Here's a question from one of my players (an Oracle). Having no previous experience with this spell (first I hear of it, lol), I'm asking the community for some help on answering him... "According to the spell elemental body, I need to know which aspects of a fire elemental I take, it'll be really important for me in a few levels; I know I get all the physical aspects, like fire immunity, burn ability and size, but what about skills, feats, stats, base attack and saves? Do I keep my own hit points? Can I still cast spells?" And that's pretty much it... Thanks gang. Ultradan Hey gang, I have a question for those familiar with the scenario... I started my Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign yesterday, and something hit me mid-game... I was wondering when, exactly, does the Senechal of Castle Korvosa dissapear? When does he go missing, and when do the players know about this? Is there a specific place in the first or second books that reveal this at some point? Thanks Ultradan Hey folks, We're starting Curse of the Crimson Throne next month and the guys wanted to play a game of "something else" in the meantime, so I'm throwing them all in the meat grinder of Call of Cthulhu! I've had all these books in my library and I've been sitting on them waiting for this day, lol. Of course, I chose to have them do one of the short scenarios since we're just gonna play one day of it. (I won't say which, because I know some of the players lurk around here sometimes, haha)... In my prep for this game though, I found a real pleasure in researching old 1920s documents and photos on the net to use as hand outs and such... A real work of archeology (I actually felt like an investigator myself!). It's incredible what you can find on the web that you can use as game material... From actual dated maps, to restaurant menus, to pictures of places and things, all of which existed at that time and place where the scenario happens. I've GOT to do these more often... Ultradan Hi guys, Say an archer and a wizard are standing 60' away from each other at the start of the fight... The initiative is rolled and the archer wins it. He decides to ready an attack with his bow, as to fire at the wizard at the first sign of casting (presumably to distract the wizard and scuttle his spell). The wizard casts a quickened fireball. What happens first? The readied action, or the quickened spell? Is there a written rule about this? I just want to get my things straight before this situation happens to me tomorrow during the game. Thanks guys. Ultradan Am I getting this right? Whail of the banshee: 10hp of damage per level (no cap?). So if a wizard, say a certain BBEG, who's CL22 casts this, he 's doing 220 hp of damage to each of the 22 people (1 person per level) it can affect? That seems like a lot of carnage. Sound wrong for some reason. Ultradan Wasn't there a movie made a few years ago in which they reversed the roles of white and black people in it... I think the story was about a white family living in a mostly black America, where the TV news folks were black, the rich celeberties were black, even the dolls and action figures in the stores were black. It was a complete role-reversal if you will... To show the rediculousness of it all. I'm trying to find the title of the film but can't come up with anything on the net. (Did I imagine this film? lol) I'm doing a research for work, on racisme and stereotypes. Ultradan Yeah, this is an easy question... (I'm have a mind blank right now, lol) Say your PC wears a cloak that gives you +3 on all saves. Then puts on a ring that gives you +2 on all saves. Do they stack? (giving you a +5 on all saves) Or does just the highest one function? (Just giving you the +3 on all saves? Ultradan Hi Paizo, Nothing unusual to report except for the great service that your staff provides us with! Seriously, all of you; Your hard work does not go unnoticed. I think I can speak for all of us by saying that we appreciate every effort you guys put in everything you do. 10 outta 10. (Big round of applause!) Thanks. Ultradan Hi folks, I have a player in my game who has a character practically no monster of mine can hit. He's practically a walking tank. Mind you, we're approaching the end of an adventure path so the PCs are all like 16th-17th level, so it's quite normal for them to have strong characters. I'm just looking for a way to make that PC a little more 'hittable' so I may rough him up a little in the final few battles. I know if I hit him with something like a SLOW spell, the wizard of the group will automatically dispell it on the next round... So how would you guys go about it, without making it look too much like you did it on purpose? (I don't want to kill the guy, but having him practically walk through the final chapters of the Adventure Path unscathed would be quite an anti-climax...) Thanks! Ultradan A quick question about wilderness