Merineth DeVere, Countess Tylan, did not have a happy marriage, but then, she never expected to. She did her duty to her husband, nearly three times her age, and bore him both a son and a daughter in the five years their marriage lasted. When he died, however, Countess Tylan shocked her society by refusing to remarry, managing her late husband's holdings in his son's name and taking up with a number of surprisingly indiscreet lovers. She only gave one of them a son, however.

Sandros Highmount (a Common translation of his father's family name, Aistieth) was clearly an elf's byblow from the moment of his appearance, and both that and his slow (from a human's perspective) development marked him as strange from the outset. In order to keep up, Sandros learned to push himself, but his father's legacy of intellect and grace served him well. When he reached the age of 15, his father's mother sent word and asked that he be sent to them for schooling in elements of his elven heritage, and he passed six years among them, learning the blade and the bow. When he returned, he was a confident and handsome man of 22, with an exotic air that tended to make innkeeper's daughters and noble debutantes alike somewhat light-headed. After two years of cutting a swathe through the available beauties of Warwick (a habit that earned him several opportunities to prove the worth of his rapier training), things changed suddenly when his mother died and his half-brother Neras became Count Tylan at last. Neras, always a stolid man, had little patience for Sandros' antics, and politely but firmly told Sandros to find some kind of worthy employment. Sandros slipped out of the estate that night, and has not been home since.

Sandros stands surprisingly tall for a half-elf at 5'7", with grey eyes and hair so light a blond it is almost white. His habitual expression is one of self-satisfied amusement, breaking out into open laughter at frequent points. He tends to wear high-collared coats and fine boots, and he is never seen abroad without his carefully maintained rapier at his hip. He is 25 years old.
