So one of my player a sorcerer\elemental sevant just got the sign of the smoking eye by thowing his familier into the flam.

the way everything works out is that he would get 9th level spells at 20th level. This was before he got SSE. Now he dose not get them at all or until 21st level depending.. anyone one have any advice now how to work this out? he is bummed about the situation but i told him that he did it to himslef.

He made a personal sacrifice to become the potential ruler of Occipitus (though he may not have known it at the time). Personal sacrifice for the potential of great power. Tell him congradulations... he's well on his way to being your campaign's next great villian.

When a character loses a level (either trough level drain or raise dead or whatever) how do you go about removing that level?

I usually don’t remember the exact skill point distribution, or number of hp’s gained. from one level to the next.
And what about when that character regains the lost level?

Here's an alternative for you if you and your group are comfortable veering from the rulebooks:

Because neither I nor my players like to whip out an abbacus or crunch calculus formulas during game play, we don't do level loss. For any creature / effect that would have an energy drain, we (meaning whoever is DMing in our group, there's three of us that rotate), tend to go with ability score drops instead. It's faster to deal with and the player can more easily track what the original ability score was. We allow "restoration" and similar magics to get the PC back to where he / she originally was, or make the drain temporary and regenerate back slowly over time. You get the same affect in terms of Player reaction without all the math.

I want to know what other longtime gamers think of 3.5 edition, and if a revision was really needed.

I started playing when I was 10 years old. I'm 34 now. Was the revision necessary for stats and numbers, paper and pen stuff? Not in my opinion. I'm still playing by 2nd Edition, but our group stripped so much out of the rules for game flow purposes anyway that no body would recognize it as such. The big change I've seen, however, is in content and quality of the story line stuff, monsters, etc. That's improved greatly, and I'm acutally USING D&D products again instead of cannibalizing other game sytems. If they needed to revamp everything to breathe that kind of life into the system, so be it. I've gotten pretty quick at converting the stats back to 2nd ed in my head, so no big deal. :)
