I need to reign it in a bit. The wording states the spell only works on "Fine" size category objects. Also, these objects must be unattended.

The door is not Fine by size category and thus the spell won't work.

Also, for future reference, worn clothing does not count as an unattended object.

I like the creative thinking on how to use spells but when it comes to using magic in general I tend to be very critical because spells can already do so much as it is.

Spark is simply a utility spell not a combat spell.

Again, I admire your creative thinking but I am not going to let it do that.
Mia, I did some research on the spell Spark. I need to reign it in a bit. The wording states the spell only works on "Fine" size category objects. Also, these objects must be unattended.

This is probably one of the most hostile lands I have ever concocted. Everything in the wilds is trying to kill you and most of them are far above your capacity to kill.

Use knowledges, perceptions, survivals, and stealth to their max!

I have increased the value of the above skills exceptionally and they will be required to aid in your survival in this campaign. Handle animal is another good trait to have as it will help immensely but it is one you can afford to do with out.

Do not forsake the others I have mentioned. Knowledge nature will always tell you the details of foes you are facing. Perception and Stealth will help you avoid encounters, and survival will also help to avoid encounters but more importantly, it can help you escape encounters that are too much to handle.

Climbing, swimming, acrobatics will all come up. It is best to insure you are not hampering those skills.

Base land speed is also a big one. Con is big too. All these are suggestions for surviving.

During recruitment, I really wasn't worried about your builds so nothing you have is set in stone. Make adjustments if you need to.

Few PBP rules

Combat -

Always a big one this thing called combat. On PBPs it goes incredibly slow. I can build maps and will do so as often as I can.

The important thing I need to tell you has to do with initiative. I lump bad guys and good guys all on the same initiative. This is the fastest way I can run combat.

I roll all initiatives and take the averages. Good guys and bad guys go on different initiatives but as groups.

The order in which players go depends on posting. Whoever posts their action first goes in that order of initiative. So when you decide your actions, see who has posted ahead of you. That is what has happened and post accordingly. The only thing you can do as far as initiative goes is to wait until you feel it is right to take your action.

Again, this is how I run combat in PBP and it really does well at not being held up. Also,

Also, I use my own dice for this game. I hate using this messageboard's dice system because it is a pain to type out. So I simply go with my own.

Saves -

I will roll simple saves where I deem necessary. Or any roll that may come off as a simple post of "I roll something" and that is it. So I will roll things like certain saves or simple perceptions and such. Again, this is to keep the game from slowing down too much.

Sandbox -

I believe I have mentioned before this game is a sandbox and will rely on a lot of player creativity to run. As such I will not physically force the party along if things become stagnant. The games progression is mostly in your hands.

Before I move the group on need someone to take lead and actively post when they are ready to move on. So long as one member of the party moves, I will move the game along.

In this game if a party doesn't move on from certain points due to lack of posting, I will send a monster to attack the party. As long as roleplay is taking place, I won't pick on the party too much as I do enjoy good roleplay.

If you need help as to ideas on places to go, things to do, I have some advice. I will have a lot of mini quests in this game. Every settlement you go to, every person you meet, even inanimate objects you find will have quests tagged to the, Doing these quests can unlocck more quests.

Also, if you feel stuck at any point, make knowledges checks appropriate for the situation. Survival checks are also a check you may make too. I will fill you in on what you can do, or what you need to do depending upon your results.

Those are my major points of running this game. I will start the gameplay thread one everyone selected has chimed in and presented their completed character sheets.

I thank you all for choosing Curse of the Old Ones and I look forward to a long and fun campaign.
Welcome to you lucky few who will be adventuring in the Janggamar. This information is a resource for you to use in game as you see fit.

First off we start with the Planet Known as Malakai.
It was discovered 34 A.B.Y. by the Jedi council. It was discovered when the Jedi were hunting a force fugitive out in the wild space just outside of Chiss space. The fugitive was found and slain by the people of the planet who called themselves the Malaki. The Jedi were troubled by the uncontrolled grasp of the force these people had. A temple was set up to help the Malaki learn to use their gifts.

When order 66 was issued the Jedi of Malakai cut all ties with the government. Only the Jedi council had knowledge of the world and they wanted to keep it away from the Sith.

The Jedi have had a tremendously successful impact on the Malaki and helping them prepare for the inevitable invasion of the empire. It was due to this training that the Malaki have survived this long. They are tough, resilient, persistent and powerful people with unparalleled melee capabilities and possess incredible adaptability while maintaining the traditions that gave birth to their society.

The Terminology derives from the Language of the Malaki.

