Sadly china is where it's at. Unless Paizo finds some place cheaper to get it printed, it's not going to move. Gloss isn't going to go away to make the book cheaper for the above mentality. Granted, Paizo isn't Wizards, but the same reason is there. Shiny is better in the eye of the consumer, even if it's not necessary. It's not going to be printed in the USA, ever, because wages are hugely different, we're talking $5-$10 an hour different. Aaron Whitley wrote: That would be like having a thread that doesn't mention D&D 4.0 or Nazis. But then we have to talk about Microsoft too and if we go there, a linux fanboy will pop up followed closely by a mac user who was converted by using an iPod. Before you know it, we'll have a xbox 360 vs Ps3 vs Wii showcase over what's better Halo or Kill Zone which will be interrupted by someone that doesn't like shooters, so they'll bring up Final Fantasy with it's big hair and bigger sword.. btw the way, speaking of big, ever wonder which would win in a fight, a Star Destroyer from Star Wars or the Enterprise from Star Trek the Next Generation and everyone knows that when it comes down to it, Lara Croft's boobs are still bigger then Seoni's on the cover of Pathfinder 2, which leaves us back on topic.. kinda. :) Aaron Whitley wrote: Reading digital content on the toilet is about the only thing a blackberry is good for. It gets a little hard to read pdfs though... I've tried reading ebooks on my PALM, it's just not fun. I can't even begin to imagine reading a magazine with graphics and such on the pages on it. Just about the only thing I find digital good for is when I need 1 or 2 pages out of something, quick print and don't need to carry the whole book with me. flynnster wrote:
Ahh yes, the ever popular fall back position of trolls and toads. When one is cornered and puts his foot in his mouth, attempt to mock and/or belittle the opposition instead of gracefully bowing out having learned a lesson. By the way, that whole "dedicated Paizo customer" next to their name, it kind of makes you stick out like a sore thumb for what you really are. flynnster wrote: And, I've got news for you bud...all it takes is the loss of one sheep that starts making alot of noise...new century my ass. Apparently you don't know much about economics and commerce. Try thinking about your retort rather than resorting to pure pablum. Lol.. right. I think you need to take a lesson in economics and commerce. "The customer isn't always right" is straight out of the mouth of Brad Anderson, CEO of Best Buy. When Mr. Anderson made that announcement at a stockholders meeting of best buy, guess what happened? The next day, stock prices fell. You know what happened the day after that, stock price not only recovered but doubled what the fall was. I think you need to take your own advice "bud" find somewhere else to troll. It's called off topic posting and many moderators consider it spam and sometimes delete and/or ban people doing it. flynnster wrote: Second, you really may not want to come across quite so flippantly to a *paying customer* with a genuine concern. Don't agree? Fine. But remember, you are a direct representative of a company that I am a PATRON of. Or doesn't that mean anything anymore? It's a new century. The customer isn't always right. This is a private forum, owned by Paizo. They can say and do whatever they want. I've argued against glossy full color books for as long as 3rd edition's been in print. I've talked to Bill Slavicsek at great length about this. The decision was made because full color glossy is shiny. Shiny draws attention to the product. Black & White on cheap paper with a durable but not hard cover, doesn't draw as much attention. Wizards cares about new gamers, not us all crusty ones. I bet most people back when 3.0 came out bought Creature Collection 1 from White Wolf. I did. Maybe even the magic book right? I did too. How many people got volumes 2 and 3 (or the revised CC1)? Not nearly as many. Another simple but honest fact is, we as gamers have proven willing to pay extra and even more then AD&D players paid for their products. With that said, they're more then happy to continue to making it this way. You know those questionnaire cards that come with all Wizards D&D/D20 products? You'd be surprised what a small percentage of people put price as an important factor. Go in to Photoshop or Gimp, create a new file, and PASTE. Insta-map. :) Well they wanted to focus on the big bad and end game more then anything IMHO. Fact is, when 3.0 hit, everyone with a printer start churning out Races books for the low level monsters and Wizards was more then happy to let them while they focused on the stuff they knew we'd need for