The Polls have opened!

I posted this is in the Contest thread, but the link is buried deep in comments, so I've moved it to it's own thread!

We, the judges have chosen! Now is the time to VOTE!!

Matt "fray" Widmann, Ted "Zuxius" Thompson, Andrew Vallas of Paizo, and myself all sat down and discussed the 17 entries in this contest. In an hour long conversation over Skype, we selected what we all agreed were the top five logos.

Now, keep in mind, the judges had critical comments about each one of these logos, and whichever logo does claim the most votes will still require some modifications. But, we all agreed that each of these logos, with the necessary corrections and changes, would serve as a great logo for PFU.

And now, you, the Paizo fans, get to vote on which of these excellent logos should become the OFFICIAL PFU symbol. This logo will adorn Wayfinders, Pathfinder Chroniclers Anthologies, and future PFU products.

The Voting Survey can be reached VIA THIS LINK.

The voting poll closes on May 15th, 11:59 PM Pacific.

Good luck to each of our finalists!

And also, feel free to continue this thread with discussion on which logo YOU like best! We'd like to hear your thoughts!

So, every year we've had a PaizoCon, it has been a tradition to hold a dinner event that we call the "Meet and Eat" the Thursday night before PaizoCon on Friday.

For the first PaizoCon, we held it at Todai Sushi/Asian Buffet, in the Redmond Town Center (that is gone, but a nearly identical restaurant called Haiku is there now). We had maybe 20 people.

For the 2nd-4th PaizoCon in Bellevue, we have held the Meet and Eat at the Crab Pot in Bellevue. This event went from 50 to 130 people attending in that time.

Now, for this, the 5th PaizoCon, we are in Redmond. Not only that, we are in the Redmond Town Center. Lots of places to eat. But not many can handle a 100+ person event.

Here are my top two suggestions at this time, both very close to the hotel:

Haiku Sushi Buffet. This would be sort of a "homecoming" for me, as this was the same space we held the 1st Meet and Eat. Price is $25+drink cost. All you can eat sushi, seafood, Asian cuisine. Private party space only holds 60 people, though. So any people in excess of that would need to get a table outside of the party room. I am inquiring about the availability of the party room, and whether we could take over the tables in the area of the room as well.

Claimjumper. I just went to dinner here tonight. The menu is VAST. They have a pretty large area that could accommodate 100+ people. They have a happy hour from 3:00pm - 7:00pm in their saloon area, so a great way to hang out and gather before we go get seated at 6:30 or 7 PM.

Again, these are my initial choices. I have no confirmation of availability for July 5th.

I would like to hear from all of you that are coming to PaizoCon 2012, and are planning on attending the Meet and Eat. What sounds good to you? (keep in mind, I can only pick ONE)

Paizo Fans United. What exactly is it? A company? A secret organization? A front?

Paizo Fans United (PFU) is a banner for fan-based products produced under Paizo’s Community Use Policy. Rumor has it that Paizo needed something to put the Wayfinder issues under in their store, and "Paizo Fans United" seemed to be a pretty apt name. Since then, Wayfinder Fanzine issues have been loaded under the PFU name, and recently the Pathfinder Chroniclers’ Anthology was added. But, the PFU banner has come to mean a bit more. These are not just any fan-made materials. These are products that are inspired by Pathfinder content and by Paizo’s quality. The result is a highly professional look that makes readers question, "this is by fans?? Wow." THAT is what the Paizo Fans United banner means.

But, despite all that, when people ask for a logo for PFU...well, there isn’t one. :-/

After nearly a year of discussions about how to come up with a suitable logo for PFU came up with no ideas, Hugo (butterfrog) Solis proposed this: A CONTEST.

And so it shall be!

We call upon the Paizo fan community to design a logo for Paizo Fans United!

This logo should be the best representative image that symbolizes professional quality content produced by Pathfinder fans FOR Pathfinder fans.

