Unfortunately, I think I'm going to back outta this one. I sincerely hope you all enjoy this campaign! Feel free to use Treiden to set an example of the no doubt ruthless foe in your next match.

Thanks y'all!

Treiden whirls his kyoketsu shoge around one with his eyes fixed on the last standing man in the arena. Taking advantage of the distraught state Breunnor had left the poor foe in, he deftly launches the blunt hoop at his opponent's ankle to knock him to the ground then swiftly follows up with scorpion sting with the weapon's bladed end.

Hope Ended. Full Attack action to Flurry against Barbarian 4 with the kyoketsu shoge using combat expertise.

Flurry 1 (Trip): 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 2 = 15
Flurry 2: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 2 + 4 = 26 (+4 v prone)
Damage 2: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

True, alchemy is based on Intelligence but perception and spacial awareness is all Wisdom. If someone felt like slipping poison or something into one of your extracts or even the flask you drink it from there's a very real chance your PC would be entirely unaware of it. I'm sure as things go on, PC's will gain access to a lot of outside materials.

High Int/Low Wis is the classic "absentminded professor" type build. Y'know, the kind of person who accidentally makes a batch of cookies with salt instead of sugar. Wallace, of Wallace and Gromit fame (my son watches these movies all the time), is THE perfect example.

I'm not saying this will happen but it's something some self serving person could easily organize. There is and always should be consequences to dump stats. That's what makes them so much fun.

********************

My character doesn't wear armor. That being said, my opinion on the matter should make no difference.

Probably for the best. Not sure how far along the evil scale Xem is but if he's a glory hound it might be safe to assume he'd play with Garris' alchemy supplies. Garris would probably never even know or wouldn't be able to tell the difference given his terrifying wisdom score.

No worries. I'm not in the business of min/maxing so I'll stick with Treiden as is until he's dead.

Thanks for the option though.

*Link => Bleed*. Beginning of his turn. He should be dropping in front of you momentarily. Enjoy your Coup de Grace :-)

That was actually my first choice of exotic weapon but I didn't see it listed.

DM Heterocephalus wrote:
Dragon style? if not cannot charge just walk up and hit only.

Yessir. Unless I'm mistaken, you stay in a combat style until combat ends or you switch out.

Did you ever see that terrible Ninja Assassin movie? It's that thing that kills everything forever.

Noticing the imminent win he and his fellows are soon to have, Treiden braves the distorted battleground as he charges in against the cluster of enemies and friends, whipping the iron hoop wickedly into an unaware barbarian's rib cage.

Full Round: Charge attack Barbarian 3 with Kyoketsu Shoge. Fighting with Expertise and final round of hope. All modifications are reflected in my spoiler. AC penalty from charge noted in spoiler.

Charge Attack on Barbarian 3: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 - 2 + 2 + 2 = 15
Kyoketsu Shoge Damage: 1d4 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 2 = 12

Barbarian 5's Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Barbarian 6's Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Barbarian 7's Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 4

All AoO's will be at [+7;1d4+8] with 10ft reach

Probably too late for this now but it's nice to keep in mind for the future: Area Spell Templates.

I'd say this fight would have been a great deal easier had we actually strategized in or out of combat but it looks like we'll manage to make it out without casualties.

Wounds/Vigor is a really neat variant so I'd say yes.

I think a couple of those Barbarians provoked those pre-rolled AoO's from my last post. My Kyoketsu Shoge has 10' reach so if they moved around without rolling acrobatics they provoked. Combat Reflexes gives 3 AoO's a round. Also I had taken the Daredevil penalty to AC into account in my 'Stats' spoiler so my AC last round was 15 meaning one of those attacks missed.

Treiden continues fighting the overwhelming force of enemies, sinking a right cross on the opponent to his left while simultaneously placing a swift kick to another barbarian's stomach. He steps back after his allies fill in the field for a chance to recover.

Full Attack Action: Flurry of Blows with Unarmed Strike; Misc: 5' Step. Fighting with Combat Expertise and Hope. All modifications have been adjusted in 'Stats' spoiler.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 2 = 21

On Barbarian 6
Flurry 1: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 8 - 2 + 2 = 22
Damage 1: 1d6 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 2 = 12
Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 1

On Barbarian 5
Flurry 2: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 2 + 2 = 26
Damage 2: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9
Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Barbarian 7's Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 2

That's good news. Seeing as I don't have a CHAR modifier there isn't much of a point to exploit that house rule. Thanks for reminding me though. When Treiden dies I may consider building a different styled character.

DM Heterocephalus wrote:
LOL just saw saw Closed door spoiler!!! That's all you did????

