About Tupilek

Appearance:
Tupilek is a mountain. He stands a full head and a half taller than most other men, his body resembles an inverted pyramid. Broad shoulders are complemented by thickly muscled lanky limbs. He moves with the grace and surety of a mountain panther, icy grey eyes flaring under a long mane of midnight black hair. What little of his skin is exposed is the deep brown color of mocha. He is protected by thick wooden plates over layers of furs and thick boiled leather kilt. He carries a long stone tipped lance and on his back is a great two handed club fashioned from the tusk of a mammoth.

His Story:
Tupilek was born into the Tribe of the Mammoth, a semi-nomadic tribe of mammoth herders. The men would take turns leaving the village to join the long roaming drives of the tribe, hunting, and grazing the herd along the way. They would return after a several weeks, bearing game. The mammoths provided everything for the village, their bones became tools, their hides clothing and dwellings. The old mammoths provided meat through the long winter months when game was scarce. In this way the people and mammoth were one. They used products from the mammoths in trade with the dwarves, thus gaining access to coal to keep their yurts warm through the long dark months. Tupilek was the grandson of the tribe's shaman, and he had a good and loving childhood. When he was 12, it was deemed he was old enough to go on his first drive. In his tribe this was the way that boys became men. Mounting up with a more experienced hunter, he spent days on mammoth back in the cold wind. The ordeal was rough, but he learned many things. He made his first kill, a caribou. He learned to stalk prey and dress it, and how to survive without shelter. Over the next couple years he ranged many times, and became good friends with the older hunter, a man named Nanuc.

On one summer drive, they were ranging northward. A couple of days into their ranging a sudden darkness descended from the sky and an army of giants, orcs and other horrors fell upon the hunters. The men and mammoths fought bravely, but were outnumbered. Tupilek caught a barbed arrow in the ribs and fell unconscious. When he awoke he was stuffed inside the sliced open belly of the mammoth he had been riding. Nanuc lay dead in the snow next to him, his shattered knife still stuck in the mammoth's rough hide. Tupilek was delirious with pain and blood loss and he slipped into a near death state. In this place between the world of the living and the dead, he encountered the great Mammoth spirit, the First Mammoth. It told him that Tupilek's people were a dying culture, and that all his own children would also soon be gone. He asked Tupilek to save his children, and in return he would save his own people. Tupilek agreed, and felt a strange and wondrous power surge through him. He awoke, his wound magically healed and his vigor fully restored.

He walked the killing field in search of survivors, but found only the crumbled bleeding corpses of the men and animals that he called friends. A strange whining sounds brought him to the side of one of the dead she-mammoths. At her side, still nuzzling his mother's cold breast was a baby boy, barely old enough to be weaned. Tupilek went to the little one and comforted him, swearing to himself that he would always care for the creature. Tupilek named the mammoth Pikkuveli, or 'little brother'. He was able to salvage enough clothing and supplies from the remains of his companions for them to make their way back to the village. By the time he arrived it too was in smoking ruins. All he managed to salvage was what he could carry, including the tusks from a massive mammoth that were sacred to his tribe. He was consumed with black fury and lust for revenge, and spent the next few years hunting the evil humanoids with Pikkuveli at his side. It was during this time that he learned the name of the Hag who had led the attack on his home, it was Bampfwick.

Eventually in his wandering he met another tribe similar to his own. They saw him as a holy man because he lived wild out on the tundra, just like the mammoth. They took him to their shaman, who Tupilek told his story to. The old man encouraged him to stay and learn more of the ways of peace. He tempered Tupilek's fury with his wisdom and they spent several fruitful years together. Now a man fully grown, Tupilek set out to continue to fulfill his promise to the First Mammoth by providing service to the last remaining mammoth tribes as a wandering warrior. He still loves to fight against the monsters of the north, but no longer seeks out constant conflict like he did in his youth. He travels the taiga, helping any who need it without asking for anything in return, protecting those who are one with the mammoth.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
--------------------
Challenge (Ex):Once per day, a cavalier can challenge a foe to combat. As a swift action, the cavalier chooses one target within sight to challenge. The cavalier’s melee attacks deal extra damage whenever the attacks are made against the target of his challenge. This extra damage is equal to the cavalier’s level. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day for every three levels beyond 1st, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level.

Whenever an order of the land cavalier issues a challenge, he receives a +1 morale bonus on ranged attack rolls against the target of his challenge. This bonus increases by +1 for every four levels the cavalier possesses

Challenging a foe requires much of the cavalier’s concentration. The cavalier takes a –2 penalty to his Armor Class, except against attacks made by the target of his challenge.

The challenge remains in effect until the target is dead or unconscious or until the combat ends. Each cavalier’s challenge also includes another effect which is listed in the section describing the cavalier’s order.

Mount (Ex):A cavalier gains the service of a loyal and trusty steed to carry him into battle. This mount functions as a druid’s animal companion, using the cavalier’s level as his effective druid level. The creature must be one that he is capable of riding and is suitable as a mount. A Medium cavalier can select a camel or a horse. A Small cavalier can select a pony or wolf, but can also select a boar or a dog if he is at least 4th level. The GM might approve other animals as suitable mounts.

A cavalier does not take an armor check penalty on Ride checks while riding his mount. The mount is always considered combat trained and begins play with Light Armor Proficiency as a bonus feat. A cavalier’s mount does not gain the share spells special ability.

A cavalier’s bond with his mount is strong, with the pair learning to anticipate each other’s moods and moves. Should a cavalier’s mount die, the cavalier may find another mount to serve him after 1 week of mourning. This new mount does not gain the link, evasion, devotion, or improved evasion special abilities until the next time the cavalier gains a level.

Adapative Strike (Ex):At 2nd level, the cavalier receives Catch Off-Guard as a bonus feat. As a swift action, he can cause an armed opponent to become flat-footed against any attacks he makes during that round with an improvised weapon. This ability can be used once per combat.

ORDER OF THE LAND
--------------------
Edicts: The cavalier must always strive to protect the common folk from the depredations of oppressive regimes. He must not decline any duty or mission because he is not properly equipped for it.
