Okay this is really more simple then it needs to be you are running a cleric of deceit. A charmer and trickster. Think what would a trickster do. To start with have him meet them under the guise of an ally. A helpless victim of the cleric. Someone to lull them into a false sense of security. Have two of his rogue minions also do this. During the main encounter with the villain have a fake duplicate on the throne while the party is readying for battle roll secret checks for steal attempts on the Gunslinger. Even using another's bluff to try and get him distracted. Eagle's splendor is great for that sort of them and any item to boost charisma is important. After the signal is given have the cleric or his minion toss the gun to the side away from him. Perception is important here hiding the truth until the gunslinger reaches for his trusty weapons only to find them gone. Then since he's the main draw and the rest of the party has been figured out target him and only him at the battles beginning even go so far as to have him be "knocked out" instead of killed because the Cleric wants him to appreciate what happens next. After that it's a cake walk. Without the heavy run rough shod on the others tactics they'll be in such disarray that when the big reveal happens that the cleric was the one they "rescued" it will make them realize just how well prepared he was. you can even stretch this out. Your cleric doesn't have to do a thing. He could have his minion die in his stead tricking the party only to go with them and sabotage them from the inside out. Tricksters are the best villains cause they are all about deceit.

You could also plant an arrow magnet on him and watch his face as his bullets go out and then back into him
Tee hee

Kytons are essentially cenobites.

Possessed toys are always fun doll golems and the like. I suggest the 3.5 3rd party book of Denizens of Dread from the White Wolf Ravenloft series god ideas in the book the actual guides also give a great bit of info on running normal creature builds into misidentified or upgraded monsters. Also Glass Golem from Midevil?

Also Creepers from Minecraft if put as exploding zombie pigs (which is essentially what they are)

True Dopplegangers of the PCs.

Also simple templates can change many aspects of a character. Just

I would like to see some monsters inspired by some of my favorite video games. Obviously copyright would prevent naming them such as they are but Tyrants from RE. Pyramid heads from SH. Creepers from Minecraft. Come to mind. More crypto creatures would be nice too not too mention things like Slenderman, The Rake, Slit mouth women, Some more varied versions of monsters. A few of the kaiju like creatures from Shadow of the Colossus. More Kaiju obviously. Alien races that might blend well with the feel of the new Outer Dragons, Also would love to see some old monsters dug up from some of my favorite old d&d settings. Muls, Carrionettes, and others. I'm a mostly old school gamer so I love the old 2nd edition settings, Al Qadim, Ravenloft, and Dark Sun. I realize most monsters like these are copyright protected but a few are open to an original interpretation. And love to see more vampires, undead, and lycanthropes as always

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The Paladin is a awkward class at times and very story driven. It's always been one of my favorites because of this but more and more in this day and age the paladin seems to fall into the category of two camps. PLaying to become a Black Guard (Thankfully the Anti-Paladin Class fixed this in a lot of groups) or Playing the no nonsense stuff shirt. This has to do with the Paladin's Code. But that thankfully is why being a DM is so rewarding. We can suit the changes. We can decide what the deity or force that the Paladin follows sees as Evil.

For Example I am currently playing a female Paladin that disguises herself as her long dead brother in order to atone for causing his death and retaking her rightful place as ruler. Not wanting to be seen as the former evil noble she was in her youth she took his identity to hide from the revolutionaries and never really changed out of it. She acts like a Paladin should. Writing wrongs. Doing Good. Seeking to avenge the downtrodden in atonement for her past sins. But she also lies about who she is. Hiding the truth behind the ideal knight persona.

This act is not in her deities opinion evil. Her lie doesn't harm anyone nor does it cause her to violate the tenants of her beliefs. In fact it has aided in gathering support for her allies and the church. It adds a story element not normally seen. The evil soul trying to atone for her deeds by wearing the face of her (in her opinion) victim. She cared about her brother and honors his name never taking the credit for her own accomplishments.

Now according to the Paladin code the very act of lying is dishonorable and would automatically discount her from Paladinhood. But that's the thing a diety can decide that the ends justify the means. That her actions are not dishonorable but instead self sacrificing. It is a great example of how a deity decides who is a Paladin not a set code of game rules. It works for the story element because it is not a dishonorable act. Now if she lied to an enemy intent on inflicting harm that is evil. If she harmed and innocent through her actions or used poison or the like then yes, that is dishonorable. But that's the reasn why the DM decides these things. Because you can't decide morals from a book (Yes, even the bible).

