I'm doing one about a candy apple red 1977 Trans Am that was boosted from this dude's trailer outside of Twin Falls. See, the fella just won four tickets on the radio to an Def Leppard concert in Spokane and rushes out of the house to pick up his best bud when he notices that his mean machine, the Red Raven, is gone. Next to the burn out marks in the gravel he spots one of his ex-girlfriend's AA tokens and knows that she took his ride to sell it to a pool shark in Billings. So the guy gathers all sorts of colorful characters from the trailer park and they head out in Scooter's tow truck to reclaim his cherry muscle car and make it to the show in time. The reward...the other three tickets and a kick ass time rockin' out, drinkin' some brews and checkin' out tha ladies.

I never considered that sellers might be offering inventory that they didn’t have, waiting for someone to buy it and then purchasing it at a lower price either at Amazon or one of the other retailers.

Arbitrage !

This is torture. Did Tensor hack the Gibson? Does Pygon have pizza? What nasty links did Karelzarath find today? Did the pmg get moar coffee? Did Chris the Robot push all the buttons? Are the Canadians still Canadian? What new products will Lilith tempt Thursty with?

How am I supposed to get any news with chat down?

Light Sabers. If they can fight with Axes in underground tunnels, why not light sabers??

Hammers, chisels, and Pick Axes, because Dwarves are miners.

He is totally wrong getting out of his car and is escalating the situation. There is no excuse for that.

If your wife had a gun in the car and shot him dead, and I was on the jury, assuming it went that far, I would clear her.

An interesting question came up recently in a PFS scenario I as playing at the local convention last weekend. Our cleric was trying to use his heavy shield to bash an enemy because it was more effective than using his scimitar (the enemy had DR/bludgeoning).

Clerics gain Shield Proficiency as a feat, but not Martial Weapon Proficiency (shields). Using a shield to bash is specifically listed as a martial bludgeoning weapon. The question is: Does the Shield Proficiency feat grant the ability to bash with said shield without the usual non-proficiency penalty? Or must a character possess Martial Weapon Proficiency in order to bash without penalty?

Here's why there is confusion: Improved Shield Bash lists ONLY Shield Proficiency as a prerequisite and makes no mention of Martial Weapon Proficiency. This means that a cleric could take Improved Shield Bash and STILL be swinging at a -4 penalty when using the bash. In a similar vein, it would be possible for a character to take Martial Weapon Proficiency (shield) and NOT have Shield Proficiency, meaning the shield's armor check penalty would apply to his attack rolls.

The DoD’s main research arm, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA, has announced that they will be awarding $500,000 in seed money to one of a number of various organizations that will be in the running to take on a 100-year research project that will be tasked to design a business plan for the eventual development of interstellar travel.

We know the Earth is finite, and at some point in our history
we will need to start thinking about traveling to other places in the universe.

Now is a good time!

I think America needs a new "space program" or technology program to
stimulate business development, and ultimately our economy.

If we can become ripe with ideas, and develop new technology to spawn
new industry, then we can train our citizens and put them to work. Peeps
will have jobs, and make money (again).

Ah, the future is so bright.

A bunch of people splitting off to form their own government (world)
(playground) -- whatever -- seems like a dream that never goes away.

My assumption is this island will just become a huge Roman Orgy.
Then once the booze and money runs out they will get hungry and go home.

But, I have to wonder if we humans will ever colonize another planet.
Being on another planet ups the ante considerably, because when you get
tired and want to go home... you can't.

This will never come to pass. There is no profit motive, or atleast, not
a high enough profit motive to move the current forces at work into this
particular alignment.

Btw, I looked at the picture, but didn't read the article, because
reading is hard.

I'm keeping an open mind however.

Batman could kick Conan's ass every day including Sundays.

The Batman fiasco:

Batman sneers, “Look at me Conan I’m a neurotic basket case, because I watched my parents get murdered. Don’t mess with me because I’ll kill you! You hear me Conan, I’m so crazy I’ll kill you!”

Batman flaps around a bit. “Look at my cool black cape, and all my cool toys.” Then, screams a bit louder, “I’m Batman. Stay back, I’ll kill you!”

