FYI, everyone, it's not one round, it's two rounds. The first round gets the top 101 monsters and is judged by RPG professionals. The second round is public and ranks the monsters into the winning tiers.

It's a bit different, but that was done to accommodate the judges and after a lot of feedback from past judges of the RPG Superstar contest.

Hey all, for those of you new I'd like to introduce you to the Roll For Combat Actual Play Podcast!

So what are you playing on the podcast?
Currently, we have two actual play podcasts -- the Starfinder Dead Suns Adventure Path and The Fall of Plaguestone Pathfinder Adventure. You can find them both here:
• Starfinder Dead Suns Adventure Path: http://rollforcombat.com/tag/dead-suns/
• The Fall of Plaguestone: http://rollforcombat.com/tag/the-fall-of-plaguestone/

So what is your group's playstyle?
On both podcasts, we play a mixture of "rules as written" (we play as closely as possible to the original rules) and role-playing. The Dead Suns podcast is a bit more "beer and pretzels" type of game, where we make jokes and rag on each other during the show. While the Plaguestone podcast is heavily into roleplaying and a bit more serious.

How are you playing?
Since we are scattered throughout the country we play online using a mixture of Discord and D20Pro.

How often do you post your show?
The Fall of Plaguestone podcast posts every Tuesday and the Dead Suns podcast posts every Friday.

What else do you do on the show?
We have a large number of interviews on the show, which you can view here: http://rollforcombat.com/tag/interviews/

We also play Starfinder Society games, which you can view here: http://rollforcombat.com/tag/starfinder-society/

We also review most Paizo hardcover books, which you can view here: http://rollforcombat.com/tag/reviews/

I hear you also play games on your Discord channel?
Yes, we are an official Paizo Lodge for Play-by-Discord games. You can learn how to join or run a game over at our Discord channel. Games are running all the time and we run both Pathfinder and Starfinder games. You can join our Discord here: http://discord.rollforcombat.com

Over at Roll For Combat, we are proud to announce our new show, Roll For Combat Starfinder Society! We have the original five Roll For Combat Crew — Stephen Glicker, John Staats, Jason McDonald, Chris Beemer, and Bob Markee — playing on the show. However, since Society works best with six player characters we have Rob Trimarco and Pazio’s Jason Keeley joining us as well!

For our first adventure, we decided to jump right into the deep end with Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Scenario #1-10: The Half-Alive Streets.

This is going to be a regular occurrence and we’ll be playing through all of the various Starfinder Society adventures (plus our Dead Suns as well). Check it out!

I am on the Gencon GM team and this is a known issue. They said they would be releasing a method to repair your drone shortly after release this week. It appears that he rules were accidentally removed from the final book as there are allusions throughout on repair, but nowhere does it describe how you do it.

Have you considered making your Starfinder files available to the D20Pro community? I am sure they would be greatly appreciated and we all would be grateful of your work, Stonesnake.

Actually I have been in touch with the D20Pro dev team and they are combining my files with theirs when they release the Starfinder rules for D20Pro very shortly (should be within the next week or so).

From what I know they are updating the D20Pro rules to allow for KAC, EAC, and Stamina Points for now and will then add more functionality shortly after (i.e. ship combat, etc.). Those three are the only items which D20Pro can't easily handle in its current state (you can fake it pretty easily however).

I've actually already run a few games of Starfinder, with ship combat, in D20Pro in it's current state (including my files) and it worked just fine.

If they don't release their update soon I'll release the files.

I bought D20Pro for $60 around 7 years ago, which includes 6 seats for my players, and I have used it for 1-2 games, per week, for 7+ years now.

And that's it. I have never bought anything for D20Pro ever again.

You can't beat that, period. All the rule sets have been free, all the monsters free, all the classes free, everything has been free.

Compare that to FG2 or Roll20 ... you can't. ALL of the VTT cost money now if you want to use any "real" features, and most of them make money by endlessly selling you new rule sets and upgrades, usually at the same price as the books themselves. To date everything I have ever needed on D20Pro has been free. The same rules on FG2 would have cost hundreds of dollars. All free on D20Pro.