Yeah. I decided to go with the monk rhetoric jam. Probably wouldn't be into subjecting other people into the same misfortunes he's suffering. It'd be pretty hypocritical.

I may as well be who they want me to be...

Treiden ditches his defensive stance and takes to a light jog across the broken ground Xem created. His speed picks up dramatically as he turns and dodges down the field in an unpredictable manor. When he reaches the savages at the other end of the field he jumps up and drops both knees into his enemy's shoulder and rides him to the ground. Spinning to his feet he places a deft kick to the next one's stomach and awaits what could be his justified death.

Using my Daredevil thing to charge in and make a full attack on Barbarians 8 & 7. Dragon Style allows me to charge over difficult terrain. Fighting with combat expertise and hope. All modifications have been made to my combat spoiler.

On Barbarian 8
Flurry Attack 1 (trip): 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 = 28

On Barbarian 7
Flurry Attack 2 (UA Strike w/ Stunning Fist DC 15): 1d20 + 8 + 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 2 - 2 + 2 = 22
UA Strike Damage: 1d6 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 2 = 15
Bleed Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

AoO on 8 if he Stands up:

UA Strike: 1d20 + 8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 2 - 2 = 25
UA Strike Damage: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 2 = 11
Bleed Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3

If Needed:

Misc Kyoketsu Shoge AoO 1:

Kyoketsu Shoge: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 8
Kyoketsu Shoge Damage: 1d4 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9

Misc Kyoketsu Shoge AoO 2:

Kyoketsu Shoge: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 18
Kyoketsu Shoge Damage: 1d4 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 2 = 11

I can't open Google docs from work. I'm home now and just placed my token (S,15).

My action is currently delayed until appropriate.

Garris "The Dragon" wrote:
Treiden. First your 75' away. You can't move more than 30' and ready, and you can't ready a full attack. And you can't mover 30' ready an attack and take a 5' step with it.

Apologies, I assumed the word 'Hold' was synonymous with 'Delay'. I don't know what the map looks like or I would have made a more specific post.

Any kind soul can place me close to the front line at about a distance of 15 ft from the enemy. If that's impossible, I'll hold my action until an enemy comes within 15 ft of me.

Treiden takes to the sands with a light jog. The Orator, another polished fat man who even from a distance looked like he stank of scented oils and wine, made his introduction. "With hands like steel, he reflects swords and steel like weeds. A warrior of a mystic origin...I present you Iron Hand!!!"

Treiden didn't realize until after the crowd reacted that he was supposed to make another show. He quickly whipped around his kyoketsu shoge and gave another performance of his control over the exotic weapon. his nerves were slightly on edge due to the size of the crowd but as he went on he felt his confidence grow.
Perform(act) vs DC??: 1d20 + 6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 4 + 2 = 18 (+4 Bloodsport Showman; +2 Hope)
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 15 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 15 + 2 = 33 (+2 Hope)

The iron hoop at the end of his weapon spun in a lazy circle at his right while its fierce curved blade was fixed menacingly in his left hand. He lingered back while the others charged in against the enemy. When the opportunity presented itself, he took a swift step forward and released the hoop at the ankle of one of the charging barbarians sweeping him to the ground. Before the enemy even had a chance to rise Treiden had recoiled the disc and altered its arc causing it to smash into his chest.

Swift: Change to Dragon Stance; Misc: 5' step towards the enemy; Full Attack: Flurry of Blows with kyoketsu shoge. Fighting with Combat Expertise.

Flurry 1(Trip): 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 24 (-2 Expertise; +2 Hope)
Flurry 2: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 7 - 2 + 2 + 4 = 30 (-2 Expertise; +2 Hope; +4 melee v prone)
Damage: 1d4 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10 (+2 Hope)

DM Heterocephalus:
Note: The kyoketsu shoge has 10' reach and combat reflexes allows me 3 AoO's per round. To keep things simple, you should probably roll these if they come up. I might 1 if the guy that I tripped doesn't get mauled by my teammates and tries to stand up.

Attack +7, Damage 1d4+6 (Includes Hope and Expertise)

*Edit* - That wasn't a crit. Copy/paste error on my character sheet made me think I had a 19-20 threat range. Fixed now

I can't get into the map at work so it'll be a while till I'm able to do anything properly. It sucks pretty bad.

Did we already perform Step 2 or was that a private demonstration er something? I'm a little confused on that.

Fair enough.

Sooooooooooooooooo, it's Option 2?

Luckily I haven't taken either of them yet since there would have been no benefit. What I was saying was you could remove them as options since all classes are open game and that clearly shuts down a major benefit of playing the class. IMO.

