Ok can someone please explain to me how not to kill a party of 5th level adventurers with the Aboleth & skum encounter on the bridge to the underdark city of Pedestal?!
Using the encounter as written in the module, I sustained the first TPK in my career as a GM. I've always found a way to give the party a chance to withdraw or avoid a completely fatal encounter, but there was simply no chance for them. Even had their dice rolls no been abysmal, I don't see how the standard party of 4 5th level PC survives that encounter as written.