And adding new rules is INSANELY easy with the XML editor. I added ALL of the classes, spells, feats, and skills from Starfinder into D20Pro in about 1 hour.

That is power.

Nothing beats D20Pro ... period.

As someone who has used D20Pro for over 7 years and tried to use Fantasy Grounds recently and Roll20 (yuck) D20Pro simply destroys everything else out there.

Well, I played Starfinder at Paizocon with Owen KC Stephens and he told us the rule was that you couldn't interrupt spellcasting anymore, all ready actions go after the foe performs his action. He explained in detail that since everyone has guns and access to a gun they had to simplify the ranged rules and make it viable for spellcasting to work, otherwise nothing would ever get cast with the old rules.

I am 100% sure that the rule works like it's described in the ready action section, it goes after the triggered event and that you move your initiative to after the foe.

We'll know for sure soon enough as everyone will be at Gen Con next week.

Last night I ran some starship combat with my group and out of all the new rules in Starfinder ... they completely nailed starship combat. My group has been together for more years than I remember and for the very first time they truly acting together and acted like a crew.

And, of course, they all fell right into their roles like a real starship. PCs were asking the Captain for commands, the Captain was encouraging and pushing them, the Science Officer was scanning the enemy ship, the Engineer was keeping the ship together ... it glorious to behold.

Regular combat is fun, but in the end everyone does their own thing when fighting the monster. But with starship combat everyone had to work together and with the given roles, people acted and sounded like a real starship crew.

At the end my players said that was one of the best experiences they ever had in RPGs, and I had to agree. It is a game changer!

If anyone wishes to follow along with an experienced group playing through Iron Gods feel free to check out our web site and detailed adventure logs:

https://iron-gods-13.obsidianportal.com/

We play once a week (mostly) and our group is crazy experienced.

The DM (myself) has been playing D&D for over 35 years and I've personally run over 500 Pathfinder gaming sessions and god only knows how many D&D sessions.

The players (there are only three?!) each have over 35 years of experience playing RPGs with most of them played through Age of Worms (DMed by me), Serpent's Skull, Rise of the Runelords, and Carrion Crown (Dmed by me). We also ran a 4e adventure from 1st level all the way up to level 20 ... so this is very experienced group.

We had issues getting a 4th player, so we are only running three PCs -- Barbarian/Oracle, Warpriest, and Sorcerer -- with the encounters not made any easier (if anything they are harder) and the same XP path as if they were running with four.

However these guys are having a VERY hard time with just three ... as you will see in the logs! But they are up to the challenge and it's about to get very interesting with Sanvil showing up unexpectedly with a group of ropefists...

I am having so much fun running the spooky optional events in HoH I wanted to see if we could try to come up with some new ones that other GMs could use when we run out of the 4 listed in the module. My goal is to continue to throw these events to the players and try to ramp them up as they get closer and closer to the ending of the module ... so I'm going to need a lot more!

I love how these effects can really mess with the PCs but without actually doing physical harm to them. Just my players knowing that at any time something horrible and uncontrollable might happen to them and from what I've seen running just two so far as really put them on edge like I have never seen.

I was trying to come up a with a few and I went to one of my favorite video games of all time for inspiration -- Eternal Darkness! For those not familiar with the game you are constantly hit by "insanity effects" throughout the game (the worst one being that at the very end of the game when you try to save your game it instead shows you deleting all your save files!). People still talk about that game being one of the most frightening games of all time as you just never knew when you would be hit with an effect.

Here are few that I could think of that might work well:

  • Blood will drip from the walls or ceiling while a PC is in a room in town or in the prison. But when the PC asks someone else if they can see it, the blood disappears.
  • Paintings on the walls will change their appearance while in town. They see the same scene as before, only now it's on fire and any people in the painting are in depicted in horrible agony.
  • Heads of statues will follow your movements when at The Restlands (not sure how to tie this into the rest of the module, but it seemed scary)

I realize that the specific Optional Events in the module are tied directly to Harrowstone so these might need to be slightly adjusted a bit (perhaps the heads of the statues fall off instead of follow the PCs, but that didn't seem quite as scary).

Anyone else have any good ideas?