Morals are what you as a person or being decide they are. Your gaming group is no different. Different Gods think of Honor differently. Honor to a God of Battle is not the same as one to a God of Death. Remember ask your DM what is your deities beliefs. Remember Lawful Good is also not lawful dumb. Just because you follow the rules and fight for good doesn't mean you can't be a BA. Paladins are even more so BA because of their beliefs. Write down the code and flesh it out. Just some helpful opinions and tips for quality role-playing.

And as always ... Play Responsibly.

I always played the random encounter table game. Yes, you can rest in the dungeon but that doesn't mean you won't be attacked. Take a hint from LotR there are times when you can catch your breath in the mines of moria just don't let the goblins know where you are or set up a defensive peremeter it's the same idea as setting up a command post in enemy territory. If your smart you can do it.

See "Restless Soul" from Rite Publishing for an interesting take on a revived soul without being undead.

Also, what really bothers me about half-elves is that they are not sterile. In nature if a horse and a donkey mate then the mule is sterile.

Why then if Humans and Elves are a seperate genus are they producing breedable off spring. I know you can argue the magical nature of elves but I think it makes it more tragic for the character if they could never produce generations and hence makes more sense that they'd be shunned in a communtiy centric environment like fantasy kingdoms.

Actually it also has to do with many factors of growing up for a half elf. They mature at a slower rate then most humans because of elven heritage. They live longer hence human friends die away and elven friends might not feel obliged to befriendsomeone who will die in a quarter of the time an elf will. This causes the half-elf to feel rejected by both societies. They cannot make childhood friends with one group because of the groups long childhood and the other has a much shorter maturity rate. Therefor they can only truly make friends at adventuring age so seeking a place to belong is more along the lines of what is acceptable socially.

Also Half-elven children take longer to develop in utero about a year according to most texts. So mother's might become more attached on human side to the offspring then Elven mothers who might view the pain of a human like birth an anethema compared to the relative ease of faye birth.

Can anyone tell me how this is a problem. Heck Raistlin Majere the greatest wizard character since Gandolf was evil and I mean completely irredeemably evil and yet he was not only loved by his party, he was also loved by the fans. Sometimes it's better to see a fresh outlook, in a character.

Lawful Evil is not ignoble. They are the Doctor Dooms, the Magnetos the ones that make sense in a twisted way. They are as much a reflection of what the heroes could be then anyone. You want pathos? You want true emotion in a game? I suggest putting a villainous character in the game.

And as for the whole Chaos vs. Lawful try reading some X-Men arguements between Wolverine and Cyclops. Or perhaps reading the arguements of Captain America and Iron Man. These themes often come into play.

We as gamers and role-players shouldn't consign ourselves to such rigid thinking. Not every hero works well. Even those of the same alignment can argue over methods or even over belief systems. Lawful Evil and Lawful Good can end up being best friends. Chaotic good and Lawful good can end up as bitter enemies.

Games such as Ravenloft and other D&D games blur alignment detection. I often alter this myself replacing this trait in Paladins with an "Evil Intent" Sense. It makes sense because an evil individual never believes their evil. Case in point the Nazi supporters in germany. Did all of them think that they were evil? That is the question. Morality, good and evil, law and order. These are philosophies and we just scan over them convert them into stats. A good DM makes them plot points. I hope you take these points to heart.

I will tell you simply this. It's the same thing i heard from my rpga certified DM in 3.5 D&D and these words a are simple. If you have a problem with any material then CHUCK IT OUT THE AIRLOCK AND SHUT THE DOOR BEHIND YOU! Is it really worth pointing out broken builds so other players can exploit them? We are all adults here (we ARE all ADULTS here, right?)

So if a class is felt to be broken then don't include the build as a choice. All of these are simple suggestions anyway.

So if you want to "fix" the "problem" get rid of the problem. I've seen the build myself. Multiclassing isn't my thing anyway. If a players worth his salt he won't exploit loopholes and if he isn't then I look at the sheet and erase it. Simple. Why worry about broken characters if you can see them by "Staring at the sheet" just say NO! You have the power DM's so quit whining.
