Sorry about that; I'm finding myself very distracted a lot of the time (we're in a crunch phase that has been going on for good onto 4 months now). I generally catch-up on what is happening in the pbps once a week - and then I typically do not want to commit to posting when I don't feel confident about the ability to follow-up on the posts.

Consider Shakhan a relatively quiet shadow that ensures that things are looked after while others are occupied with things.

Shakhan stops mid-swing. "Unless Girrigz is your boss. In which case I don't mind starting with the henchmen and working my way up."

Shakhan keeps up his aggression, he goes for the next-nearest foe!

Attack, Power Attack 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 damage 1d8 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 4 = 14

Shakhan keeps up the pressure, gaining on the next closest foe he directs his axe with simple efficiency.

Attack, Power Attack 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 8 - 2 = 20 damage 1d8 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 4 = 10

Shakhan moves into a favorable position - flanking or blocking, whatever is easiest to reach - then attacks!

Attack, Power Attack 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 4 = 22 damage 1d8 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 4 = 7

Initiative 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Shakhan conveys Ashe's request, using as much gestures as words. It's a bit of luck that Varrel manages to figure out that Shakhan means sleep and not kill, as his miming is ambivalent on that point.

Shakhan takes up the rear position, shield and axe in hand.

He's also fast enough to get to the front quickly, if needed.

Shakhan lumbers himself a bit more into the foreground. His posture and stance suggesting that he'd very much back up the paladin if need be.

Intimidate, aid 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Shakhan barely nods, but his big shoulders crack a little has his muscles come to life. "hrm-"

I'm still paying attention, I just feel there's not much to contribute for Shakhan. Consider him an imposing shadow in the background until he says something :)

"Bah! Either they know already, or will know soon enough - I'm not afraid enough to hide. ...if the queen has a hand in this, then she'll be glad to have the help of the Red Mantis - as she'd be assured no duplicity from them."

"Never heard of him. I've seen my fair share of healers in my time. Never a doc Davaulus. heh. Davaulus. Devils. hah!"

Shakhan grudgingly nods to Varrel's words, "Magic is good and well as a means to heal, but with the number of people affected... there's not magic enough. If there is something that lessens the severity, or even cures or immunizes, and that is not magic. That would be good."

"I don't understand," Shakhan grumbles. "What can anybody gain from this? Would the queen rule over a dead city?"

Shakhan indicates that he's still keeping an eye on the not-yet-enemies on the outside. He will position himself close to the entrance that Ashe made.

Perhaps not evil, but certainly capricious. She's still a dangerous creature. At least it seems the paladin is trying to cast some form of sleep spell on her, Shakhan thinks to himself.

Shakhan swims closer towards Gronk to be able to help in case of trouble - but he still keeps a wary eye on the critter with the many teeth.

Shakhan doesn't verbally respond to the paladin, but he readies himself close to the exit that Ashe is examining. He twirls the trident in his hand, the sharp bits pointing toward the shark.

@Una: that was the case in 3.5 - in Pathfinder it is a standard action.

Shakhan follows Ashe, similarly defenses on the ready. His shield is held close to his body to minimize impediment to movement while the trident is steady in his other hand.

Total defense, follow Ashe

Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

"Don't be too hasty, they can come at any time. Besides, I had some meat for breakfast." Shakhan shows just enough teeth to indicate that this passes as humor in his eyes.

Shakhan shrugs. His battle-readiness only momentarily abated as the sharks decide to dine elsewhere. He beckons to the wreck.

Shakhan swims towards the rear portion of the ship, making himself comfortable in the half-weight environment above the wreck. His stance indicates he's essentially taking a guarding position.

Initiative 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Figuring this is as good a time as any, Shakhan sighs inwardly and takes out a potion of mage armor, then carefully unstoppers it and drinks it down.

:)

Hope you (and everybody) had a good start to the new year!

Shakhan nods appreciatively to Gronk, though his face isn't reflecting this gratitude. The quivering changes to his throat bother him subconsciously, though he ignores it as good he can. Muttering something foul he immerses himself into the waters - instinctively trying to hold his breath before he cautiously tries to "breathe" water.

My apologies - I was in Namibia (south-western Africa) and the internet was more unreliable than I was expecting so I didn't get a chance to tell all my pbp-threads. I'll be updating in the next 24 hours...

Shakhan leans back, outwardly there's a relaxed air about his pose; but it is a bit misleading - his body is biding its time without excessive energy wasted. His eyes are alert though, eying the water for turmoil or some other sign of trouble.

Shakhan nods to Una, "I'll stay on standby, if something happens down there."

Shakhan nods wordlessly to Una as he enters. Truth be told, he'd been at the door earlier already - but had decided to take a walk around the block first to limber up.

Shakhan, by dint of his unapproachable mien, is entirely unharassed as he makes his way along, within earshot ahead of Una. What an ugly disease.

