Septimus turns his head to find Ameiko's face among the staring throng, the movement seeming to take an age. When he finally locates her, he drinks in her beauty, and stretches his right hand across the tabletop towards her, in a last, futile gesture. A puzzled frown crosses his face as his life ebbs away. So much left to do, he thinks to himself. It's not fair. Someone always ruins my plans. Curse them! Curse them all! If only I had another chance, I wouldn't let anyone stand in my way. Finally, his head drops to his chest, and the fingers on his outstretched hand relax. The rest is silence.

"I can't think of a more appropriate punishment, Ameiko," Septimus says, with a smile. "I'd love to try it." He looks around the bustling taproom, then turns back to Ameiko. "I expect you're going to be busy this evening, but is there any chance you might be able to join me? It would be a shame to dine alone, and I'd like to find out a little more about you and this place."

"There's no need for titles, Ameiko," Septimus replies. "Please call me Septimus. It will be my pleasure to visit you at the Rusty Dragon tonight. I'll even wear a clean tunic in honour of the occasion!" He smiles broadly, still looking full into Ameiko's eyes. "Until, tonight, then," he says, and bows more formally to the attractive woman, before turning and moving away through the marketplace.

"Gah!" Septimus exclaims. "Do you know how hard it is to get the stench of fish oil out of silk?" He looks the woman who crashed into him up and down, and a slight smile softens his angry expression. "Perhaps you can direct me to the services of a good cleaner? I am newly arrived in town, and have yet to find my way around." Septimus inclines his head in a small bow, then holds the woman's eyes with his own, waiting for a reply. |