We will be accepting your interpretations and designs until April 16, 2012. Then, a panel of judges from the Paizo Fans United representatives will select their TOP 5 choices from the pool of entries, to be announced on April 30, 2012. At that time, the contest will be open to the public to vote for their favorite logo from the top 5 choices. Voting will close on May 15, 2012.

The end result, of course, is a fan-created logo for a fan-based content banner chosen by the fan community!

PRIZE: The designer of the winning logo will not only receive the accolades of the fan community, and get to see their logo representing the Paizo Fans United banner, but they will also receive:

  • Print copies of Wayfinder #1, 3, 5, and 7
  • Print copies of Pathfinder Chroniclers Anthology #1 and #2

It’s a celebration of Pathfinder Classics!

In honor of the 5th anniversary of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, as well as 10 years of Paizo, we invite you to return to your Pathfinder roots! Yes, it is time to go back to your bookshelves, and start rereading your Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, your Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path, your Darkmoon Vale modules…and expand upon them! Please use the products list below as your main references (as well as that handy-dandy PathfinderWiki)! In the case of a plethora of articles on similar subjects, preference will be given to articles that follow this theme. As always, crunch, fiction, and flavor articles are welcome! Also, artists be sure to note our Call for Art Submissions as well!

In addition, writers can submit to one of several regular series featured in Wayfinder:

So, in case anyone is curious, each of the aquatic insects is actually based on the real thing. I'm an aquatic entomologist by profession, and it has been my wish to be able to make some of what I see under the microscope in a bestiary as MONSTERS.

The artwork that is shown in #49 is of the belostomatid...the giant water bug. Belostomatidae is the family name of these true bugs. To get a good idea of these critters you can download a PDF on them. Or google "belostomatid". Lots of good pictures. Even a few youtube videos of them hunting!

The water strider is also a true bug, from the family Gerridae. These are the "jesus bugs" you see skimming across lakes and ponds, and slower river waters. They can gather in swarms, too...just not on humans!

The hellgrammite is a dobsonfly larvae. You can't get a real good sense of how truly nasty these things can be until you SEE and HOLD them. Check out these wonderful pictures!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

For all those attending PaizoCon 2011.....

Our Butterfrog is once again hauling our Wayfinders north to Bellevue, and our Wayfinder funds are depleted!! If you are at PaizoCon, and enjoy your copy of Wayfinder, please consider a small donation. You don't have to, but even a buck would help us to cover these last unforeseen costs of getting your copy to PaizoCon.

    BACKGROUND:

For the past two PaizoCons, Paizo Fans United has produced a PaizoCon edition of Wayfinder, the Pathfinder 'zine by fans, for fans. What is special is that it is an actual PRINTED issue, and it is provided for free to all attendees.

But, printing isn't cheap. In order to print copies, we ask for donations. 3PP companies donate money for advertising space in Wayfinder. Paizo fans donate to support the 'zine and to get a physical copy for themselves. Paizo has been very supportive in donating $1 for every PaizoCon glass sold.

This year, we have produced Wayfinder #5. To scale up with PaizoCon, we have also printed more physical copies than ever before....500 copies. Luckily we had raised enough funds to meet all these costs.

    Or so we thought.

The copies have been printed and assembled. Now, to just get them from Mexico to PaizoCon....

That's where we need your help.

In the past two years, Hugo (aka Butterfrog) has taken it upon himself (literally) to haul our copies in his own luggage, and check his bags to get the Wayfinders to us. He has even enrolled the help of Carlos! This has worked, but checked bag fees have gone up, and the weight limits are less (with steeper fees, too). And we have spent all our funds on the bigger print run.

So, as you page through your copy at PaizoCon, think about Hugo and Carlos lugging their suitcases full of Wayfinders. If you can spare a buck or two, find Hugo or myself. We will be VERY appreciative!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

Gather around our campfire, visitor, and we will tell you tales of daring to fill your heart and sing songs to make even the hardest soul weep. Try your hand at Towers, or if you are brave enough in this Age of Lost Omens, receive a Harrowing. The horizon beckons us ever onward - we will not be here tomorrow, for we are Varisians, and the road is our home.

