Caution: Contains mayor spoilers for “Ghost Dance” from Dungeon # 32.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

The old man survived the battle, and with some difficulty, a conversation takes place. The old man goes by the name of Kanowatha, he is one of the human people known as Flan, who have been the original inhabitants of these lands, many centuries back. There are only few pure Flan left, he is obviously one of them, with a rather dark, coppery skin and black hair. He tells the heroes that “Red Fox” has told him to take this Totem to the “iron humans from the lake” and give it to the first people he sees there – the heroes. Kanowatha seems to be a shaman to his people, he communes with the spirits regularly. This time, he asked the spirits because something was amiss. Some of his people were on the warpath, despite it being winter, which is not a time for war. Mahd thinks that the signs on the skull could hint at something divine behind it, and some older ones seem to indicate “protection”, newer ones “knowledge”. Kanowatha states that he hails from the people of the Gray Lynx, as do the now-dead attackers.

With an improvised map, the heroes try to find out where Kanowatha came from, but he can only tell them that his ride took about 12 or 14 days from his home to this spot. It is just half a days ride from Stahzer, and Violet thinks that the mage in Count Stahzers employ might be able to speak Flan, so it is decided to ride there, after the dead Flan get a quick burial. Stahzer is reached in the evening. The counts mage can indeed speak Flan, and he identifies the magical items the heroes managed to collect during their journey, while they have a longer conversation with count about their experiences. Violets letter of knighthood is marvelled at – it was presented to her by a legendary dead knight, which is quite extraordinary.

During the night, Violet has a very intensive dream, but remembers it only in vague terms the next morning. It dealt with Red Fox, a (Flan?) village above which dark clouds loom large, and her driving away the clouds to find or get something that glows golden.

The next morning, the mage reports what his Identification has brought: the skull had more potent magic, but might now just hold enough to cause a vivid dream. The finely wrought chain mail they found a while ago is of elven make and magical. It has at a time belonged to the legendary elven archer Larafallin, and seems to be part of a greater set of items.
The shield and the spurs that Violet holds seem to be part of a set as well.
Early next morning, already quite towards the end of the month of Ready´reat, the heroes ride forth anew, with them comes Kanowatha and a tracker with some Flan-blood named Dirak.
25th session, 22nd October 2008

I'm still afraid that this message may be a flame. However, I guess I'll have to risk it, because I wouldn't want you to mistake my motives.

I have nothing against BECMI (although I would prefer Pathfinder RPG rules.) However, when I create a character for any RPG, I'm accustomed to getting choices. For this game, you want the players just to roll 3d6 six times - presumably in order. Most likely, the result will have to be a raider. Maybe we'll get a lucky roll for INT or WIS and get one more option. And I won't even know if those options are worth it, because I'm not familiar with the Wicca / Shaman rules of GAZ10. But most likely, I'd have to be a fighter-type. With a -4 penalty to Strength. That doesn't sound like much of a character. What if I roll a 3 for strength? Will I end up with a negative 1?

Without any choices, why do you even need players to generate characters? You could have created them yourself.

Even in BECMI, I'm accustomed to choosing one of seven classes, three of which are really races. In addition - maybe I'm just spoiled - I'm accustomed to the roll-d6-four-times-and-take-the-best-three. More importantly, I'm accustomed to assigning the ability scores as I see fit, making character creation more of a "design-what-you-like" game, not a "slave-of-the-dice" game. I'm even accustomed, after all of that, to getting the option of lowering my STR, INT, or WIS by 2 to raising my Prime Requisite by 1, and continuing to do so until I raise my PR high enough to get a 10% bonus to XP (or even higher than that if I like.)

I'm not saying you have to follow every one of those rules, but I need choices. I need some control. Without choices, why play? Being able to play only one race is, right away, a turn-off for me. An unlucky set of rolls giving me only one class as well is a deal-breaker.

Of course, I could have rolled my ability scores first, and if I got lousy STR, INT, and WIS rolls, dropped out then. But then I would have looked like a sore loser.

It's nothing personal. I hope you have a good game. I'm sure it will be great fun for some players. It's just not for me.
I didn't explain my reasons for leaving because I was afraid of hurting your feelings, yellowdingo. I'm still afraid that this message may be a flame.