Jobasha "The Jaguar" wrote:
if option 3 is what we signed up for, i must have misread somewhere (and please point that out to me as i do not recall seeing anywhere that we were to take mandatory gladiator levels past v3)

It was brought up a few times around *here* but there was no direct "Yes" or "No" so we just had to assume.

It was because I was under the assumption we were only taking further levels in the Gladiator class that I asked if those 3PP feats could be taken. I needed to know whether or not it would be worth continuing up the UA strike path. Depending on if/how character creation changes, these can be taken off the board as options.

Behind Closed Doors...:

PERVERT!!!

Florine had already disrobed and laid invitingly on a bed of soft beaded pillows and richly colored blankets. She was somewhat shocked when Treiden looked to the floor and asked her to dress but did so without any hesitation. "It has been weeks since I slept in on a real bed. Jail cells, slave pens, animal wagons... never a bed. It has left my back in knots. I would be grateful if you would help me rid them." Florine did just that though after only a few minutes, the monk had fallen swiftly to sleep.

Ariella Moiraine wrote:
"Did you take that woman last night?"

With an even face, he studies the tone and body language of the "woman" questioning him. After a moment of silence, waiting for the slave drivers to leave earshot, he whispers reply. "Her services were not rendered in your expected fashion. The servant Florine knew of ways to alleviate stress and tension without resorting to debase herself." With earnest eyes he gives her a simple nod and continues marching.

*******************

Treiden walks into view of crowd without armor, only his Kyoketsu Shoge wrapped tightly around his wrist and forearm. His face and chest were painted in deep black paint giving him a ghostly visage (Think Mani from Brotherhood of the Wolf). Without speaking, he slowly begins to rotate his arm, unraveling the rope and hoop and sending it in a wide arc over his head. As it spins, he jumps over and through its designs and makes daring juggles with each dangerous end. When his display comes to a close, he whips it over his forearm and the weapon wraps itself back up in the same position where it began. He gives a silent bow and returns to his brothers.

Perform (act): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29

Jeeze... I should stop sleeping so I can keep up with this friggin' thread.

My thoughts:

Option 1:

I suggested gestalt under the stipulation that however we class ourselves, we would always be gestalted to Gladiator. I suggested this to help make our PC's at least slightly different from each other.

  • Owyn Nakagro - Fighter//Gladiator 5
  • Jobasha - Ninja//Gladiator 5
  • Xem - Monk 2/Cleric 3//Gladiator 5
  • Ariella - Rondolero Duelist//Gladiator 5
  • Breunnor Kegbreaker - Unbreakable Fighter//Gladiator 5
  • Chasik - Staff Magus//Gladiator 5
  • Treiden Monk//Gladiator 5
  • Aramus - Bard//Gladiator 5
  • Garris - Alchemist//Gladiator 5

As it stands we're all playing roughly the same thing (Seriously, count the number of people fighting unarmed/nat attack). My suggestion was meant to let people shine in different aspects.

That being said, I've played in Low/No magic settings a lot and they're always fun. If this game was to depict Spartacus: Gods of the Arena or Gladiator than it's perfectly reasonable to restrict the class choices to martial only or incredibly limited casting.

  • Option 2:

This would be just as nice. The Gladiator class is nice for the first 5 levels but kinda spins out afterwards; just look at the capstone. Really?

I'd love more levels in Monk. It's been years since I've played one and due to all the publicity they get on this website I figured: "Hey! What the hell, why not?"

    Option 3:

This is what everyone signed up for. Not a problem.

If this is a vote, I'd stay Option 1.

Reminder to Americans: VOTE! It's the only illusion of power we have!

Neato! What do I add that moral bonus to?

"So this is where we are to perform," Treiden muses to himself as he slinks along in chained formation with the others.

Yeah I figured Treiden would just do a massage or use her to dig up some information on Ludos or something. You can have the guards drag him in and I'll play it out from there. I'm kinda going by the old boxing rule which is along the lines of "no sex for a week before a fight" even if his monk mindset doesn't apply.

I'll keep that card in my pocket for now. Could be a good way to make allies (or enemies *cough* Ariella *cough*).

After receiving confirmation from the masters over one or both desired weapons...

Treiden takes his seat between Ezer and Garris and contemplates the "gift" he had received. The woman is likely a slave just as I am. If the men in this room are now my brothers, she would be my sister. Though, judging by the crowd, they may not see her in the same respect...

He continues drinking water while the others grow rowdy from ale. Though the crowds would ultimately choose his fate tomorrow, he reserved the choice to see it through without risking self-afflicted ailment due to excess.

