I’m relatively certain that the spells Eneration and Energy Drain are not eligible to have the “negative levels bestowed” doubled on a critical hit. However I’ve been wrong before, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could find definitive rules that allow it to happen. Below are, I believe the relevant quotes from books, emphasis mine.

Enervation: CRB p.277 wrote:
You point your finger and fire a black ray of negative energy that suppresses the life force of any living creature it strikes. You must make a ranged touch attack to hit. If you hit, the subject gains 1d4 temporary negative levels (see Appendix 1). Negative levels stack.
Energy Drain: CRB p.277 wrote:
This spell functions like enervation, except that the creature struck gains 2d4 temporary negative levels.
Critical Hits: CRB p.184 wrote:
A critical hit means that you roll your damage more than once, with all your usual bonuses, and add the rolls together.
Spells and Critical Hits: CRB p.184 wrote:
A spell that requires an attack roll can score a critical hit. A spell attack that requires no attack roll cannot score a critical hit. If a spell causes ability damage or drain (see Appendix 1), the damage or drain is doubled on a critical hit.

If you look in Appendix 1 in the CRB p.555, you find a heading titled “Ability Score Damage, Penalty, and Drain. and 7 or so pages later on p.562 you’ll find a seperate heading titled “Energy Drain and Negative Levels”. This is where it talks about “negative levels” and it does not refer to it as “negative level damage” or “negative level drain”.

As far as I can tell this should sum up that a critical hit will not double the amount of negative levels bestowed since it is neither damage, nor ability damage or drain.

I don't know if the website is just broken or what. I'm trying to purchase a bunch of pdfs and it has me in some kind of loop. I go to checkout, it asks for my password, then redirects me to the homepage. I click on my cart, go to checkout, it asks for my password, rinse and repeat.
It's very frustrating to get the feeling that Paizo apparently doesn't want to take my money and sell me pdfs.

Journal Entry 1

Off to explore the "Green Span" in the company of five would-be heroes...

  • Gavader - an elven paladin, you can always tell by the shine of their armor and the holier than thou vibe they give off. Although I'm not sure what deity he answers to. He wears a holy symbol of a sword, I'll have to ask him about it sometime.

  • GoblinSlayer - a human warrior. Not sure if he's actually earned his name, but he seems capable enough.

  • D-Ork -a half-orc. Some sort of alchemist if the odd smells and foul looking concoctions are any indication.

  • Nameless - she hasn't given a name, doesn't speak much common, or very well for that matter. She's an elf, some kind of wizard I guess since she's not wearing armor and theres a large book shaped object in her backpack.

Day One
We arrived at the only trading post for hundreds of miles. Olag's is the name of the place and it's owner. It's run by himself and his wife, although I missed her name. Apparently there's some local group of bandits hassling them.
We set up an ambush for their next visit and killed two and captured the other two. Would have been simpler to kill them as well but they surrendered so now they're someone else's problem. I expect they'll be carted off for the nearest magistrate to hang, if Olag doesn't just slit their throats when they're sleeping. Probably be simpler.

We waited till they came in for their monthly tribute. GoblinSlayer hid behind the gate, while D-Ork and I took the higher ground, him on top the cabin and me on the parapet to the right of the gates, while Gavader and Nameless took cover in the stables. I took out the gangs leader with two arrows while Slayer closed the gates and Gav and Nameless took them from the side and D-Ork threw acid from above.

As the subject line says I'm asking the Paizo gods to do whatever might be necessary to make the pathfinder novels available in audio book form. Preferably on Audibles service since I use them already.
Or if they are available as an audio book already could someone kindly direct me to where they may be found?

Okay, so I know any particular rogue talent can only be chosen once unless otherwise stated. The rogue talent Combat Trick allows a rogue to choose a combat feat (as long as you meet the requirements of course since it doesn't say otherwise).

My question is whether I can get another combat feat by getting Combat Trick again by choosing it through the Ninja Trick talent?

As far as I can find nothing RAW says anything against it. And although I'm a little conflicted on whether it's a bit cheesy to do, at the same time I don't really feel its unbalanced or overpowered to do so.

In fact I could swear there was some kind of rule that allowed you to take that talent twice anyway. Maybe I'm crazy or it's some forgotten relic of 3.0 or 3.5 and I'm just misremembering.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

I'm building a barbarian to use "Overbearing Advance" and "Overbearing Onslaught". I already have "Improved Overrun", and "Greater Overrun".

Can anyone think of any feats, traits, or items, magic or otherwise that give bonuses to the Overrun combat maneuver? Oh and I would prefer that any suggestions would be legal for PFS organized play.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I'm also looking for anything that might increase the size category I can use overrun against.