high levels. But Wizards never really pushed the RP and if Star Wars Saga Edition is any indication (with the removal of Profession and Perform/Entertain skill.. hey there are dancers and musicians in Star Wars!) RP is probably the last thing on their mind.. especially since you don't need RP to move figurines around a grid... and that's really what makes them money, the figurines. I still have my Slayer's Guides from Mongoose.. I should take another look at them. Anyway, I can't wait to see what else Paizo does with the little critters. James Jacobs wrote: We just didn't have room to list several of the other domains in the Player's Guide, alas, but since all those domains are relatively easy to find (and free, of course, if you have access to the SRD) I felt it was a better choice to include them and broaden the deities a bit. And for those without the SRD, here's one of the best resources for SRD info... I use it A LOT when I see something I don't recognize, usually saves me a lot of searching. When that fails there's... http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20 Which indexes all of Wizard's books so if it's not SRD, you can find where it was published by Wizards. :) TheCarrionCrawler wrote: Goblins are definately sick. Regardless, I get my eyes checked every year as anyone with glasses should. :P Just get one of these... I mean really, I wear glasses and I can still read the current font size WITHOUT them. Stop inconveniencing the rest of with your vanity and get some glasses, if you have them and still can't read it, get new ones. David Ignaszak wrote: I have a similar opinion. Don't get me wrong, Pathfinder looks cool, but Dungeon had 3 adventures an issue, Most of which where standalone. Standalone adventures are incredibly useful when DMs need a short sidearc, Just want to run a quick game but don't have the time to write their own adventure, or the like. That's what D&D Insider is for. I'm still hoping that Pathfinder will find a way to include the kinds of content we saw in Dragon, if not.. well won't be keeping Pathfinder long. So far I like what I see.. but space and expense are going to win out if there's nothing I can use as a player in here. Chet Skolos wrote: I expect I'll be the DM and I am planning on running Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path. I am having Pathfinder delivered directly to Perth. So my Question is which books should I bring with me? Most of the people here clearly didn't read what you planned on doing. Since you're going to be DMing, that eliminates A LOT.
You do NOT need any of the Complete books to DM. Sure they let you make interesting characters, but they're not necessary. Especially since you're running Pathfinder with NPCs there for you. They're not OGL products, so Pathfinder won't reference them. Spell Compendium.. it's nice for more spells.. but you're running Pathfinder and Spell Compendium isn't OGL.. so again.. don't need it as DM, none of the NPCs will be casting spells out of it. What you probably do want to bring a long is the Magic Item Compendium. Sure Pathfinder does have rewards built in, but if you run adventures between issues, it's nice to have some distinctive rewards. As DM, you don't need PHB2 either. DMG2 might be useful, but consider first how often you actually use it. Do you? If not, don't need it. If you plan on just running Pathfinder, you could probably just get away with the 3 corebooks and that's just it. Remember, one way or another, all of the Wizards books are available in PDF... ;) EATherrian wrote: Now I'm torn on whether to continue my own world or just allow you to do the hard work while I enjoy the fruits. Kudos to you gentlemen and ladies of Paizo, this is superlative work, and for the first time in a long time, I can barely wait to see each new tidbit as it comes out. Put the Pathfinder world into your own world, that's the fun of homebrew, you can borrow anything you want for your own campaign and as long as you rename it (in the case of MAJOR borrowing) no one would ever now they were doing something different. ;) I know it usually comes down to the artist... but why is Seoni depicted as having what looks like a katana on her back? I mean other characters have feats appropriate to their spin, and Seoni has debatable feats. Why wasn't the sword given a nod in proficiency.. or is it not a sword and just looks like a katana? It's in the Player's Guide for Pathfinder. Feat, basically +1 caster level to a school of magic (prereq spell focus, small school of magic for it) and the ability to cast a 0 level spell constitution bonus times per day based on school of magic. It's similar to the Red Wizard feat in Forgotten Realms... but better.