"If you can guarantee my protection I will return the same," Treiden vows to Garris. "But only under the promise that you can control the feral monstrosity you manipulate yourself into."

    Chasik"Bash" wrote:

"So we should expect men at tomorrow's event," Treiden assumes aloud.

"I thank you for your kindness," he tells Onimais and Desimo humbly, watching Florine make her way to the seemingly out of place private room. "At the monastery, I trained extensively with flexible weaponry to offset the limitations of the human body. With the Sunsetsukon or the Kyoketsu Shoge I would be able to display to the audience a training performance that may please their eyes during our introduction. If you're lodus is equipped with such weapons I would make great use of them."

Still deciding on whether or not a monk would engage a prostitute. I'll mull it over during RP with the others.

It's about time prostitutes start giving back to the community.

Treiden watches as Garris incites a mediocre toast. It was evident that he was the only newcomer who was prideful of their new occupation; that or he was the only one foolish enough to be excited by it. He lifts his crudely shaped pewter mug of water in a "cheers" motion but from the expression on his face it was clear to most it was just an empty gesture.

    Ezer Hallebaim wrote:

"I did only what I was told; same as the others." He then turns his head to regard Ezer more clearly. "Where did they take you yesterday?" he inquires curiously.

    Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

It might be best to try to balance all of the gladiator traits while we're at it. Berserker and Braggart give some charisma based checks a boost, Showy does the exact same thing but imposes a DEX penalty. Backstabber gives +5 to Attack and Damage in all sneak attack situations (unlimited use). Daredevil gives you pounce once a day at a -5 penalty to AC and a boost to Acrobatics checks. And Joker is up for discussion...

We might want to come up with a baseline so these abilities aren't all over the place

Finally, prostitutes who contribute to society.

"I thank you for your generosity... Master," the last bit labored from his lips.

This is my obligation. My promise to keep. These are my masters until my crimes have been repaid, he thinks heavily to himself as he heads towards the mess hall for a bowl of grey paste. He is shocked out of concentration when Garris' now human hand claps him on the shoulder.

"It would be a gift for any of us to protect their brother's back and a miracle to expect the same in return," he replies with hollow voice.

    Sense Motive (Hunch DC 20): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

Gathering that the other slave harbored no ill intentions (assuming) he takes his meal at the same table. "What do you know about the Novitus match they speak of?"

Breunnor - I'm glad to hear you're safe. Owyn's right, though. You should probably get that shift key looked at before it creates a bigger problem.

Jobasha - There's plenty of trippers and a grapplers so I doubt you'll be wanting for Sneak Attack. I suggest you play up your high CHAR and make some friends first.

"What would you have us do now, Onimais?

No worries. Tid bits like these are typically why I shy away from PvP. There's just so much bookkeeping and people tend to call out what is normally ignored against common enemies. :-P Totally makes sense for this type of campaign though. We just have to hold out until there's reason for us to start functioning as a unit.

Treiden nods to Owyn, understanding that the both of them saw there was no reason to continue fighting past what their master's willed them into. "To you as well," he replies, smearing off a small rivulet of blood rolling from his nose where Owyn had hit him. "I would hate to see those blades sharpened."

2 Quick Notes: (1) Bleed Damage comes from the *Belier's Bite* feat with Unarmed Strike. (2) My AC is at 20 due to Combat Expertise so two attacks still hit but your crit unfortunately isn't confirmed. Total Damage Taken 18.

Treiden reels back from the sword and shield smacks he took from his opponent then quickly resolves to try from a different angle. He moves swiftly to Owyn's left and tries again for an unarmored section beneath his chin but is deflected by a raised shield. He takes that opportunity to place a blow just under the armpit and close to Owyn's heart.

Full Attack: Flurry of Blows with UA strike. Using Combat Expertise (-2 attack / +2 dodge AC)

    Flurry 1 w/ Stunning Fist DC 15: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 - 2 = 10

    Flurry 2: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 - 2 = 26

    Critical Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

    Bleed Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4

    Total Damage: 20 + 4 Bleed

I believe the worst is over here in upstate New York so all should be well if things keep steady.

I hope you and your family keep safe, Xem.

    Hooray for PvP!

I can't get into Google Docs from work so this is based on last fight's setup. If I can't get a full attack then disregard Attack 2. Thanks!

Treiden steps up against his overbearing opponent and gives a courteous bow before Onimais snaps his whip to signal combat. He studies the weapons Owyn carries and decides that if he could successfully unbalance him, he would be useless without arms.

He steps up cautiously and slams his pointed fingers into Owyn's solar plexus through a gap in his armor then follows up with a palm bash to the nose.
