I've been running a Marvel RPG campaign since the 1990s, and I actually really liked this system. It's open-ended enough that it's incredibly hard to break, there's little randomization in character creation, and it seems to have taken the best of most superheroic rpgs to make a highly flexible system that can generate a wide variety of characters and NOT make them overwhelming to each other. Good stuff and I'll be buying the rest of the line just as soon as someone explains how the Premium and Essentials versions work. :) Well done, guys... and the introduction by Jeff Grubb was a classy touch. I'm a must-buy kind of guy if this scheming ever gets off the ground, since I love virtually everyone that's mentioned wanting in's stuff. That said, if you guys can come up with a framework for cooperation in a business sense for this project, perhaps you might want to think about doing something like, say, Fantasy Flight Games's old Mastercraft Anthology for Free RPG Day sometime. For those that didn't see that product, it was a chapter or so of each of their hardcover books, complete with rules, monsters, base classes, prestige classes, races, feats, spells, etc. all collected as a teaser to draw customers to a larger product. Letting each 3PP submit a small amount of their content along with information about the rest of the product or line, as well as where to purchase it as an advertising tool would be a great way to get the knowledge of what's out there to the public that doesn't loiter on the Paizo site or ever check out much of the 3PP content. Just a thought... as a fan of so many of you guys, I'd really like to see more GMs utilizing what you bring to the game. Hey folks! It was my understanding that the print orders for the .pdf were to switch to a print/.pdf combo for the same price when that option became available. It apparently hasn't for me, and I would definitely like to get the combo. Also, this order's been lingering at "Pending" for some time now... is there a problem I need to be aware of? Thanks! So after a fellow poster mentioned Frog God Games Black Monastery, I've learned to my shock and horror that there are some 3PP products that exist in print that I haven't bought yet. This... needs to be corrected. So, I figured I'd ask you great bunch of guys to tell us what's out there in print, so I can go snap some more of it up. Stuff doesn't have to be for sale just at Paizo either... I'm willing to go elsewhere to spend my gold if I have to! So let's hear it! Even if I have already tossed them some cash, maybe it'll inspire someone else to add it to their shelves. I have always thought about running Ruins of Adventure as a military campaign. Have the PCs start as part of the force that takes the city itself, and then send them on missions for the rulership counsel as Special Operations troops to recapture the rest/work through the rest of the scenarios. Suits my group, at least. Everything mentioned is exceptionally good, especially Forgotten Foes, Tome of Monsters, Book of Monster Templates, Creepy Creatures, and the Fey Folio... and, of course, the Tome of Horrors, which basically has the state of being a religious text among gamers for a GOOD REASON.
As for stuff not previously mentioned, I really liked Malevolent and Benign for Pathfinder, as it has some useful niche monsters. The Dragonlance and Ravenloft monster books for 3.5 are really nice. I can't imagine running a game without Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary or Goodman Games' Book of Templates. Beautiful stuff, that you can't go wrong with. For the record, I'd be really, really interested in seeing those Elemental Spells from Atlas Games' Occult Lore redone for Pathfinder. I got that book as part of a lot on Ebay, and used the heck out of it. As for the topic itself? I use the heck out of 3PP stuff. A Fistful of Denarii's classes are regularly picked at my table, and everyone in my group has a copy of it because I BOUGHT it for them. :) I can't imagine making an arcane caster without using the 4WFG Arcane magic book. Obsidian Twilight converted my favorite Monte Cook feats into PF, and added some interesting concepts as well. (Our Feral Halfling Druid used the racial traits from this book), not to mention the Undefeated book from that line, which every character at my table has at least one feat from. The Super Genius Games Adventure Guide has some magnificent base classes that make the archetypes they represent way better than core does, and Rite Publishing's 101 series is used constantly by my guys. (I almost wept when I got to