The Word: Malakai Refers to their homeworld as the plane of challenge. This refers to their day to day struggle against the forces of nature. Malakai was categorized as a hostile world because of the overabundance of super predators. In fact most creatures of this world are more than a match for most military grade technology. The Malaki survive in this world without any form of technology. It has refined them into the powerhouse humans they are today. Only wookies and trandoshans could survive lengthy incursions into this worlds wilds.

The People:Malaki It basically refers to “The Challenged” The people of Malakai feel they are always challenged and tested while on this world and it is their fate to always face and overcome challenges until the end.

Death: Muit The end. It is more commonly known as completion or conclusion. A dead Malaki leaves behind his list of challenges as his legacy. Death is something the Malaki avoid at all cost but not at the expense of risk. The Malaki see the end as closure and your place in the rest lands is determined by ones accomplishments. The fewer one accomplishes, the lower their place in Muit. This causes Malaki to be courageous but not foolish. To the Malaki there is no such thing as a glorious death. To die means you lose any opportunity to rise above in the afterlife. Malaki take on any challenge no matter how great but in a manner that gives them optimal chance of survival. They never go into anything with with a thought of dying at all. It makes them VERY dangerous foes.

With those three points above we have an idea on the main guiding points of the Malaki culture. Lets dive into their society and social standings.

Malaki society is divided into four major divisions within a tribe. In order of prestige, starting with least prestigious we have:
Yirluk: The labor and artisan division – The lowest social division
Maluwan: These are the providers, hunters, and gatherers.
Kadukim: These are the soldiers and military – This division used to be the lowest before Malakai was invaded.
Haruka: Known as the Tradition Division, these are the diplomats, scholars, and historians. The Chieftain is included in this division.

The Haruka is the most important division. As much as the Malaki value physical prowess, they also wisdom and intelligence. The Malaki made an effort to learn galactic basic and learn to use their enemies resources. The Malaki are normally slow to violence and will take most opportunities to learn new things. They are still a primitive culture that still believes in the survival of the fittest.
Within each division there are several rankings.

These are the roles in Malaki society. This information is for you to use at your leisure for the rest of your stay on the planet. Even during your hunt. Taggard, archives, and the temple could have given you all this information before your hunt began so this should give you a good idea as to what to hunt for out there.
Terminology and Sociology of Malakai and its people. I need to adapt a special set of rules and requirements to allow my campaigns to proceed at a good and progressive rate.

Also it has been brought to my attention that my GMing style is a bit unorthodox. Especially in regards to the D20 system, which I must point out is not a favorite of mine. I have only been using the D20 for about a year even though I have been running games for more than 12. I will be putting forth a formal explanation of my GM style here as well.

First I want to start with new rules I have for game procedures.
Checks and Saves
From this point on I will be rolling the following myself for your characters based off of your given modifiers. I will be rolling your:
-Saving Throws
-Initiatives
-Other skill checks when applicable.
This will allow me to put more down in single posts rather than having to constantly wait on players to make checks. When a check is require, I will post your result so you can see what I rolled. I prefer my at home dice as opposed to Paizo’s oddly unbalanced dice roller. My dice tend to be friendlier at times. This should speed up progress a great deal.

If you feel a skill check is necessary for something, you must make it on your own as I will not prompt certain skill checks, this is most applicable to knowledge checks. I will no longer ask for knowledge checks, it is up to you to do so and I will keep an eye out for them and give you as much knowledge as your results merit.

Now for combat. One thing I have noticed as an issue with PBP is initiative order makes things a pain. From now on I am grouping badguys and you all on the same initiative. Here’s how it works:

I will roll all your initiatives using the modifiers you provide in your profiles. You will act together at the highest results
Example.
Joe rolls 6 total
Kim rolls 15 total
Bob rolls 9 total
Craig rolls 13 total
Badguys roll 14 total.

Initiative order:
Players at 15
Badguys at 14

Holding action will not permanently change your place in the order. I will allow held actions though.

Now the order of your actions depends on posting order.
Example:
Round 1
Joe posts his action first so he goes first in the lineup
Bob Posts second so he goes second and can act according to what Joe has already done
Kim posts next and acts according to what the two prior have done
Lastly Craig finally posts and he acts according to the other threes actions
Then I do the badguys and give you the results of your actions for the round.

Round 2
This time Kim posts first so she goes first.
Bob posts second and gets to act according to what Kim has done
Then Craig posts his action
This time Joe posts last and has to act as though everyone went before him
Then Badguys go.