Conan rolls off of Trillia the wench, “Woman I have to make water. Get rid of that annoying insect over there.” Conan points at Bat Munch (I mean Man?).

Trillia draws a lady’s dagger and quick as a willow-wisp stabs Batman through the eye socket, piercing his brain. His dead body falls backward out an open window, into a waiting alley below.

She smiles, “Hehee Conan will be so pleased with me.” Trillia lies back down in bed giving her hair a little flick, so as to please Conan’s eye.

Also Hitler breathed air should we all stop breathing? </rhetorical question>

Also, a three party political system put Hitler into power. Therefore,

we should never have more than two parties (the Democrats and the Republicans.)

I'm glad we got this straightened up.

Quite frankly I think the Democrats and Republicans a very similar in
what they want to accomplish. Plus, they are ALL American. So, as long
as we have Americans in power over America things should be fine.

It would be bad if we had to bend to the will of another country. I guess
this could only happen if they have more money than us. It is a good thing
we have printing presses. This way we can print more money whenever we
want to and be rich.

Now some people think this is crazy talk, but I just point out to them that
vampires do not really exist. Real crazy people are running around
pretending to be vampires and attempting to drink other people's blood.

We all need money, so should we not print money and pretend to be vampires??

.

Now you have me thinking... do vampires need money? I guess they do in
order to influence their mortal helpers. I don't know much about vampires,
but I did see that movie "Escape from the Vampire Lestrat". (wait...
maybe it was the movie "Escape from New York".) Well, speaking of movies
did you see the movie "Big Trouble in Little China"? I love that movie.

Recently, I was in San Fransisco. I went stomping around China Town
looking for Lo Pan's hide out. I walked a good three miles before it
occurred to me that Lo Pan has a secret underground lair. Oh man!
That would be cool to see.

Was Lo Pan a vampire??

Janet begs to disagree.

It is moments like these when I think maybe it is not a bad thing to

have insane people around. I mean if we can harness their power of
mayhem, and figure out a way to aim them we indeed have a great tool.
Maybe the word 'weapon' fits better.

Janet Reno has charisma of about 5. Some dudes are turned on by her
(by turned on I mean they look at her and start getting a boner, and I
have to hope that these same men also get turned on by sheep and large
dogs. Because then my world has logical consistency.) Anyways, I hope
to combine these two concepts: insane people who are used as a weapon,
and Janet Reno atrociousness.

This is how it can work. Janet Reno can walk casually through a city
landscape all the while scantily dressed. This will draw all the men
who are attracted to her out into the streets. We can use our insane-person
weapon system and shoot all these men at people who pretend to be vampires.

There. My secret plan has been revealed.

Vampires beware.

Now I'm wondering how this aiming system operates. I mean, is it like
mind control. You turn some dial and press some buttons causing
radio waves to emanate from a pointy antenna. These radio waves then
affect the thought-processes of insane people in a manner that allows
you to control them, and direct their actions. Bull s+$!! That is
1950's sci-fi crap. I loathe that kind of crap. Radio waves, ray guns,
etc. We may as well invent time-travel and go back to the future.

I think it will have to use quantum radio waves. Yay, that's much better.
Some how the word quantum makes everything better. Perhaps it does not
make things more understandable, but it makes imaginary concepts hip and
up-to-date.

Still, using quantum radio-waves can not work. Because, again, that makes no sense.

Does anyone know how to build a mind control device? I have to assume
that if you do you will not post directions to assemble one here. But
maybe you will. I think you will.

I bet pmg knows how to build mind control devices. He built this web site
and as far as I can tell many, many people are being held in thrall.
Hee.. "in thrall". I like it on Firefly when Mal yells at Inara for
holding Kaylee in thrall. I really like the TV show Firefly...
I don't remember any mind control devices being used, or Janet Reno
being used as a defensive barrier.

Ok. Thanks for your assistance.

Vampires suck.

I am trying to imagine what must have been going through that dudes
head. (As an aside, if he had been a bug hitting the windshield of a car
going 50mph I would have to think his ass.) But I digress.

