We’re actually much better off creating a single, stable edition. It’s easier for fans, it’s better for continuity for writers and designers, and it’s much easier in terms of creating a long-term product strategy. It would be great if the playtest feedback was such that we felt comfortable dropping any reference to editions or numbers in the final game’s title.
That flies in the face of the conventional wisdom that game companies have a vested financial interest in the edition treadmill. I'm left wondering what exactly Mike means by "much better off".

I have some ideas:

1) They talk about modularity, so I gues they will do a "Basic" Book that gives you the fundamental rules and mechanics of the new game.

2) Next they will expand with "Option" Books that modify the game to suit you playstyle. I guess there will be an "old school" option book, an "3rd edtion" option book and a "4th edition" option book.

3) Then might come the Option Books that modify where the characters have their adventures. This will be like the environmental books (e.g. Frostburn) but much more fokussed on the DM.

4) Then they might explore some of their old campaihn settings. They will focus much more on fluff than on crunch. So a new Planescape Campaign Setting (one can always have dreams, yes?) would focus on how the DM can create a PS campaign.

5) As shown in 1)-4)I guess WoC will now switch their material from being player focussed to being DM focussed. After all, the DM is the one with the difficult job and needs help the most.

6) I guess WoC takes some Ideas from PAIZO and will produce player focussed "Splat Books" sparingly. I think that these Books will be about more options that you can create with existing material(like PAIZOs Archetypes). To retain a solid game, it is essential not to churn out "Feats" and "Prestige Classes" or "Powers"(or the 5th edition equivalent. This will unbalance the core rules due to a power creep. It happened with 3rd edition and it is happening with 4th edition (or so I gather).

I guess with this reprint the gauge the demand for reprinted material.
If it meets their expectations they will probably distribute the reprints in other countries too.
And if that is a success, they might even reprint other materials. The Rules Cyclopedia comes to mind.
These reprints might bridge the income gap until 5th edition is released.

And yeah, I want a reprint too.

Hi Paizo Team,

please cancel Order nr.: 1803445

Thanks and have a nice Christmas!

My daughter is 2, so a little bit young for playing the game.
But she loves to look at the pictures in the Monster Books. Bestiary I and II, WotC Draconomicon etc.
Her absolute Favorite at the moment is "Dragons Revisited".
She already knows the colours of the Dragons and the names of the Examples.
Me, pointing at a Dragon Head:" And what is this?"
She:"Loaralis a Blue Dragon"

Hi,

please cancel my PF RPG subscription. I really don't need the Beginners Box.
When it is out, I will re-subscribe.

@Bluenose and ProfessorCirno:

Monte talks about the CONCEPT of passive perception not the skill in 4th edition call passive perception.

The latter is only the application of the former in 4th edition.

Sorry but I just can't wait for the book anymore. I'd lose more money if Paypal remits the money to me in philippine pesos as the exchange rate dropped several times against the dollar.

Well, you can also have a USD credit on your Paypal account and use it for your next shopping.

I am German and the exchange rate is lousy, so I have some 80 USD credit in my paypal account.

Ed Greenwood did a series like that Knights of Myth Drannor which had I think 7 or 8 main characters in it. I would love to see similar style novels. Plus they would help be a gateway into Pathfinder RPG if they read like the type of adventures most groups would play or like to play.

+1

That would rock!

While I haven't looked into the legal aspects in detail, I don't think that there's an OGL for OD&D, or BECM D&D, or AD&D. They were published before the OGL existed, and I don't think it retrospectively makes them OGL product. Yet the clones exist. So it's somehow possible, and will presumably be just as possible with 4e rules.

All clones that I know of (Labyrinth Lord, Osric, Swords & Wizardry, Lamentations of the Flame Princess RPG, Castles & Crusades Swords & Spellcraft to name a few) explicitely use the OGL.

All adventures, rules additions etc. that I know of use the OGL.

The clone creators take the SRD and twist the rules there to resemble (not equal) the rules of older editions.
Retro-design is possible as the 3rd edition has its foundations firmly rooted in older editions. Vancian Magic System for example.

Cloning a 4th edition rulebook from the SRD might be near impossible technically. 4th edition has almost no foundations in 3rd edition. Vancian Magic system for example.
When the next edition comes around, WoC might not sue fans who put 4th edition stuff or even small publishers. But I am sure that they will sue medium to big publishers like Paizo for putting out 4th edition stuff using the OGL.

Perhaps Paizo could put out an anthology of the best third-party Pathfinder material either as a dead-tree book or in PDF format?

Now that is a cool idea.

Monte Cook once did a "best of OGL year xxxx".
Maybe Paizo can do something like "Best of Pathfinder RPG compatible 2010" too?

People are still playing OD&D, 1st edition AD&D, 2nd edition AD&D, various incarnations of BECM D&D, or clones thereof. There'll be people playing 4th edition in twenty years, just as there'll be people playing 3rd edtion and it's clones.

Right, there are people still playing the original editions. But for a newbe it is kind of hard and very expensive to buy into OD&D. The 2 lbbs go for about 100 USD at ebay.

But wait, you mentioned the clones.
Why do you think Mythmere, Goblinoid Games and the other champions of the OSR movement are able to reporduce said clones?
ONLY THE OGL gives them the chance to do this without the threat of a lawsuit from WoC.
But there is NO OGL for 4th edition. So when 5th comes around there is no legal way to reproduce the rulebooks or develop new adventures etc.