Shakhan raises an eyebrow for a moment, then narrows both eyes as he tries to pierce any deceptions or stray give-aways that Orsini may venture. "For the past decade or so, Blackjack wasn't very prominent in Korvosa. What exactly did you do?"

What? We went shopping and rejoined the others. Shakhan knows where Endrin's is.

When they arrive at Endrin's place, Shakhan and Icabhod catch the tail end of the conversations. Shakhan rolls his eyes in a knowing way to Icabhod. "That's our paladin. Speeches. ...at least followed by action."

"Heh, yea. Let's go."

Shakhan doesn't mind the parlor tricks - they don't serve a function other than to entertain, and that is just fine by him. He gets himself and Icabhod a flagon of frothy mead then seats himself at a convenient table. His dark expression almost immediately clears any other occupant at the table, so he and Icabhod have it to themselves.

Shakhan pushes the drink to his table partner. "hrmph. 'spology. Don't like magic much," he declares, without expanding on that.

Shakhan grunts towards Icabhod: "Come with me if you want, I know a couple of places with good potions."

Sense Motive DC 1:

Bluff, hinting 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

Shakhan knows some reliable and discrete potion sellers, but primarily he's thinking of "potions" in the form of alcoholic beverages.

Shakhan purchases himself an elixir of swimming, and goes to see the quartermaster (with the Field Marshall's permission) to see if there's a trident for him to borrow - preferably a masterwork one.

Ashe: you could get an oil of greater magic weapon to temporarily give the weapon a +1 enhancement. The cheapest would be if Ashe could ask one of his clerical contacts to prepare the spell for tomorrow - as spell services it would cost 10 x 3 x 5 = 150gp and would last 5 hours.

Unless he's willing to go with short-duration and just use magic weapon (which he could cast himself with a 2 minute duration).

"A trident. I'll need one. A proper one." Shakhan, fortunately, is familiar with a wide variety of weapons from his heyday in the pits.

Some more thoughts:

Diving suit 10gp, page 88 - grants +1 circumstance bonus to swim checks

Elixir of swimming 250gp - grants +10 competence bonus to swim for 1 hour

Ashe can use weapon bond to enhance his standard weapon as "seaborne" (+1 equivalent) to wield it without penalty in water, and gain a bonus to swim checks.

Another useful item (also in general) would be a robe of blending 8400gp (among other abilities it allows to alter self for an hour - when chosing a humanoid with a swimspeed you get waterbreathing as a bonus).

In summary: Shakhan wants a masterwork trident, an elixer of swimming, and a share in whatever waterbreathing magics will be used.

Shakhan shrugs at Varrel's words. "The nature of the steel reveals itself in adversity." He nods to Icabhod, though his distrust of magic is evident.

Magic?! Shakhan fully withdraws his hand now, quite quickly. His face is a turn grimmer. "Not a real bodyguard," slips from his lips.

Shakhan eyes Icabhod. Then - for what passes as subtlety for him - puts a testing hand on the man's shoulder. When he withdraws it again, a second or two later, Shakhan grunts a little disparagingly, "What manner of bodyguard are you? One of those strange fellows, monks? Hyah! with the fists?"

Bbbbad! Bad to the booone!

Aw yea!

Shakhan doesn't go out of his way, but a few of the posters that he notices next to him as he walks by he simply tears down.

Introductions are the GM's responsibility, I don't think Megan will have any trouble.

That said; I vote for Gronk too then so he isn't auto-out.

I'll abstain my vote. I'd be very pleased with either of the two - as they both formed part of my initial votes.

Shakhan's pace has picked up. His brooding made him repress that his natural gait is too fast for most - and in the streets mostly everybody gets out of the way of the hulking man so little distracts him from his sombre mood. Still, after a minute he looks up and realizes he needed to put in a few seconds break.

"hrmph - not a one with meat," Shakhan mutters to himself.

Heya, I play the aforementioned savage barbarian. A bit of a dour type due to his past, from which he takes refuge in immediate pleasures that dull that pain; but things have improved for him - he's even been known to crack a thin smile at least once every 400 posts.

Although he's been described as a melee powerhouse; that isn't really accurate. He's a pretty decent frontliner - but his emphasis is on staying power rather than on big hits.

Unlike most, I'm not averse to lop-sided parties (meaning melee heavy, or all-casters, or what-have-you). Though in this instance, I doubt it will matter.

Heya, I didn't realize there was a big discussion in the OOC thread. For some reason neither my main thread new-post-count nor the feedreader seem to pay attention to this thread. Is strange.

Thankfully Varrel / STR Ranger PM'd me (though an ooc post in the main game thread would've worked too).

My votes in order of preference:
-Kayla Adrianas
-Gronk de'Morcaine
-Valtyra Dalskar

Unfortunately I did not notice a promising monk, which would've won my first choice :)