travel and random encounters... My group is starting their expedition to the fabled city of Xin-Shalast in the last Rise of the Runelords campaign. I'm using the 'plateau' random encounter tables for the trip across the Storval Plateau and was wondering just how often do I roll for an encounter? For the Kodar region, there's an encounter table in the last book saying once per day and once per night, with a 15% chance in each, should I use this? Or is it more likely to encounter something in the Plateau than in the mountains? Is there a standard roll for chance encounters in the wilderness, be it in the forests or hills, or mountains? Ultradan Hello Paizo, Would it be possible to hold my next adventure path subscription orders of late july (i.e.: make sure not to charge me) before july 28th. I've had an unforseen incident (you know, when you own a house...) which has left my credit card in pretty bad shape. Everything will be back to normal after the 28th though. Thanks! Ultradan Ahoy great minds of the messageboards... I'm looking at the magic items section and the creation of these items and something isn't quite clear to me. I wonder y'all can help... Say you want to create a +2 Belt of Giant Strength: You would first need the 'Craft Wondrous Item' feat that you can get at 3rd level. Then you would need the spell 'Bull's Strength' (that you can also get at 3rd level). Then spend 2000gp. Work for 2 days, then roll a spellcraft (DC8) and voilà! My problem is this... Now say you want to create a +6 Belt of Giant Stregth: Same Feat, same spell, but you pay 18000gp (you just happen apon a huge ruby on your first adventure), work 18 days then roll that same DC8 spellcraft... Apart from the cost, shouldn't it be harder to create a +6 ability enhancing item than a +2 item? Am I missing something here? (If so point me to a page!! I'm going nuts here! lol) Ultradan Hey folks, I'll admit it... I've NEVER bought anything from Amazon. In fact, the only place I ever bought something online is right here at Paizo. Given my lack of knowledge about online purchasing, I have a few questions about it, and I know all of you guys will surely clarify everything for me. Say I want to buy a particular music CD. I check for it online at my local big chain music stores and find that it's NOWHERE to be found as it it a discontinued item. After more reasearch, if find that they have like eight copies for sale... My question is... Where do these CDs come from if I purchase one? Is AMAZON a wearhouse/store with a zillions things in it? Is it safe to buy there? Thanks folks. Ultradan Just for your info, Post Canada are talking of possibly going on strike on May 25 2011. If this happens, it could create a problem for you canadian clients (like me) who recieve your wonderful merchandise by mail. We will all know for sure on May 22nd, where they will decide if they go through with it or not. I'll keep you posted. Ultradan Hi gang, I was wondering if there already existed a rule, a feat or a skill to "taunt" a foe... Example: Say a fighter and a thief are in close combat with the capitain of the guard in an evil city; The fighter would use this skill/feat to coax the evil dude to use his attacks on him instead of the thief (who would have a much harder time dealing with the hits than the fighter), say 1-5 on d6 instead of a fifty-fifty chance to swing at either player characters. Y'all get what I'm asking? lol Ultradan You know you're playing in a redneck game when... ... Your character's name is BUBBA.
Ultradan I'm lost... lol... I don't usually do this; My players usually determine prices for crafting items). I'm looking at the Scabbard of Keen Edges: CL 5th, PRICE 16000gp, COST 8000gp... Three times per day, it casts Keen Edge on a sword placed within it. Now if I were to try and create a Scabbard of True Strike, with the same effects (three times per day, the scabbard would cast True Strike on a sword placed within it), how would I go about in calculating the price/cost of this item? Is it at all possible? And if it is, what's the right way to do this? I've tried and failed miserably (ending up with what I think are wrong answers). Thanks guys! Ultradan Hey gang, just wanted to let out a sigh of discouragement... I'm at work today, all dressed up as Darth Vader (since it's the last workday before Holloween). I've got the mask, the cape, the gloves, the glowing lightsaber, I'm all dressed in black, and I even got an electronic gizmo that produces Vader's notorious breathing sounds. Nobody knew what I was dressed-up as. And one person asked me if I was Batman. I hate the government. lol Ultradan Hi gang, I ran into something funny during my game today... One of my players was grappling an enemy and decided to choke him. We were on the fence about what rules to use. Either the suffocating rules, which state that a character can go like 1 or 2 rounds PER CONSTITUTION score (i.e.: Forever), or