This will minimize action confusion as you will have a better idea on whose doing what and how you can help the encounter. This will also save me a good deal of time as I wont have to keep shuffling your actions all over the place to fit each order of initiatives.

Basically, you either go before or after the baddies.

My GM Style Rules
A bit about my style as it obviously differs from traditional DMs. I have never liked the D20 system. I use it because I don’t have to explain it to anybody and I will modify the rules a nice amount to fit my style of gameplay.

Roleplay
I am a big fan of PC and NPC interactions. All my characters have a life story. I do not put forth random NPCs with no name or history. Even if they aren’t in my written campaign. Talking to a random NPC adds them to it, especially if you choose to pursue them with questions. I will also take roll play over dice rolls if the argument or action makes sense for the situation. Especially when it comes to diplomacy. Even if you fail a diplomacy check, a good IC argument or offer will work in place of the failed roll and still yield positive results.

Encoutners
People who know me know I love no holds barred encounters. I do not believe that people will always be able to fight everything they encounter. This is because I focus on a reality view. In my campaigns there may be encounters that are too hard for you to fight. I DO NOT EXPECT YOU TO FIGHT THEM. Most of the players I have had over the years learn to gauge a foe before engaging it. I ALWAYS leave a way out of any high power encounter. I will not throw you into a battle that is too hard for you without giving you a way out. Also, not every foe need be beat with dice rolls. Think, find tactical advantages. The rulebook leaves a lot of those concepts out and hope that my players can get creative in dealing with foes. Not every foe is meant to be put down at first encounter. I like the dramatic meet the badguy when you are too weak to take him on, or the encounter that you would be in more of a survival run as opposed to fight or die. This is why I write most of my own campaigns.

Character Creativity
I am a HUGE fan of open ended games where the trail isn’t always so obvious. I love exploring and trying to find the try on my own rather than have some compass guide pointing me at it. Every time I find a unique way to continue forward I feel a strong sense of accomplishment. That said, I run my games that way. I feed my players in game info for them to record and process. This information is there to give the players an idea as to what to do and where to go. Often times, I prefer not to completely railroad my players. No fun in it for me and as a player I enjoy options. Thus I help set a goal and leave a hundred paths to get there. It is up to the players to find the one that best suits them.

Game Progression
I hate pushing my players around. I leave them and their characters where they are until they choose to move unless being led by an NPC. It is your responsibility as a player to move the story along by telling me where you are going and what you are doing. I will give you your visible options and ask you, “Which way are you going to go?” “Where are you going to go?” “Are you heading out?” “Have you decided what to do?” I love player discussion when they all sit around and discuss what to do and think about their options. I do expect that when an option is selected, the players will take the initiative and head out. Preferably the apparent leader of the party would do this.

Alignments
I’ll be blunt. I don’t like alignments. I don’t like the fact that having an alignment has such an effect on the game especially when it is nothing more than a point of view. From this point on I am throwing alignments out the window. I do not want players to be motivated by this thing called an alignment, rather on their own personal beliefs and perceptions. I am altering alignment based rules like detect evil. It will now detect potentially dangerous or hostile individuals to you or someone else. This can have the result of making a good person look evil should they attack someone else first. Regardless, I just don’t like it motivating your characters. Good people aren’t expected to fight every evil person they find. Especially when that person does not mold to the description of good and evil. I also hate how it affects class choice. So it does not. Alignment is purely philosophical. Good and evil deities are now identified as angelic or demonic and they will still preach and behave according to their descriptions. They just wont be categorized as good or evil. That is how I want to run this.

This is the most prevalent and untraditional methods of my GM style. . This is the surviving traits of how I’ve run games for the past 12 years and may not easily change, though I may adjust them a bit to fit PBP.

Now I would like an evaluation.

First – How do you feel about my GMing style?

Second – How do you feel about the campaign you are in?

Third – How is my ability to communicate details?

Fourth – Is there any advice you can offer in regards to running online games?

Fifth - Is there any other comments or concerns, or advice?
Okay after near six months of doing PBPs on Paizo there are several things I have come to realize. I need to adapt a special set of rules and requirements to allow my campaigns to proceed at a good and progressive rate.
Also it has been brought to my attention that my GMing style is a bit unorthodox. Especially in regards to the D20 system, which I must point out is not a favorite of mine. I have only been using the D20 for about a year even though I have been running games for more than 12....Shanosuke2011-10-26T20:53:14ZForums: Recruitment: Star Wars RPG PBP. Recruitment for Zadora the Hutt CampaignShanosukehttps://paizo.com/campaigns/StarWarsTheConquestOfTheUnderworld/recruiting#12013-06-02T14:50:24Z2011-09-30T04:22:37Z
[Spoiler omitted]

This recruitment is for Zadora the Hutt. He is a neutral faction that believes in his own self interests. His goal is to conquer the criminal underground. You are here for the money and no other real reason. If you have another reason feel free to elaborate but for the most part, Zadora himself isn’t know to be a goody two shoes despite his aiding the alliance. He wont make you do anything too evil. Mostly you will be fighting other criminals and occasionally the empire. This is the only thread where you must supply all your own gear and weapons. You get the normal credit value your class normally provides.