the ad mentioning the 1001 Spells collection isn't out until Fall in the back of the In The Company of Monsters compilation. Then I reread the Wyrd rebuild for Pathfinder and just couldn't be depressed with that to look forward to!) I couldn't imagine running Kingmaker without Jon Brazer's stuff... it's that integrated. Tricky Owlbear Games's Forgotten Foes is a bestiary that no fan of the classic game should do without. Headless Hydra's Eldritch Secrets and new Campaign book are spectacular explorations of the outer edges of magic. (Disclaimer: I contributed to Eldritch Secrets. If you find something you think is broken and stupid in there, it's probably me, and shouldn't reflect badly on the rest of the fine product.) And Frog God Games might as well be Paizo for how integrated it is into the Adventure Paths... and the astoundingly high quality of the stuff. Kobold Quarterly is one of the few magazines I subscribe to, and Open Design never fails to knock it out of the park. And for every product I named, there's 5 others I know I've overlooked or forgotten where came from. I guess what my rant comes down to is this: you're missing out on some of the best stuff Pathfinder has to offer if you need the Golem logo on a product to use it. Give it a shot, and don't let bad experiences with fly by night publishers in the free for all days poison you to some excellent ones with these fine folks. Personally, I'd twist the knife at the end. Let your team get their soul, beat the bearded devil, and get to the gate home... and then let the boss show up, beat them mercilessly... and let them go. Because it serves Hell's interests for mortals to think that even the weakest of them can defy hell and live, which he explains calmly as he's whaling on them, and since they couldn't legally keep the soul ANYWAY, they might as well get something from the deal. The players "win" AND will be looking for some payback that might lead them down a darker path back. Just what makes the devils smile. A Fistful of Denarii from Tripod Machine is SPECTACULAR and affordable to boot. I've lost the ability to play without it. Otherwise, I'm a big booster of 4 Winds Fantasy Games, Open Design, Frog God Games, Rite Publishing, Super Genius Games, Tricky Owlbear, and Headless Hydra Games as well. Anything by any of these companies is a good purchase. Steal liberally from the Joker's playbook. Sure, your PC finds him, about the time he's finished poisoning the heck out of the city reservoir with something that it'll take the PCs to fix. Or have the PC find him, only to get attacked by ANOTHER group, looking for a new member in said Demoniac. Lastly, let the PC go on his search... finding the villains layer, only for him to not be home, with a nasty guardian waiting. The villain's busy at the PCs place, waiting for them to come home, tired, resources expended... and then let the wild rumpus start! Iron Man is CERTAINLY whatever Summoner variant lets you wear the Eidolon... thematically, at least. Of course, a Tome of Secrets Artificer is equally appropriate. Thor's Warrior Madness means he should have at least a Barbarian level. Strangely, Dr. Druid's powers are almost entirely psionic rather than remotely druidlike... or perhaps an Oracle? Hercules is a great example of a Barbarian brawler. Chris Ballard wrote: I'm wondering if there's any copies out there, besides mine, that had issues with faintly printed pages. They aren't so faint I can't read the pages but there is quite a difference in those pages and other pages. Precisely ONE page of mine had this problem, so I know what you are talking about, at least. Gailbraithe wrote:
For the record, both Sasquatch (with variant Skunk Ape!) and the Jackalope are statted up nicely in 4WFG's Tome of Monsters in a way that you'd appreciate. :) I was shocked to discover there is a rabbit disease that effectively causes them to grow antlers in the real world, by the way... For the OFFICIAL version, I want to see Bigfoot be playable... John Kretzer wrote:
You may have. A guy named Bob Hieronymus claims that he was the Bigfoot in the Patterson film, and has the unusual physiology to make the argument somewhat plausible, and he was a known associate of Patterson and Gimlin. That said, Gimlin loudly denies that this is the case, Hieronymus STILL doesn't quite match the creature on that tape, recent enhancements of the footage show some pretty astounding biological details of the creature that would be really, REALLY hard to fake, and no costume even approaching the quality of the one that Hieronymus says he used exists today, much less way back when. So it's really up in the air, and will be until such time as somebody either finds that costume, or we find conclusive proof that there is such a creature as Bigfoot. (I'll note that the rumor that the designer of the Planet of the Apes costumes admitted to designing this one is patently false... he's been interviewed a few years ago and said he had nothing to do with it.) As for the Surgeon's photo of the Loch Ness Monster, yeah, that's pretty well debunked at this point. But those underwater photos are WAY better evidence for it, and nobody's ever really done much to debunk them to my knowledge... I'd give it to them. Of course, if the Bag's destroyed, they get dumped into the Etheral, where Acereak has demons on retainer, who will promptly rip them to shreds. :) Fun part is note the way the Tomb is constructed and Acereak's nature is... the demilich is totally inert if they don't get in there by use of the key and there's no way at all to exit the treasure chamber without having previously opened it with the key. The PC will starve to death unless his fellows rescue him by going through the tomb the regular way. :) Steven Purcell wrote:
+1 here for all of it... especially since James Jacobs has been so kind as to actually post really good PC lizardfolk online here before. I would kind of like a giant, a plant-type, and a living construct as well though... Kthulhu wrote:
Yes! While Adamant's Artificer and 0one's Urbanist both do this archetype fairly well, they do it from more of a spellcaster variant standpoint, which, while workable, leaves room for other interpretations... especially in the post-Summoner and Alchemist world. Another thing that has occured to me: some classic Indian classes, like the Yogi or the Fakir could be super fun. Basically, Monks that don't have the unarmed attack, but some other fun supernatural goodness. To my knowledge, that's a well that no other party has visited for Pathfinder, and precious few visited even in 3rd Edition. Another concept I'd like? Raider... a rogue/barbarian mashup, sort of like the Corsair, but with rages and rage powers replacing some of the sneak attack stuff. I'm WAYYYY too excited for this product... I can't wait! RJGrady wrote: I appreciate your confidence. In keeping with what I've done before, I like the idea of being able to build a mostly nonspellcasting Assassin who is not simply a rogue. But I do have some sympathy for the idea of an assassin as the antithesis of the paladin in style. Increasingly over-the-top coup-de-grace abilities don't really cut it for me... I agree wholeheartedly here. Emphasis on stealth and style should be major for an assassin. Ideally, you should want a class that could be specialized as a deadly ninja, master sniper, cunning poisoner, master of booby-trapped items, or commando raider. So, yeah, there's a challenge, but, after Fistful of Denarii, I have faith in your ability to make it work. Quote:
It's a far cry from Pathfinder compatible, and could definitely benefit from the updating to add that Tripod twist to it. I really hope you choose to revise it. (For the record, the original is in the Power Classes line.) I'm INSANELY excited about this project, and can't wait to see your take on the Assassin... if anyone can knock Wolfgang Baur's version from its spot on my campaign world, it's you! I'd like to see your take on some spellcasters, truthfully, and possibly a take on the Mongoose Games 3.5 Mercenary class. (A fighting man whose tactics were open-ended enough to mesh with anyone he was hired to work with. They did it by offering open feats slots that could be swapped out when working with or against opponents with different feats... I think you can do wonders with that!) hunter1828 wrote:
Thanks! Now all I have to do is figure out why I haven't got the .pdf for Tome of Monsters attached to my account yet... I LOVE 3rd party support... and have since the beginning. I'm all for using them in every possible context. I haven't made a PC YET without the use of 4 Winds Fantasy Games' Book of Arcane Magic, for instance. Stuff like the Book of Monster Templates and Forgotten Foes really add valuable options to the game, and Tripod Machine's Fistful of Denarii is a standard resource for all my NPC creation needs and half of the players at my table lift from it as well. So count me as a big booster... 3rd party publishers are a lot more likely to hit the esoteric and specialty areas that I'm excited by the most than even Paizo itself is, and the quality of most of what I have is on the same scale as they are.
