I don't see anyone desiring to create a player who is crafty at disabling locks and traps, so I will create one for consideration...

"Yes?"

Movement: I'm going to stealthily (I hope) slide into the room and angle along the north wall to see if I can move around and get close to one of them. If my movement is sufficient (can't tell exactly from the map), then I will attack the closest. Hopefully it will catch him flat-footed.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Damage: Gladius 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Damage: Sneak Attack: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 4) = 10

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

GM:
Before I take action, I would like to see if I can determine exactly what these foes are attempting to rig up and, if there is a way I can sneak in and disrupt or disable anything harmful that is being constructed. If my skill knowledge is successful in providing sufficient information, it may determine an action other than attacking someone.

Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30

I'm hoping my stealthy ability will allow me to maneuver for a sneak attack...

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

Bijannar:
Thomi is okay (as long as he does not roll a 1). He is very talented in disabling things (+18), and cannot be caught flat-footed if one goes off. He also gets a bonus if one does go off, to take no damage. I could have taken 10 I suppose, with the GM's permission - would have resulted in a 28.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

(whisper): Shhh...I will go first.

I ready my Gladius.

Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22

I listen to see if I can hear any noises coming from the room.

Perception (listen): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

I will open the door slightly and peer inside.

Perception (look): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I examine the trap and attempt to disarm or disable it:

Disable Device Skill: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (2) + 18 = 20

That perhaps may not have been successful. Fortunately we are not being hurried, so I have time to try it again.

Disabled Device Skill: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (6) + 18 = 24
Disabled Device Skill: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (2) + 18 = 20
Disabled Device Skill: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37

Ha! That ought to do it. Sometimes you just have to squint your eyes the right way...

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I look around carefully to see if there are any noticeable traps on or around the door.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Natural 20! WOOT!

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I will be on business travel from tomorrow until Sunday, but have a netbook with me. So, as long as the hotel has WiFi I should be able to check in during the evening hours.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I have a copy coming via snail mail - can't wait to see it!

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I stealthily make my way to the top of the stairs, using only the faint ambient light from the torch down below to guide my way. At the top I stop and remain still and quiet, listening and looking for anything out of the ordinary (including hazards and traps).

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I cautiously start up the next flight of stairs, continuing to search for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19

Quietly: I am going to go up the next flight of stairs and see where it leads. Keep the torch here, I don't want to be seen...

I am fairly certain that if I follow the footsteps up the stairs, any obstruction or trap will have previously been triggered.

Grand Lodge

I am GMing a game on this site, and have been unlucky to play as a PC because the recruitment calls fill up too fast! Any thought about more than 4 for the adventuring group? Scaling encounters up or down is not that diffucult.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I check the area and the body looking for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

If no traps are found:

I look through the mining equipment and barrels to see if there is anything useful to pick up, such as the lamps, lamp oil, torches, tools, etc.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Appraise: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

I also examine the body, to determine the nature of the clothing, and to see if there are any clues or useful information to be found concerning his identity. That examination would include a search to determine if there is anything useful in his equipment, pockets or purse.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I find it hard to believe that whoever bled this much did not die from the wound. And yet, I see no body. Whoever was wounded here had healing assistance. There is an air current coming from the direction of those stairs. Perhaps they lead to the surface.

One final thought...I am suspicious of the stack of casks at the top of the stairs, considering the type of trap we encountered earlier. We should continue to be very cautious.

GM:

Considering the amount of blood, are there any bloody footprints or a trail leading up the stairs?

I cautiously enter the room beyond the doorway, continuing to have senses on high alert:

Perception (checking for traps): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Blessings of Elpis upon me!

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

This appears to be a map of some sort. I believe we just passed through what is represented by this rectangular room, and the passage continues onward toward a hill with a tower. Shall we proceed?

Perception (looking for traps): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

I stand behind Toranindracar, looking over his shoulder while he silently examines the parchment. The dim light of the torch makes it difficult to see, so I lean farther.

Long moments pass, and still Toranindracar is mute. I rest my forearms on his head, and lean over more, attempting to discern what is on the mysterious parchment...

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I give Toranindracar the parchment. What does it say?

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

Hey, look! Someone dropped this when passing through here. I don't read so good, but let's see what this is.
I pick up the parchment and examine it.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

To Aegwyn: If you can direct the torch ahead of me, I will go first and see if there are more traps.