Hello, due to hard times and trying to make sure Christmas will still be good for everyone on my list this year I need to cancel my subscriptions and any pending orders.
So please cancel all my subscriptions, as well as order #1800896 and #1795772.
Hopefully next year will be less rocky and more profitable and I'll return to an enviable subscription model once again.

I'm looking into using my numbers app to track party xp for my home campaign. I want to have a cell for each character that will take the resulting sum at the bottom and compare it to the xp table and spit out a result of what level the character is based on how much xp they have.
Hopefully that's clear.
Can anyone tell me how to do that? I'm new to mac's in general and iWork.

Thanks for any help.

Just wanted to clarify this for myself. Since the Ninja class is listed as an alternate class for the Rogue core class, this means that a Rogue can't take levels in Ninja, and a Ninja cannot take levels in Rogue.

Have I got this right?

The Exchange

Ok, so here's my gripe.
I'm making a sorcerer that deals primarily in fire spells. I thought maybe WoP would give me some more flexibility in my casting. Unfortunately it seems I'd be better off just going with standard spellcasting.

So here's the deal:

As an example at tenth level a standard wizard could cast a 10d6 fireball with a 20 ft. radius using one 3rd level spell slot. However for a word caster to accomplish the same thing he would need to use a fifth level spell slot in addition to using a meta word of which he only has 5 uses per day at this point.

Anyone else disappointed by this?

Looking at the shadow dancer it seems like a really cool prestige class to play. However it also means you have to give up alot of functionality of your other class, be it rogue or bard or what have you.
Is there a build anyone can think of that makes it worth giving up 5d6 of sneak attack or 10 levels of spellcasting? As it is I can see taking one level for HiPS and maybe a second for darkvision if you don't already have it.
So honestly, what build can make a shadow dancer useful?

The Exchange

In this particular case I'm wondering if you can apply sneak attack damage and vital strike damage when attempting to sunder someones weapon?

The title says it all. Don't care who it's by but would like it to be similar in scope to Treantmonk's. As in, not going whole cheese and keeping in mind stats using a 15 to 20 point buy.

This is for a build I'm working on (Elven Barbarian 6/Alchemist 6 designed with the PFS rules in mind so max level is 12)

Disclaimer: Yes, I realize this build will have flaws due to maxing out a few tricks. It's more an exercise in discovering what's possible.

Starting Stats:
Str 15
Dex 16
Con 12
Int 16
Wis 12
Cha 7

Here's the build so far:
Traits: Accelerated Drinker/Heirloom Weapon (elven curve blade)
(1)Barbarian 1: Raging Drunk(Ex), Rage 5 rds, Feat=Power Attack
(2)Barbarian 2: DR (1/-), Knockback(Ex), Rage +2 rds
(3)Alchemist 1: Alchemy(Su), Bomb(Su)1d6, Mutagen(Su), Brew Potion(Ex), Throw Anything(Ex) Feat=Improved Bull Rush
(4)Alchemist 2: Poison Resistance +2(Ex), Poison Use(Ex), Concentrate Poison(Su) +1 Strength
(5)Barbarian 3: Extreme Endurance[fire resist 1](Ex, Rage +2 rds, Feat=Improved Overrun
(6)Barbarian 4: DR (2/-), Overbearing Advance(Ex), Rage +2 rds
(7)Alchemist 3: Bomb(Su)2d6, Swift Alchemy(Ex) Feat=Combat Reflexes
(8)Alchemist 4: Explosive Bomb(Su) +1 Strength
(9)Barbarian 5: Rage +2 rds, Feat=Greater Overrun
(10)Barbarian 6: DR (3/-), Overbearing Onslaught(Ex), Rage +2 rds
(11)Alchemist 5: Poison Resistance +4(Ex), Bomb(Su)3d6, Feat=(not sure yet)
(12)Alchemist 6: Swift Poisoning(Ex), Sticky Poison(Su), +1 Strength

First, I pumped my strength to a laughably ridiculous amount.
But I've run out of ideas for further improvement.

Here's what I've got so far-
+4 enhancement via bull's strength
+4 alchemical via a mutagen
+4 morale via a barbarians rage
+2 size via enlarge person

Can anyone think of any other sources of bonus to strength of a different type than those listed above?

Secondly, he's going to be doing alot of overrunning. But once again I've run out of ideas as to where to squeeze more bonuses from.

