Background:

Sajan was born in a well off family by Vudrani standards. His father, Viraj, was an ambitious merchant that married his Lebeda Brevoyni mother, Salvianella, for her father's investment in the naval trade; unfortunately for the Vudrani, the in-laws wanted nothing to do with Viraj and refused to pay any sort of dowry or make trading arrangements.

One can say that it was a loveless marriage between his parents, his father saw the marriage as a constant reminder to his failure in a business venture. Because of this, she decided to take her young boy back with her to her family. While it seemed like a great idea for both her and the boy, it didn't make it any easier for Sajan. Her family refused to recognize him as one of theirs and treated him like a houseguest who has overstayed their stay. Throughout his youth he would escape in books with his mother guiding him in subjects of nobility, history and a bit of the arcane.

Once he turned fourteen, his mother through whatever influence she had left in her family, was able to place him at the Acadamae Academy in Korvosa; as her older brother was one of the teachers there, and the academy always liked to have more income. This was of no benefit to the young wizard, as his uncle's hatred for his father was passed on to the son. His uncle having some power at the school (being Messida Vost's,dean of conjuration, personal assistant), placed him through a grueling first 3 years at the academy before Sajan could look at even on arcane book, or attend a class. He survived by being pure wit, intelligence, and luck his yearmates died from traps and experiments gone wrong. The Acadamae is know for it's ruthlessness and much of its income comes through would be applicants who don't even reach the learning stage.

Throughout his stay at the academy he turned quite a few and got notice, including headmaster Toff and dean of evocation Salgar, by performing exceptionally well academically and in the classroom.

His entire life changed a little over a few months ago at the academy, days after graduation, and sent him on his way to Brevoy again.
--------
On what seemed a regular night, Sajan attended to his extra carricular studies, getting ready for the next year's graduate class. Ending his readings early, he decided to go see his uncle. This was a monthly ritual where Sajan tried to extend the metaphorical fig leaf to his uncle for his mother's sake. Entering the staff quarters, preceded by his familiar, Sajan came upon a partially opened door to his uncle's study. Hearing whispered voices, he decided to wait by the door.

Are you sure it will work?

It has too! I am tired of Juaeli's wards hindering my summonings and her inability to see the grander picture.

Will the other ones be able to track it back to us?

Not if you do it right you moroon! If you place them at the correct place, her next casting should backlash on her. Hopefully killing her, if not at least talking her out of the equation for a few days, long enough for me to try my summoning.

You'll give me what you promised?

Yes, yes. Now get to it!

Sajan assumed one of the voices was his uncle, but not until the end of the conversation that he recognized that the other voice was the dean of conjuration, Vost.

Before getting caught, he darted further into the staff quarters. Seeing his uncle coming down the hall, he turned to his dean's door and knocked quickly. As usual Salgar was short tempered.

"What do you want Sajan? It's getting late."

"Sorry to bother you sir, I was reading up next year's readings and was wondering if you could give a quick explanation on admixture, and if the theory is true, one could change the very elmental nature of a spell?"

"Dammit Sajan, it is not a theory! We conceive of elements as opposites and separate from one another, but they are all part of one whole! You seemed to understand this earlier. Read the additional readings I gave in class. Your stupidity surprises me sometime!"

By the time the tirade was over, his uncle was out of sight.

"Thank you sir, I'll go and look at these readings right away."

Having a door slammed in his face calmed down the young man. That was something he was used to, not plots of potential murder. He had heard that dean of conjuration dealt in more nefarious summonings, but had dismissed them as mere products of the rumor mill.

Sajan quickly rushed to headmaster Toff's quarters and meticulously explained all that he had heard to the best of his memory.

The old headmaster, slowly got up, snapped a few joints in the process and walked to a bookshelf.

"I didn't think that she would chance this so soon, I was hoping that she would wait until after the next breaching."

He put the book into a backpack, stuffed a bag of coins, and walked to his desk.

"You have relatives in Brevoy don't you boy? I mean that uncle of yours...what's his name again...ah yes, Redalfo, quite a suck up that one."
"I do sir, as well as tmy mother, but lets just say that the relationship with my mother's family is strained at best"

"He needs the taste of a woman's embrace that one. I'm guessing that he's trying to embrace the wrong woman"

Looking to the heavens for some inspiration, or simply time to think, the old wizard jots down a few notes on a parchment, rolls it up and then seals it with wax and applies his arcane mark to it.

"No matter for your family, maybe this will give you a chance to patch things up, hopefully they are nothing like your uncle...ha ha ha"

The humor was lost on the inexperienced wizard in the excitement and panic.