That dude must have lost contact with reality. His mind must have been
operating in a way such that reality was no longer concrete.
I suppose playing some types of games may exacerbate this type of
mentation (I think i just made that word up. I am trying to combine
cognitive skill with imagination in a way that correctly maps/models
how reality actually works. At least, in a first-approximation kinda
of way.) Anyways, he must have believed the person he attacked could
not suffer from his actions. I'm only beginning on this analysis.

As to motivation, he must have believed blood has the blood-powers.
Blood is the stuff of life, but the machinery of our human bodies can
not take blood of another and combine it with, or enhance, personal
affect. Once again, I have no idea what I am saying, so let's move on.

Let's talk about games. How can games fit into all of this. I suppose
if a the game's system is good enough to simulate another world, and
one plays enough of it, one may begin to act in accordance with the
games' rules at the expense of how our universe actually functions.

A good example of such games is religion. Religion is a game for sure.
And it is easy to see examples of people who take on the mental mind
set created in the rules of their religion, and then begin to project
those rules and that game onto reality -- regardless of experiencing
real-world contradiction(s).

Anyways, did you notice that guy looks like Jason Borne? I wonder if
there will ever be a Jason Borne vampire movie. I think such a movie
would be cool. But after this crazy dudes actions it wouldn't surprise
me if critics would say, "This is exactly the problem." Vamparism is
put on a high pedestal, and no wonder some humans get lost in its
world with all of its rules that closely simulate a reality born of mind
and thought... I forgot where I was going with this. (I think I just
made up another word, 'vamparism').

It looks to me like that man is wearing eyeshadow. Why do vampires
wear eyeshadow? Oh wait... I know. To cover up the unnatural
whiteness of their dead skin. Hmm... good idea. I'll have to use that
one.

I have seen the first Twilight movie, but not the next two. They keep
showing the first one on TV and not the last two. Will someone get
this fixed, so I can watch them on TV. I mean, there is no way I would
pay money to see these movies.

This is kinda like Lord of the Rings. 'Fellowship' is showed aaalll
the time, and we never see on TV 'Towers' or 'Return of the King'. It
would be cool if they always played them together, one after the other,
from part 1 to part 3. Then, sitting and watching TV the full effect
could be had. (I understand this is a movie of the revised books.)

Well, I'm kinda tired. Think I'll go home now.

.

Oh yay. Vampires suck.

Bayesian Tracking
―――――――――――

You have designed a MARS ROVER. (good job)

It has a sensor that can detect the density of some rock.

Unfortunately the sensor is noisy. The number returned by the sensor is: x = 3∙d + N(3, 100), where
d is the actual density, and N(μ, σ²) specifies a Gaussian distribution with mean μ and variance σ².
You decide to use a Bayes’ filter to help overcome the noise of the sensor and to help you
detect which type of rock you are sensing.

Here are rough numerical approximations to the sensor model in tabular form.

......................................Sensor Output............................................
...........|..x < 2..|..2 < x < 8..|..8 < x < 14..|..14 < x < 20..|..x > 20
D....0..|...0.46...|......0.23......|.......0.18.........|........0.09..... ..|......0.04
E
N....2..|...0.24...|......0.22......|.......0.23.........|........0.17..... ..|......0.14
S
I....4..|....0.10...|......0.15......|.......0.22.........|........0.23.... ...|......0.30
T
Y....6..|...0.03...|......0.07......|.......0.15.........|........0.22..... ..|......0.53

(a) Derive Bayes’ rule for two probabilities (starting with a Venn diagram).
P(A|B) =?

(b) Which type of Bayes’ filter is most appropriate for this problem: a Kalman
filter, a particle filter or a table based Bayes’ filter. Why?

  • For the rest of this question we will assume a table based filter (because it is easiest to ask
questions about, don’t assume it is the best for the question above simply because the following
    questions use it):

    (c) What is your state representation for your table based filter?

    (d) What is your initial state assuming you have no idea what sort of rock you
    are currently sensing?

  • Your sensor returns output of 3 when sensing a rock for the first time.

    (e) What is the your new state?

    (f) At this point, what is your best estimate as to what density of rock you are
    sensing?

  • You sense the same rock again, and this time get receive output of −1.

    (g) What is your new state?

    (h) At this point, what is your best estimate as to what density of rock you are sensing?

    Spoiler:

[ you have 10 minutes for this problem ]