Here's what I've got-
Base Attack Bonus +10
Improved Overrun +2
Greater Overrun +2
Strength +11 (I can get his strength to 32 for at least 15 rounds at 12th)

For a grand total CMB +25 for overrun which I think will probably go through several mooks even with a -2 per each additional. And of course I'll be boosting my speed with expeditious retreat

That's where I run out of bonuses. Can anyone else think of any feats/traits/odd ideas to squeeze a few more bonuses from?

Essentially the idea is with a few rounds of prep he'll be able to move apx 50 ft around the battlefield overrunning multiple opponents until one finally stops him. Doing 11 damage to each one while getting at least 4 attacks of opportunity for an average of 25 damage each time.
Of course the plan is to keen the elven curve blade as well to have a fairly decent chance of criticalling on those extra attacks. Not to mention leaving several foes prone in his wake.

So what does everyone think?

Can't find anywhere in RAW to clarify this for sure. But I'm wondering if its possible to buy a composite bow of +0 at character creation with the Heirloom Weapon trait in order to gain masterwork, and then pay to upgrade the strength rating later, and therefore not waste the trait when you later want to add magical qualities and greater strength damage?

My gut says no simply because it seems too good to be true, but not sure what the developers had in mind. And I've no idea what earlier additions stated on the subject.

I just noticed this the other day, and had not previously been aware that the spell invisibility, and therefore all of it's higher level versions, since they state they act like invisibility, all have a weight limit of 100 lbs per CL. I'm willing to bet this effectively rules out by RAW most large or larger monsters from ever taking advantage of this tactic. Since even if a dragon or a giant or whatever has a decent caster level, the majority of them are going to weigh in excess of 2000 lbs which would effectively prohibit them from gaining any advantage of invisibility even at CL 20.

Any thoughts, ways around this by RAW?

Any interjections by the developers would be appreciated. Was this intentional?

Does anyone else think this is strange? Cayden Cailean, the god of freedom, ale, wine, and bravery. Who is often depicted wearing broken shackles and who is a major opponent of slavery, does not grant access to the Liberation Domain.

Yet, Desna. The goddess of dreams, stars, travelers, and luck. Does grant access to the Liberation Domain.

I think perhaps this may be an overlooked errata, maybe Liberation and Charm between the two of them need to be switched.

Anyone else notice this strangeness?

Okay, so I'm going through spells for a druid I made and I'm looking at Call Lightning and going wait... is this even worth it?

My stance is that as a 3rd level spell, it should be a reasonable distance better than the second level Flaming sphere which does similar damage but only requires a move action to direct to the next target.

And, parts of the Call Lightning spell sound like that is what it should take to use.

From the second paragraph of the spell. My bold.

Core Rulebook wrote:

You need not call a bolt of lightning immediately; other actions, even spellcasting, can be performed first. Each round after the first you may use a standard action (concentrating on the spell) to call a bolt. You may call a total number of bolts equal to your caster level (maximum 10 bolts).

Here is a snip from Flaming Sphere.

Core Rulebook wrote:

The sphere moves as long as you actively direct it (a move action for you); otherwise, it merely stays at rest and burns.

So, although Call Lightning last a good deal longer, you can only call a maximum of 10 bolts with it, effectively reducing what should be a large amount of usefulness to 10 rounds.

Looking at both spells, I cannot see any point where given the choice between the 2nd level Flaming sphere, and the 3rd level Call Lightning that I would ever choose Call Lightning. Flaming Sphere at a lower level has much more versatility, allowing me to continue casting as I do damage, and nearly as much movement as it can ascend or jump 30 ft to reach a target.

I don't understand why Call Lightning is 3rd level unless theres been a clerical error and it's actually a move action to call a bolt.

Sorry for the rambling nature of my post, but what does everyone else think? Any thoughts?

Ok, my question, is whether it's allowed to add stuff like the dwarven dorn-dergar and other book specific weapons to the Pathfinder SRD and other such listings?

I've been trying to make a spreadsheet with a complete list of all the weapons, all the armor, etc... that's available in Golarion. This I'm working on for my own use, but I thought it might be easier if someone else had already done the work and added it to one of the wiki's or SRD's.

Any thoughts?

These two items are still listed as pending. Just wondering what might be holding them up.

Like the title, I was wondering if Paizo would be willing to add Traits their PRD for people to more easily reference. Is this something that they might be interested in making available?

The Exchange

Ok this is a first for me developing anything for sale in the game industry. So if anyone has any comments or suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thans in advance.

The Exchange

Ok, so I looked around for quite some time on the interwebs looking for a good form fillable stat card generator to use for monsters and other creatures that I need the information for when I run a game.