that one simply can't choke another by grappling and can just inflict damage with grapple checks until foe dies or falls unconcious. Anyone have a ruling on this that makes some sort of sense? lol Ultradan Hey folks, I have a question about the intimidation (demoralize) check... In the book it states that you can use this skill to potentially 'shaken' your opponents for a few rounds. Question 1) How long does using this skill in this fashion take? Or, if in combat, does just saying your using it means your using it? Question 2) How many enemies does this include in one roll? Question 3) What's to stop the players (or me, the DM) from starting EVERY battle with this tactic? There doesn't seem to be a downside to using DEMORALIZE... Like if you miss your roll (say, by more than 5), can the enemies actually think your LESS of a threat and gain bonuses? Thanks guys Ultradan The promos looked cool... I was on the fence since the start of this show but, lately, have somewhat lost interest in it. It just seems less and less plausible the more the story moves foreward. The writting kind of reminds me of playing D&D with a bad DM that doesn't prepare his games. The players try stuff, but things never seem to work for them... They want to buy stuff, but no; the merchant's out of THAT item... The group wants to go to THIS town instead of THAT town, but can't because an avalanche blocks the way for now. Sigh. It ain't BAD... But it's definitly not GOOD. Anyone else tried watching this show? Ultradan The massive damage (optional) rule... How many of you use it? I used to (because I liked the idea), but sort of revised my opinion about it in the last game. It seems that now, at level nine, enemies are generating huge hits that go over the 50 hit point mark... My fighter PC was hit twice in the same night and had to roll two times for the massive damage effect (save or die). He succedded both rolls, but as the PCs continue to go up levels, the enemies will too, and so will their damage. So, in my opinion, it's just a matter of time before one of my PCs fails that roll and dies on the spot. Like I said, I like the idea of killing a big creature in just one blow, but if this sort of thing is due to happen on every hit (specialy later), it'll get old real soon. Any thought on this? Ultradan Hey folks, I'm putting a secret chamber for my players to find under Fort Rannick... I was thinking some sort of a vault with a puzzle to get to the goodies. Anyone have any cool ideas? 1) on what kind of goodies could be found in the vault (and why). 2) on what kind of puzzle I could place there. Any thought will be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks! Ultradan Hello Paizo, Last year, I asked you guys to cancell my subscription to the Pathfinder Adventure Paths due do some financial difficulties of mine. I am pleased to say that things are going well here, so I would like to re-activate my subscription. My question is, since my subscription ended in the middle of the Second Darkness series, when I restart it, will the books start comming from where I left off, or do I have to individually add all of them to my shopping cart? And if I have to add them individually, am I better off waiting after I get my first book or can I order them all at once now? (lol, your products are so good that either way, I'm getting them all...) I'm just wondering for the best way to do this. Thanks guys, you all rock! Ultradan Get this, I was raised in Ontario and went to little school there t'ill I was about 11 years old... Then my father found work in Montreal and found myself moving to Quebec on a one-day notice. So in one swift stroke, I lost every friend I ever had and had to start from scratch. I've often wondered what became of my old school buddies from Ontario. Over the years, I tried multiple times to find them; Looking in phone repertoires, sending letters, and when the internet came, even tried to 'google' their names to see if I could find someone, anyone. All to no prevail. The last year, one of my friends talks to me about Facebook. I was reluctant at first, but finally gave it a shot. And on the second day; BANG! I find one of my old schoolmates from way back then. We write each other, we become 'Facebook Friends', and then she tells me that she has another of my old friends in her 'friends list', so I make friends with her too and BANG! Now I've got two. To make a long story short, in the months that followed, I found a total of 19 old school friends out of a class of like 26, and we now talk and exchange regularly. We've even planned a little reunion this week end, and I've jumping off the walls just thinking that I'll finally get to meet these folks again after more than 25 years!! So I'm off to Ontario for the entire weekend to meet with these people that I first met in kindergarden. It's like a dream (for me). Just wanted to share that... Ultradan Have any of you seen this? I've caught the series pilot on YTV this weekend and was pleasantly surprised. It's gritty, pretty serious, and the animation is fairly well made. I think I'll continue watching it. When I first saw the commercial for it a few days ago, I thought to myself "Oh man... They'll screw this up REAL bad."