"Now lad, with the money I gave you, my own apprentice spellbook, and this note head of to Brevoy tonight. I have friends with the swordlords, find one of them and give them this note. Tell them that you are the candidate that I recommend for the Stolen lands expedition."

Sajan was speechless at holding one of the headmaster's spellbook. Time had clearly left its mark on it, yet the pages inside were fresh as the day they were bound.

"Listen boy! It doesn't hold mighty secrets, or wait...does it?"

The old man scratched his head and did seemed confused for a fraction of a second.

" I can't remember now. Anyways, it doesn't matter, it shouldn't have anything more than you already know or beyond your capacity."

Getting up from his desk, the old man pushed Sajan towards the fireplace.

"Now my boy, it's time to make your place in the world!"

On the final word, the headmaster pushed the young man into the fire.

Expecting heat and burning, Sajan opened his eyes to a backpack falling on top of him followed by his familiar,Kutan, landing squarely on his head. Looking at his surroundings he realized that he was on the outskirts of Korvosa.

Gathering his gear he quickly made his way to the merchant district, and paid fare on the first caravan to Brevoy.

A few weeks passed by without any incidents, one night while setting out his bedroll, he could hear scribling coming from his backpack, from his spellbook more specifically.

Turning the pages he didn't see anything until looking at the inside of the back cover. Writing was appearing before his eyes!

"Sajan,
I wish that I had had more time to properly get you ready for the journey. I have had my eye on you for a while now but thought it improper as you are not even a graduate of the academy yet.
But as you will quickly learn, life does not go as planned and even grizzled old men like me can't foresee everything. The harlot forced my hand.

[b]I am taking care of matters here, but I cannot do it openly so it will take time. But you shouldn't worry yourself with these matters. I have another task besides the one that I gave you.

I don't know for how long the academy will survive, so I am taking steps to plant seeds in case things get out of my hands at the academy.

Your task, my dear boy, is to start another academy in the Stolen Lands. Calm down, calm down. I know it seems like a monumental task, but if you take it one small step at a time, I know you can achieve this my boy. It might seem like a life sentence, but having seen your performance, and the way you treated your classmates, I know that you are the right student for this.

I will try to give you advice and help as you require it, but I cannot promise, as I am quite forgetful in my old age, and running the academy takes more time than I actually have. Act as if you are on your own.
I have already spoken with the swordlords. You will be surrounded by capable companions who will be able to help you when your skills or knowldege fail you, as you will help them when theirs do as well.

Life in an adventure my boy, relish every moment, as time creeps up on us quicker than we think, and past mistakes haunt us for longer than we would like.

Toff".

Absorbing all this, Sajan was ready to face his first real adventure.

RECENT HISTORY

His first day back to Brevoy, was very different. On his journey back, he met a traveling gnome by the name of Fizzwiddle. They both got along quite well and parted ways at the entry to the city and promised to meet back up in the coming days.

Getting back home, brought back a flutter of memories both of loving compassion and passive aggressiveness. Out of respect, Sajan went to meet his grand father first. The old man seemed to have calmed down and wasn't as harsh as he seemed in the past. Maybe it was Sajan who had a different world view after surviving the academy? The old man said that he had to attend to business, so he quickly dismissed Sajan, but before he left his office the old man said:

"There is young man in the barracks by the name of Viklop, he is a competent swordsman. I want him to follow you, I already invested too much money in you and you dying on me would be a bad investment"

Within a few weeks, Viklop and Sajan were good friends and realized that they had similar goals for their houses and in life. 'Vik' also introduced Fionn into the fold, and the three quickly started planing their expedition. Having the go ahead of his previous head teacher and a few allies in tow, Sajan was ready to face the Stolen Lands.

Appearance:

Sajan took most fo the Vudani traits from his father. Angular features, dark hair that is graying prematurely. He is medium height, with little fat or muscle mass. He keeps his hair short, with a goatee. He dresses in traveler's clothes, but the years of living in a disciplined institution are reflected in his dress code; everything has a function, and the placement of a button or a satchel is at its optimal location. What set's Sajan apart physically are the pockmarked burn marks across his neck and face (and possibly the rest of his body), the result of his apprenticeship years at the academy.

LTG:

- Establish an academy in the stolen lands, that will have its door open to all races and walks of life. Diversity and exchange of ideas is a key ingredient to innovation.

- Establish his rightful place in the Brevoy nobility

- Clean out the corruption at his old academy, andhopefully have his academy acts as an annex to the original.