Alas, I hadn't found any to suit me and so I decided to design my own stat cards. I created a pdf with a dynamic form fillable stat card that with the users interaction can be customized for more or less info needed for each card, both front and back with a space at the bottom of the backside for the insertion of an image if desired.

I would also like to get something back from the long hours I put in getting it all to work like it's supposed to. I have been entertaining the idea of putting it up for sale online similar to many other individuals I've seen on this site as well as the drivethru rpg site. I was thinking of something like 2 dollars as a price point. I know I myself would have paid as much if I could have found one already out there.

My problem is I've never tried to market anything before, online or otherwise. I'm not sure what all would be required to make it conform to Paizo's Pathfinder Compatibility policy, or what I would need to do to put it up for sale on there site.

So my question is who can I talk to that would know about this stuff and be willing to give me advice on what I need to do and which ducks I need to put in a row?

The Exchange

Ok, so I've started using the Scribus program to create my own pdfs. And now I need some help figuring out how to accomplish something. I would like to create a fillable form field on the finished pdf that will allow me to essentially just right-click and add an image. I know I've seen this before on a character sheet that allowed you to add a pic of your character while you were filling it out so when you printed it out then you had all your stats and stuff and an image to go along with it. Of course it's been a while since I remember seeing it and I'm not sure it was a pdf, it could have been a spreadsheet version or something. But I would think this would be possible with a pdf.

Also, I'm trying to create my own pdf for filling out and printing monster stat cards and am realizing theres a good deal of variation in what info and fields are necesary. I was wondering what I would have to do to create like a drop down box or something or maybe some check boxes you could select that would add each necesary part of a stat block to be filled in as it was needed. Perhaps this might require more programming than what I'm capable of but I would think this would be possible.

Thoughts, suggestions?

The Exchange

Like the title of this post I'd like to know what software would be necesary to make a form fillable pdf, possibly also with autogenerating fields? I realize they're plenty of free pdf creation packages out there but I don't know if those will allow the little extras that I'm looking for.

I want to make some monster stat cards and other similar things. I've seen several versions by other people but none of them quite encompass what I want. So if I can I figure I'll just make my own.

The Exchange

Just wondering about the price discrepancy. The list price is listed at 0.99 and the sale price at 7.19

Does this mean that it's more expensive when its on sale?

The Exchange

Is this created using the PRPG rules?

The Exchange

In the table located on page 563 that gives the different modifiers to the DC to pinpoint an invisible creature with a Perception check. It states the modifier for the invisible creature to be a -40 if "Not moving". This confuses me, the rest of the modifiers get progressively larger from -5 to -20 for moving slowly to moving really fast. Shouldn't the modifier for effectively standing still be some sort of bonus? At the very least I should think it wouldn't hurt them more than charging or attacking someone.

The Exchange

Okay, I've dm'd on and off for several years now and over that time I've come across several house rules that I've liked or that I've borrowed from other games. Here's a few I'd like the community to look over and tell me what they think of them and any suggestions for making them better or more streamlined.

1.Hit Points: Your characters will begin with maximum hit points at 1st level character creation. When rolling for HP upon gaining 2nd level, you may bump the die roll by 3 points up to the maximum possible result on that die. This procedure will continue at 3rd and 4th level lowering the adjustment by 1 point each time. Thus you would modify the die by 2 points at 3rd and 1 point at 4th.

I will also be using whats called a Hit Point Kicker, an option I've borrowed from Hackmaster. Each creature and player receives bonus hp at creation based on their size. This helps promote character survival at those early fragile stages.

Fine 0
Diminutive 0
Tiny 0
Small 5
Medium 10
Large 15
Huge 20
Gargantuan 25
Colossal 30

2.Dice Penetration: Basically how this works is whenever a die is used to roll damage to hitpoints or healing of the same then if the maximum possible result is rolled you get to roll another die of the same size with a cumulative -1 modifier to the total damage dealt or healed. The -1 modifier therefore continues to accrue each time another die is rolled effectively capping the maximum possible so as to not make it too ridiculous. For example, suppose your basic fighter attacks with a greatsword and rolls his 2d6 for damage, say he rolls a 2 and a 6. He then rolls another d6-1 because he penetrated on the 6. If he rolls a six on the penetration dice then he rolls another d6 but now with a -2.

3.Armor Damage/Damage Reduction: I use a slightly modified rule from Hackmaster which allows a character's armor to absorb some of the damage from a hit that the character otherwise would have suffered. The armor takes this damage instead, requiring it to be repaired at some point. Armor will slowly lose a level of AC protection as it continues to take more damage, until the point where it becomes unusable and no longer provides any AC bonus at all. The amount of damage that a suit of armor will protect against will vary depending on material and quality but will always provide a DR of at least 1 until it reaches 0 armor points. This DR is subtracted from each die roll of damage that the character is effected by.