... And I was so afraid they'd mess it up like the new Transformers Cartoon. But no. They really did a great job. Ultradan (the server ate my original post so here's take two...) Hey gang, I usually don't spam people with other sites and stuff, but my friends made me open an account at Facebook (facebook.com) and, well, it's pretty neat. If some of you guys are on there, look me up... I'm Daniel Morency from Montreal. Oh, and if you do decide to look me up, make a post here first and tell me your names (cause I'm not familiar with them) so I can confirm it's one of you wanting to contact me. Daniel 'Ultradan' Morency Does anyone know how fast a character falls? Say a dragon picks up a character in its mouth and brings him up to a few hundred feet, how many rounds does that character have to think of something to get out of his death defying situation? Do we have to actually calculate weight vs. air resistance to get an accurate terminal velocity or is there a simple rule that says that a character falls at THIS many feet per round? Thanks guys. Ultradan Hi guys (and gals), It seems that the PCs get tougher and tougher as they gain more levels. I know, that's the point, but hear me out... As they get tougher, with more hit dice, spells and magic weapons, you (as a DM), must counter this effect by throwing more and more powerful NPCs at your party. Now it gets to a point where you MUST give your NPCs some type of magical stuff of their own to even have a chance to hit your PCs. The problem is, whith the PCs winning mostly every battle, they end up with an incredible amount of magical equipment, which they either keep for them selves, or end up selling to get more powerful items, or even make their own. And by the time they reach higher levels (say above 10th), the PC party is nearly indestructable unless, of course, you throw even tougher bad guys with more powerful magical equipement. And what started as a snowball is now a full grown avalanch that's out of control. Have any of you found a way to counter the snowball effect? What are your thoughts on this? Ultradan I started watching this (Criminal Minds) a few months back, and now I'm hooked. I even bought the first season on DVD to find out what I missed last year... For the most part, I find it well written. The psychopaths are really disturbing and even bone-chilling. The BAU Team (the team of FBI profilers) is really great (superb casting) and interesting. Each episode is self-contained, but as with many other series, there's a background storyline that develops as time goes by. I would highly recommend this TV show to anyone. Ultradan
Oh, great minds of the boards, I need your insight... One of my close friend (a player in my D&D game) is getting married and asked me to be the best man at his wedding. Now as best man, I learned that I have to organize some sort of bachelor party for him before the wedding (this May). Well, I'm at a lost. I need some ideas for a bachelor party (activities/things to do) but I don't want anything degrading or ending up at strip club... I want something neat and fun; Something that'll make him say "woah, I can't believe we've done that"... It could be an activity for a whole day. And I won't say that I have a big buget for this, but don't mind the expense. Have you had any neat experiences for a party you would like to share with me (just to get my ideas flowing)? Ultradan I have a little rules question I need your advice on... Say the team barbarian gets dominated and turns on the other PCs. The team understandably doesn’t want to kill the barbarian, but must stop him somehow. So the team cleric casts a hold person on our barbarian friend to stop him in his tracks, but this won’t stop him for very long… My question: Could another PC fighter use his great sword and do a non-lethal (subdual damage) ‘coup-de-grace’ to attempt to knock the barbarian unconscious in one clean stroke? Ultradan Hello again, Anybody have any idea if there's a rule that covers a rope-swing? One of my players wanted his character to swing from a rope to cross a large open gap in the floor... And everyone just looked puzzled, as no one could recall a rule that covered this... We looked up several skills (Climb, Use Rope, etc) but found nothing. So I declared that a strength check was in order, with a roll of 6 or more granting success, a roll of 2 to 5 resulting that the character missed the opposite ledge and got stuck hanging right over the gap, and a roll of 1 resulting in letting go of the rope and falling into the gap. This roll was modified by encumberance. Any other ideas? Ultradan