I step through the doorway and begin a patient walk down the corridor, looking about as I go.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

GM:

Can I take 10 on the attempt to detect a trap on or about the doorway? We are not in combat, and there is no pressure to complete the task quickly. The result would be 21.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

The open door is an open invitation - probably too obvious an invitation. Bring the torch over here, and I will take a close look at the opening and what lies beyond it.

I carefully examine the door, the frame, the floor, and as much of the passage beyond the opening that I can see without breaking the plane of the doorway.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 Ugh!

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I am accompanying Aegwyn and Toranindracar, crossing the trough and approaching the doorway, still looking for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I stowed the components of the disarmed trap in my pack, so with a little luck we might be able to pay them back in kind, if the situation arises. It was a fairly simple mechanical system, so I don't think it would take too much effort or time to set it in place again.

The party we are following did not encounter difficulty passing this area, so there must be a way to avoid or suppress whatever wards are in place. Perhaps there is a pass phrase that must be spoken.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I release the torch and watch it float onwards. I put away my dagger, and pull out my club. I'm going to slowly step up to the first pair of bars, and extend my club into the space between them.

Elpis protect me...Elpis protect me...Elpis protect me...

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I think I turned transparent with that Stealth roll...or maybe incorporeal!

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

The ones we are following came through here, and I don't see evidence they met with resistance. If there is a danger, there are means to bypass it.

I switch my torch to the off-hand, and pull a dagger from my bandolier.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34
Knowledge (dungeoneering: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

I very slowly, very cautiously begin creeping down the right-hand side of the room.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

Feeling uneasy, I raise my torch again, and carefully examine the room, looking for mechanical or magical traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

To All: This is an amazing and perplexing sight to behold. Is it safe to venture forward? I don't see any obvious traps, but I don't feel safe, either.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

To Bijannar: Indeed, we did - but the "performance" by the oracle was pretty amazing. Let me know if there is anything written here that would warrant caution.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I cautiously hold my torch overhead and look around the room, to include checking for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 (add +2 to notice a trap)

To All: There is some writing down here, but I can't read it.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

GM:

Then I probably can only speak the tongue, but not read or write it.

GM:

I put a skill point in Linguistics, which allowed Thomi to learn a bonus language. The description of the Linguistics skill says that the person can work with a language in both its written and spoken forms. I would presume that means a person can read, write and speak known languages, unless you have a different interpretation.

I set my torch down on on the edge of the crevice, crawl over to the edge, and ask Varan to grab my wrists and lower me down as far as he can. When ready, he will let me go and I will drop into the chamber, hopefully land okay (should make the drop about 5-6 feet at that point), and then Varan can toss me the torch.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

Reflex Save (for the drop): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Reflex Save (to catch the torch): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

I remove the hand crossbow and the small keg from their niches, and place them in my backpack. The bolt slides into my bolt case.

To all: These items might be useful in the future.

I cautiously proceed down the cavern until I reach the pile of debris, keeping an eye out for more traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

To All: Hold fast! There is a trap or some device rigged here.

I examine the wire to determine its purpose:
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24 (+2 for traps)

And, suspecting the wire to be the trigger to a harmful device, I attempt to disarm it:
Disable Device: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (5) + 18 = 23

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I crouch down and make my way through the overhang, holding the torch out in front of me.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

Once past the overhang, I stand up and look around, to determine the next best course of action.

Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Another natural 20!

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

If I extend my torch under the overhang, can I see what the terrain is like on the other side? Or, is the overhang too long for that?

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I steady myself and slosh onwards downstream.

Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 (pretty dark in here...)

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Starting to slip, if Brogdar gets to me.

"Grab him, Aegwyn!"

Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I crouch down, extend my torch ahead of me, and squeeze my way through the tunnel opening. At the first opportunity I stand and observe the course of the stream.

To All: I fail to see how the other party could manage to get a boat or raft through this tight space.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d209 ⇒ 16

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I will test the waters. We won't need to swim if the stream remains shallow.

I pull out my everburning torch and wade out into the stream, and follow it through the cave wall...

Swim: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

I presume there is no light after the stream enters the cave wall. We will need to consider light sources, in addition to whether we are walking down the stream or taking the time to get a boat down here.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Level 5 Rogue

Knowledge (dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

The ones we are looking for have followed the stream, and did not return to this room. I believe we need to enter the stream to pursue their trail. We can do this without disturbing the pool.

Do you want to do this now, or do you want to look at the other branch of the intersection we came through?