    Welcome back to Varisia!

Some of you may remember this little fan project called Wayfinder (if you aren't, go get yourself acquainted). It is now time for the FIFTH issue of Wayfinder! A little change up this time around...Lilith is passing the baton, so it is looking like I will be stepping in to help steer this project this time around. (Desna help us...) So, let's review the rules and guidelines for submitting to the fanzine:

    Goal
The goal for the fanzine is to create a collection of fan-created articles and supporting art set in Paizo’s Pathfinder Chronicles world of Golarion.

    Types of Submissions

In the case of a plethora of articles on similar subjects, preference will be given to articles that follow this theme. As always, crunch, fiction and flavor articles are welcome!

The question was posed in another thread if I should be getting a head count of those planning on attending.....

    The answer: YES!!!!

Please sound off here, with the fact you will be attending, AND if you are representing more than yourself, how many.

If you are counting more than yourself, just make sure that those people don't come on here and post that they are attending as well. That'll inflate the numbers REAL fast.

    SO, SOUND OFF!!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

I just started up a Kingmaker game, and was a bit worried out how I was going to run the game with NO minis whatsoever. I love painting minis, but can't afford to go out and buy several 100 minis, and then paint them. And certainly not when my game was in TWO days.

So, I came up with a cheap alternative to buying tons of miniatures. I told some friends, made a post on Facebook showing how I did it, and got a really positive response. So, I reposted to my Livejournal page, to share with the larger community.

    Non-Facebook Post is here

I hope this idea helps other, like-minded gamers.

Let me know what you think!

So, I recall that there once were some inquiries on what folks should do with spouses with kids not gaming at PaizoCon?

My wife has offered to meet such people at a local venue for a Saturday. This could be:

    Woodland Park Zoo
    Seattle Aquarium
Seattle Center (which has the Children's Museum and the Pacific Science Center)

Anyone interested? Post here, and we can start a discussion!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

    Just a note to everyone...

I finally made my room reservation, and found out that pretty much all the rooms were booked for Saturday night. They had a few left outside of the Paizocon block, and I ended up getting one of the remaining townhome suites.

So, if you've delayed to the last day, keep that in mind. You may need to get a room in a neighboring hotel.

    Hey everyone!

This being the 3rd Annual PaizoCon, we need to have the 3rd Annual Meet and Eat, as well!

The Meet and Eat is a pre-PaizoCon gathering, where folks coming in from out of town, as well as us locals, all descend on an area restaurant, eat some dinner, and get to know each other. This way, when you show up for PaizoCon, you've already got some friends!

We have it on the Thursday evening before PaizoCon, starting around 6 pm or so. The present choice so far is The Crab Pot in Bellevue (it was GREAT last year!).

Every year so far, we've managed to get 20-25% of the Con attendees to show up for the Meet and Eat. And since this year we have a cap of 500, we could get...(ulp!) 100 people??? Yikes!

I don't want to depend on that as my sole estimate, though. SO!

If you are attending PaizoCon, and are planning to attend the Meet and Eat as well, please post here that you are coming, and how many of you are coming.

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

So, once again I'm the track leader for the gaming panels at Norwescon. Norwescon 33 is coming up on Easter weekend, April 1-4, 2010. I set the lofty goal of getting Pros in the gaming industry on my panels, and I'm doing pretty well with that...several of the Paizo folks, WotC folks, Green Ronin, and quite a few other game companies in the Seattle-area attended. And it looks like we will have a great group of Pros again this year!

I have a lot of good panel topics...thanks in part to the post I made here last year, I had a list of 38 topics that I used to establish my 26 panels for Norwescon 32. However, I really don't want a replay of last year. So, I need more IDEAS for gaming panel topics.

My first step: ask my Pros. Done. And I'm getting some great ideas.

Second step: ask a bunch of gamers what they'd want to have for panels if they were to attend the Con. And, I hope many of you will attend.

So, this is the 2nd step....hit me with your ideas/requests!

    Fire away!!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

OK, folks! This is the thread for our pre-PaizoCon Meet and Eat event.

