You know how salsa gets hotter the longer it sets?

Pretty much that.

How many different options did it take to build up that 380 again RD?

Hmm... sounded like he did to me.

I think that's just how you interpreted it.

Funny, loaba didn't say anything like that.

the productivity increase of going from one monitor to two is huge and immensely satisfying. :)

As long as you have decent screen real estate, it's all good!

Lots of real estate. :) And another view.

Energy immunity is pretty easy to come by. Not that I play with anyone who actually puts out 380 damage with their spells.

I have a monitor the size of two. Does that count?

It can split screen too.

PCs do not represent the world. Ask the DM what weapons the NPCs the party meet are carrying around. Chances are, there are a lot of longswords.

Leave the party and roll a new PC. Save the cleric for another session. Possibly let the DM bring the cleric back as an enemy NPC with a mob to 'punish the defilers'.

Aww geez, you would ask me that.

In my spotty memory, generally speaking one side or the other ambushes, so that one side gets the surprise round. A lot of times both sides perceive and react to each other at the same time, so we just go with regular initiative.

The few times someone starts combat after both sides have recognized each other, but not initiated combat, it's just that one guy that gets the surprise round.

Think of it like the Mexican standoffs you see all the time in movies. Everyone is ready to go, but don't know if/when it will actually start. Then someone bumps a glass or makes some other loud noise and everyone starts shooting. (Regular initiative.) Or both sides are arguing, people are trying to calm things down, and one noob fires off a shot. (Surprise round.) Everyone looks shocked, and all hell breaks loose. (Regular initiative.)

I usually don't have to say it's a surprise round, because it's just one attack. So we resolve that and then move on with regular combat.

Never let it be said we cannot agree on anything.

Just most things. :)

Oh, YOU'RE Obvious Troll! I could never remember who had that alt...

Also, not following one rule or Rule Zeroing one instance does not make it 'DM Happy Fun Time'.

So?

I'm telling you in my games, dude says 'I'm attacking', he makes his attack roll, we resolve it, and then start initiative. How hard is that?

Why do the rules need to?
It is their sole function in life to tell people what to do.

Suggest, not tell.

Why do the rules need to?

wraithstrike wrote:

The question is when should a surprise round be given?

When the DM says so.

If one character decides to attack, he is the only one in the surprise round and can take one action. Then regular combat rounds start.

As I said it is all about expectations, if one know that one can expect to “stripped of possessions”-start it works fine, if it just dropped in often seriously backfires.
Before making characters any good GM should give some info about what sort of adventure to expect for the enjoyment of all involved.

Oh, I don't disagree. We weren't happy with the 'in media res' opening, but the way he handled it was bearable, if not optimal.

Had he mentioned this beforehand, I would not have recommended cavalier over paladin for my wife. My choice may or may not have changed, since my character had already determined he would have a light armor backup.

This being a new group, we just didn't see a cause to raise a fuss over it. If he had said 'no, you brought your horse with you, roll to see if it drowns' or 'you were obviously wearing your heavy armor around the boat, make your swim check', THEN we would have left.

Polygamous marriages between consenting adults are fine and absolutely should receive full legal benefits and if anyone thinks otherwise, they are a bigot. Got it.

Absolutely.

Of course, the adults who enter into consensual relationships like that have no one to blame but themselves if it goes poorly. They can't come crying to everyone else for allowing it.

They CAN come crying about abuse and other such things, but those things have nothing to do with the kind of relationship they are in or being allowed to have that relationship.

Oh, he is very careful. My wife played the cavalier he spoke of. (She had originally looked at paladin and changed her mind a few days before the game.)

Luckily, she and I know better than to build one-trick characters. My dwarf carries a chain shirt for the times his heavy armor is inappropriate attire.

What reason would he have had to deny a wizard his component pouch on a ship? Doing so just because the cavalier had to leave her horse behind is showing favoritism to the cavalier, by punishing the wizard without reason.

P.S. We're still gaming with him.

You have a very strange way of playing.

You must be playing some different half-orcs than the ones I've seen...

Over the top for your game maybe, ma.

I didn't say 4E was a good game.

You see to be projecting a bit.

Also, what fighter is going to have an 18-20 Int at 16th?

It's not your dislike making it a bad thing.

Auxmaulous wrote:
Sounds like it is.

But that doesn't make it universally bad.

Me not liking 4E does not make it a bad game.

Now this I can get behind.

Penetrating Strike should be 'You may ignore a number of points of DR equal to your BAB'.

Nah, not really.

Oh snap.

I never got to a level where Divine Power was available. Never heard of the Skillful enhancement. Nor did I get to prestige out either.

Nobody plays the Tarrasque. It just IS.

Not many younger people we meet have played 1st & 2nd edition and we are concerned that this could translate into the designs of what Pathfinder puts out.

Y'know, this isn't a bad thing. You may not enjoy it, but that doesn't make it bad.

Half-orc.
Gnome.
(Hey, the two things that were missing from 4E for awhile!)
Half-elf.
Aasimar.
Tiefling.
Goblin.
Etc.

Ooh, can we talk about banning home-school since it's child abuse?

Just the 'home' variation?

I'm all about accommodating my players. Working on my homebrew, I've specifically included some character options due to characters my players have played.

If some player brought me a character and tried to FORCE me to integrate it into the world, I'd probably punt him out the door.

Best of luck Jess. I'm in the middle of my own transition to a new job, and I hope yours is smoother than mine.

Reducing them to a healbot is different from giving them 1/2 BAB. Plenty of people will still play a cleric with 1/2 BAB.

Let me be clear...are you claiming that if Clerics had 1/2 BAB, no one would ever play one? Because I have a hard time believing that.
No, I doubt anyone will want to play a cleric like this. People will still play one because they will be pressured by the group members that want their own personal healbot, but I don't think it would be enjoyable.

I've played a 1/2 BAB cleric before, and willingly.

This one.

Anything that isn't directly about Obama's statement is a threadjack. The rest of the discussion here is rehash of a dozen other threads with the exact same players saying the exact same things. Yawn. It's like watching reruns of Happy Days, but only the later season ones without Ritchie.

What is Happy Days?

So, have you figured out who can be your friend yet?

This one is the one I found.

The fighter is supposed to be the fightingest class that ever was or is or ever shall be, so why does everyone else get full BAB next to him? He should have the most attacks and the most accurate attacks. Drop every other class that is full BAB to 3/4 BAB and every class that is 3/4 BAB down to half (take that monks) and watch the tears flow.

And wizards should have +0 BAB at 20th level.

Some of the 1st level bloodline powers to add elemental properties to weapons for short times might be worth it, but most of those bloodlines have higher level powers that won't benefit a non-spellcaster.
