people who had saved his life. The way he was treated by them somewhat shocked him. He found that they were not prejudiced against him and were actually happy to have him around. Anera revealed a different take on the worship of Gorum which intrigued him. Far from the rituals of bonding with iron Thertak had taught him, Anera taught him of making the presence of Gorum known by constructing shrines of his opponents weaponry and revelling in victory as well as in the battle itself. Yeramos informed him that the language he spoke in battle was in fact Terran, the language of the earth.

With his desire for revenge growing, Urgtahn decided that he would join these enemies of the orcish hordes to satiate his revenge and bring him the pleasure of partaking in battle that his heart desired.

Character Description:

Urgtan is a heavily muscled Half-Orc from the backbreaking labour he carried out which was toned through years of battle. He maintains a shaved head and he wears no armor over his right upper arm to display the tattoo of his former tribe.

In battle, Urgtahn cuts an imposing figure, his head held high and the metal of his armor covering his body. The sound of his roar startles and confuses his opponents.

Personality:

Urgtahn acts with pride that he has not lost. He is often short with people though will open up on discussions about the Rusted Claw tribe and Gorum.

He appreciates those who prove themselves in battle and those who work to better the lives of those around them. He believes in the importance of working together to make each other strong and believes that those who are strongest deserve power.

He has little time for bureaucracy, believing that decisions should be made by leaders to prove their ability to lead and those below them should follow.

Motivations and Goals:

Urgtahn’s primary motivation is killing Arngrak Rusted Claw.

He is also driven by his devotion to Gorum and he is intrigued by the people who welcomed him among them. He has no love for the other Orc tribes of the Hold of Belkzen and is intrigued by those who wish to claim back the lands of Lastwall.