The proposed restaurant to eat at this year: The Crab Pot.

The specialty here is the Seafeast. Essentially, the Seafeasts are a big bowl of select clams, mussels, shrimp, crab, with potatoes, corn-on-the-cob, and sausage. They put butcher paper down on the table, and dump the bowl out on it. You get a cracker, mallet, and cutting board and go to it!

If seafood isn't your thing, they do have burgers and salads.

Happy Hour runs from 4pm to 7pm. We could do dinner at 6pm, or we could decide to sit down at 7pm, after happy hour subsides.

Now, to see what the interest is, and to plan for it, I'd like a show of virtual hands here....who's in?

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

So, dim sum. I had planned on having a Sunday "brunch" of sorts by leading a pack of you to a nearby dim sum restaurant.

Looking at the PaizoCon schedule for Sunday, there will be a lot of games running from 8 to noon. A 10:30 dim sum run would prevent playing in that morning session. Unfortunately, going for dim sum after 12 would result in a seriously long wait, and probably would limit the selection once (if) we were seated.

Does that make a difference for anyone?

Alternatively, someone asked if dim sum could be done before the Con starts on Friday. Answer: Yes...sort of. Top Gun opens on Friday at 11 AM. PaizoCon events start on Friday at noon-sharp. Which then poses the question: Can a group of 10+ people eat dim sum in under 1 hr? Answer: Probably not. It'd be cutting it awfully close, especially if you want to sit down at your game promptly at noon.

    So...who's still interested? Sunday? Friday?

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

As the track leader for gaming, I'd like to invite everyone to Norwescon 32 this year. One of the goals when I took on the track was to get professionals from the gaming industry to be our invited guest speakers (what we call Pros), to talk about topics that they, and the gaming fans, want to discuss.

I think we've done a pretty good job at meeting that goal.....I've posted the gaming track's schedule up on my Livejournal.

Besides having Erik Mona, Jason Bulmahn, James Jacobs, and Sean K. Reynolds from Paizo, we have quite a few other gaming pros attending:

Chris Pramas, Green Ronin and Flying Labs (Pirates of the Burning Sea)
Donna “Danicia” Prior, also from Flying Labs
Mike Mearls, Andy Collins, Rich Baker, and Shelley Mazzanoble from WotC
    Randall Bills, Catalyst Labs
Mike Selinker and Teeuwynn Woodruff from Loneshark Games
    Wolfgang Baur, our Kobold-in-Chief
    Jason Soles, from Privateer Press
Gwendolyn F.M. Kestrel, D&D Developer and Writer
Darren Drader, freelancer and author of Reign of Discordia
Jeff Grubb, author and game designer
    Julie Haehn, game designer
    Jeremy Holcomb, from Bucephalus Games
Jeff Combos, from Exile Game Studio (Hollow Earth Expedition!)

    Please, give us a look-see!!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

Greetings to everyone attending PaizoCon this year!

If you have never been to Seattle before, you may be wondering what there is to do outside of the Coast Hotel in Bellevue (well, I did say "may be"). Here is a brief collection of links that will start you thinking:

One site to start you out
Plus here's a great virtual tour to launch

Since it's the ocean that draws a lot of people, I'd start by focusing on Seattle near the waterfront. The waterfront is a nice walk, lots of restaurants, including Ivar's Acres of Clams and the Crab Pot. Also, you've got the Seattle Aquarium there, and Pike Place Market right nearby. Piers 55/56 is where you can catch a cruise to Tillicum Village on Blake Island and have a smoked salmon dinner...very cool. Or just take a ferry ride over to Bainsbridge Island and back.....

Pike Place Market: Everyone sees the upper level, with the guys throwing fish, but the lower level is pretty cool too. And go across the street and go through all the shops there, including Post Alley. My favorite place to eat there? Piroshky Piroshky, across the street from the main market.