@Snorter: Less power in exchange for more versatility is the way to go.

Monte Cook did this for his Arcana Unearthed/Evolved.
Spellcasters there generally have more spells per day and more versatile spells but less powerfull ones.
And 3.5 and AE PCs can adventure together, without Issues (as long as 3.5 only use 3.5 sources and vice versa).

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

I do not mind waiting for the stuff Nick proposed. Even if it takes 2+ years longer than anticipated*.
I can fully understand that the new job takes far more time than he thought it would.
I also understand that he doe not frequent his webpage every day.

But I am really, really disappointed that he seems not to be able or willing to stop by once a week for a few minutes to read the shoutbox and/or post some updates on the forums.

*I wait far longer for the next G.R.R.Martin book to come out.

Pay it with a Feat "Here to Last"

Agreed, this series can stand beside these epics. And it is finished! Althought the ending feels a little bit rushed. Kearney once stated that he wants to rewrite the ending as he had to finish it in a hurry to meet the deadline.

As a sidenote: Like in ASoIaF many of Characters die in Kearneys books. But all of the important characters die very unspectacular deaths instead of heroic ones.

The lure of Gold? Place the Noamd's account together with some treasure and another letter from an explorer, speculating about the riches to be gained there. That will most probably get the PCs down.

If they do not get the idea themselves suggest to them to buy a teleport instead of a 2-3 month trip south.

I think that it is very good. What I really like and what stands apart from most other D20 mass combat systems is that you do not have to eliminate a unit. In Fact it is pretty hard to kill them to the last man. But it is comapartively easy to rout them and make them flee the battlefield. Having read a few books about warfare this is how battles were won.

I prefer this to both Cry Havoc and Fields of Blood as it is much faster to set up and play.

@ P.H. Dungeon: How did you handle the Traps in 3.5?

I have been long thinking if it is possible to port the "ToH experience" from the older edition to the new ones.

IMHO ToH is all about Players (not PCs) using every ounce of their wits to somehow pass the traps, riddles and oddities. For the original ToH the party composition really does not matter. Nor, apart from the few fights, does PC level really matter. For example, Rob Kuntz with his Lord Robilar defeated the ToH as a one man show.

Long and careful description of each player what he does and how he does it is the key to success (or failure) in the older edition of ToH.

That said, in the RAW, the Skill solution systems in 3rd and 4th edition would theoretically allow to bypass the traps with a a few die rolls. It would also be theoretically possible to bypass a riddle with a skill or attribute check ("come on, my Wizard has Int. 20 and knowledge Mathematics +15, I have to get a check...").

So, how would you handle this Player knowledge vs. PC skill dilemma?

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

The beauty of C&C is that you can change things very easily. If you want driders to cast net at will, just let them do it!

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

Lou Agresta has taken over editing RC and is in full swing now. You can read more about it on the Sinister Forum.

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

We are talking about converting th e 3.5 Warlock from Complete Arcane (?) to C&C, yes?

IMHO the main theme of the Warlock was that he was able to cast damaging spells over and over again (eldritch blast)
And use some spells to buff himself up or hinder other creatures.

First to balance the C&C Warlock against the other Spellcasters we have to somehow put a "price" on the ressource eldritch blast.
He might be able to use it 1+ Main Attribute bonus times a day "free of charge" but has to "pay" 1d4 hp drain each time he casts it after that.

Of course he would have to have good hp. 1d6 or even 1d8.

For the invocations you can create a small list of spells he can cast each day. Like the Cleric he would have to "meditate" to get the spells (although his spells are not divine and the source is not the gods).

What do you think of DA (i.e., the system, the setting, etc.)?

Now I am not dm4hire but also have an opinion:

I really like the old style vibe that the age system gnerates. It runs smooth for most of the normal situations and the Stunt mechanic is really innovativ and fun.
But waht I like best is simplicity of the age system. You basically can create another race or class on the fly.
Even if we only know the first 5 levels, I do not think that Chris Pramas will add convoluted rules down the way to 20th level.
I think progression will be straitforward.
What he will certainly do is adding more options to the system so players can customize their characters better.

I do not really care for the Dragon Age setting. I have not played the computer game and have more than enough settings I can use.
I think I might use the age system to run my group through a Golarion version of Hommlet & the Moathouse

spoiler:
I will place the whole Hommlet/Moathouse/Temple somewhere in Taldor. But it is not Demons and Evil Elementals but Devils this time. Cheliax has big secretn plans involving opening a handy gate to Hell. There will be a timeline which involves abducting sacrifices, preparation of the big ritual, the rital. The longer the PCs take, the less likely they will be able to stop the fun.

This looks like a good product, but it should be made clear that a lot of the lore information in the book comes from extant sources, most notably the existing Guardian of Order d20/Tri-Stat rulebook published in 2005. Unlike the Guardian of Order team, Green Ronin did not get the same level of cooperation from GRRM and the Westeros.org team that GoO did, and as a result the book will have little or no exclusive new information about the setting. The index is VERY similar to the existing world information in the GoO book.

For those without access to the GoO book, or those who want the new rules information in the book, it looks like being a very good purchase.

Hmm, I would like to know where you got the information about "who had how much cooperation from GRRM" from.

As far as I know, GRRM fully endorsed the GR version of ASOIF too.
Even after his not so good experience with GoO folding and leaving him without information of what would happen to the game and the license.