You are allowed to put forth a character for each thread and I may pick more than one of them depending on how many recruits I get over all. Otherwise I pick my favorite of your two or three characters for the thread you made them for.

Recruitment ends in 2 weeks or when I get enough spots filled.

Requirements:
Sources We will be using The Star Wars Roleplaying Game Revised Core Rulebook by Bill Slavicsek, Andy Collins, and JD Wiker. If you don’t have it and want to play, it is an easy buy on amzon.com ranging from 15 to 40 Dollars or on Ebay.
AbilitiesWe will be using 25 Point buy following all the purchase rule from the Star Wars rulebook with the exception that instead of all abilities starting at a base 8, they start at 10.
Vitality I have decided to give players a max vitality equal to their hit dice max + con X 3. Players will not gain more vitality until level 4. This is to keep you from dying too soon as in this game……death can be quick due to the high damaging weapons.
Classes You can pick from all classes except for Jedi Classes. Jedi Adept is permissible but only with a good and reasonable back story. Thing is, Luke is technically the last “Jedi” but not the last force user.
Races All races are usable within Zadora’s faction with no limitations. In the imperial faction there are only humanoid, or basically human looking species like Cereans, or Chiss and so on. In the alliance there will be no primitive races. I added a few races and will post the details on either Sunday or Monday depending on my free time to type it from paper to PC. That’s a lot of work. The following new races are:
-Gran +2 Con +2 Cha -2 Dex
-Chiss +2 Cha +2 Int
-Miraluka – limit one per thread +2 Wis -2 Cha Start with Force Sensetive Feat and Sense Feat
- Mandelorian – limit one per thread +2 Str +4 Con -2 Cha Has fast heal
-Tusken – Fringer or scout class only +2 Str +2 Con -4 Cha Has +2 trait bonus to animal handle and Ride. Uses Graffii proficiency
-Weequay +2 Dex +2 Con -2 Int -2 Cha
-Nikto +2 Str +2 Con -2 Wis – 2 Cha
-Chadrafan +4 Dex +2 Cha -2 Str -2 Con Small
-Drell +2 Int +2 Wis no negatives
-Barbel +2 Str +4 Con -2 Dex -2 Cha -2 Int Has Nat Armor
These races are added and I will post more details later. The ability modifiers are just to give you an idea as to what they are capable of.

Now What I need you to put in your ap. I don’t want a statblock as things may need to change but this is what I do need. Also don’t make an Alias please. Not yet anyways
You need
Your backstory including
-Name, Age, and Race
-Homeworld,
-The Reason for your class
-Physical Description
-Skill Explanation – (Basically you explain where you got your skills from, this doesn’t need to be too precise)
- Motivations (What are you character’s goals and what motivates them to do stuff, anything)
-And finally why you are joining this faction.

Once all that is taken care of you just wait for me to look over your app. This campaign has a few critiques and if something you chose wont fit or don’t make sense I will ask you to correct it.

I am looking for 4 to 6 players a thread. I will close all recruitments in two weeks or once all positions are filled with desirable players. Whichever happens first. Best of luck to Y’all.

[Spoiler omitted]

If there is anything I missed or you have questions, post them and I will answer to the best of my knowledge.
[Spoiler omitted]

But I wont turn down my new friends requests for aid. In addition to money and jewels, there are also a nice sum of magic items to be had. A large amount of it used to belong to the civilization that used to be here many years about before Aradina was built. This city in not part of Daiga's original design. Also there are the years of explorer's goods that have been stored by my people. A lot of folks wonder into these ruins hoping to hit the big time over the millenia but we have been here a very very long time. There are few who have escaped death at the hands of my ancestors or my currrent tribe. So their things have piled up over the years also. Lots of treasure to be had for sure. Though unless you are as strong as a titan, I do not see you getting past the others to get it all. I know a few places we might be able to sneak into though. Still, it is very risky as my tribesmen tend to wander throughout the ruin. So I can't promise we wont be caught."
Samal seems to brighten up when you mention she can join. "Wonderful!