    Pioneer Square:
Lots of nightclubs here, but of special interest I HIGHLY recommend the Underground Tour, This is one of the neatest things I've ever done in Seattle.
Plus, one of my favorite restaurants, the New Orleans Cafe, is down in Pioneer Square. Oh, and down near Safeco Field, go across the street to the Pyramid Brewery and Alehouse.

    Lake Union:
Two great restaurants here, Ivar's Salmon House and Siam on Lake Union.

Seattle Center: The Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, The Experience Music Project and SciFi Museum. Lots to do here.

    Fremont:
The little hippie side of Seattle. Lots of public art (People waiting for the bus, the Fremont Troll), lots of weird little shops, coffee houses galore. And nearby is the Woodland Park Zoo.

    Hiram M. Chittenden Locks:
By June, the sockeye salmon are starting their run, but it's a cool place to see regardless. Ballard is a neat district....Scandinavian in nature.

The international district in Seattle is also a fun place to go and eat, and shop. Especially going into Uwajimaya!!

Lastly, further south is the Boeing Museum of Flight.

    Well, that'll get you started!
I invite others to add to the list!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

So, to build our list of games that are NOT PFS scenarios....but ARE run by attendees....I post this:

If you are wanting to GM your own game at PaizoCon, be it a conversion from a classic 1E or 2E adventure, or from 3.5 to 4E, or just a 3.5/Pathfinder beta game you've written up...whatever it is, if you want to run it, why not propose it here to have it be considered for the schedule?

Post it here if you want all to see and comment on it, OR
Email it to me: timitius at hotmail dot com

Include the following in your pitch:

    Title of the game
Description of the game (the back cover kind of text)
    Minium/Maximum # of players
    Gaming System/edition
    Maturity rating (G, PG, R)
    Player experience req. (None/some/walking PHB+DMG)
    For what Character levels?

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

So, in the tradition of the 1st PaizoCon, Lilith and I would like to have some "fan-run" events to add to the Paizo-run events. Paizo shouldn't have to do it all, you know!

Ideas that have been floating are:

    Iron Illustrator
    Artist Alley

    Prize drawings for fan-created/donated stuff
-a custom mini made by Lilith
    -minis by N'wah
    -character sketches by Butterfrog
-Pact Magic book by Dario Nardi
    -the bugleyman Memorial prize drawing

Plus, what panel topics would YOU like to see at PaizoCon?

This is the thread to throw out some ideas!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

    Hey everyone,

I'm the Track Leader for Gaming panels at Norwescon at SeaTac, April 9-12, 2009. Now, I'm not in charge of the gaming rooms, but I am trying to help them out by getting some games in there.

I haven't heard of any Pathfinder games going on, though. Norwescon WILL have Erik M., Jason B., James J., Sean R., and Wolfgang B. on the gaming panels, so I've got Pathfinder presence there, but we need representation in the gaming rooms, folks!

If you ARE running a Pathfinder game or a PFS scenario at Norwescon, post it here! If you are interested in doing so, post it here as well, and we will get you in touch with the people to make it happen.

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

I wanted to at least be the first in line to wish James a very happy day today!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

For all the new blood frequenting this board, you have two threads in particular that are required reading:

The Campaign Journal of Tyralandi Scrimm by James Jacobs

    Jason Bulmahn DMs Eberron

There will be a pop-quiz afterwards.....

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

Let's all gather 'round the burning corpses and join in the cacophony!

    Sing!

    SING!

So, I'm the track leader for the gaming panels at Norwescon 32, coming up on Easter weekend of 2009. I have set the lofty goal of getting Pros in the gaming industry on my panels, and I'm doing pretty well with that...several of the Paizo folks, WotC folks, and quite a few other game publishers in the Seattle-area have agreed to attend.

The thing is...I need IDEAS for gaming panel topics. I need about 25-30 topics to present as THE panels, so that all the Pros can start picking and choosing what panels they want to be on.

My first step: ask my Pros. Done. And I'm getting some great ideas.

Second step: ask a bunch of gamers what they'd want to have for panels if they were to attend the Con.

So, this is the 2nd step....hit me with your ideas/requests!

    Pretty please?