This DR is also effective against spells as well (except for the force only spells that are able to hit incorporeal creatures with no miss chance).

AC_____|___1_|___2_|___3_|___4_|___5_|___6_|___7_|___8_|___9_|
HP_____|__10_|__10_|__10_|__20_|__20_|__20_|__30_|__30_|__30_|
DR_____|___1_|___1_|___1_|___1_|___1_|___1_|___2_|___2_|___3_|
THP____|__10_|__20_|__30_|__50_|__70_|__90_|_120_|_150_|_180_|

Modifiers for special materials
Adamantine: 1/3 more hp per AC level, additional DR= 1/light, 2/medium, and 3/heavy per AC level.
Darkwood: no change, just lighter than steel.
Dragonhide: no change in hp, but one extra DR at each AC level.
Cold Iron: no change.
Mithral: no change in hp, but one extra DR at each AC level.
Silver, Alchemical: no change.

I have'nt quite got the hard/fast rules for what it will cost to repair the armor as of yet. My players usually find a wizard with a repair spell to do it for them. This works for now but if they have a capable wizard in there own party then it lessens the cost impact it's supposed to have on the characters. So I probably need to come up with something to remedy that situation.

4.Languages: Speak Language shall be considered a class skill for everyone. At character creation, the player may choose to learn a number of languages equal to there intelligence bonus from the list of bonus languages for their chosen race at no cost of skill points. This does not have to include the common trade language, but it is recommended. Any languages learned after character creation must be purchased with ranks in the Speak Language skill.

The maximum number of languages a character can learn will be limited to twice their intelligence modifier, minimum of 1 unless they possess a very low intelligence score at which point they speak a very simple form of their native tongue. If they have an extremely low score then they most likely communicate through hand gestures and grunts.

This is something I use just because it seems unreal for someone with a low intelligence to know as many languages as they feel like spending points in. For instance they have a hard time adding 2+2=4 but they can speak fluently in 12 different languages. Seems a little silly to me.

5.Reading/Writing: Characters do not automatically know how to read and write. If you wish to be able to read/write a language, you must spend skill points in Read/Write in order to do so. Also barbarians are restricted from learning to read or write during character creation, although they can learn the skill later if they so choose.

Read/Write is a class skill for the following classes: Bard, Cleric, Monk, Paladin, Rogue, and Wizard.

With Pathfinder's slightly different skill point system I'm not sure how to implement this now.

6.Criticals: For now I will be using the regular critical threat range and then roll to confirm. I will also however be using a roll to confirm for critical misses. The critical miss roll will involve any roll of a natural 1 normally. If your character has a negative modifier from dexterity this range will be increased by that amount. If an attack roll falls within that range, the player rolls again to confirm just like a critical hit, however if you miss the defenders armor class on the confirm roll than it will be a critical miss, if you hit the defenders armor class on the confirm roll it will simply be a regular miss.

The actual roll to decide what critical effect of a miss will happen is made by me behind the screen. However I will list below what the die range and effects will be, subject to change as I strive to make it a better system.

1-5 = Hit your closest ally
6-10 = Damage your weapon in some way
11-15 = Drop or throw your weapon
16-20 = Open yourself up to an attack of oppurtunity by your opponent

7.Firing Into Melee: I seriously plan on revamping the rules for this as I really can't find a good explanation for what happens when people try this. I will also need to incorporate the effects of the couple feats that touch on this kind of thing so that it still works smoothly as the game progresses into higher levels.

Essentially I feel there should be the chance of hitting any combatant of a melee when firing into one, as they tend to move around ducking and dodging their opponents swings. Nearly every game, I still get the crazy low level archer that wants to fire into melee when their own party members might take the arrow instead of their opponent. And currently the rules don't seem to frown on this at all. They just give you a -4 to hit and if you miss then you don't hit anything.

Ok thats pretty much all of them. Tell me what you think, and hopefully you can give me some suggestions to help streamline them and make them better.

The Exchange

Just recently discovered paizo's wonderful work and am looking for a steady game I might be able to join on the weekends, preferably on sunday as I usually have a 2nd ed or 3.5 game on saturday. I've printed off a copy of the beta release and had it spiral bound and I like what I see so far.

I live in hiawatha on the north side of Cedar Rapids so I'm willing to drive to Iowa City as well or anywhere reasonably close, up to 45 minutes or so away.

Not really interested in online or play by post. I'd much rather have the fun of sitting around a gaming table. I can also GM part time if necesary but I'd much rather play a character.
