Mr. Walsh, I second, (and third, and fourth,) your return to Dungeon. Hopefully, you shall see fit to grace these pages once again. While I never ran Old Man Katan... I laughed the whole way through. Absolutely hysterical... just the thought of these singing mushrooms makes me smile, even to this day. (For that matter, there's a picture of a talking mushroom in the latest issue of Dungeon, and what did I think of? Old Man Katan!) You are an excellent author and dungeon writer. Your return would be greatly appreciated. (Not to mention a big selling point for the magazine!) Squid Uh... maybe the writers needed an excuse so the party could get to the second level? In all seriousness, my players didn't even care that they had disintegrated a hole down to the 2nd level... nor did they care why they did it. So, don't make a big deal about it, and I bet your players won't either. Squid Mail, that is... Erik, you said you were looking for posts from the message boards to put in the Prison Mail column. You even mentioned a couple by name. *Cough*ASEO*Cough* So, who do we have to slay/raise to get in the column? Sarcasm aside, could you give us some idea of what you want to see in a post here, especially ones intended to be published in Prison Mail? And do we need to list where we live if we want that mentioned in the column? Squid I'd like to add in a dissenting point here. As a general rule, the player is allowed to pick two flaws; in exchange, they are allowed to pick two new feats. By allowing this choice, you are effectively allowing a player to pick feats well before they are the appropriate level. It allows for a significant jump in power for PCs, and can be unbalancing, both in a PC vs. PC comparison or a Party Vs. Encounter. Squid I really didn't enhance him... I think I gave him max hit points, and that was about it. His capability to turn invisible at will turned the fight into a long one... he would float silently by the party, keeping his central eye shut, into a room with an open door, then attack the party with his eyestalks and use the appropriate eye ray to shut the door. The next round, he would turn invisible and then reopen the door. Wash, rinse, and repeat. The battle ended when the party managed to come up with an antimagic field of their own, and then the half ogre monk grappled Vhalantru. The half ogre monk then jumped down one of the shafts, and used Vhalantru as a whoopie cushion. Squid Um... you NEVER award xp off of an encounter's EL. You award xp off of a monster's CR. EL is only used to give the GM a rough idea of the difficulty of an encounter, NOT as a measure of how much xp the party should get. You calculate xp as follows... Keep track of the CRs that the party overcomes. Cross reference those CRs on the xp chart with a given party member's level. Total up the xp, then divide that total by the number of party members involved. Award this new amount of xp to the party member. Squid Please note that the invasion is happening because Alex Tercival is challenging the sherrif of Cauldron for his position as Sherrif. It's stated in the module that is Alex withdraws his challenge, then the invasion won't happen. Well, being dead is a very good reason for a challenge to be withdrawn, wouldn't you think? Before leaving for Occipitus, my party sent a message to Jenya, (not to mention Alex's body,) that the challenge had been withdrawn. Personally, keep in mind that there's a possible invasion. Have something in mind in case the party does nothing to stop it, but be willing to go along with any reasonable attempt by the party to halt the hostilities before they occur. Squid Hmmm.... Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure? :D Wait, you did that one... Ravenloft
That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure I'll think of more that deserve an update. While I'm at it... if you do decide to update an older module, could you please include a new art book, if the old module had one? Maybe as a web enhancement or some sort of insert? Please? These really help players visualize their surroundings. Squid Depends on where you are in the path. If you haven't hit Zenith Trajectory yet, then picking up some Kuo-Toa, about 8, would be a good idea. A bunch of half-orc fighters would also be a good investment. Hmmm... I don't know what you would use for the demodands. The large and huge Red Dragon would also be of use later on in the campaign. So, where are you in the path? Squid In my game, "Fish" from 13 Cages bargained for his life with the party. He told them that Shatterhorn was the backup base for the Cagewrights. So, in effect, I didn't have to use Jenya's divinations to steer the party in the right direction. Also remember that the old saying "Dead men tell no tales" does not hold true in a traditional D&D game. "Speak With Dead" is a fairly common spell, and if the party doesn't think of it, Jenya, or even a cleric of Wee Jas certainly will. Squid I have a couple of questions that regard