OK, decided to move this discussion to a new thread.

You know, I've been INCREDIBLY impressed by the level of artistic talent offered by you all.

It's prompted me to consider something, being the PaizoCon dictator that I am....I am thinking of doing something featuring Pathfinder artwork (both official AND fanwork).

First, if we held an event or set aside space for art, would you attend PaizoCon?

Second, what sort of event would work for you?

An artists' row (with tables, display boards behind you)?
A gallery/art show (room set up in the evening to display)?
A panel? (Thinking of a projector, here, displaying a slideshow of various pieces)

Just thoughts. But it's an idea that is slowing growing as I see more and more here from this thread.

Bottom line: I'd like to make this a part of PaizoCon. Who's with me?

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

So, as I sat at home mourning the fact that I really couldn't (shouldn't?) go to PAX due to having my wisdom teeth recently removed, I saw that the Open Gaming area was showcasing "Dungeon Runners", a free online game.

So, I downloaded it. And played freakin' ALL Labor Day weekend....

Think dumbed down WoW, a dash of DungeonSiege, a pinch of Diablo2, and a generous helping of humor throughout.

I have to go find a retail copy...so that I can get my "Bling Gnome" and 6 months of membership.

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

I thought I'd post the link to the journal for the homebrew campaign setting I'm playing in right now with our DM Gigz, and players Mike McArtor, Amber Scott, Shannon, Steve, and Matt: Aram.

It's called Sins of the Ancients and this looks to be the third campaign in this world. Matt and I play characters that are a new race: the ihn...sort of elemental halflings. He's light...and I'm dark. We are a regular Odd Couple pairing.

The roleplaying is...well, it's an incredible amount of fun! And it's all virtual. We play using Ventrilo and Maptools. Yet, despite this, this group manages to roleplay full-on, to-the-hilt. I've seen more in-game character development through roleplaying than in any other game I've been part of.

Give 'er a read, and hopefully, we will start uploading our characters' person entries soon-ish.

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

On my recent trip to Hawai'i, I found some time to break out the ol' alpha rules and get some of my reading time in.

So, where in the world are YOU reading Pathfinder? Post a URL to your photos!

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

OK, so I was browsing the internet, when I land on RPG.net. I am reading a short thread, and I look up at the ad header and see.....CthulhuTech.

My brain does a little "WTF?" and I make a mental note to return to that.

    So....I did return to that.....here.

I've browsed through the site. I've watched the video (awesome art BTW). And I SO WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME. I suspect that my Hellgate: London habit is just amplifying this a few notches, though. I'm looking at this, and I get a Hellgate to DOOM feeling from it. And making that an RPG, not a video game, just excites me to all get-out!

But, at the same time, I have no idea if it is good or if it sucks. I have lots of these "cool" games on my shelves that I have never played, or played for awhile shelved due to lack of true playability or interest (Contiuum, In Nominae, and yes, my beloved Cyberpunk 2020).

So, what's the scoop on CthulhuTech?? Cool? Or should I just start in on another kooky idea to meld Call of Cthulhu with Cyberpunk 2020? Hmmm. Maybe use CoC d20 with CyberpunkOGL....

My DM just sent us this image....

Do you think our next session is going to be tough?

Taldor (Male Human v.2.1 Sci-Fi/Fantasy/RPG geek combo class: Lvl 9)

I, for one, have been curious, and mildly interested in this PbP section you folks have going on over here.

Problem is, you either know what it is, how to do, what joining a game entails, etc....or you have no idea. I happen to be one of those in the latter. Oh, I get it, that you are essentially running an adventure, campaign, module, by posting back and forth. But, I have no idea how much time/effort that requires. Simply, how does it work???

I've been extremely interested in joining one of the Planescape PbP that I've seen get started...but I shy away because I don't know what I'd be getting myself into!

So, I'd like to ask one of you PbP veterans to write up a FAQ or Player's Guide to Play-by-Posting, for all us newbies that have no idea what it is y'all are doing in here!

