Appearance

Shunsen is a monster of a man, towering at 6'5''. Muscular and lithe, he moves with purpose and confidence. Despite his simple accoutrements he projects
arrogance and a certain menace, aided by his scaly skin and large curved horns. A slight smile always pulls a the corner of his mouth, in contempt or mockery, perhaps both.

Personality

Shunsen learnt at his mother's knee that there were in the world, the meek and weak...and the bold and strong. She brought Shunsen up to be the latter.
The disciplines his mother ingrained in him prove to him everyday his superiority to most of those he meets. Those that surpass him, he treats with a very formal
respect, those that do not, a measured disdain, if not outright dismissal.

Background

Three decades ago, a craven, but charming Chelaxian named Pellus fled the Shackles, escaping certain death at hands of a band of pirates he'd cheated. Fleeing north,
he skirted Eastern Avistan, finally making the journey over the Crown of the World into the exotic lands of Tian.

Once there he managed to ingraciate himself into the service of a petty lord. Several years passed and it came to pass that the lord brought into his court a mystic, a woman who
took a liking to poor Pellus. A relationship began that resulted in the birth of one Shunsen. Now, though his redeeming qualities were few, Pellus was a good Chelaxian.

The woman, whose family has treated with Tian demons for generations , was not. The result of thier union bore the fruit of that long-time association.

A clever man, Pellus well hid his revulsion at the demonic taint that afflicted his son. Soon thereafter, he absconded in the dead of night, making his way back to Avistan.

The lord, wroth with the woman for making a trusted advisor leave his court, banished the mystic woman.

Shunsen was brought up in a remote village, the people there living in fear of his mother. Training in discipline and bitterness came early, Shunsen was grudgingly praises for his successes
and mercilessly punished for his mistakes. His fiendish heritage served him well, allowing him to excel and grow strong under his mother's unceasing 'education'.

Most common of all was his mother's rant's against his father, his birthplace, his heritage....everything about him, especially the subject he spoke of the most: a place called the Shackles.

He would go on and on about how free he was when he lived there, sailing the seas, taking what he wanted, the company of like-minded men and women, the booty...the adventure.

Even though his mother's recounting of these stories was colored by her abandonment, Shunsen gleaned the truth of it. This 'Shackles' was a place of opportunity, where the strong ruled , where one's abilities were tested, where one could find the wretch that sired you, then abandoned you to be raised by the harridan that was Shunsen's mother.

Standing over his mother's grave, Shunsen felt a sort of gratitude at what she'd taught him, but he was glad she was gone: he was now free to pursue his own destiny.

Gathering up his possessions he left the village without goodbye or even a glance at the timid villagers. Setting off north he re-traced the route of many an adventurous trader and made his way over the Crown of the World into Avistan.

Glad his mother had taught him what she knew of Pellus' mother tongue, Shensun communicated his wish to find the place called the Shackles. Most were puzzled by the request, not many actually 'wanted' to got there, but he found most people he asked accomodating , especially when he loomed over them threateningly.

So, slowly but steadily , Shunsen withstood the vagaries of his unfamiliarity with the customs of these strange lands and made his way South along the eastern edge of Avistan.

Finally, Shunsen stepped off of a poorly maintained ship onto the docks of Port Peril, looking about at the sea of miscreants and ne'er-do-wells, and smiled. He quickly gained a reputation as a fierce fighter. His strange appearance and weapons drawing the foolish to him like flies. One day he was approached by a number of men and women who suggested he give up his street fighting and put his skills to work on thier privateer. Shunsen readily agreed and enjoyed a successul voyage with that crew.

Stepping back on the docks, flush with success, Shunsen waves a farewell for now to the crew. He'd be back, and perhaps this time he'll put that Capt'n in his place this time.

Pausing, Shunsen contemplated his next move. The rumble in his stomach decided for him. Hitching his pack of loot over his shoulder, he strode confidently into the crowd, making his way towards the Formidably Maid...
