You are probably awarding XP at or near the rate intended in the DMG. From your description I can see no fault in your method.

That said. I have a personal preference for slower xp gain. In serious campaigns I tend to award about 1/3 the standard experiance award per encounter, and then I also try to incorporiate as many apropriate story awards as possible. The characters end up progressing at about the half the standard rate. I prefer theis pacing much more.

Does anyone know where I can find a collection of map symbols for standard self drawn maps. I am not looking for tiles or anything like that, just a comprehensicve key of standard dungeon symbols.

thanks

My players made the mistake of casting a web spell in the center of the room. The Kua-toans were unaffected due to their slipperiness, and ashuanna just flew above it after breaking free.

One of the Rangers Three uses his boots of striding and springing well though and managed to jump from the balcony and grapple the devil before she could massacre the entire group. They only managed this on the third attempt. Only the soft mattress of webbing on the floor prevented him from dying in the two previous attempts.

I loved it when the entire group was stuck in the webbing, and ashuanna let it on fire with her flaming long bow.

DeadDMWalking has hit upon the true answer I think. As a DM I am the only one in my games that spends hours preparing for games. I own the most material. And, it is my game. I think that to truly have a since of possesion for the game, you have to have either DM'd once, or be currently DMing now. Unfotunately I also think that that is why Dungeon will always have a smaller yet more vocal readership. Dragon is great, but in my little corner of the Roleplaying universe it is the story that is most important, and that story is usually to be had within the covers of Dungeon.

My issues arrive sparodically now, but back when I used to purchase them over the counter, Dragon would always be neglected until I had ravaged Dungeon at least once.

My son is one year old, and I cannot wait for him to possibly enjoy the wonder and thrills that I experienced as a new gamer. I remember rewriting word for word the tracking entry for my ranger Rudd from the AD&D player's handbook. If he isn't interested, that's cool, but he is my son, genes are in my favor.

Non service members would be surprised how many military gamers there are. I am on deployment at the moment, and there are so many people who want to play once they find out about our game, that I will soon be running three different weekly games.

I too am interested in knowing more about Ghostorb. My game group while deployed is kind of diverse, and will go its seperate ways once we are demobilized. I was hoping that Ghostorb would be a way for us to keep gaming together. But I would really love to hear from others that have already used it to host their games. There was also another online gaming engine, Fantasy adventures or something. I can't remember what it was called, but it had a great interface.

I am currently running the Shackled City AP for three players whose characters are known as the "Rangers Three." They all sons of the same mother, but have different fathers. One is a Ranger/Rogue, one is a Ranger/Wizard, and the other is a Ranger/Cleric. They do not intend to multiclass further than this.
The players came up with this tie in on their own, and even have this little Barbershop Quartet like, Power Ranger-ish dance that they perform as the Rangers Three.

"Grimlocks are blind, but their exceptional senses of smell and hearing allow them to notice foes nearby."
"Grimlocks can sense all foes within 40 feet as a sighted creature would." MM140

I have not read the adventure yet, and probably not be able to for a couple weeks yet, but I think that if the characters are carrying any kind of non-magical flaming light source, the Grimlocks should be able to target them via said source.

I shall now add my name to the long line of pirates eagerly looking for new material to steal.

i am about to run the second chapter of the shackled city ap for my players, tomorrow in fact, but there is an aquatic devil called a skulvyn and i do not know where to look to find a complete discription of this creature in any of the monster manuals. i looked but could not find an entry. was this creature created just for that encounter, or am i just missing it somewhere. Any help is appreciated.

I do not usually receive my issues until my wife sends me my monthly care packages. The current issue will probably not arrive until around the end of June. I envy you your love hate relationship with your mailbox.

I am also running the AP at this moment, but I have taken a really scrooge-like view on experience as opposed to how I usually handle it. I figured that it was really important for the character's levels to be consistant with the story.

Another thing I have done is award about 75% of the XP and treasure per adventure so that between adventures I can run short scenarios the showcase specific Eberron elements and stories. In these aventures I award the remaining 25% of XP and treasure. My players seem to have no problems with this arrangement.

I cannot speak for prisoners, but I can say for sure that is is very rare these days for a soldier not to have regular access to the internet, even in Iraq. Hence my ability to post this. The cover art is indeed awesome, and now that we have the guarantee that there will be one installment every month until the AP's conclussion, I just may run it for my group over here. Thank you for a wonderful magazine, and for the many to come.
Tam

"YES", I have used and will continue to use Eberron specific material that appears in Dungeon. I haven't found it difficult to adapt material between Eberron and Generic/GH, and my group is currently enjoying the Shackled City AP in Eberron. Cauldron is set in the Graywall Mountains on the border between Breland and Droaam.

