Spoiler:
Ulli Dagmarssen was born in the city of Bildt. Like many of his fellow Ulfmen from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, he was raised to despise the men of the southern lands, viewing them as soft and corrupt. He learned the ways of ships and the sea from the very time he could walk, and the way of the sword and axe came not much behind. As he grew, he earned the nickname 'The Ox' as much due to his disposition as his hulking girth. When he was old enough, he leaped at the chance to go on raiding expeditions against the southern trade vessels that dotted Varisia's western coast. He proved adept at the art of battle, by his 25th year Ulli commanded an Ulfen longship of his own. But these heady days of pillage and plunder could not last.
One fateful day, Ulli's longship boarded a merchant's frigate, as in so many times past. To the Ulfen warriors' chagrin, however, this ship had hired a powerful battle sorcerer as a bodyguard. The fight went poorly for even Ulli's battle-hardened crew, and most were slaughtered under the magical onslaught. Ulli himself was knocked overboard by a magic missile, and left to drown amidst the wreckage of his boat. Clinging to life by a thread, the gods saw fit to spare Ulli's life, as he was spotted by a fishing boat out of Riddleport. The captain of that ship, Harb Whalesong, showed mercy to Dagmar's son, where he himself would have shown none. Harb ordered Ulli pulled aboard, and the northman was taken alive back to Riddleport. This simple act of kindness changed Ulli's whole outlook on life. Today, Ulli frequents the docks of Riddeport, working as a freelance laborer for Harb Whalesong and other captains of fishing vessels. He hauls lumber, mends nets, tars hulls, or does any other job that will net him a few coins. Ulli is far from an upright citizen, though. He is well known as a prodigious drinker and fearsome barroom brawler, and has spent more than one night in a brothel or cooling his heels in a jail cell. He gets by honestly enough with his newfound respect for the southern folk he once hated. But every now and then he thinks back to the days of bloody combat and treasure to be taken, and wonders how long he can continue this ordinary life. He wonders if steady work that pays better might be his ticket to recovering some of his past glory. Description:
Spoiler:
Ulli is a bear of a man, standing 6'5" tall and weighing 275 pounds. His normally pale skin is ruddy from constant exposure to the sun that beats down on Riddleport's docks as he works. His long hair is pale blonde almost to the point of being white, and it makes him look older than his 26 years. Frequently, he braids both his hair and his equally-long beard to keep it out of his way. He dresses in loose, sleeveless tunics, simple roughspun trousers, and sturdy thick-soled boots. Ulli has massive arms and legs like tree-trunks, with a growing ale-belly to match. His front teeth have a tremendous gap that shows when he smiles, as he often does. His nose is crooked from being broken on more than one occasion, and he has a number of scars on his arms and chest. When outfitted to shed blood, he dons a battered shirt of scale mail, and slings his razor-sharp greataxe over his shoulder.
Ulli loves fighting, drinking, working, singing, laughing, and women...not necessarily in that order. He frequents any number taverns in Riddleport's Wharf District, and he has many friends there. He is loud and boisterous, quick to laugh and quick to make a jest. However, he is also quick to take offense as more than one poor local tough has learned the hard way. In a fight, Ulli is utterly serious and completely fearless. He holds his ale well, but when he does get drunk, the brothels know his name too. Riddleport rumor holds that as many as six bastard children in the city may be Ulli's. |