And once that is written up, how about we post it as a sticky in this sub-board, so those who want to ask these basic questions have to look no further than the top of the list?

Good idea? Bad idea? Go away n00b?

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

Jason, please, please, please tell me you are considering making "Darkness" actually dark, and not "Dimness" or "Shadowy Illumination". Magical darkness used to be pitch black! Make it so again!

If it were me, I'd rename 3.5's "Darkness" spell as "Shadow", and make it oppose "Light". Then the "Darkness" spell (pitch black, as in earlier editions) would oppose "Daylight".

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

In all the drama and flame wars, I saw the phrase "Boot to the Head" a number of times. Now, I know the origins of this phrase, but I wanted to share that with anyone who DOESN'T, and with those who like trips down memory lane, as well.

From the Frantics: Tae Kwan Leep

and a later skit from the TV show "Four on the Floor"

    Priceless stuff!

As I look at my options for what D&D I want to play, I have to consider what books and products I want to buy (other than Paizo products, which is an easy decision! Pathfinder Campaign Setting!).

So, in considering MY future of D&D play, I see a LOT of variant rules for 3.5. This doesn't surprise me at all...but it alarms me that I have no idea what is a good variant and what is utter crap.

Take for instance Monte Cooks Arcana Evolved (or Unearthed). First of all, what the heck is the difference? Is Evolved just Unearthed 2.0? And just how good is it as a variant set? Is it a must-have? or a "meh"...

I've also heard that his Book of Experimental Might is very close to a 3.75 or even 3.99 edition of D&D. Again: Is it a must-have? or a "meh"...

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

    This blog is brilliant!

And for our Canadian friends, especially, check out this one

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

So, my oldest son is turning 7 next week, and we mentioned to him that he is probably old enough (and reads way above his 1st grade level) to start learning and playing D&D.

I've seen the D&D Basic Set for sale, but I hear mixed reviews on it, and never really anything about whether it's a good beginning for say...a 7 yr old. And then there's the issue of whether I teach him 3.5, or wait to start fresh with 4E (since this will be HIS start in D&D, not mine). We also thought about just playing the Descent board game at first, and then introduce D&D when he got the concept of RPGing down.

Has anyone else gone through this? How did you introduce the game to your kids? What would you suggest?

And let's not get into the typical 4E vs 3.5 flame war on yet another thread....please?

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

    From this link:

While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clock-wise circles. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" with your right hand. Your foot will change direction...and there's nothing you can do about it.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but it's a cool idea, and may net you some gaming buddies:

I posted my stats on my profile based on my PERCEIVED abilities. However, I was searching for info on how a Charisma of 8 would be played and found tests (on a dating site :/) that give your D&D stats.

For physical (STR, DEX, CON) go here

For Mental (INT, WIS, CHR) go here

Um...I think I'll keep my perceived stats.....;)

    Taldor (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber)

So, I'm just finishing up some of the Elric novels, and it got me wondering if there are any campaign settings where elves are NOT the nice, tree-loving race. It seems that D&D adopts the LOTR elves.

I am discounting the drow, here. The drow fit this somewhat, but are often isolated as a race, where you have to go underground to interact with their realm, or off on a remote continent (Eberron) deep into uncharted jungles.

What about a prevalent evil Elven Empire (E3!), dominanting a world or continent? I mean, we have Orc Nations and such. Why not make traditional elves the bad guys? I think it would be great if, like the Melniboneans, they were prideful race that considers the younger races to be inferior, worthy only of being slaves ruled by the gleeful cruelty of their Chaos-serving masters.

Also, what of the type of setting where a cataclysmic magic event warps and changes areas of the world, giving rise to new creatures, magic and the like? Many, many fantasy novels do this, yet I cannot think of many campaign settings/RPGs that do. Eberron has the Mournlands, but mostly that is like a zone of devastation, not a twisting or reshaping of reality.

What with the RPG Superstar and all, these are ideas that sort of go against the tradition grain of D&D. Sort of like a Blink Dog Nation, but opposite (turning a player class into a monster class).

    Thoughts??
