It was a scenario made of multiple parts, and we were in a part where we had to fight our way into a house, then investigate the house.
After a short stall mid-combat, with less than half the enemies dead and us not even in the house, in a single post the GM had the enemies flee, us search the house, find our objective, and travel back and report our findings.
I didn't agree with the loss of control over our PCs or auto-completing the mission and moving on.
I actually haven't really had any games stall except one, and the way it moved forward was actually an example I didn't agree with.
Hmm, in that first example, would fighting the end boss with full health and daily spells when you're expected to have been adventuring for a while throw off the balance? Should the easier battles be considered a reward for creative problem solving? In PFS are there times we should draw the line at them moving too far from the scenarios intended line of adventuring, and if so, how do we do it without just saying "No, do this"?
I've only played PbP for an extremely short time so I don't have any truly outstanding examples, but this post from my Emerald Spire game set the mood nicely.
It was descriptive, moved things forward smoothly without them feeling rushed, and left plenty of hooks for us to react to.
GM Red's "Go With It" section was particularly interesting to me, because Railroading is a problem I specifically want to avoid. Hearing others' thoughts on getting creative with moving forward is helpful!
GM Elinnea wrote: Yikes, I knew I was struggling to get a post to go through, but I didn't know it could end up like that! Robot me from the past, what thoughts were you trying to convey??
About what a GM does, what I wrote was something along these lines:
Create a world for people to play in (or bring the world to life, if using a pre-written scenario). Take note of what individuals want to do with their characters, since people play for different reasons (e.g. to be able to wield powerful magic, to live out a fantasy of being an action hero that becomes stronger over time, to explore strange new worlds, to try having a confident or intimidating or shy personality, etc) and give them chances to shine at what they like, if possible. Keep the game moving along and sometimes adjudicate or enforce rules to keep it fair and consistent.
I put my philosophy into this GM profile - though I consider it in preliminary form, since I haven't actually GMed yet and maybe my ideas will change.
I'll come back with an answer to Hmm's impromptu assignment after I've gone to browse through a couple of my recent games.
Whatever the problem is, it wasn't you. I saw your post before it turned into the text version of static and it seemed like any other post.
I just got out of work, about an hour until I'm home to update my profile.
Is there no rules for it anywhere then? For example if a player said "I move my full movement speed, then throw my weapon at him because he's still 10 feet away," I don't think a GM should just say "Your weapon doesn't have that property, so it can't leave your hands that way." It should be allowed, I'm just looking for rulings on it.
Sorry if this is spelled out clearly somewhere, but I couldn't find it. What are the rules for throwing a melee weapon? If I wanted to throw my Devastation Blade at a fleeing target just out of reach, what are the rules? What are my range increments?
Currently at work, will have mine up tonight!

