History:

Siann's family's roots went deep into the past of the land where she grew up. Stewards of several fertile valleys, her ancestors
their influence and power until an usurpation of the throne led to a serious decline in her families fortunes. By the time she'd been
born, her family's possessions amounted to little more than a manor estate. Enterprising, her more recent ancestors had diversified,
taking on merchantile interests and ensuring the higher education of the family's scions.

Growing up, Siann was taught everything and anything, despite being a girl. All family members were expected to contribute, the days of
the idle nobility was in the distant past for this family. Showing much promise, Siann was chosen to assist her brother in his endeavours
in the manufacture of very popular folio of navigation maps. Drawing upon contemporary and older sources, he created what was regarded in many
circles, the most accurate maps of the Old World. A skilled draftsman, Siann was put to work making copies of the current edition for their
waiting customers. She was several weeks into this endeavour, when her uncle brought a strange man to stay at the family estate. The man,
with the strange name Shen Sui, was out of the Utter East, a land of fable and mystery.

Fascinated beyond measure, Siann began to take all and any opportunites to corner the Easterner and pester him with questions. Her father and other
family members encouraged her interest, knowledge of the world was their bread and butter.

At first Shen was merely polite to the young girl, until he noticed that her questions were quite insightful and were never repeated. In fact, it was
obvious that Siann took his answers and analyzed them, before returning , seeking further clarification.

One spring day, Siann found Shen in the garden, slowly moving about in a strange manner, occasionally striking out at the air with hand or foot. She waited
patiently until Shen was done, then asked what he had been doing.

That one simple question began Siann's journey into the mysteries of Shen's order. Never doubting the providence of finding a receptive student here in the West,
Shen slowly revealed the teachings of his master; the way of the Mind and Body.

Traditional roles were never enforced in her family, so her family hardly batted an eye to see Siann earnestly training with their inscrutable guest.

Over the next few years, Siann hardly noticed the growing unrest , both within her own country and its neighbors. Shadows of war were looming, as long simmering
grievences were coming to roost.

It all came to head one day with a column of dragoons riding by on the main road, a company splitting off to approach the manor. After a sharp salute to
her grandfather, the officer explained that all industries and production has been nationalized to support the war effort. Failure to comply would be dealt
with most harshly. With that the dragoons saluted again and rejoined the main column.

At this development, Shen announced that he'd return to his home in the Utter East. He comforted the distraught Siann, he'd taught her all she needed to know.
The rest would come to her as she grew, the words he'd said over the last few years would come to mean different things, enlightenment through experience.

The family prepared for the eventual visit by the War Department, knowing to appear any less that fully cooperative could invite disaster. All able bodied
males were drafted and placed into various branches of service. Siann and her brother kept making maps, only of a more strategic nature.

Such was their life for the first few years of the war, creating and copying maps in a much ,much more empty manor...until the war came much closer.

The campaign had been going badly recently, with several horrible debacles surrendering large tracts of territory to the enemy. Rising one morning, Siann and
her brother could see smoke rising from a town, no more than 10 miles distant. Having seen enought, Siann's grandfather pressed a pack into her hand and a purse
of money, as well as a letter. 'Travel to the coast' he said, 'Deliver this note to our factor there, he will see that you get tranport to the New World. This
land is a ruin, as is our family. Go, live!'. Despite her protestations, Siann's grandfather was adamant, and she relented, leaving the next day as another column
of smoke began to rise from another town, closer this time.

Travelling across the land, in the comfort of a carriage, Siann saw the deprivation the war had inflicted upon her countrymen. The deference her status afforded
her when she stopped often sickened her, seeing herself no better or worse than any other. There was a few times, when she contemplated defying her grandfather
and returning to the family estate. But , she always remember the steely look in his eyes, the love, the fear, the hope he had for her.

So , onward she travelled, finally reaching the coast. Such a sight, the harbor filled with warships. Finding the family's factor took some doing, but Siann
finally found the man. She watched calmly as the man read her grandfather's instructions with growing consternation. 'Impossible' the man said. After her
inquiry as to why, the man begain ranting and raving about blockades and privateers. Sitting very still, Siann watched as the man paced back and forth, muttering and
gesticulating wildly. Finally, he stopped and looked as Siann as if seeing her for the first time, his eyes taking in her very un-lady-like arms and frame.

'Take off the dress.' he ordered. Eyebrow raised, Siann paused then complied , stripping down to her under-clothes. Rubbing his chin, the factor studied Siann,
nodding, 'It might work.'. Striding over to a nearby cot, he pulled off the sheet and with a sharp knife, cut a long strip form it. 'Here...wrap your...uh...
lady bits.' he said, holding out the strip of cloth. Frowning, Siann nonetheless began to wrap her torso with the cloth.

Finished, she looked down at her now much more flat chest, the up to the factor's grinning face, 'It'll do.' he said, sitting at a small desk and furiously writing
out something on very official looking paper.

'Here, present this to the harbor master. He'll get you on the next messenger ship as a deckhand. It should get you to a friendly port in the New World..probably Neverwinter.
But you'll have to wrap like this, you won't be Siann, you'll be Simon. With this war going on, it's the only way. Don't worry, most people see what they expect
to see, but keep a knife handy just in case.'

After packing up her dress at the bottom of her pack and donning some of the Factor's older pantaloons and tunic, Siann undertook the difficult task of cutting back
a life-time's worth of tresses. The sleek black locks fell the the dirty floor in a black pool around her feet.

Nodding, the factor was satisfied, 'You'll be Simon, a boy of 13, common enough on the decks of Her Majesty's fleet. You'll have to be a quick study. Even on the
messenger boats, you contribute or you're fish food. Good luck, m'lady.' he says, handing her her pack, sketching a quick bow before leaving Siann to her own
thoughts.

And so it was that Siann, now Simon, boarded the HMMS Gilded Snake, it's newest deck hand. Quickly learning the ropes, so to speak, she brought no additional
scrutiny to herself, merely being one of the crew. It was a fast ship, magically aided in someway. The passage across the ocean took 2 and a half weeks. Siann
was glad that the passage was over quickly, before her own female nature served to betray her.

Once docked in Neverwinter, she had the next task; get off of the ship. Fortunately, the crew as quite abit more lax here in this friendly foreign port than
at home, and Siann found it easy to sneak off of the ship and disappear into the large city.

Next task, survival. Possessed of her grandfather's purse of funds, Siann was able to live for a time before necessarily finding means of supporting herself.

She travelled the city, still as Simon, finding the reception she got as Simon, the boy, quite different than she was used to as Siann. Back home with her
family it didn't matter, her gender, but outside her family and now here in the New World, women were treated differently.

So she kept up the ruse, and found in general people saw what the expected to see. She did get a few odd looks from other women, but that wasn't too frequent.

A constant refrain that Siann heard was talk of the frontier, settlers pushing back the wilderness, opportunity galore, adventure etc. She immediately thought
about using the cartographic tools her grandfather had secreted in her pack , perhaps the frontiers people would need maps made of their new homes.

Walking by a noticeboard, she saw an advertisement for individuals to assist in the escort of a wagon from a town called Winter Junction. In the back of her mind,
Siann heard Shen say 'Do not scoff at the coinicidental...the universe may be trying to tell you something'. Smiling wryly, Siann notes the town's location on
which railroad and made her way to the station to purchase a ticket.

Stepping off the train, the wind picked up the dust from the ground and blew it about. Hitching her pack up onto her shoulder, Siann...Simon began her search for
the man mentioned in the advertisement.