I never got around to using a map of mystery, though I still considered them a good addition to the magazine. I think that Paizo is making a great decision to make untagged versions of the map available for download. Now if maybe we can get the magazine's detractors to realize the each powerful NPC is a potential Critical Threat, we will be getting somewhere.

I for one enjoy every issue that arrives in my mailbox. I am playing in the sandbox right now, so my magazines arrive quite a bit late, but I still relish every free moment I am able to spend reading Dungeon. The Shackled City AP has been a real life saver, I and my friends are really enjoying it. I didn't find it difficult at all to adjust to Ebberron. I deffinately do not have the time right now to create my own adventures, though that is my great love. It has probably been said and will probably be said again, purhasing the magazine is your choice, not one that the folks at Paizo has forced on you. My money is well spent.

Thanks, that clears it up. I will have to only post campaign updates for games that I am not specificaly using as material for my stories.

Never let the dream die.

These replies have all been great. Thanks.

I have a another question though. I recently had my wife e-mail me a ten dollar microphone from radioshack. I plan to record our game sessions, and then turn the game into a story. I would also like to post updates on the campaign as it takes place in the campaigns section. The feedback that that would allow me to receive would be invaluable. What I want to know is, if something is posted on these messageboards, does it remain my intellectual property or does Wizards somehow then have a claim on it. I can't say with absolute certainty that what I write will be good enough to publish, but it has always been a dream of mine. Thanks again, please let me know if there is another venue where I should address this issue.

Thanks for the input, and keep it coming. I have recently discovered the Grim and Gritty Hit Point and Combat system. It seems to be exactly what I am looking for.

I must admit ignorance about the "Styes" setting. Could you illustrate.

I am currently on deployment in Iraq and am about to DM a game for a group of my fellow soldiers. The game I want to run is more realistic than the typical high fantasy of D&D. The Unearthed Arcana book has been an immense help to me for designing the specific house rules that will give the game the feel that I desire. I wish to list a few of the changes I am going to make to the core rules so that I may get input from other players and DMs. Maybe there are options that I have yet to consider, perhaps the options that I am taking advantage of will have an, as yet unrealized by me, negative impact on the game.

First, I think the characters will earn about 30% of the standard xp award for any given encounter or challenge. I like how this will slow down advancement to a level that is, thought still fantastic, a little more realistic.

Second, every character will start the game with one level in either an npc class or one of the generic classes as presented in UA. I will probably go with the npc classes because I like the idea of the characters starting out as everyday people who then are forced or choose to deviate from their normal lives for one reason or another.

Third, I like the Bell Curve rule from UA. Rolling 3d6 instead of a d20 for action resolution and checks will result in less critical successes and failures, but when they do happen it will bo more spectacular not, "Ho hum, another crit."

Fourth, there will bo no magics that alow resurection or reincarnation. I want the players to fear for their characters, not confident in the knowledge that the high level priest in the next town can bring them back to life.

Fifth, I am going to use a version of the Defense and Armor Damage Reduction variants. Armor will no longer determine whether or not a character was hit, but instead decide how much damage was ignored by vitrue of the armor's stopping power, and how much damage is only subdual as the armor absorbs some but not all of it.

Sixth, the players will be making their own defense rolls as well as attack rolls. I like the players feeling that the fate of their characters is in their hands.

I know that some of these options will make the game more complicated and slow it down some, but I think that in the end that it will be worth it. There are probably some other house rules that I will be using that I cannot remember off the top of my head.

Amyway let me know what you think. Do you have a house rule that would work great with this setup? Is one of these options going to bring me more pain than pleasure?

Thanks for the input.

Power Gaming is more a personal choice than it is a component of the particular game system.

I recently ordered all the magazines that contain the Shackled City, adventure path, with plans to run it as an Ebberon compaign while on my up-coming deployment in Iraq. I had thought that I would have to do a serious amount of adjusting considering that Ebberon characters tend to be slightly more heroic. But after reading the "how many character deaths" thread I think that the adventures may play well as is, with only adjustments for setting and atmosphere necesary. As DMs more experienced with the campaign, what do you think? I would also be happy to hear any suggestions that you have that may assist me. Thanks, and happy gaming.