GM Redelia wrote: Discussion topic for today: What do you guys think the GM's job is? (We'll assume that this is for a Play-by-Post game to keep things simple) To make sure that all the players at a table feel involved, feel as though they're contributing and making progress, and most importantly to have fun.
Specifically in regards to PbP, to provide Chronicle Sheets, to create the material necessary for a game (such as sheets, slides, and handouts), and to follow a Scenario or Module as closely as possible.
From a "meta" side, their job is to play enemies as accurately as possible. Never pulling punches but equally never playing an enemy as smarter than it would be. To encourage players to solve problems creatively, and when they struggle, to perhaps push them in the direction they need to go without making them feel like their hand is being held.
And finally to bring the world to life. To make the NPCs feel like real individuals, and to make players smell the oil of a ship and hear the quiet buzzing of the monitors. To immerse the players in the world and make the really feel "there."
At least that's just my take on it.
Hi Redelia, just popping in to let you know I added my NPC slide.
Charli Poshkettle wrote: I think they will eventually open up... You can ask on the Starfinder Boon Trading thread, if anyone is willing to spare one. I wound up offerng a Contest to give away my spare Legacy Boon but I have run out of them now, alas.
I sure hope they open up the legacy races by Origins with the start of SFS Season 2.
Hmm
Took your advice and left a post there, fingers crossed! Working on my character now though, not banking on a handout.
I do too, my biggest complaint (and where I struggled most to convince others to play) was with the lengthy ban list of PFS; more races were banned than you could play. It always seemed like 5e vs Pathfinder was an "Updated Mechanics vs Massive Content Pool" battle, so trimming huge amounts of content out made it lose some appeal.
It's really discouraging seeing Starfinder start with more banned races than playable races already.
Charli Poshkettle wrote: Do you have a Legacy Race boon, Luvia? I needed one in order to have Charli be a gnome.
Hmm
Nope, I didn't know we needed boons to be the base races. Are they as hard to obtain as boons in Pathfinder? In the meantime I'll remake my character.
Just popping in to say whatever issue was making me have trouble opening the folder last night, it's gone now and I opened it fine.
Alright, so I couldn't open your slideshow Redelia, I'm not sure why? I can open all my other GM presentations fine, for some reason every time I try to open the one for this campaign (Folder for the Class) it just hangs forever on the loading circle.
So basically I was flying in the dark. Not sure what I was supposed to do or how much I was supposed to do, or instructions on how to do any of it, but did my best. If there's anything I should add or change, please let me know! Some parts are intentionally covered/left out for lack of spoilers or because I don't have the tokens or character names to add yet.
I plan on heavily leaning on Photoshop to fancy up the slides, is that alright?
Still at work, should have it up like midnight Central Time.
That fixed it, thank you!! I wonder why that problem carried over into my forum post in this thread though. Bizarre stuff.
GM Poblano Pepper wrote: Hey Voice of Mag can you copy past your Character Profile in the google doc i linked below, the one with all the BB Code, and I will take a look. I'm like you and if I cannot fix little things like that i tend to obsess over them.
Google Doc
Thanks so much, I appreciate it. In the Google Doc I left it with as (ooc)(smaller)Acrobatics(/ooc)(/smaller)
In my profile, you can see what it looks like if I tighten the code, and do it as (ooc)(smaller)Acrobatics(/smaller)(/ooc).
You can see that when I tighten the brackets, it only further messes up the Acrobatics Line, and also messes up the Disguise line further down. Ignore that, I actually missed a bracket myself. It actually appears the same, regardless of how I close my brackets. I swapped the ending two and it looks identical.
Here's my character, can someone look it over? I've never played Starfinder and I want to be sure I've not missed anything. I slowly shifted from Skill Monkey to Stealth Master now that Rogues are actually a good class.
Here she is!
However, I do have on weird issue. In my skill section, after Acrobatics I have
Acrobatics* +14 (1 Rank)
However, what I actually have typed in there is
Acrobatics* +14 (ooc)(smaller)(1 Rank)(/ooc)(/smaller)
But with brackets in place of parenthesis.
Acrobatics* +14 [ooc](1 Rank)
This is what it looks like when I copy the text out from editing my profile.
Here is a screenshot, so you can see how bizarre this is. In my first typing of Acrobatics, I have no closing brackets, or typing of smaller, yet it thinks there is. On the bottom, I do have closing details, but it thinks there isn't.
Unfortunately it's hard for me to explain my issue, as in my first row I only typed in Acrobatics* +14 (ooc)1 Rank, but with brackets, and it somehow filled in everything missing. I hope the image makes it easier to understand.
Sorry for a triple post.
Redalia and Hmm, if one is willing to supply their own copy of the Scenario, when is the deadline to GM for the Outpost event?
I'm not trying to put the cart before the horse here, but it seems like it would be a wonderful place to get some experience.

If someone else is bringing one they'd like to use however, I don't mind trying another class! To expand on this, it looks like I'm going a "Female" Android Operative with Ghost Specialization and Spacefarer theme. The Android that dreams of seeing every world in the galaxy! Will of course be a Sneaky Skill Monkey. Excited to try piloting!
I admit I came in mostly just to apply this to Pathfinder, but after reading the rules I'm very excited to play Starfinder.

GM Redelia wrote: I'll be providing you guys with step by step instructions for setting up a slide deck, so don't jump ahead on me, guys. :) Just make the list of what you need. You can either share it or just keep it for yourself. Oops, sorry. I stole the idea to use Slides from PFS to use in an online campaign I've ran in the past so was a little eager haha.
Ah, sorry about that. Alright, I'm all good to go on ruleset! Tonight I'll be making a Starfinder Character, and setting up slides for my portion. Thanks again for having me and being understanding!
Apologies for the delay, having a bit of a work emergency and still won't be home for several hours. If Wayfinders is available and had a focus on material that can easily translate to Pathfinder, I'll happily take it. I don't have the book to read right now, it's downloaded on my computer at home.
1: Windows 10
2: Adobe PDF Reader
3: A mix of Chrome and Firefox. From my phone I use Chrome, from my computer I use Firefox.
I've been reading the Starfinder Rules but haven't finished yet, will read The Commencement tonight and get back to you on which I'd like to GM!
1: I've played Pathfinder extensively for years, have never played Starfinder.
2: I've GMed Pathfinder in person for years as well, though only with the single group.
3: I have only played PFS officially for the past couple months, but I've used PFS rules for my home games.
4: My extent of GMing PFS extends to using PFS rulings and modules/scenarios in home games.
5: I have played by post here on Paizo for the past couple months, I have played other oddball RPGs online in the past, such as Dark Conspiracy and a Marvel RPG.
6: I have not.
7: How to build a good scene, make sure players don't lose interest, and keep action moving WITHOUT railroading.
Will be reading Starfinder rules ASAP!
I'm copying this from another thread I made, as I was advised to post it here.

It says nothing about ignoring the Int 13 requirement of those feats, which doesn't seem intentional because with an Int of at least 3, they can take those feats without them being on the Animal List anyway.
Is this a mistake?