the Entangle spell. Due to the way Entangle operates, would the spell provide cover and/or concealment from ranged attacks to anyone caught inside it? Does it operate in places where there is no plant life? (Does it create the plant life, or does it just animate nearby life?) Squid Well, here's something you probably didn't think about. Arcane Eye... the spell that creates a tiny eye that the mage can see through and control? There's pratically no doors in Shatterhorn at all, so if a party member decides to use this spell, they can map out almost all of the dungeon without the Cagewrights ever knowing. The encounter on top of Shatterhorn... the orcs on flying mounts and the dire wolves are going to die very, very quickly. The only thing up there that is remotely near the party's EL is the giant... and if he's not careful, he's a goner as well. Don't forget the fog that lingers around the ruins. That's a 20% miss chance for everyone involved. Squid Hmmm... give me a minute to think. Life's Bazaar = 1 death at the final battle
I'm sure I've left out several deaths here and there. There is one PC who has the power to come back from the dead, pretty much at will, who has died several times over. I'm pretty sure some of her deaths are missing from my list. Squid Well, if not Sacrem, what about Alek Tercival? Eventually Jenya gets high enough in level to cast resurrection or true resurrection... shouldn't she at least try and resurrect her good friend? And, for that matter, who exactly was that voice that spoke to the PCs at the end of Demonskar Legacy? My group has completely forgotten about that voice, but I would like to know, out of curiousity if nothing else. Squid I would love to see conversions to 3.5 of classic Dungeon modules... say, for example, Mud Sorceror's Tomb. I think they should only convert 1st or 2nd edition modules. 3rd edition require very little effort to convert to 3.5, since they are so similar and based on the same ruleset. For that matter, sequels to these classic modules would be welcome as well. Squid Consider the following situation. A party member is suddenly teleported, without warning and submerged, into a pool of liquid that they can't get out of easily. Do they: 1) Immediately hold their breath, and we start using the Con Countdown rules for drowning? 2) Start drowning because they couldn't take a breath... (the 'attack' was by surprise) and so are automatically sent to 1 hp? 3) Get some sort of save to catch their breath before they teleport? This has come up several times in my campaigns, and I need a definitive answer here... basically, for any time a character is not expecting to drown and is suddenly put in a situation where they will without holding their breath. Please help! Squid Hey, Diaglo... fellow Atlantan here. I usually get my issues from either War Room on Indian Trail or Batty's Best Comic and Games on Chamblee Tucker. Occasionally I hit Sword of the Phoenix off of Peachtree at Brookhaven MARTA station. Usually these stores put the issues on the shelves as soon as they arrive. I don't subscribe to the magazines so I can support my local gaming stores... but I've considered subscribing, if for no other reason than convenience. (Oh, and if you've attended DragonCon this year, I was one of the people running Are You A Werewolf?) Squid Well... my group turned into real estate agents, and now own Jzadirune, the Malachite Fortress, part of the Lucky Monkey, (the Striders own the other half,) the Kopru ruins... see a trend here? Basically, they've laid claim to every dungeon they've cleared out, except for the Kuo-Toa temple in "Zenith Trajectory". (They levelled that one.) Heck, they're threatening to cut Occipitus loose from the Abyss! One of the main characters' last name is Bytch, so the adventure company, and the real estate company, are named "The Bytch Slap Real Estate Company." Fortunately for me, the tremors released by collaring the Tree caused most of their claimed dungeons to be either flooded with lava or buried in rubble. So, they set up shop at Vaprak's Voice and are now trying to clear out Shatterhorn. They don't adventure to get cool loot... they adventure to claim land! Squid Hmmm.... how do I put this? Yes, I grouped everyone together. Yes, there were 8 PCs. Yes, one of them died. It was... insane. The conjurer and loremaster escaped. The quasit got pincushioned to the Tree by the party's archer. Unfortunately I don't have time to really talk about it right now. I'll post later tonight about it in it's own topic. Oh, and while I'm at it... one of my party members is casting, pretty much every fight, a Ball Lightning spell, (using action points,) that is Energy Admixtured, Maximized, Empowered, and Energy Subsituted... for a grand total of 270 points of wandering Acid and Sonic damage. Anyone got a fix for this monstrosity? Squid I just finished running the climatic battle in "Thirteen Cages" and I can truthfully say... there's a reason why the NPCs aren't bunching up in a