Background:

From the diary of Sander Yarro, village healer of Phaendar:

20 Pharast, 4707 AR: The church has re-settled me in Nirmathas. Sister Perthune claims a fresh start will be good for my soul. But Goddess knows no earthly comfort can possibly soothe the loss of my dearest Clara...

1 Desnus, 4707 AR: I've chosen the village of Phaendar, a small settlement at the crossing of the River Marideth...In truth, I've found the people here to date to be insular, disagreeable, and disorganized. From such crooked timber they claim to be building a future -- we shall see...I often wonder if my sorrow clouds my judgement and I am not seeing truly. Regardless, the healing light of the Goddess is needed the world over, and in places such as this more than most. I hope to do my part...

27 Calistril, 4709 AR: With the help of young Gulen the stonemason's apprentice, I've finally completed a modest shrine. The villagers often ask questions about the Goddess when they come for treatment...I eagerly share her grace. She is not well known here, but they have all heard stories of flashing dervishes and shining temples. More often than not I catch glances at the scimitar resting above the mantle...

12 Gozran, 4710 AR: ...one of the village aldermen asked me to intercede in a rather nasty on-going dispute between two local hunters...I hope my ruling reflected well on the faith. It is only through Her guidance that I saw the truth path towards peace and understanding in the matter...

7 Kuthona, 4712 AR: The village elders have invited me to attend such gatherings of theirs as I wish....though I still find the people here on the whole small-minded and absorbed by often petty grievances, there is true goodness and light to be found here...I've found a welcome rarely colored by greed or deception...this is a harsh land, and the people here face many challenges, but always with an honesty and optimism that fills the heart with confidence. This is indeed a place where the Goddess walks with favor...

13 Neth, 4714 AR: I've taken on an apprentice. Though I long ago tutored young blades of The Dawnflower in the combat arms at the temple in Zimar, this is my first student in the healing arts. Her name is Sarae (how auspicious!!) and she is a half-elf. She came to the door one day and asked to learn my trade. And so now we learn together....

22 Arodus, 4715 AR: Elder Barlowe has introduced me to the widow Harmon. Of course I knew of her from the tavern, and knew of her loss...when Elim raised the matter, it was at first quite comical, with him being completely unaware of any restrictions or prohibitions my faith or sect places on such relationships...over a meal, I explained things...I even spoke of Clara. He is the first person I've told of her here in Phaendar...he is a good friend.

19 Sarenith, 4716 AR: I led a small congregation in readings from The Birth of Light and Truth at dawn this morning. We gather more often these days, and it brightens my heart to see the love of the Everlight spark within souls here in Phaendar...

1 Lamashan, 4716 AR: Elise Harmon and her son Barret visit often...I find myself in awe of her sense of mission in life, and her strength in such trying circumstances, widowed at 30...she intends to send Barret away to school when she has saved enough...I confess I've offered to contribute some modest sum towards the education of the boy. He really is quite a bright lad...

14 Rova, 4717 AR: Sarae led her first surgery this morning. Some damned fool from Druma fell off his wagon into a barrel of training weapons...the extraction of a blunted dagger from the man's torso was a delicate procedure...I am quite proud, and Sarae was beaming all day, of course...I expect we'll be treating more injuries in the days to come, as the village fills again with travelers, traders, and merchants for another Market Festival. I can only wonder what troubles will turn up on our doorstep tomorrow...
