Background
Spoiler:
Satou spent her early childhood as an orphan in the great Dunarite city of Djata. Her striking, pale appearance revealed a parentage from faraway lands, and proved to be an object of bullying from the other street children. Satou would escape the taunting by fleeing and hiding in the large library used by the Djata Academy of Eldritch Arts. While she stole away to hide from orphan and librarian alike, Satou would read. She eventually managed to teach herself a few simple spells. At the ripe age of 9, she burned out another child's eye with conjured acid on the steps of the library, which made the wizards take notice. She was quickly placed in the Academy, her wizard mentors impressed by her ability at such a young age. Satou spent the next 15 years at the academy, and excelled in her education. She would spend many hours poring over tomes in the library, trying to find new spells, new knowledge. A little over a year ago, she stumbled upon a book that seemed out of place, a dusty tome entitled Gods and the Dead. A detailed primer on the undead, their creation, and their connection to divine energy, the book did not belong in the conservative Academy's library. Necromancy was forbidden, and the state-supported school did not want to appear to have any connection to the brutal land of Arengis. Satou nonetheless became fascinated with the power of negative energy and the intriguing nature of undead creatures. She studied the book intensely, and sought out other books on the topic. She soon began practicing necromancy in full, hoping to eventually create undead servants of her own. Her new focus caused her to shirk her responsibilities in other fields, and her Wizardly Advisor noticed how she had fallen behind in her studies of Enchantment and Illusion. The copy of Gods and the Dead was eventually discovered, and she was promptly expelled from the academy. Undeterred, Satou set out on her own, determined to master the arts of Necromancy, hoping to use undead servants to improve the land of Dunaris and enlighten its people on the utility of Necromancy. Her only companion was her familiar and confidant, a mischievous vampire bat by the name of Uli. Using her last gold, Satou set out for the town of Haven, following a tip that the bibliophile Duke Albert's private library may contain one or more forbidden texts. |