room. Try running the final fight with 8 PCs, the cleric of Nerull, the Conjurer, the Loremaster, Dyr'ryd, Coalfire, the glabezru, and everything they can summon. Try it, I dare ya! Let's just say it's madness. Squid Exactly when does someone get a Reflex save? And, for that matter, when is someone denied one? Do you have to have some sort of cover? If you don't have cover, do you get one? This question keeps coming up in my campaign, and I just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts or official rulings on this. Squid Well, my party has chipped in their impressions of the 1st A.P. and have given me their thoughts on what they want for the next one. More Puzzles... from the impression I got, one a module would be nice. More Dragons... not just evil ones, but good ones as well. Maybe even the good ones are at cross purposes with the party and become adversaries. More Handouts... more things to give my players while they're playing. Everything from location maps to notes made by the bad guys. More of a focus on traditional monsters... basically, try and focus on monsters found in the Monster Manual. Monsters from the other three MMs, (MM II & III, and Fiend Folio) are fine, but they should not be the main villians, but more like the sidekicks or unusual monsters. Very little plane hopping. While "Test of the Smoking Eye" was a good module, and "Asylum" makes sense for the finale, try to keep hopping planes to a minimum. And if we're plane hopping, how about to a less typical plane, such as the Plane of Shadow or one of the Elemental Plane? Squid I want to see web enhancements for all of the 2nd Adventure Path. I know it's probably not possible, but they did help out, sometimes greatly. Would it be possible to, at least, get a player handout package as a web enhancement for the 1st module in the new Path? Call it something like what's been posted in another thread in this forum. Include maps for the starting location, a list of notable NPCs, shops, etc. Could this be done? Squid2 I'm glad most people seem to have enjoyed the Shackled City. I suspect you're really going to like what we have in store for 2005. --Erik Mona
Um.... if it's 20 modules long... that's more like 2005 and most of 2006! I've got no problems with that, especially since that would be a module a month. However, I do have some requests, so please bear with me. First of all, let me start by saying that I love the series, and have recommended it to other GMs. But there have been several things wrong with it, mainly with inaccurate stat blocks. I've had several instances where the weapons NPCs were said to be using did not match what their stat block said they used. (Greataxes for Greatswords, for example.) Grappling modifiers have been added incorrectly for a few NPCs. (Believe me, I know. I have a half ogre monk grappler with the Vow of Poverty feat in my party, so I've had to use those grapple checks a lot!) Hookface was described early on as being female, but when the party meets her, she's male. My biggest gripe, and for that matter, my party's, is the sudden plot shift inbetween "Demonskar Legacy" and "Test of the Smoking Eye". My party thought that this sudden shift in the direction of the plot, (from trying to keep Redgorge from being invaded to being told to plane hop by an unknown voice, without any chance to head back to Cauldron to stop the invasion,) was horrible and without explanation. The only reason that they were willing to plane hop was the fact that I didn't have anything prepped other than this module. (I had picked up that issue the night before the game.) So, please, please, please, better plots, tighter plots, and no inexplicable plot shifts. I know it sounds like myself and my group think the series sucks, but that's far from the truth. We love the series, and we can't wait to see how it ends. (As a matter of fact, they want the series to go Epic... they're planning on hunting down Hookface's lair and raiding it.) I am curious about one thing. I believe you have said that there are currently no playtesters for Dungeon. Is it possible to request to playtest the new Adventure Path, or any other modules? Squid Personally, my group pretty much nuked the Legion of Doom room in "Lords of Oblivion." IMC, Skaven has been a thorn in the sides of the party since he was introducted. Well, he was attending the meeting when the party wandered in, not disguised, but pretending to be a late arriving group showing up for the meeting. Well, Skaven went ballistic, combat started, the party's wizard won initiative, and proceeded to Sudden Quicken/Sudden Empower/Fireball and then Empowered Fireball. Most of the room failed their saves and turned into ash. It was ugly. While we're talking about LOD, anyone else notice that there was absolutely no room for a meeting in that room, much less a combat? My figures were lining the walls, and counting the two Large creatures, there was barely room for someone to stand in there, much less fight. Squid
